"I'm sure you will, Roach. I'm sure you will." She grinned, before savoring another taste of the margarita in her hands. God, it tasted good.[break][break]

The taste of a good -- fuck it, fun -- business deal, paired with that of a good drink. She savored the rareness of it.[break][break]

When the food arrived, Rita dug into the smoked salmon, never one to stand on ceremony. She'd always had an appetite, in her work-life and her day-to-day alike. If a client was gonna be offended that she liked to stuff her face, they could deal.[break][break]

Roach didn't seem the type, though.[break][break]

"The rest of this lunch we can just shoot the shit, if you want. Talk about anything and everything. The food's great, and the music's not too bad. My time is yours until your plate is clean."[break][break]

Hell, she liked him. And she couldn't say that about all, or even most, of her clients.[break][break]

Rita had been taking a bit of a break from all the chaos that was, well, Hoenn. Meteors, Necrozma attacks, you know the drill. Wild, batshit stuff. It was enough to keep her busy, 24/7.[break][break]

But this swimsuit contest was pretty damn entertaining.[break][break]

The brunette was maybe five margaritas deep now as she watched, enjoying the competition's continuous descent into absurdity, pomp, and ceremony. Some were boring, predictable yawn-fests of 'look at how sexy I am.'[break][break]

But skyler dross got her howling.[break][break]

"Was that forty fucking Wailords?" Rita cackled, jumping up to her feet as her Blaziken turned to her with alarm. "Sweet Arceus. That's incredible. Write that woman's name down, Butch. If she doesn't win, this whole damn thing is rigged." [break][break]

So when the curly-haired woman returned to the stage, Rita stood up with rapturous, drunken applause, putting two fingers to her lips to whistle loudly.[break][break]

What a queen.

There were a lot of yellow-bellied cowards out there, in Unova and Hoenn both, Rita figured. People who turned and ran at the first sight of trouble, tail between their legs. Sort of like the Mightyena before them were doing now, besieged by the combined might of her and Daisuke's Pokemon.[break][break]

"I don't like giving up much, either. Something about it rankles. Always has. If something's worth having, it's worth fighting for, ain't it?" She shrugged leisurely, watching as dawn broke over the horizon to reveal the few remain members of the pack had fled the streets with a whimpering, plaintive howl.[break][break]

She stretched and let out a yawn, walking back to her motorcycle. "If you needed a ride back into town, I'd be happy to give you a lift," she said, grinning as she patted the seat with a wink. "Though something tells me you're planning to get home just fine without me."[break][break]

If nothing else, the man had proven himself more than capable of acting alone. He sure as shit didn't need her to get home safely.[break][break]

"Thanks again for the help, Daisuke. See you around."[break][break]

John Sullivan was direct, and Rita liked that.[break][break]

Age was something that she didn't pay much mind to, because metrics like that rarely illustrated actual, concrete competence. She'd met plenty enough dumb-as-rocks fifty year old men to know that a few decades slapped onto your age didn't mean a damn thing. Well, except that you'd been breathing a little longer than other folks.[break][break]

So when she met Captain Sullivan, Rita flashed a million watt smile and extended a hand. "Pleasure's all mine. You ready to give me a tour, Captain?" [break][break]

The gym leader had a pleasing accent and manner, which she appreciated immediately. Her daddy had taught her that you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat a perfect stranger, and this one had kindly called her Ms. Not Miss, and thank Arceus, not Mrs. It was small in the scheme of things, but what the hell, she liked it just the same.[break][break]

An eyebrow lifted as Rita took a quick survey of her surroundings. Oh, Old Mauville had not been where she'd expected for them to meet, not one bit. Such a shift from the norm hooked her from the jump, and the urban decay that greeted her left Rita's mind whirring with thoughts. This was the dark underbelly of places like Mauville, where a flood of wealth hid the shadows of the actual poverty that crawled beneath even the most sparkling city. [break][break]

"Sure ain't Mauville Hills," she agreed as she followed him further along, stopping before the stadium. The brunette let out a low whistle, impressed by the size and scope of the dilapidated structure -- modest though it was, it was far from humble beginnings. "Well damn, Sullivan. When you said it was a renovation, I have to say this wasn't what I had in mind."[break][break]

She didn't sound displeased at all, however. If anything, Rita sounded delighted.[break]

As Thomas Benoit described life in Hoenn, Rita grinned widely, delighted at his frank candor. "Hah! Insane shitshow, huh? I sure picked the time to move here, didn't I?"[break][break]

Not to be outdone by her partner's efforts, her Blaziken and Onix redoubled their offensive, the former assisting in a flurry of kicks while the latter continued to hurl stones and gravel at the Mightyena pack. Dodging with agile finesse, they were able to make up for their lesser numbers with well-timed evasive maneuvers, working in sync with the full party that Daisuke had brought forth.[break][break]

It would have been an impossible task alone, Rita knew. Daisuke's Pokemon, fortunately, seemed more than well suited to the corralling of the lupine pack, ripping through them with a wide assortment of moves and techniques.[break][break]

"You ever think about moving out, or do you like the chaos?" she asked, an eyebrow raised.[break][break]

"Done. Skyscraper it is." Hey, the customer was always right. And it wasn't as if Rita had a personal preference either way. [break][break]

The brunette drank at her margarita, just in time for the waiter to arrive and ask what they wanted for lunch. "The smoked salmon looks fantastic," Rita said with a thousand-watt smile. Turning to Roach, she said with a wink, "Order what you want, it's on me today. Client privilege."[break][break]

Otherwise known as the cost of doing business. The better their rapport, the smoother this whole shebang would go. Communication was key, and all that jazz.[break][break]

"I think I'm beginning to get a good mental picture of the vibe you're looking for, here," she continued, her mind already racing through the unique possibilities she'd have to consider in building -- drunk people falling from the skyscraper or plummeting into the infinity pool, for example.[break][break]

Leaning back in her chair to admire the nearby view, Rita paused for a moment to think before saying, "So beyond all the business side of this... what are you looking forward to the most with this venture? What gets you excited about it?"[break][break]

She was curious.

It was always a treat to see someone whose Pokemon worked efficiently, even without verbal command. Showed a sense of trust between the trainer and their team.[break][break]

"Let's join in, fellas," Rita said, whistling again as her Blaziken and Onix surged forward. Butch raised his legs up to strike the hounds with DOUBLE KICK, striking them in the jaw as the dogs howled in anger. Her Onix, meanwhile, burrowed into the ground with DIG to catch the Mightyena on the outskirts by surprise as he burst from the earth to swallow the hounds whole.[break][break]

It was chaotic, a mess of warfare from all angles -- but Thomas Benoit was handling it admirably beside her, the two of them managing to keep the steady trickle of Dark-type Pokemon from overwhelming them.[break][break]

Rita laughed, openly enjoying herself as the hoard of Mightyena began to thin. "I have to say, Daisuke, Hoenn might be the most interesting place I've ever lived. You always have adventures like this?"

"Infinity pool on the rooftop, huh? A man after my own heart." Rita grinned, leaning back in her seat with a low whistle. "That's a real vision you've got there, Roach. Clients like you make my job easy." Then her hand reached down to the briefcase at her feet, drawing out a manila folder.[break][break]

Splaying out the photos and papers secured within its contents, Rita arranged them just above Roach's bread plate, tapping them one by one. They were examples of night clubs that Rita had worked on in Unova -- all different, but samples of her expertise that he could draw upon to show her what he had in mind in terms of layout.[break][break]

"So these styles should work with the three levels you're indicating," Rita said, the red polish of her fingernails gleaming as she drew a fingertip across the blueprints. "Have you considered having a below ground-level area? Or are you more into the tall skyscraper style that's popular around Slateport."[break][break]

Rita gave Roach a moment to peruse the images as she drank her margarita, waiting to see if anything piqued his interest.

The request to sneak out incognito had left Rita barking with laughter. "Shit, Mars, I haven't snuck out at night to play hooky since I was sixteen," the CEO had replied on the phone, amused and delighted. Keeping with the theme of 'teenage antics,' a messy bun, some fun experimentation with eye liner and black lipstick, and a quick run to a downtown thrift store were her contributions to secrecy.[break][break]

Except Rita wasn't trying to sneak out to do drugs, get drunk, and make out in the back of some dude's pick-up truck.[break][break]

This was probably an illegal thing, right? Man, rich people crime hit different. It sounded like the fun kind of shenanigans that only well-off people got away with without prison time, and technically, Rita was one of the elite now. Didn't have to twist her arm to get her to volunteer for this one, though.[break][break]

Hey. When in Hoenn... do as the Hoenn CEOs do.[break][break]

And if that was going fast on sleek and shiny cars, by god, Rita would go fast.[break][break]

Rita's hands lovingly traced the surface of the glistening vehicles that Martín del Mar had paraded in front of her, heart singing with anticipation to hear how they purred on asphalt. Top-of-the-line babies, each and every one. How long had it taken to organize this impulsive shindig, anyway?[break][break]

It wasn't like Mars was connected to some crime syndicate that could throw together a sketchy street race on a dime. Could you imagine?[break][break]

"You sure spoil a girl," Rita said as she approached the man among a throng of -- colleagues? friends? strangers? whoever the hell these random people were -- and casually slung an arm around his shoulder. "What's our plan tonight, fellas?"

"C'mon, now," Rita said with a laugh, the wary herd of Kangaskhan glaring daggers at her and her Blaziken. "Butch here wouldn't come between a kid and its mommy, now would you?"[break][break]

Damn, Rita wanted to catch one, though. She loved the tough-as-nails vibe of the Kanghaskan mothers, the way they fiercely protected their young and didn't look less intimidating for it. If anything, the female Pokemon seemed all the more imposing for their motherhood. God help the stupid wild Pokemon that tried to get between them and their cubs.[break][break]

"We aren't interesting in separating any families today, don't you worry." A red-and-white Pokeball flashed brightly in her hands as she spoke. "We're looking for a package deal here."[break][break]

Rita Garnet had never been subtle a damn day in her life, and she wasn't about to start now.[break][break]

As Thomas Benoit summoned his entire team of Pokemon in one go, Rita flashed him a smile. "Quick to take action, huh?" she said approvingly. "You look like someone who's good to have in a crisis, Daisuke."[break][break]

In contrast, she'd only thrown two Pokeballs to start -- Butch, her Blaziken, and Houston, her Onix. "Let's get ready, boys," she said, and the Fighting-type prepared to BULK UP while the Ground-type began to HARDEN in answer.[break][break]

Rita had picked this road for a reason -- it was narrow, and the surrounding dead-end alleys weren't near anything residential or of commercial value. If anything, these few empty areas were glorified empty parking spots, dumpster locations, and broken vending machines. The enforced curfew kept them quiet. Which made her feel quite comfortable doing what she did next.[break][break]

"Houston!" Rita whistled loudly, drawing her Onix's attention to the two alleys where the road diverged. "ROCK SLIDE, there and there, darlin'."[break][break]

The two exits blocked off, leaving just one limited road forward: leading straight to them.[break][break]

"I figure only a few can get in at a time," she said, turning to Daisuke. "We can knock 'em out one by one. You want to do the first honors, or shall I?"[break][break]

The hounds had begun to crest over the hill, now drawing close enough to draw fire.

A firm handshake with good, solid eye contact. Rita liked that.[break][break]

"Well we're off to a great start, then, Roach. Cuz my goal is for you to leave this little meeting feeling satisfied." A smile preceded her next words, the man's familiar drawl drawing forth a knowing, delighted glint in her eyes. "That wouldn't be an Unovan accent I hear, would it? Knew I had a good feeling about you."[break][break]

Garlic knot rolls came out, and Rita casually dug in, indicating that virgil roach should feel free to do the same. He didn't seem the sort to stand on ceremony, but hey, you never knew.[break][break]

"Researching me, huh? " Rita teased, resting her chin on her hand. "Well I'm flattered to hear it, Roach." Though of course he had -- he was a client, and he wanted his business prospects in good hands. And she'd likewise done her due diligence as well. "Speaking of, I did a little digging on you too.
