Volta, despite valiant efforts, isn't able to continue on. When the Gouging Fire isn't down by the ZAP CANON they begin the retreat only to cry out when the fire type mauls them in their OUTRAGE. The pain is intense, and after everything it's already been through, it faints and collapses. Paxton's hands are at his pokeball immediately, see the head above the trees fall. A beam of red light returns the paradox and he stashes his partner away for later. [break][break]

Hopper beeps, analysis on the Talonflame being conducted mere seconds after their trainer downs it. They approach the bird but see no signs of life, and beep a confirmed kill, eyes roving to the distance where Volta had fallen and expecting the appearance of the feral Gouging Fire next. Even so, Hopper floats back to orbit near Paxton as it keeps watch from their six. [break][break]

Paxton is barely able to get his partner back to him before the pokeballs smacks him upside the head. It doesn't take him out, but it is pretty annoying. "HEY!" he snapped before the pokeball released a shining red Genesect. This one most likely wasn't defective like the ones they'd collected during Sootopolis' aftermath. [break][break]

The Porygon is slammed backwards by the Genesect, beeping incredulously before attempting to shove it against a tree wit ha violent PSYCHIC attack. Paxton grunts at Dorian comes out of the shadows finally, eyes the large club. "FUCK!" He catches it, sorta, on his forearm, screaming as flesh bruises and bone possible cracks. He's not sure yet, everything is a blur right now. "That's my line you Rocket Bastard!" he snarled, lifting a leg to slam back his attacked and get the goddman club off of him. [break][break]

Joules knows they can play this off as following orders. Freya was an unknown threat, and Freya also had asked for this. Paxton can only duck form the sparks of electricity that don't come as everything focused on the pin point precision the Magnezone had on the councilwoman.

Eva yells but he can't stop the energy his partner has flung out. Equipment shakes against the force of their attack. Even with LOCK ON's redirection, Paxton ducks for cover form the intensity of the light. When it's all over, he hears the whirring of Joules' magnets as they close in to check on him. His eyes move to Freya who was flung back from the blow, but still moving, slightly. "We'll talk about this later." he said hurriedly, before putting away the dual type in its pokeball and moving with Eva to help Freya up. He slows down, allowing the other woman with far more medical expertise to get a chance to pick her up first.

Meteno had been a while back. He quirked an eyebrow at the pup, letting Genny speak on it. Paxton lets her set the pace and the mood. After all, that's what he'd come here for to begin with. The dog seemed happy, for what it's worth. He'd never seen a sad Yamper though. Until just now, but he got better at least. Paxton nodded along. "That's good. He looks like he has enough energy for the both of you." he noted.

He watches idly, carefully picking up his bag on the ground and rearranging his supplies by putting it back in the bag. No need to risk Lucky nipping at it, though he seemed well behaved enough. "Keep him out of trouble." The warning is indirect, instinctual really. "And think about SAPPHIRE. I need you to come in anyway for an evaluation with Tapu Bulu. It might be something to look at while- if you're in analysis." They couldn't force her to come in, after all. He prepared to take his leave, sketch finished and pad safely tucked away.

For what it's worth, the priest doesn't seem too put out with the costume reveal. He's glad it's not entirely disappointing. He did really like playing along with masquerades. A bit of a flair for the theatrics seemed to have rubbed off on him even all these years later. His handshake is firm, happy there's no hard feelings. The deem tones of a string quarter was still audible, and there wasn't really a force shoving them out just yet. [break][break]

He returned the bow, eyes raising from the ground to meet Isaac Ward 's before offering his hand. "What kind of man would I be if I didn't?" He hadn't practiced his steps just to go away without putting his dancing shoes to good use. [break][break]

"Truthfully, this is the part I was looking forward to the most." Dancing always soothed his mind, and it always led to very interesting conversation, no matter the partner. Which only led to an even better dancing experience. As they make their way back onto the dance floor he snickers at the awkwardness of his feet. The edges of whatever spell he'd been under stiffening his legs. "The first steps may be a little shaky, but it'll pass." he added as they began to glide and twirl, honoring the ghostly efforts with one final dance.

His companions fuss over him, but in the haze of panic and adrenaline it feels fuzzy, almost annoying. But he doesn't snap at them, merely hide away his bared teeth and set the stolen knife on another table when Father Ward tries to soothe him. It difficult with the ghost shenanigans pushing him further and further into innate aggression. But he holds enough of his facilities to understand his new companions mean him no harm and sort of listens. [break][break]

The ghosts irritate him however. Their illusions and taunting annoy him, and instead of exploring the mansion he's stuck inside with no obvious escape. "I-...'M Fine-" he managed, voice hesitant as it came out with difficult when he looked at the priest. They are intent on helping him, as if he's the problem. [break][break]

And then, as quickly as the evening had soured, it all stopped. The doors slammed open and the beginning rays of a new dawn filtered in. And paxton concordas straightened up, blinking as gently touching his throat. His head cleared and his expression relaxed. "I-" he coughed lightly, swallowing as and looking around as Ivy disappeared. He'd seen her with a child (Eris Halla ) and now nothing. Was she back inside? Another blink before he turned to his companion once more. [break][break]

"Sorry for the scare." His frivolous accent disappears, and he carefully takes off the half mask he'd been wearing to rub the lines it left away. "I'm feeling better, probably the fresh air." he said before smiling as he offered his hand for a shake once more. "Also, I should reintroduce myself. I got a little carried away earlier." he added, quirking the same smile as before. [break][break]

"She did for the end of Sootopolis." he explained. "Did you catch her transformation?" he asked, half curious, half distracting Matias from the blood sampling. He tries to be quick, capping off vials and cleaning off the site on his arms.

"I'm going to keep these samples as another control." he began to explain. "Rayquaza and Kyogre went through similar processes, I think." He hadn't been terribly close to the whale, but it looked like something had happened once the whale burst through Sootopolis. "I think it's not far fetched to think Groudon might show the same influx of primal energy as the other two." he said

"Have you...and Groudon's relationship changed at all since Sootopolis? For better or worse?" he asked, gesturing he was ok to move his arm and relax.

He nodded as Freya answered, looking back at the team behind the plexiglass who were nodding vigorously as they moved around and wrote notes on what they were seeing. The effects was nerve wracking. Not just Rayquaza's giant head and body curled aorund its vassal, but Freya herself too. It's not just the change in appearance. He felt a distinct pressure from the energy radiating off of them.

And then the burst of flames makes him flinch back and Joules beep in alarm. Btu the fire is reserved for God's chosen. He looks over the singed blood, pooling preciously at her feet now a partially burnt mark. The scales glisten under dying embers. It's much more horrifying up close, the half beast half human thing Rayquaza has made.

It's a perversion of pokemon and human. But it also reminds me of old, strange tales. Of a mythical time where people believed the line between human and pokemon was so much closer than it was now. And distinctions got blurry. If he were an ancient people, and saw Freya like this? He'd believe it too. "How's your eyes? Still seeing straight? Or any dizziness-" he stopped blinking in surprise before looking at Eva for confirmation she'd heard her too.

Her request makes the hair on his neck stand for some reason but he stays still. His Magnezone however, steel or not, is stil la living being,. And it can sense the danger radiating from this room alone. "There's- ther'es no wya I would try tha-" but Joules would. Becuase joules is trained to obey orders, and when there are none it supplements its own: PROTECT.

The Magnezone juts forward, magnets whirring faster than normal. The sound alerting Paxton who turned as the Magnezone LOCKED ON to Freya, guaranteeing Eva and Paxton would be spared before summoning a sudden, blinding blast of a ZAP CANON at the Avatar. Energy explodes as Paxton is mid run, trying to choke out his partner's name to stop them.

As Paxton makes a break for it, he focuses on speed rather than stealth. After all, the rain would help cover his tracks and muffle his steps. As he retreated the Klefki glowed a pale pink before strange sigils glowed around the Lugia as it dropped one last FAIRY LOCK , to keep the legend from pursuing them before jingling away into the dark forest. [break][break]

Paxton doesn't dare try his luck on another shot. Not when the route is buffeted by another storm full of shadows. He doesn't push the attack. Like he'd told Genevieve Cromwell before, there's no point in dying a martyr. In this situation, there's no point in dying by fighting terrible odds. He wouldn't try powering through by sheer force of will. He wouldn't lay down his life on terrible odds and incredibly low rewards. [break][break]

Paxton moves, partly hurt but still in one piece. His pokemon banged up but alive. Lugia seen, and stalled for a least a few minutes. That's enough to get everyone in their path of clear out. Baldwin finds him as he ducks behind another cluster of trees and sinks to the ground, hands behind his head as the storm racks through the trees and even seems to uproot a couple of the older ones. "You ok?" he murmured, as the initial wave stopped before he continued running, eyes on his six as he checked for Cillian Quinn 's pursuit. The dual type only shook its body in response before being returned. [break][break]

He takes one last look at the Lugia , spotting it through the shaking trees and considers one more bullet, one more shot. But he would rather pull back now than try to reengage and get zapped again.

He arrives fashionably late, arm out for one of the event's very generous supporters: luciano fisk . He hadn't meant to attend, only help set up, but when Luci had brought it up it sort of...tied his hands. And he figured, this could make up for their last party together. No mistletoe, no mishaps. Just, making small talk with people while Luci charmed whoever he spoke to. [break][break]

His suit is simple, with small details complimentary to his date's. He's not often a fashionable man, allowing Luci the reigns if he wanted to dictate his appearance. His hair is slicked back on the sides and pinned in place with nigh invisible bobby pings. The bangs allowed are perfectly coiffed ( not by his hands ). His suit is tailored well, and new, and far more expensive than anything Paxton could ever afford on his salary. But it made Luci happy and so he went along with it. [break][break]

They enter the grand estate, the well worn rock walls and dragon detailing setting the stage for Freya's event. It helped understand why Freya was the way she was. And it was well worn, even after her banishment from Sootopolis she'd slipped right back in as if time hadn't stopped. Good for her. He approached the hostess with Luci in tow and greeted her. "It's like you never left." he said with a placid smile as he reached out and clasped the woman's forearm in a familiar handshake."Not everyone's this lucky." he added, though his words don't carry an ounce of spite despite being one of those unlucky many. "Looking forward to see the good this can do for Sootopolis." he said, before casting a discerning eye to the crowd as well. As he did he smiled spotting a few familiar faces before carrying on. "I trust you have everything under control." He moves right along to introductions. "This is luciano fisk , one of your sponsors I believe. I trust you've met him and his family." he said shifting focus to his date, the real star of the show.

He expects to be dismissed. That this is the end of everything. All because of a temper tantrum with a man who shouldn't have been involved or acknowledged in the first place. But he had nobody to blame but himself. And once again, he was at risk of losing Luci forever. Just like during Christmas when he'd tried to explain the hallucination during the chase for the hero dogs. Or before when he'd innocuously revealed his new name.

But Luci didn't care about those things or those excuses. He took it as a sign of him lacking in his devotion. And Paxton had never intended to make him feel that way. He barely heard Luci but he's quiet, not trying to make any noise or movement that may piss off the artist even further. So as he moved to grab his things and make himself scarce he almost missed Luci's words. "I don't." he stated, unsure how to proceed. He turned to look into the kitchen, carefully moving closer to watch Luci sip out of his glass.

Not many lights are on but he can still see the steely glint in his eyes. He tries not to cower, but if he was afraid of anybody in this world it wasn't his family's killer or the DRK Triad. It was luciano fisk . "I was going to my own apartment. I didn't think you'd want me skulking around in yours." he said, keep his tone low. After a beat longer of watching him drink.

"You're upset." An observation.

"I don't want to bother you." A suggestion.

"I- That's-" St. Claire squinted at the priest not quite right. His brain felt fuzzy, and something was sitting on the tip of his tongue. "I- Something doesn't feel right." he admitted, frowning as he looked back at Ivy. "I thought- I think- there was something in my drink. Or food." Maybe even the air being pumped into the mansion was drugged. Who could say really? [break][break]

The woman, Ivy, calls him Preston and he blinked. That certainly felt familiar. Again he shook his head. Before he could explain further however, the screaming and the crumbling is made visible. A ring around the statues and angry ghost pokemon reveals the strange statues and the GYPSUM mess at the feet between them. Shit. The situation was getting alarming as the guests began to panic and he swallowed.[break][break]

"Let's pull back, and-...try getting away from the banquet hall." He murmured beginning to feel the effort sink in as he carefully herding the pair back. He doesn't mean to be rough but he does shoulder patrons out of the way, bumping into a woman with growing concern (Yuina Higashi ) and snapping like a dog protecting its meal. Trivialities like a made up name are forgotten, but instinct carved into muscle and bone isn't easily forgotten. Without really thinking, he slides a hand down his thigh and when he doesn't find what he's looking form, he turned to the dining table and tries to steal a knife. "Keep. Keep at the edge." he ordered the beginnings of a growl at the back of his throat as he looked over his new charges before back at some of the more frenzied patrons in the crowd. He makes eye contact for too long with someone and stands up straighter, baring his teeth has if about to snap.

Ragon gurgles, stuck in the WHIRLPOOL and trying desperately to breakout, but no matter where he nudged or floated, the water cluing to him. He can't quite gather enough speed to shake it off. Even so, he tries for one more HEX against the burnt Lugia before the ICY WIND hits. Paxton only catches the tail end of this, watching as Ragon screeched, the WHIRLPOOL freezing and encasing him as he dropped out of the sky. Paxton is quick, snapping off Ragon's pokeball and returning him with a quick flick of his wrist. The pokeball shoots out its beam and the dual type is returned before the mass of water crashes into the ground. [break][break]

Soaked to the bone, and now cold from the ice attack, Paxton swaps tactics. He can't see Cillian Quinn anymore, and with the Lugia bearing down on him this close up and personals, he doesn't have enough time to strategize or reposition. So he does the next best thing. "You're up." he said, dropping the premier ball at his feet, almost as if bouncing the pokeball on the ground. Balwin the Klefki pops out and he puts the pokeball away again. "Get me some space." he stated. [break][break]

The dual type floats out of the leaves towards the Lugia before jangling loudly for her attention and sending a swift DRAINING KISS to grab the legendary's attention. As Baldwin worked his distraction, Paxton makes a break through the trees intent on putting distance between him and the avatar. Things weren't looking good, and he currently didn't have anything ready to take on Lugia's battlefield encompassing moves. Everything he had was more dialed in, specific. They'd route him out of the trees eventually, best not stick around until they finally do.

The Gyarados also begins to glow and grow with a roar of power that echoes across the tops of the trees. It's scream hits Paxton as he's trying to stand back up. Pulling himself upright and leaning on a tree in aching pain, he turned to see the giant red beast, water rippling around it. And his partner? [break][break]

Coniebear is grinning so wide her cheeks might split. All 3 heads bare their teeth and sharp fangs, the giant heads on her back drool and snap in excitement of the hunt. The Mega Gyarados makes a move for her and she meets it head on with arms open wide and hidden strength. The horrible sound of gurgling is loud enough for Paxton to consider returning the Mega Mawile, but then she squeezes hard, pinching at scales and muscle in her smaller arms as she initiated a PLAY ROUGH. [break][break]

Sometimes Connie was horrifying with how eager she was to handle her opponents. But that's why he loved her. She understood the risks. She didn't back down even with all the risks involved. Much like Paxton, they were both chomping at the bit to get on the ground and hunt down Rocket's. Now that they were mid fight, he didn't have the heart to take her out of it. She hated that more than a loss. [break][break]

Earth kicks up as Coniebear is pushed back and she shook trying to stop and dissipate all of the Gyarados' momentum while her mouths flailed trying to find air. Shaking and digging scars into the peaty ground, she tried to slam the mega evolved beast back into the ground where it belonged. [break][break]

Volta is panting, but he does not let up. Even as the Gouging Fire glows with healing power, the Raging Bolt only took a couple of steps backwards, planted his stance, and unleashed a ZAP CANNON to push back the fire beast. He aims to push for time and become the wall that the sniper desperately needed to reposition himself. Hopper for their part, nearly TELEPORTs away once Paxton makes a break for it. But with the Talonflame insistent, the little blue pokemon turns. Upon seeing the flaming assault it quickly summons another TRI ATTACK, hoping to keep the powerful fire type away but they struggle to charge up the blast in time. They're a little slow, and force of the bird flying into them pushes them back, but they glow with a strange reflective energy to protect themselves form the fire. [break][break]

"Enough!" As he watched the Talonflame surge towards his partner, Paxton loaded a round with a shaky hand and took aim. This closed and at this distance, it wouldn't be very good. But at this point, anything to get the pesky dual type away from him and his pokemon. [break][break]

People don't usually make it this close to Paxton when he sniped. That's what Hopper was there for. They made his quick getaway and they prepped other possible nests. But Hopper is occupied and so Paxton would have to handle the encroaching Mad Dog himself. He lefts off a shot, white hot casing flung out before snapping the weapon over his shoulder. "We're moving to position Bravo." he instructed the Porygon as he began to move backwards, a hand already reaching for a knife at his side. He hadn't had much time to survey the area aorund himself so better they turn tail now than wait for further attack. He turns to move, as quickly and quietly as possible. [break][break]

The invitation to AQUA is not a surprise, not anymore. As the proceedings of the assembly continued dutifully, Paxton attended to the department's needs, covering down for PENELOPE LIVY and reassigning meetings to those who could cover for him, covering for Penny. The slew of work meetings she'd sent his way hadn't slowed down and he was becoming even more curt in how he spoke and handled the proceedings. If only out of need to have time in his day to breathe. [break][break]

But as AQUA V played out, he finished up things in his office and watched the meeting end on Penelope's calendar. His answer was already set. After all, he'd do just about anything for his Commissioner. And if in her wisdom she believed he would be a benefit at the table, he would prepare for whatever it would throw at him. [break][break]

Of course, he'd said yes, head slightly bowed at the honor of it all. He'd kept it quiet of course, waiting for the proceedings to finalize. The contract had arrived in the mail, earlier that day signed and sealed. He opened it in silence, read over the terms an conditions dutifully, and added his own signature to send back. He takes a moment to think it over. Not his decision, but how differently he pictured where he'd stand when he first came to Hoenn. After all, he'd arrived intent on abandoning being a captain and worrying about others. Now...he was back in the same spot. Probably worse now, being so close to his own Councilwoman. She appreciated his opinion, trusted his judgement. It's different, but the same in certain ways. [break][break]

To think he'd done all this just to find family that had probably long been dead. Now CALLISTA MOON is back in his life and he felt soothed. At odds as they were, it's a relief to see Eva Morales every so often too. MATIAS SILPH was coming around as well, despite the awkwardness of discussing their past. [break][break]

He thinks of luciano fisk . Nearly picks up the phone and calls him but hesitates. This might only make him angry to know about. He could hear his lover's sharp words right now. [break][break]

Really? Another promotion? Are you so tired of seeing me that you run back to the office every chance you get? Or...is there something else...there?

The thought weighs on him and like the coward he was he procrastinates delivering the news. A risky move. Luciano would be even angrier if he found out form another person. But, for now, he puts it off. He'd fight that battle another day, whatever Luci may think of him. For now, he brushes off the thought and stands up to peek outside his door. His favorite HBIC officer is still on duty, typing away at something or other memo Penny had given her. "Daphnée Marseille ," he said, a Cheshire like grin spreading and a tell tale glint in his eye. "Are you busy?" he held up an empty mug, the electric kettle already on. The woman took pause before quickly shutting her laptop and setting out an away plaque. In seconds, she's rushing past him with an armful of snacks, and he closed the door behind him, locking it while he was at it to tell her the news.
