As the strike team makes it in and begins throwing chaos and trying to incapacitate the camp, Paxton is already on his stomach all over again. He fires shots, one after the other. Hopper helps him reload as he stays trained on the camp as the Unown and DRK Triad assassins scramble to combat everything all at once. He shoots an Unown O through the eye, and cuts off the tail end of an Unown J. He manages to beat back an assassin, a shot catching their shoulder before its time to go. [break][break]

The flurry of Unown find him and begin their assault again even as he continues to fire. It's less accurate, but they're clustered together, surely something will hit. He reads the Navy's message loud and clear. "Brace yourself, Navidson" he said back. [break][break]

It's only warning as a final shot is fired before Hopper TELEPORTS him to the E4's side. Paxton lowered his rifle, clapping a hand on the man's shoulder before Hopper TELEPORTs again into the middle of the encampment. Paxton lets out Joules who pulls up a flurry of PROTECT screens as Hopper moves up and out to repel whatever attacks would try to come from above. The Unown fire off, hitting the screens and beginning to crack through some of them just as quickly as Joules had set up. [break][break]

"Told you they're fast." he said as on cue, a DRK Triad Agent moved in closer for the attack, the shields worthless when there was so much other space to maneuver in.

"Streenstrup, hold them back!" he added, ordering his shadow Octillery as she used SHADOW HOLD to attempt to drag the entranced trainers back.

"Just like any other crime in our courts. Why is terrorism any different?" he said, not bending on it. They could atone all they liked for all he cared. The question of the military came up and he frowned. His conversation with MATIAS SILPH still simmering in the subconscious. Mainly his guilt towards his old friend. "Not everyone can accept Amnesty, especially once completed, as proof. Trust takes time to build, and not everyone is a soldier that can just...take orders and without complaints." “As far as I'm concerned, if they complete the Commissioner's approved Amnesty program, and you signed off on them then I trust them to accomplish the duties of their job. If I believe in Dalia, then I believe in the program, and by extension, the defectors that made it. A lot of the program is trust in the program itself. I don't have to like you to do my job correctly. But maybe that’s just the difference between officers, rangers, and soldiers: the rigidity of authority we respect.”

They set him as leader and he takes point with a small nod after a split second of hesitation. It'd been a while since he'd taken the reigns of leadership, but now was not the time to worry about the rust on his limbs. They were trusting him to get them to Matias and out of this safely. The constant tremors vary from slight shaking to full on EARTHQUAKES. Right now it was fine, but the closer they moved to the top that more precarious that'd be. Either sort ledges or volatile PRECIPICE BLADES. "I'll take the point, Joules can cover from the explosions with PROTECT but it's not foolproof. If either of you have anything that can help keep up grounded from the EARTHQUAKES. The one who takes back can catch the two up front, or help destroy the blades before they get too close to us." The blade up the JAGGED PASS looks like glowing hot thorns. [break][break]

He knew enough to know what to expect, but this wasn't terrain he was an expert with. Joules seemed ready regardless despite the danger they were in. "I'll push out first, wait a few seconds before following me in case it's a particularly bad explosion." he said as he and his Magnezone departed. "Sky Team, Cassidy, Morales, and Logan are moving up the base." he said before his partner pushed up, setting off a powerful FLASH CANON that cuts through the PRECIPICE BLADES threatening to cover the current path up. It sets the blades off but they don't reform too quickly. He pushes forward eyes alert as Joules scans the vicinity before preparing to blast the path forward again. [break][break]

Movement pulled his attention and he turned, rifle up. He sees the back of the woman that had been conspiring with MATIAS SILPH this entire time. "You-!" he blurted, taking a quick shot as Elisabeth Fiorelli retreated. She doesn't trip or stop, the shot missing as she disappeared all too quickly. "Shit,"

"I do." Paxton confirmed without hesitating, glancing over at the Head Ranger. "Arrogance. Martyrdom. Heroes." he spat out the last word. "That kind of shit gets you and your friends killed." he said, eyes a cold steel. He wasn't overthinking this. He was speaking from lived experience. Something that still pushed him forward so ardently, even if he hated remembering it. [break][break]

There's a small silence that lay between them, and Paxton kept busy looking around the strange flora and fauna of the Giant Chasm. A lot of it was familiar but certain markings and tracks resemble something more alien. The question is a mild surprise, but to his credit he doesn't blurt out the obvious answer. [break][break]

Much like freya morningstar had once with Project Sapphire, and PENELOPE LIVY before her, he stayed quiet and gave it thought. Gears moved slowly in his as he thought this over. He sighed through his nose, crossing his arms as he considered their options. "It may be impossible to implement, but I'd hope to formally ban defectors from holding office in the council." he said, eyebrows furrowed as he gamed it out in his head, working how to explain it like he was drafting the proposal for the council already. "Regardless of how well the public takes it, Amnesty doesn't fully erase the crimes they’ve committed associated with a terrorist organization. They may avoid trial and sentencing, but they still committed those crimes." he works it out in his mind. “Gym Leader would still work, it's farther away from the heart of the League, and if working with the people is their goal, what better than our front line?” Gym leaders had their own set of niches and hardships. But with the amount of work they did on their own, one had to be committed. Interfacing directly with the public was exhausting. [break][break]

“AQUA is a necessity, and it's contractual. The council works independently of it as much as it does with it.” he added, pulling apart the layers of the League as he conceptualized speaking out loud something he felt should be obvious. “Rocket is in a new era of choice. Their recruits come willingly. And crimes that heinous should disqualify you from being so close to that kind of power.” there’s another pause as he continues to run through it in his head. [break][break]

“Truth is, I’ve seen some of the reports for Amnesty, and it's only getting better every quarter.” he said, painfully pulling the praise for Ollie’s ears only. “Sustain your program with ranger and officer partners, mental health check ins, and witness protection.” he pursed his lips, nearly glaring at the Head Ranger. There's another begrudging sigh as he added, “Perhaps offering incentives for companies to hire defectors once they finish their amnesty program. Identifying a job you can slot them into for immediate salary may also further soothe the anxiety of defection with no backup.”

He'd taken the rest of his week off, tired and in desperate need of crawling into the forest. It was the best way he had of decompressing. And with Project Sapphire eating up half his time, and assisting PENELOPE LIVY on her own matters taking up the other half, he barely had time to think about subjects that weren't work. So he's taken Thursday and Friday and headed out somewhere remote. Nature was always a little more comforting than the city. At least, it was quieter. He enjoyed it with no company, able to clear his mind and empty his worries out of his skull.

After a few days of quiet, he'd almost forgotten what other people sounded like. Until something crashes through the underbrush, covered in all sorts of grime from the forest floor. HHad it yelled something beforehand? He stayed put, back resting against a stump, with the fire crackling before him. His Octillery however, is on alert, gurgling menacingly as she holds at the ready a HYDRO PUMP. [break][break]

He mulled her answer over his topped off glass. Seeing it like that, he stands up reaching over to gently clink their glasses together before sitting back down and letting out another long sigh. "Not Alexei Ivanov specifically. All of them. Every 3 or 6 months we run something to activate their security protocols and see if we can get past it. We already do that for our own systems, might as well sick agents out on gym leaders." At least it might guarantee that security protocols were changing constantly. [break][break]

He watched Freya lean in angrily and set his glass down, lowering his voice. "For now, only Melody Miro. I'm trying to find out who else Hideo entrusted. Somehow I doubt it was only one person. No one in this building can keep their mouths shut." he said with a shrug. It'd probably go nowhere, He wasn't naïve enough to not think Paxton was asking for who else had hidden information from the League. Especially after Freya's reaction to Alexei. [break][break]

"These meetings show where the disconnect between different levels of command are. The only merit to these large meetings." He'd been to enough Ranger Rising's to testify. "Information needs to be disseminated to a large number of people quickly, and sometimes town hall's are the most effective way. However," he took another sip before eyeing the councilwoman. [break][break]

"I don't think it was wise to 'warn' them of the impending attack on Sootopolis. Much less when AQUA's own plan isn't finalized." It was close, but there wasn't any merit in telling them until it actually happened. "Much less when this isn't an issue the Gym Leaders can weigh in on. And this meeting seemed to be a meeting meant to encourage just that for them." He knew some were softer on Rocket. "But then again," he sighed, frustration evident. "That's not how I'm used to operating."

"From what I can tell, he's an idealist without a filter. I wouldn't trust him in battle, not because he's ex Rocket, but because he'd never listen to reason and martyr himself." And because he was an ex- Rocket. But when the living embodiment of purification vouched for him, it was hard to hold that to his name. Even so, he remembered the holiday party and grimaced. [break][break]

Paxton huffed as they moved onto Remiel Calcifet . "He left everything behind to join AQUA, but I think...this could be spun against him very easily..." he trailed off as he looked over at Ollie. "Yeah. Kanto." he thought deflated him. Could he even call it home anymore? Razed to the ground, stained with blood, and abandoned? [break][break]

"We just want to consider options before we...settle." Every option would have its cons. They were all defectors. Intrinsically, him and PENELOPE LIVY would never be fully content with them. Choosing death and then skipping out on the consequences of that choice? Kanto had not been enough to dissuade new recruits. He didn't feel sympathy for any of them. [break][break]

But if there was a single thing he respected in this world, it was doggedly chasing after a goal. Working tirelessly. Work ethics, strong ones at that. "Any defector that comes out of Amnesty standing upright may have...one quality I can appreciate." he said, struggling to find the words to offer praise to the program Ollie was so proud of. "It's a difference in opinion on conviction, Ollie. If I had my way, they'd all be dead before they crossed the border from Rocket." he said as he scratched at his neck, itching a scar that was no longer there. Not since his death in Meteno. [break][break]

"But the one you pull out of Amnesty at least, those I'm not afraid of fighting alongside. That's the bet courtesy I can offer." And it had taken a lot of time to adjust to that feeling. But this is a compromise. And he had to consider the good of Hoenn in the long run. As much as he hated it. "I guess." Maybe he was selfish. Or had been selfish. After losing almost everyone those ideals instilled in him of loyalty and self sacrifice had burned down like his own command. He'd worked in Hoenn in order to fulfill a selfish desire. Now, he doggedly worked towards something he couldn't quite voice. [break][break]

In contrast to Matias, he wasn't quite sure of what he wanted for himself. Just that if he had blood on his hands, might as well do it for someone else. [break][break]

Paxton gave the Greninja and E4 a thumbs up before settling into position. He takes to his scope, eyes closed before carefully opening one and pulling his rifle tight. In and out, breathe slowly despite the spike in adrenaline right before the shot. The teleportations are low, until he lines up his sight picture with someone's chest. Nothing fancy, hit the target. He stretched out his finger before the shot fired through, the crack of his muzzle firing slightly muffled. [break][break]

The hot land, and a body drops to the floor. "One down!" he relayed, as his Porygon vibrated nervously waiting for its signal. The camp is immediately buzzing with DRK Triad agents moving around. Some appear dozens of feet in the air checking, taunting the sniper as their own Unown pin and writhe ready to dispatch him. They're just in line for Jirachi's baleful attack and he closes his eyes, taking his chances at his best as the attack crashes into the encampment. [break][break]

But what' left is Unown, more than agents frantic and busy. Eyes upon eyes in the darkness glowing with power as they try to locate them. He takes another shot as an Unown seemingly makes direct eye contact with him. It's torn apart but its brethren all lock on to his position multiple brilliant beams into rock and stone. Hopper TELEPORTs them to an alternate location, a nearby hill, closer than before. "Your turn!" he called back as he set up once more, rougher and faster. The attack now was to overwhelm before they could figure out where the shots and attacks were coming from. At least this part is easy. They only used Unown, avoiding Hattori or the rest of Navy's pokemon would be simple.

"Because people have been kidnapped, you kept this a secret? Why would telling the League automatically mean you would be at risk of kidnapping?" he asked, pressing hard on the conversation. "You speak like Alexei Ivanov , as if you're certain there's spies in our ranks or leaks we haven't stopped. And if there is, I need you to tell me about it." It's vital I help PENELOPE LIVY and Gunner Graves figure out how to better secure the League's intel so this kind of thing doesn't happen again."
