Ogerpon considered her opponent knocked out, so she tucked away her cudgel in her leaf kimono. No-one could have gotten up from a direct hit like that. There was a hint of sorrow in the ogress’ starry eyes.

That sorrow dissipated the moment a faint, familiar scent wafted through the air; the scent of a mutt, a bird, and a monkey. The Oni scowled like an angry Kabuki actor, baring her fangs.

“Grrrrr… Pon!”

Suddenly, the area was carpet-bombed by a swarm of mechanical insects. Trainers and civilians alike scattered to save their lives. Being directly in the enemy’s line of fire, Pon shielded herself with another Spiky Shield.

“Gotta find cover! Come, Chomper!” Andrea tried in vain to drag her Hydreigon to safety, struggling to lift the injured dragon with her puny arms. One of the high-tech blasts headed straight towards the duo. In a split second, Chomper used his remaining strength to shove his trainer out of harm’s way.

“Chomper! CHOMPEEEEEEEEEEERRR!!!!!!”

As her vision whitened, the girl thought she heard a voice solemnly responding to her despondent cries.

The explosion replaced every other sound with a buzzing in her ears that persisted long after the fact. Groggily getting up, she limped about in frantic search of her partner. Instead, she found a gruesome mass that no longer resembled her lifelong friend.

“What have you done…” The young woman muttered, biting her lip hard enough to draw blood. “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!” She wailed---no, she shrieked. An Ultra Ball burst open, an alien cry joining her harrowing cacophony of grief, anger, and spite.

Two dragons whose hearts were tainted by darkness. Two powerful Z-Moves that crystallized the concept of ‘biting’. Their clash was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Had this not been a battle of life or death, Andrea might have enjoyed herself. Chomper had found a worthy rival from a dwindling list of candidates.

When the dust had settled, the Hydreigon looked beaten within an inch of his life, his heads reduced to the original three. Numerous deep lacerations riddled his chubby frame, bleeding something fierce. If health points were a thing, his would be at 1, clinging to consciousness through sheer force of will.

“Chomper, return!” The girl tried to withdraw her partner, but his Pokéball refused to function. “Darn it, it’s not working!” He had already been locked into this battle by the Roaring Moon’s cursed jaws. There was no escape unless one of them fell.

An even more urgent issue presented itself when the Mega Absol decided to target the gym trainers and civilians cowering in the back. “Pon, stop them!” Andrea cried out, her ogreish friend swinging her signature Ivy Cudgel at Absol’s head.

Gritting her teeth, the draconic cosplayer shot a resolute glare at Kouji. “We won’t lose to you! We won’t lose to someone who spits on the idea of peace! If winning is what it takes in order to be right, then we WILL win!” She declared in a moment of misplaced confidence.

Mega Evolution allowed Absol to free itself from its wooden prison. With its newfound power, it stood a better chance against the great Oni. However, Pon had a few more tricks up her very long sleeve. A Spiky Shield intercepted the attack, ensuring that the angelic beast would be the only one taking damage.

“If those are your orders, then there’s something wrong with whoever gave them!” Andrea continued to rebuke her opponent, her Hydreigon-shaped fists shaking. “Just disobey them! Can’t you see how pointless this whole thing is? Why are we even fighting? There are people out there doing everything in their power to stop this war, and you’re spitting on their effort!”

People like Naomi Sato, whom Andrea was letting down by partaking in the aggression. But how could she speak of peace to someone who only understood violence without learning their language? The girl deactivated her Sygna Suit, and in its place, a Z-Ring shone with exotic energies.

The Shiny Hydreigon roared. Six spectral heads--manifestations of his draconic spirit--sprouted from his sides, adding up to a whopping nine heads that descended upon the Roaring Moon with ravenous hunger. It was an act of raw brutality, in other words exactly what Team Rocket wanted.

Never in a million years could Andrea have imagined that someone who put as much effort in his challenges as Josh could be having trouble. “Sorry to hear about that. I hope business picks up sooner rather than later.” Because if it didn’t, he could end up like Alexei Ivanov, a former Gym Leader who’d also relied heavily on non-traditional challenges and who’d also been screwed over by the newer regulations.

At the mention of masquerades, the cosplaying aficionado was naturally fully on board. “I’d love to dress up with you! Who knows, by that time, you might even be Raikou’s real avatar!” The girl remarked with a big smile on her face. “Maybe I’ll dress up as Pon this year. We would look so cute together if we wore matching masks!” She added.

The Paradox Pokémon adopted a hit-and-run strategy, making use of its superior speed to zip around the aerial battlefield on its crimson wings, which sliced Chomper with their razor-sharp edges. It may not have been honorable, but it was smart, proving that Kouji had the brains to match Andrea’s brawn.

“C-Chomper!” The girl cried out in WORRY, causing her Sygna Suit to activate once more, gradually healing her draconic partner’s wounds. “I’ve got your back! Hang in there and wait for an opening!”

The order was understood. The pseudo-legendary dragon bode his time, getting Worked Up with each hit he had to endure, while his trainer’s cleric support kept him in the game.

“Have you ever considered that I DON’T wanna kill you?” The dragon-costumed woman retorted to Kouji’s taunting. “I’d much rather be your friend, but you’re not acting like a friend right now! Tearing these people away from their homes just because they’re in your way is the same as hurting them! Where are they supposed to live? Do you not give a crap about that either?”

Seeing her quadruped opponent make it out relatively unscathed made Ogerpon puff out her cheeks in frustration. After landing on the ground with a backflip, the pint-sized ogress attempted to ensnare the Absol in the thick roots of a Frenzy Plant.

Andrea shook her head at the Rocket grunt’s line of questioning. “No, I’m not an avatar. Pon is my friend, because unlike you, she would never hurt innocent people! But if you keep acting like what you’re doing is right, we WILL use our strength to stop you!” She declared.

When Shalin joked about reining up Kyogre, the dragon maiden paused, giving the other woman a dead-eyed stare. “No. You could not.” She said bluntly. A mere human could never tame Kyogre. Even Lord Rayquaza had struggled to make the sea titan submit.

Whiskers was a fearsome dragoness, but not quite as untameable as Chomper, who would let no-one but his trainer ride on his back. Andrea could tell what the greenette was thinking, giving her a nod of approval. “If you wanna give her a ride, feel free! You just gotta ask her nicely first!”

As the two friends resumed their trip towards the birthplace of Johto’s sacred beasts, they started to talk about their respective Gyms.

“To be honest, mine’s not doing too hot…” Andrea admitted with a dejected sigh. “With the Champion Assessment postponed, people feel less motivated to try the Gym Challenge, and the minor league has suffered the most because of it.”

At the end of the day, trainers cared more about the Gyms that actually awarded them shiny, official badges. Everything else was all too often considered a ‘waste of time’.

“But enough about that! I can’t wait to learn about Ecruteak’s traditions! Maybe we’ll even stumble upon a mask shop if we’re lucky!” The young woman beamed.

“Poni~!” Ogerpon cried in excitement, positively giddy at the prospect.

The boy’s bravado was admirable, but it could only get him so far. If he was not careful about picking his fights, he could meet the same tragic end as kyle lopez. However, he had already made up his mind regardless of what Andrea told him.

Their casual talk of Z-Crystals was interrupted by a pair of approaching Magneton. One of them was easily dispatched by a Dark Pulse courtesy of Mecha-Chomper, but the electromagnetic forces at play caused the second one to undergo a mutation.

“It evolved into a Magnezone!” Said the dragon-costumed woman with a gasp. “Quick, Terratron, hit it with your Sacred Sword!” A blade of energy came out of the Iron Boulder’s head, slicing the saucer-like Pokémon for super-effective damage.

Chomper’s body was raked by nasty, prehistoric claws, but the pain was not enough to quell his primal RAGE. He was classified as the Brutal Pokémon for a reason. The second Outrage was even stronger than the last thanks to Sygna Suit support.

That same RAGE was starting to affect Andrea herself as a result of their synchronization. Kouji’s derision agitated her even more, each word adding fuel to the fire. “Shut up! What’s wrong with wanting to help people? You’re the freak for wanting to hurt them when they’ve done nothing to you!”

Overhearing the Rocket grunt’s orders, Ogerpon gave chase to his Absol, jumping from one treetop to the next with the deftness of a ninja.

“PON!”

The orange-faced ogre attempted to Play Roughly with its prey, throwing a flurry of devastating kicks. Even with no gimmicks, the Oni’s natural strength more than sufficed.

Humans did not belong at sea. The ocean was an unforgiving place where the bigger fish ate the smaller one. And yet, none of these happy-go-lucky beach-goers had gotten the memo.

A young boy floated on his inflatable tube, blissfully unaware of the underwater shadow that stalked him. A dorsal fin jumped out, followed by the wild Sharpedo it was attached to, jaws wide open to turn the little kid into a snack.

Suddenly, a much larger Gyarados emerged from the tumultuous waters, using its serpentine body like a Dragon Hammer to wallop the shark, saving the boy in the nick of time.

At first, the boy was terrified of the red leviathan. However, after realizing that it was docile, he thanked it, before swimming back to his worried mother, hopefully never to make the mistake of going out at sea again.

Surrendering would be the wiser move. It was the option that resulted in fewer casualties. However, having recently survived the horrors of prison, Andrea refused to let herself or anyone else suffer the same ordeal at Rocket’s hands.

“No. I will fight for these people!” Because if she let them down, it would be like letting the people of Fallarbor down. Small towns needed to look out for each other. “It’s you who should give up! RAWR!”

And thus, she made the regrettable decision of fighting back, making her choice known with a resounding roar--a Dragon Cheer that boosted her Pokémon’s morale.

Had Navy been there, he probably would have told her that fighting was the only option when words failed. And then there was her recent exchange with THEO BECKETT… Those two men of completely opposing worldviews had convinced her of the inevitability of this war.

Thanks to the dragon maniac’s BOLDNESS, Chomper resisted the already not-very-effective biting move, retaliating with a brutal Outrage at close range.

The unbreakable bond between the girl and her Hydreigon, and the stacking boosts granted by her Sygna Suit, made them a force to be reckoned with in battle. It was the sole reason they had survived against the likes of Kyurem, Kyogre, and Tapu Koko.

Doug, the only level-headed individual in this entire room, saw right through the councilman’s bluff. Silph responded with more derision. More scolding, like he had done almost two years prior during a certain conundrum in cyberspace.

The chessmaster always lost his cool when his pieces did not move as he desired.

He was right, they were the League. The same League that had tried to doom Sea Hoenn. The same League that had abandoned Elinor Anderson in her time of need. The same League that had once poisoned Josh Devlin’s mind, almost costing Eris Halla her life.

Andrea could resign as Minor Gym Leader tomorrow, if they gave her a reason.

“Fine, we’ll ‘piss off’!” The young dragoness huffed. Unless stopped, she would storm off the building, but not before shooting a sideways glance at Navy.

“Kouji.” The girl said back to him, recognizing the white-haired grunt as the same one she had briefly tussled with in Area Zero. How quaint their conflict had been back then, fighting over which side of the cave ‘belonged’ to them. To think they had almost become friends after fending off a wild Scream Tail together.

Their present encounter was devoid of such nuance. Kouji was there as an enemy. Andrea quickly activated her Sygna Suit. The trainer’s PHYSICAL SHIELD made her synced partner resist the enemy’s attack, but Chomper was now locked in battle with the Roaring Moon. “Chomper, use Crunch!” The cosplayer ordered.

As the two dragons fought tooth and nail, the young PokéManiac felt a pang of sadness over what could have been. The two of them were supposed to duke it out at her Gym. That would have been an honorable battle. That would have been an enjoyable battle. This was not it.

“We shouldn’t be fighting! Not like this!” Andrea yelled at the boy turned butcher, clenching her Hydreigon-shaped fists. “You should leave right now! All of Team Rocket should leave! Petalburg doesn’t belong to you! Not this side, or that side, or any side!” She spat.

“Pon! PON!” Ogerpon yapped in solidarity with the girl. The diminutive ogress was already armed with her signature cudgel, ready to trade blows with anyone in order to protect the townspeople.

‘Thrust’ was the right word. Andrea truly wanted no part in the war, but circumstances had forced her. How could she stand idly and watch a small town get devastated? Today it was Petalburg, tomorrow it could be her hometown.

Chaos and bloodshed echoed in the streets. It was eerily reminiscent of the Slateport invasion, but this was no simulation; this was real. Evacuating the civilians was top priority.

The Minor Gym Leader had brought some extra hands. Calling them gym trainers would be generous. Her gym had neither the infrastructure nor the funding of Josh Devlin’s gym. Most of her helpers were volunteers from Fallarbor whose Pokémon were trained for agricultural work, not combat.

Andrea’s Salamence with its Intimidating presence kept any Rocket grunts at bay, while her Aggron and Kangaskhan shielded the gym trainers as well as escaping civilians from debris with their use of Protect. That left herself, her signature Hydreigon, and Ogerpon in the front line.

“K-keep up the good work, everyone!” The draconic cosplayer hollered, trying to remain positive in spite of the bleakness of the situation. She had faith in her Pokémon, her friends, to pull through. However, as she would soon find out, friendship had no place on the battlefield.
