Sometimes you just needed to throw yourself at a giant swarm of giant Walking Teddy-bears, and sure they might break your spine, and leave you unable of doing anything for the rest of your life, or if you are lucky, just hug you to death. Still, it would be worth it, or so Johanna had decided as she stood in front of the swarm of Bewear.

Pokéball in and Mimikyu by her side. Though the latter didn’t stay there, instead it left her to charge the swarm, trying to separate an individual from the group.

While Mimikyu did that. Johanna would wait and watch, ready to throw a quick Pokéball at one of the plushy bears when an opportunity arose.

She laughed, the pun was not lost upon her. She had a feeling there would be a lot of those puns coming her way. And she didn’t mind it. And so she accepted Megan’s hand as she listened to the girl’s suggestion. It sounded like a plan. “Now that you mentioned it, it is getting colder.” She stated. She hadn’t noticed. But maybe that was because of Megan’s presence.

Megan’s nervousness didn’t go unnoticed by Johanna, she decided to grant Megan the same kindness she had given her and not make a big deal out of it. “Oh, I don’t mind at all. In fact, I’d love that.” Johanna smiled. “Yeah, I have a place we can stay at.” She forgot to mention it was a Hotel room on the finer side of Slateport since she didn’t live in Slateport permanently, though she had considered the notion.

And with that their ‘date’ reached the end of the Beach Arc, and moved on to Arcs yet unknown.

Sometimes Johanna forgot that people had to work for a living. The notion that Megan had had an actual normal job, hadn’t crossed her mind, even if she might’ve mentioned it before. And so her story was given and she felt relieved both by letting the words and thoughts out, but also because Megan didn’t seem to judge her for it.

She had feared Megan might judge her for having had what most would probably dream of since she figured Megan already knew she was rich given her Joy family ties, she couldn’t remember if she had mentioned it, not that it mattered right now.

At first, Megan seemed to reminisce before turning her attention to offering her yet more words of wisdom. Johanna sent a perplexed gaze toward Megan. The simplicity of those notions was astounding, but not in a bad way. “I… I never thought about it like that. But you are right.” She turned to look out at the sea, trying to hide the blush which was forming once she processed that Megan acknowledged the date for being nice. “And yeah, it feels very nice.” She closed her eyes and took a deep breath before she returned her attention to Megan, blush and all. “And I think it was much needed, at least for me. I can’t even remember the last time I was on a date as nice as this.” There she acknowledged it, but only because Megan acknowledged it first.

Johanna listened to Megan’s wise words. Even if they were taken from a book, their usage was appropriate for the situation. She had to start looking at how people perceived her, and what sort of effect she had on them, rather than listen to the opinions of her inner critic. She noticed how Megan allowed her gaze to wander towards the sea, and she wondered if there was anything to be seen there. And so she allowed her gaze to wander as well, though it didn’t stay upon the sea for long, quickly returning to shore as Megan continued to talk.

Johanna never broke the rambling. She quite enjoyed the sound of Megan’s voice. It was nice, to have someone who could fill the air when she didn’t know how to. “Yeah, you are rambling. But I don’t mind that.” She started turning her gaze to the sea for the second time as she tried to formulate the words in her head.

“I suppose I just think it’d be unfair to dump my baggage on you like that,” Johanna spoke thoughtfully. “But I guess now is as good a time as any to elaborate.” A small sigh escaped her. Not one of defeat, but one made in preparation for talking about a touchy subject. “You know, thinking about it from an outside perspective, it seems fairly mild compared to some of the things other people go through.” And yet another paused, the words fought to stay in if only to make sure Megan’s perception of her wouldn’t change. But at last, she pushed the words out. “All my life I’ve been trained and tested to meet the expectations of my family.” She paused. “And so far, it doesn’t seem like I’ve met any of those expectations…” She gazed out towards the sea, for a brief moment, she wondered if it was worth sticking around. What would happen if she just set sail to another region, another life?

She melancholic snicker escaped her as she turned her attention to Megan. “I know, it doesn’t sound like much, but I’ve yet to find a way to throw away the weight of their disappointment” She felt better now that she had put words to the feelings she had bottled up for who knew how long. And yet, she still felt her family’s metaphorical ball and chain around her foot.

Her shoulders felt a little bit lighter as if a small weight had been removed from them. Though it wasn’t much, having admitted her flaw to Megan meant more than she had thought. Even if Megan claimed that there was no need to apologize, Johanna still felt like it. It was her bias that had caused this rift to appear in the first place, it was her flaw that she needed to fix.

Johanna nodded. “That it can.” She stated agreeing. Johanna knew the struggle all too well, whether it be family or friends. Making up for her mistakes, or her lack of talent with the kindness and politeness to make people like her. It was rough, even if her politeness often were genuine.

“Thanks, that means a lot to me.” Johanna blushed, flustered even from what seemed like a genuine compliment. Even if somewhere in the back of her mind, there was still that small voice trying to sour it, she reminded herself that she had no reason to think Megan wasn’t being genuine. “And honestly. I don’t know why my thoughts work the way they do. I suppose it’s probably just the way I’ve been raised?” She seemed unsure of the answer as she looked at Megan. She also felt bad for unloading her baggage like that. This was meant to be a joyous occasion, and here she was being dragged down by the Baggage of her family.

The world is cruel and uncaring. The time spent with Dorian had taught her this. Nobody was going to come and save her from the depths of sin in which she was slowly drowning. She was too far gone, she might as well embrace it. Be the Rocket that they expected her to be.

And so that’s why she was here. Standing beneath the moon, light dulled in the fog covering the harbor. She sent indifferent glances toward her companion. She’d have preferred to do this alone, but no. They wanted someone else with her. Maybe they didn’t trust her yet.

“It probably is.” She agreed with Madeleine’s statement, and a sense of being appraised washed over her. And she wondered if Madeleine was the cause.

She didn’t know a whole lot about nautical equipment. But she had thought visibility had been an ordeal of the past with modern equipment. Walkie in hand, she was about to radio them when the woman ordered her to do just that.

Raising the walkie to her mouth she pressed the call and began. “Yo, what’s taking so long. We ain’t got all night.” She spoke brashly into the piece of equipment, letting go of the send button so it was ready to receive a message back.

Megan seemed confused. Which only leads Johanna to be washed over with a sense of confusion as well. Had she completely misread her intentions? It was possible, probably even.

Megan explained her intentions, and it made sense. Maybe it was all just showing how close Megan was growing with her? It hadn’t been intentional if there had been anything at all. Maybe it was all just in Johanna’s head.

Still, Megan continued offering Johanna a bow and the suggestion of trying the Petal anyways. Johanna nodded. “Right.” She mumbled enthusiastically before she went to work looking for the prettiest petal she could, gently releasing it from the stem’s grip before turning to Megan pondering how best to go about it. In the end, she decided to attach it to the end of Megan’s hair to add balance between the end of her hair and the top. “There, finished.” She joyfully stated, even if she was a bit unsure of the end product.

She gave Megan a second to straighten up and look at the product before Johanna continued. “And I am the one who should apologize, I should’ve known you didn’t mean anything bad. I suppose I just tend to believe people think the worst of me if that makes sense.” It was hard to admit. But with a life of failing to meet expectations that were just kind of how her thought process went.

It had certainly been time well spent, though a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. She had been given some things to think about. Still, all the things her mother had said and shown, the answers and questions, it would take a long time to process it all and reach a conclusion that might be beneficial to both of them. ”I will do my best.” She said, a timid smile upon her lips as she replied to her mother’s request of enjoying her twenties.

Still, it was a morning well spent for better or worse. And as her mother shooed her out of the room, and ushered her to go be productive. She gave a small acknowledging nod and said. “I will, Mother.” Before she left hurrying along into a future unknown.

She had no plans not for today, not for tomorrow nor the future after. But one thing was for sure. She would face the future head-on and hopefully makes her mother proud.

She didn’t have a mirror, nor did she need one, for she had Megan, and she had seen something that Johanna couldn’t. Her first reaction was to flinch, as Megan reached out for her. But like a scared Growlithe, she quickly realized that a hand moving so slowly didn’t mean danger.

She was curious about what Megan was about to do. So she let her do it. Johanna felt the gentle rearranging of the flower. Johanna blushed but smiled as she felt the hand lingering near her head longer than it needed to. She felt how its presence caused a warmth to spread. Oh, how she hoped her blushing wasn’t too noticeable. “Thank you.” She’d say once Megan finished what she intended to do.

Then Johanna made her question and was granted a laugh as a reply. Her eyes instinctively looked toward the ground, feeling bad for even voicing the thought. Right, it was a silly suggestion. Johanna thought. Though she moved her gaze up, meeting with Megan once more as she came with her explanation. She tried not to let the laughing get to her. She figured Megan didn’t mean it as a slight against her.

“Yeah, I would not have suggested it if I did not think it would fit you,” Johanna meekly stated. “But you might be right. It could make it too busy.” She admitted, giving Megan the option to opt out if she wanted to.

Johanna realized she had probably put too much meaning in the usage of a single word. From what she had already seen of Megan, she should’ve known better than to think there was more than the simple meaning she was given.

While Johanna was sorting herself out, Megan seemed to accept the fate which had befallen her. Johanna watched as she picked the smallest of the litter she had been intent on not harming this otherwise precious sight. Johanna appreciated this, if for no other reason than because it showed a certain amount of forethought on Megan’s part.

With the help of a Pokémon Megan freed the plant from its earthly home. She shook her head. She had not had the forethought to bring a pot or anything of the sort. “I do not.” It was with an almost heavy heart that she admitted to this. But before she could torture herself any further with her lack of preparation. Megan did something which came as a surprise. She had her Gligar clip of a blooming petal and suggested she keep it as an accessory. “Sure.” She gently took the blooming petal. “Thank you.” She looked at it, then wondered how she would attach it in a manner that would keep it safe.

She used her free hand to reach into her pocket, retrieving a small blue hairband. She gently tied it to the end of that one bang of blue hair which kept jumping in front of her face, before gently trying to remind said bang about its spot behind her ear, where it would rest once more for a time. Now with a crystalline petal in tow, like a glittering accessory, she wondered how long it would continue to do so now that it was no longer attached to the flower.

And now as she looked at the sight, she became acutely aware that Megan didn’t have one. “Are you sure it’s okay for me to keep it? Don’t you want one too, I am sure it would fit you?” She looked at Megan. If Megan wanted one, then she was ready to part with hers.

True… Johanna thought while she listened to Megan. There was little they could do to ensure that the scientists would take their little offering, still, the worst they could get was a no, so it was probably worth trying.

She had been turning her attention back to the flower when the words struck her. A jolt of surprise went through her body as Megan admitted to this being a date or at least perceiving it as such. She had been afraid Megan would perceive this as a date, even if Johanna hadn’t intended it to be like that. But now, here she was admitting to just that and seemingly having been alright with it all along.

She got up from her position straightened her back and tried to compose herself. “Oh, Uhm, yeah, definitely enough science!” The addition of her nickname hadn’t helped at all. She didn’t know what to say or do. If she denied the date part then she could hurt Megan’s feelings if this being a date was what she wanted. Not that Johanna didn’t want it to be a date, in fact, it felt like she did.

She took one of her signature deep breaths trying to reign in all the emotions which were quickly overflowing. “Right, do you want the honors?” She gestured to the flower, figuring Megan should be the one to pick which specimen to bring.
