Alex continued to berate him. Memo crossed his arms over his chest, trying to stay calm even as his boyfriend yelled at him, ready to fire back with just as much emotion until it got to the point when he said at the expense of me losing you and then he sucked in a breath like he’d been struck.

“Alex--,” he said, wiping his black-stained hands on his jeans and reaching out to take his boyfriend’s hand before he could run away. “--I--I’m sorry I scared you. But this isn’t… just about power. It’s about being prepared to use every tool at my disposal to protect the people around me. To protect Fortree. To protect you.”

It would be so easy to cave and go back to the tried and true routine of giving in and hugging him and promising him everything was going to be okay.

“And… yeah, that’s a trade-off I’m ready to make. If it keeps you safe.”

She flew in circles, painfully slow, and every movement of the sun through the clouds or a vehicle outside made her twitch as though something had jumped in her face.

It was a far cry from the lithe, fierce, beautiful dragon-bat that had carried him INTO Littleroot. It made Guillermo’s heart hurt.

There was a loud crash, and Memo turned to look down the hall towards the gym office.

“...Alex?” he tried. No answer. “Ethan? Claire?”

The gym floor lurched, and Memo pitched forward with a yell.
