“Shit.” He hisses out haggardly, cuddles the frightened Pokemon in his jacket nice and close as he limps. “It’s fine. Hey? We’re fine!”[break][break]
Toshiaki had been staying overnight when the flames erupted in Littleroot town. Never did he expect a large fire like this to happen out of nowhere. The chances of it being a natural occurrence were slim to none, not with how fast and drastic it’s been spreading. He didn't have time to think about who caused it, though.[break][break]
Because in the blink of an eye it all went to hell.[break][break]
The three wild Zigzagoon secured in his coat cry out.[break][break]
Crimson stains threads of silver hair as the dark blotch of red in the back of his head pools larger. Same for the gash in his back. Everything was turning dark and fuzzy, but he kept willing himself to keep walking toward some sort of safety. [break][break]
The air quality is terrible, like an unfiltered steam bath. Although he’s thankful to at least be outdoors. When part of the house he was staying in began to deteriorate, Toshiaki charged out as fast as he possibly could. And when he did, he happened upon some wild Zigzagoon that were trying to flee the disaster, shielding them in the process. Talk about friends in unlikely places. His back and head took a nasty hit from some fallen tree branches. However he still had the strength to move, therefore he grins and bears it. [break][break]
“Hey, it’ll be alright. Just snuggle in there and you’ll be safe—”[break][break]
In that moment all the strength saps from his knees as they buckle. Off guard as it took him, Toshiaki manages to twist himself mid-fall, promptly landing on his side as he protects the Zigzagoon in his arms. Struggling to keep his eyes open, their cries grow muffled as the world around him begins to turn dark.[break][break]
“It.. will be.. a-alright—”[break][break]

His uncle was a lot more stoic and rough around the edges than he remembers, though he was just a little toddler back then. Quietly, Toshiaki questions what he’s been through in his head. Begins to piece together why all the pictures frames of him back at home were placed face down, the solemn expression on his mother’s face whenever a mention of him was whispered across the room. [break][break]
He was old enough to know now he believes, but he’ll save that for another time. [break][break]
“Uncle Ren.. Uncle Ren..” He mumbles it a few times to himself. Then he pauses in recollection, looking up at the older man with a sparkle in his eyes. [break][break]
“Wait I think.. I used to tug your hair a lot? Didn’t I? Yeah! I did!” He laughs slightly, before nuzzling his chin atop his Togetic’s head. “S-Sorry about that.”[break][break]
This.. is a lot to process. His head hurts, and his stomach grumbles something fierce. He forgot to eat before going to see that horrid match. A purposeful decision, because no one should watch that on a full stomach. [break][break]
He shuffles his shoes in the dirt. An old habit from childhood. “Hey, Uncle Ren? Maybe.. we could go somewhere and talk? Like a diner?” Something’s bound to be still open. Or if not, talking outside on a bench was better than just standing out in the open.[break][break]

Piece by piece her walls crumble down, much to his surprise. He didn't mind that Lilith was more on the defensive side. Truthfully, he would be too if he were in her shoes. Actually they practically are, constantly watching his back for certain strangers, worried one day he’ll fall back into his old miserable life. He just.. has a bit more freedom regarding the situation. [break][break]
“Lilith.”[break][break]
Her words, erratic and clumsily spoken as they are, touch his heart.[break][break]
The development from not wanting to recognize him, to comforting him of all things? That can’t have been easy for her.[break][break]
Toshiaki takes hold of both her hands, handles all her scars and calluses with utmost care, as he too knew the pain of carrying heavy burdens. Toshiaki leans in (bangs of snowy silver mixing together with hers) as he presses a chaste kiss to her forehead, before pulling back slowly. His warm smile doesn’t waver.[break][break]
“Thank you. I’ll never leave you alone again. Promise. Even after all these years, you never stopped being in my thoughts, or my friend.”[break][break]

Toshiaki’s heart aches at the sight of the cast, but is glad to know it hasn’t dampered on the Absol’s spirits one bit. He grins and lightly rubs the affectionate Pokemon’s sides, singing praises of his bravery for enduring such a hefty wound.[break][break]
Though the conversation quickly escalates, with Rae literally turning it forward, tugging him along for the ride. Sure it takes him a bit off guard, but oddly, he doesn’t seem to mind being in her hold. He’s known as an oddball for a reason. [break][break]
Once released from her grip, he laughs heartily. “You’re fine! And it’s the Hoenn Gym Challenge! You should try it sometime. It really pushes you and your Pokemon to your limit!”[break][break]
Then out of nowhere Rae pulls out the massive gummy bear he gifted her for Palentine’s day, and he grins at the sight. She keeps it with her? Talk about snacks on the go![break][break]
“Sweet! Thanks, Rae. You’re the best!” He happily accepts the candied ear, already starting to chew on it. “But yeah! There’s contests, gym challenges, you can do a lot here in this region. I really like the freedom here.”[break][break]

The Lilycove Department Store definitely didn’t expect all this fierce competition. Luckily, the plates of food just kept on coming without delay. Grimer’s delighted not only to eat, but to clean off the plates for the dedicated employees! Grubby hands of green sludge hold onto the plates, SWALLOWING full course meals down it’s hatch with minimal effort. Toshiaki could be heard cheering on the GLUTTONOUS grimer from the sidelines. [break][break]
Alolan Grimer shovels down multiple helpings of food, crunching and chomping, while miraculously regurgitating clean plates in one piece. ~~How that’s possible we don’t question but it’s pretty impressive.~~ Soon there’s piles upon piles of empty plates stacked high like towers, her very own badges of victory. Once finished, she leaves out a mighty BURP.[break][break]
Win or lose this event, the Grimer doesn’t leave on an empty stomach!

The ebb and flow of the battle kept constantly shifting, like the actual ocean’s tides. Most inexperienced trainers would be in a panic at this point, but not Toshiaki. The thrill of it all has him wishing for this battle to never end, exhilarated to his very core. The music also gets his blood pumping. [break][break]
Toshiaki grins, gripping his fists. “Alright! Now this is fun!”[break][break]
Togetic grimaces at the bite, but is by far more offended at the crude speech Obstagoon directs at them. How awful! Togetic squeals out, clearly angered at the Pokemon. Whimscott floats around in the rushing wind, awaiting it’s next direction. Many people wouldn’t think, but he’s a sharp thinker. Time to eliminate the biggest thread on the battlefield. [break][break]
“Alright! Whimscott, while Noivern’s off groove use Growth! And Togetic, hit that bratty bat with an Ancient Power!”[break][break]
On his trainer’s command rocks manifest out of thin air in an eerie purple glow, while Whimscott temporarily expands in size, their offensive stats increasing in power. For Pokemon with such sweet appearance they were really going for the kill here![break][break]

For Hoenn being a region as massive as it is, the world itself sure is small! He hadn’t imagined running into Rae here of all places. Not that he’s complaining, quite the opposite in fact. He grins that winning smile of his while the Togetic by his side squeals happily at the sight of a familiar face. [break][break]
“Hey! Not much. Mostly training, been slowly tackling the league challenge here. It’s been really fun!” He also grabs some candy off of the plate. This event has made him into a sweet tooth kinda guy. “I came here cause it’s a great place to make friends and meet new people, guess you had the same idea huh?” [break][break]
He pauses briefly, thinking of a good ice breaker to ask. He decides to go simple. [break][break]

Out of all the outcomes he anticipated for the evening Toshiaki hadn’t seen this coming at all. Not that he was born with any kind of insane foresight, but this was enough to knock anyone off their groove, and his rhythm’s definitely all fuddled now. The man’s cryptic words confused him even more. [break][break]
Toshiaki is known for his naivety, but was he ignorant enough to believe a far-fetched claim like this? Realistically, this guy could just be messing with him, taking advantage of this vague feeling of nostalgia coursing madly through his brain. [break][break]
However, the more Toshiaki looks at him, he can recall things he normally didn’t remember. A relative; Somewhere in-between a boy and a teen, but neither. His memories of him aren’t kind or negative, simply neutral. Still, something clicks, and it’s anything but positive as he takes a few clumsy steps backward.[break][break]
“Hey- You aren’t here to take me back, are you?” His whole face blanches white. For someone who looks so strong and tall, he was anything but in that moment. Togetic squirms in his arms, worried trills echoing between the pair.[break][break]
“No! I won’t go back with him!” Like the old pillars erect in Ancient sinnoh, he crumbles, withers away with each passing second at the thought of that cursed family— that man. [break][break]
Every part inside him screams. He wants to run, get away as far as possible but his legs refuse to budge an inch. [break][break]
Like a setting sun gold hues fade from view, eyes squeezed shut. Calm down.. breathe. [break][break]
“I’m sorry. You’re right. I do sort of remember, but I don’t know you anymore.” He trembles. “Just please, don’t make me go back there — to my d-dad. ”[break][break]

Yet another dead end.[break][break]
He hated going to these shady looking places, crawling with all sorts of ruffians and other bad-hearted people looking to make a quick buck. But he knows he’s not everybody is like that. Maybe they're also here for the same reasons. Though he had no time to dwell on what-ifs. He just wants to find the friend that was wrongfully taken away from him. But again, no luck to the search that’s been spanning years and years. Optimistic as he is, Toshiaki was starting to lose hope. And it shows.[break][break]
He needed to get away from there. Even after he leaves the illegal fighting-ring, the sounds of Pokemon brawling against their wills echo loudly in his ears. He cringes in remembrance, while the Togetic in his lap trilling sadly, feeling every bit of it’s trainer's inner turmoil within. Mauville city was calm and tranquil at night, nothing like that place, but it wasn’t enough to quell the negative feelings rooting deep in his heart.[break][break]
“I need to move, walk, or somethin..” Sighing, he stands up from the bench, planning to go on his merry way elsewhere. Or well, so he attempts to before he bumps into the back of somebody else. [break][break]
A ranger more specifically. Shit. Did he see him come over from Slateport?[break][break]
Faking expressions wasn’t a strong suit of his, he clearly looked panicked. He hugs onto Togetic tighter, smiling nervously up at the man of important authority. “Whoops. Uh, sorry! Didn’t mean to bump into ya there.”[break][break]
Then, Toshiaki gets a closer look at his face. Why did he-[break][break]
He frowns, looking at the older man quizzically. “Sorry, but.. do I know you?”[break][break]

SPACE-TIME DISTORTION #1

Hoenn was just full of surprises! So when Toshiaki heard there was something amiss in Petalburg woods, he just had to go and check it out for himself! His inner adventurer demands it. Reaching the depth of the woods the young trainer stands there, baffled. He witnesses the crazy scientific phenomenon unfolding before him all he can do is gawk, jaw slacked down in pure awe. [break][break]
“This is … SO COOL!”[break][break]
Everything inside the distorted space felt warm, yet cold? It excited him, right done to the bone. Apparently he wasn’t the only one reacting to the distortion in time. [break][break]
The pokeball attached to his belt shivers and shakes, until Growlithe pops out into the open, howling loudly. Toshiaki panics.[break][break]
“Buddy? What’s wrong-”[break][break]
And just like that, a white glow envelops the canine Pokemon. He looks.. different. Toshiaki once again is left in silence. [break][break]
He scoops up the fire dog in his arms, who affectionately kisses it’s trainer’s face over and over. He smiles, and laughs softly.[break][break]
Maybe.. Change is good. [break][break]
