Luci holds his gaze like the truth of the matter was so obvious. Like this was just another universal constant that had always meant to be. Like he was sure he'd see him again and they'd come back together and fit so perfectly and- [break][break]

'paxton, please.'

His breath hitches in his throat as they speak. It silences him, grounds him in the moment. [break][break]

And even in his wildest dreams he never thought he'd be able to do this again. And it's different, somehow, but still familiar. He's kissed him before, overflowing with the energy of a young pup in love. Excited, secretive, giggly. This is different. [break][break]

He's happy of course. But it feels heavier, more weighty. [break][break]

And as he tilts his head back to meet Luciano, his entire mind goes blank. He steps for just an inch, eyes closing as they share something warm, and beautiful. Just barely coming back from the brink of nothingness. [break][break]

So close to shattering completely and forever. [break][break]

Paxton won't let it. He goes further, pushes deeper than he ever had back when he was younger. He'd left- no, given up because of the war. Never again. [break][break]

He doesn't expect what he sees next. Luci's anger, his sneer fading just as quickly as it'd come. Luci reaches out to him and he nearly forgets to breathe. Like a deerling in headlights, he freezes solid in his delicate grasp. [break][break]

He doesn't understand what's happening. Not shortly before, they'd been arguing. Luci had been pissed at him. Paxton had been ready to go home. For one panic filled second he thinks Luci is tugging him around one last time before getting ready to crush him. But if that was the case, then maybe luciano fisk was an incredibly actor. [break][break]

His voice is soft and Paxton soon enough is falling into the deep, deep depths of Luci's eyes. He's drowning, and the feelings he had tried to calm and suppress bloom forth with every word Luci speaks. Paxton's face grows red as he drowns in Luci's. His throat goes dry, and his heartbeat drums in his head. Luci says his name- his real name and he trembles in anticipation. [break][break]

He can't doubt him. He can't see anything but what Luci professed. "I-" he wheezed. [break][break]

"I thought-" His voice is barely there as he tries to respond, taken aback. [break][break]

"I didn't know...I- I didn't imagine-" be stuttered, words quiet overwhelmed by how close Luci was. He hugs the bouquet to his chest,. The rest of the world falls away, His entire world, right now, is literally Luciano. He can't look away, can't think, can't even speak. [break][break]

"I didn't see it before, but...I believe you Luci." He wants to. He wants so badly to believe him. To indulge in this old emotion. To lay at peace in the middle of this sweetness that spread throughout all his thoughts of Luci. He didn't want to hurt him, nor hate him. He didn't want to forget him. He wants to stretch out this very moment into infinity. [break][break]

Somehow, he manages a small smile, gone off the deep end that were Luci's pretty blues. "I've always felt like this." [break][break]

Paxton steels himself, jaw clenched tight as Luci rears himself up to make Paxton feel so, so small. luciano fisk reveals the reality Paxton had been living in, pulls the wool back from his eyes, pops the bubble he'd been drifting in. That look- that person is a stranger to him. [break][break]

"You seemed comfortable ignoring it. And I didn't want to talk about it either." Paxton confessed. [break][break]

He didn't want Luci to think any differently of him. Unchanged, unmarred by time. Though, perhaps that seemed moot considering the body he sported lacked the scars he'd met Luci in. But he still felt different. He couldn't go back to Concord. There's a reason he'd made a clean break with his family name. [break][break]

They were dead, and so was Concord. [break][break]

"I think the world of you." His fists tighten. He'd never told him that out loud. But if he was going to be ridiculed, to be mocked. What did it matter. It'd hurt more. It'd be rawer, sure. But the words just came out. [break][break]

"I didn't lie. I was Concord. And I was fine being Concord again for a little while longer." He opens his mouth to say more but slowly his lips close and he sighs through his nose. He needed to stop talking.

The laughter cuts through their conversation and it hurts. It's everything vile and awful and horrible he'd imagined it to be. But there's a part of him too that is shocked Luci would act like this to him. Part of him that thought that he- they were special. [break][break]

And as it goes on, Paxton tries to wrench control from Concord because this could not be the thing that broke him. He couldn't allow it to be. It hurt and maybe regrets come back to the surface, but he cannot wallow in it. Not here. Not in front of Luci. [break][break]

"For as LONG as you needed me to, Luciano!" he finally snaps, grief warping into something prickly and defensive. He closes his eyes, trying to self soothe and breathe. There is no winning here. "I may not have said anything, but I also was not willfully ignorant of it either." he said. "Or did you think Concordas was a nickname?" [break][break]

He braces himself for the storm he was enticing. But it's all broken. [break][break]

"Paxton." he corrected firmly, standing a little straighter in the face of Luci's fury. "My name is paxton concordas ." [break][break]

"Everyone who knew me as Concord is dead. Except you." he doesn't explain anything further than that. It's not a point of pity, simply context. "I'm sorry that I've hurt you so much, Luci. I acted in a way that I thought was most considerate of your feelings and your comfort. I shouldn't have assumed." The wide eyed shock is gone, replaced by sullen acceptance. He does not avoid the artist's gaze, holding it instead of shrinking away. [break][break]

And despite it all, the arguing the snapping- he holds that same bouquet defensively. A last vestige of whatever the hell this night was.

His schedule stayed busy. Thank the gods. He didn't want to overwork himself, but sometimes if he idled too much he began to overthink things. Asinine things. things that didn't matter and never would. A routine keeps his mind on the right path. And a busy schedule keeps him without time to indulge in darker thoughts. [break][break]

When the call comes up of some uncovered shift he offers to take one. Maybe it'd be the last of them soon enough. He's been hearing that, there's been an uptick in recruitment. Numbers are stabilizing across the region and rangers can easily cover each other if need be. The organization was healthy anyway. That was the impression he got from ollie morales. And being one of the Head Rangers, he was sure to be intimately aware of the resources the Ranger Corps had or lacked. [break][break]

It'd be a shame though, to lose this. It's a good excuse to get out of the office but nowadays? He was too busy to take off while juggling everything PENELOPE LIVY had put on his plate. [break][break]

The mission is pretty simple. Supervise a rookie, and retrieve a litter of Litleo's that'd been reported found. He wondered if a storm or something had displaced the fire types. Either way, the situation seemed odd. No Pyroar had come to collect them yet? [break][break]

He moved to the assigned location quickly enough, having taken a change of clothing first. Something more fitting than office slacks and wingtip oxfords. [break][break]

"Apologies for the delay." he said, stepping through underbrush quietly as he made contact with his mission partner. He's busy adjusting the wrist of his gloves when the other trainer turns around and gives him pause. It's been a couple of years, but this person had been one of the few that he'd carried for a while. And then just as suddenly as everyone else they'd lost, Seiya had disappeared too. [break][break]

"Arai-" he began, incredulously as teal eyes widen in shock. They seem unfazed, and Paxton falls into step just a moment after. "Not a Captain. I'm retired." he corrected with a small, slow nod. "You...as well. I-" His gaze lingered, darting over Seiya's form. He looks for marks, scars, limbs, limps. Any sign that things have changed- and they have changed. It's been years. [break][break]

And unlike Seiya, Paxton had lost all of it. All his scars, his limps, his twinges from battle. All reset when Palkia had murderer him at the steps of Mt. Pyre. It makes him feel a but distance as he turned back to the situation at hand. [break][break]

"We can lead the Trevenant away, I think. Joules would bring too much attention to the litter and they might get hurt before they can reach to cover." he began, mind switching gears itself for work. "There must be a reason its lurking around the litter."

Luciano is upon him, cornering him as he struggled to understand just how and when it had all gone so wrong. For the first time in his life, he wants to disappear under that glare. He doesn't rise to the challenge, left weakened by the shock of it all. He'd never see Luci this angry. Much less with him. It hurt in a way that left him gasping for air, forgetting to breath as the sight of it all imprinted itself into every nightmare he would dream for the rest of his life. [break][break]

Because he didn't rise to Luci's expectations. And he had known that one day, he wouldn't. [break][break]

But he speaks all the same. [break][break]

"I still care about you." he said, firm in his resolve to not dare breathe any word of love. Maybe he would regret never telling him, but he wouldn't know what to do if Luci broke his heart a second time. He's already struggling with the first. [break][break]

"I- I didn't lie! Luci please. I just- I don't go by that name anymore. I haven't since I left university." he said. "It's not some huge secret I intended to keep." he continued, quick in his defense. "It's on my documents, my ID , even my office- I thought you simply preferred Concord-" he feels himself deflate a little having spoken too much truth. [break][break]

Then again maybe he was a liar. Omission was still lying. [break][break]

"I'm sorr- I- I'm sorry that I've hurt you." Because he would never do that. He would never lift a finger to hurt him. He adored him even now, under all the screaming and the vitriol. Even after all these years and Kanto and distance. [break][break]

And while he knew he would never be enough for someone like Luci, his goal had been to play the part as long as he could .As long as he'd let him. As long as he was the reason Luci was happy, for however long he deigned that to be be his purpose.

Reliefs floods him when Luci is still within arms reach. He goes to him, eyes wide and panting softly before freezing as the man deigns to look at him. He doesn't understand it. He doesn't get it at all. What did it matter if his name was different? He still responded to Concord. But then again, Paxton would be anything Luci wanted him to be, if it meant Luci might decide to spend a little more time with him. [break][break]

"Why are you upset?!" he asked "What do you mean I lied?" he continued desperate for him to stay, to calm down. He didn't want him to leave. He didn't think he could take him leaving like this. [break][break]

"I'm still-" he began, before clamping his mouth shut as the thought struck him. [break][break]

Because [break][break]

'I'm still the same person-!'
[break][break]

Is most definitely a lie. And Paxton is seeing what he was so afraid of all this time he'd spent with Luci, catching up with him. [break][break]

This is the moment Luci realizes he's changed for the worse. That he's just fragments of who he used to be badly welded back together by sheer force of will and a pipe dream. [break][break]

His throat is tight as the panic and the grief creep in. Because of all the times he'd imagined this moment, he hadn't thought it would be this violent. He didn't think it would hurt this bad. [break][break]

"Please explain it to me, Luciano. I...I don't know what you mean." [break][break]

He steels himself. He steels Concord. That delusional bastard he thought he'd left dead and buried in the fields of Kanto. No. Instead Concord Hallas lays here, dying, in his arms as the worst possible outcome begins to play out before him. No matter how much he had secretly prayed it never would.

Paxton let out a bark of laughter. "I'm kidding." he said as they continued their course. When Derek sends his partner to maintain the perimeter he moves to pull out his own pokeball. Joules the Magnezone flies out, beginning to join Azirim as well. The small break in work makes him take in their surroundings. "This place is kind of gross, isn't it?" he asked. But...we should have some reports about these events if you request the Head Labs." he said, frowning slightly at Caelum. [break][break]

"Postdormitum. It was this violent and quick conflict we had around Granite Cave. Rifts opened up into Ultra Space and both League and Rocket dove in to find this...SEAL." he said. "We didn't manage to secure it unfortunately." [break][break]

He gestured at his pokemon as they milled around the trainers. "In there we found this stuff called Dream Mist which appeared a couple years ago during this Litleo Minior Shower." he continued. "Not sure where it comes from, but it just leaks out from the fabric of space time, I guess. Makes weird things appear. That's where these PARADOX pokemon come from." he said. "We've tried interacting with them but...as far as we know, they've only existed since the moment we encountered them." he shrugged. "Perhaps their sudden existence is why some are so violent." "Hoenn is very...strange. But I imagine for a scientist, there's a plethora of interesting things to study. If dangerous."

They Grow Up So Fast [s]

The morning had been particularly busy with meetings and paperwork to be archived or distributed. He'd settled into his chair to work quickly before lunch happened only to see a little reminder pop up. A one on one? He scrolled through, noting the rest of his day was canceled. [break][break]

He blinked, trying to remember the details before finally realizing he'd been the one to cancel his meetings. He'd had a feeling this would take long, and he didn't want to rush his visitor. So at 15 until they arrive, he closes up shop, sending the last of his emails and beginning to file away papers and throw away trash. Hopper is exceptionally helpful with this TELEPORTing away trash after the little wastebasket fills. [break][break]

Empty water bottles and chip bags, receipts and old sticky notes. Anything he'd cleared dealt with when into the garbage. Finally, he turned to the small mirror hanging on his wall, checking himself over for anything out of order. Paxton began retying his hair which had come loose in the flurry of activity. He tightened his tie, adjusted the suspenders. Made sure there were no stains on his shirt, retied his shoes. Once he feels presentable, and his office is deemed clean, he wipes off the visit chair and sends his partner out. [break][break]

The Porygon is quick to move, TELEPORTing outside to greet Genevieve with an electronic cry, and then opening the door with its psychic power, before floating right in. Paxton's already seated, having finished clearing his desk and taking a moment to finish up the half open water bottle he'd found. [break][break]

He twisted the cap back on before glancing over at the cadet and then smiling in recognition. "Genny- Genevieve right?" he said. "How've you been?"

He arches an eyebrow at the comment on the Rocket Boss, but refrains from saying anything further. After all, he'd been asking the League to collaborate with Rocket on the Meteor issue once upon a time. He couldn't have expected Rocket to risk their lives like that- or well, maybe he could've. But they paid their price. He thinks the Silent Icelands was part of that karma. [break][break]

"That's good. As long as it's nothing serious." Not like what he'd say next. "Eris, I came to check in on you. But we have to talk...about your lifestyle and the choices you're making." he began. He thinks about his past. His sister before the was. His search for her. All the time she'd spent alone, in hiding and Paxton rolling in too little, too late. And now how long it'd been and how far that gap had widened between them. [break][break]

He's sure he's tried to talk about it before and it went nowhere. Now he'd have to see this conversation through.

"Oh, that sounds nice. I'm from Kanto and not even the coastal area. The humidity is what kills me." he said with dramatic fanning of his face. Paxton gives small claps of appreciation for the Raichu before turning his attention to Sansa. "Oh, you should go. I've been on vacation there once. I wanted to see the regional differences for myself." he said. [break][break]

The booth attendant gestures for him to pick a consolation prize. Most are small, but still fun. He opts for a plush keychain of a clown painted meowth. Oliver would like this. [break][break]
