"Johnny!" Xiura says with delight. "Johnny. It's very nice to meet you."

It really is, and it's very endearing how polite his compliments are in return. "Johnny," she repeats, letting him guide her into a partner position for the waltz. She places her left hand on his shoulder. The sweetly resonant music of the orchestra's "All I Want for Christmas is You" filters through the atmosphere, mingled with the laughter and conversation of people around them. "I'm glad you came, with your back-of-the-closet top hat. I was a little worried I wouldn't find a dance partner." She grins, the corners of her eyes crinkling with good humor behind her mask.

They transition into the first steps of the waltz, Xiura dividing her concentration between small talk and the dance. Even with the split attention, she can't help but tease, drawn in by his self-effacement. "You're not terrible at this," she says, "and my feet and I are very understanding if a misdemeanor occurs."

She calmly sidesteps his foot, adding, "And thank you. About my hair, especially. It took a bit longer than expected. My Clefairy was in charge of spraying down all the strays. Did she do well?"

Of course, Xiura already knows the answer, and she laughs to remember Clefairy meticulously spraying hairspray everywhere, all the while wearing a cloth mask taped at the cheeks so it would stay on. "I didn't want her to breathe in the aerosol, so she wore a face mask. It was very funny--I wish I had taken a picture." She looks down, momentarily shy about how much she's talking to a stranger--this potential new friend. It's a bit harder to gauge his reaction with the mask in the way. But, then again, it's Juno who's conversing tonight, not Xiura, and so, why be ashamed?

They stay relatively confined to one area, in their small, invisible box of ballroom steps: 1-2-3, 1-2-3. "Small talk takes a lot of concentration," she admits. "It's helpful that the waltz is pretty simple. When you're not waltzing, what do you do for fun?"

Xiura took a moment to adjust the sleeve of her traditional Ecruteak ensemble: a kimono with an obi, the weighty fabric both familiar and comforting as it encompassed her in a medley of shooting stars and constellations upon a backdrop of cobalt blue. With a welcoming smile, Xiura bowed before the next guest, ushering them onto the patio of the cafe to have a seat. A group of people raised their hands to wave, and the newcomer scurried towards them, clearly their friend.

The night was a promising one for starfalls, glittering trails of stardust following bright points of light in the dark sky. Clefairy and Froslass trailed between tables, passing out steaming porcelain cups of matcha to the guests. Incineroar was in the back, preparing trays of traditional mitarashi dango, glutinous rice dumplings coated with a sweet soy glaze to add to the other culinary sweets on the tables.

When Aurelie Lefevre arrived, Xiura was quick to express her delight: "Aurelie! It's great to see you! And yes, the weather has been very kind so far." Xiura clapped her hands together in a small prayer to whatever weather spirits were looking down upon them tonight.

"I'll be sure to relax at some point during the night," Xiura promised, though she knew she felt obligated to manage everything so all would run smoothly. It was just a matter of entrusting the rest of the night to her loyal Pokemon helpers, who were wonderful, to be sure, but her first cafe-hosted event had to be simply perfect.

As Aurelie wandered off, Xiura found herself accepting greetings and profuse compliments from another loyal customer. She bowed low in thanks, a flush of happiness and fulfillment overcoming her.

"Roar." Incineroar came up and growled, a tray of dango in either hand.

"Thank you, Incineroar, they look perfect! I hope you set some aside for yourself and the others." He nodded, huffing slightly as he carted the trays over to a nearby table, but not before Xiura could snag a couple.

"Here you go," she said, setting a pair of small plates down before Aurelie and herself. "Please enjoy! They're sweet rice dumplings. And please try everything! Incineroar and Hatterene worked so hard." She laughed, remembering: "Hatterene was using her telekinesis to put fruit in the crepes, and was getting upset that Incineroar was adding too much fruit to them. A couple of them are filled to bursting, so whoever gets those is in for a nice surprise."

Xiura smiles, partly in relief and partly out of giddiness, happy that he (john nelson) said yes!

"I'm so happy you said yes!" she says, taking John's hand and looking towards the dance floor with a grin. "This is my first masquerade, how about you? Winter themes make for such pretty decorations, and everyone's dressed so nicely!" She gives her dance partner a once-over, just in case she might know him: blond hair, pressed black suit with bowtie, black mask, and a top hat. She smiles again upon deciding that, no, she definitely does not know this person.

"Including you! The top hat is a fun touch." Nerves make her a little more talkative than usual with this perfect stranger, and perhaps the Starlight Champagne has lent a little looseness to her tongue. On any other occasion, perhaps she might feel a little ashamed of this, but the alcohol dulls any embarrassment she might feel into a pleasant warmth. And from John's general hesitation, he may be feeling the same way: nervous. But that's all right!

"I'm Xiu... no. Juno. You can call me Juno tonight!" she laughs. "And what about your name?"

While waiting for his answer, she puts down her champagne glass on a nearby table, then tugs at his hand, pulling him onto the dance floor amid the other dancing couples, lilac and violet skirts swaying around her ankles.

"Oh!" Xiura turned her head to follow the gaze of Elisabeth Fiorelli, her attention alighting on john nelson, feeling partly protected by the anonymity of her mask. She tilted her head to the side curiously, saying, "Do you think he would like to dance?" A flutter of shyness arose, and she placed a hand to her cheek in contemplation. Maybe he would, maybe he wouldn't. It wouldn't cause the end of the world to ask.

"I thank you for your splendid, if daring, idea, Miss..." Xiura contemplated. "Aurelie Lefevre?" It was a long shot, to be sure, and she laughed with a shake of her head. To be sure, they shared a Kalosian accent, but there were enough differences from her close friend's voice that Xiura would be surprised if it were indeed her.

With a practiced curtsey, she bade the beautiful if unfamiliar woman goodbye, and trotted over to john nelson and GIDEON GRAVES with sunny optimism. She curtseyed, folded her hands before her politely and said, "Good evening, sirs. I was wondering if I might request a dance?" She turned her masked countenance to john nelson, violet eyes wide with inquiry, and perhaps a smidge of natural self-effacement.

Clad in a violet evening gown and blossom-adorned mask in matching hue, Xiura politely handed her invitation to the masked person at the entrance to the museum, hurrying inside so that she could see all the decorations. Everything was quite lovely, from the snowflakes printed on the luxuriously heavy cardstock to the wintry decorations of the ballroom. She hoped to be able to dance, though she was without a date.

However! Dancing aside, business needed to come before pleasure.

As her first (and only) point of order, she sidled over to the bar where a couple of bartenders were steeping some tea. Under her sidelong supervision, they poured steaming black and green teas into porcelain cups. They were served piping-hot on matching saucers to a seated couple, who thanked the server and started sipping in between bits of conversation. Xiura nodded in approval, then turned around, only to be faced by another server.

"Oh!" she said, mildly startled after being so focused on the reception to her teas.

"May we help you, miss?" he said, gesturing to the teapots. "We have teas for your refreshment if you so desire."

Her identity was on the line if she were to linger too long around the teas. Which was quite the opposite of the purpose of a masquerade. "Oh, no, I'll try some, er, alcohol!" she eventually said, picking up a sparkling champagne glass from the tray he was holding, gathering up her skirts, and scurrying off briskly.

Catching her breath by a trio of Bulbasaur carrying hors d'oeuvres, she noticed a gathering of redheaded attendees. Perhaps her friend Aurelie Lefevre was among them! Unless, of course, she had dyed her hair to further the masked persona, but it wouldn't hurt to try. Xiura hadn't, hoping she would be recognized by a friend or two.

On her way weaving around the many pairs of attendees conversing with one another in hopes for a dance, she came upon a lone blonde woman (Elisabeth Fiorelli) in a striking champagne gold ensemble, accompanied by a Beautifly. From the roses in her hair to her floral perfume, she was dressed impeccably, and Xiura could not help but comment.

"I love your gown and mask!" she exclaimed, the mask affording the anonymity she realized she needed in order to compliment a perfect stranger. "The ballroom decor is beautiful, isn't it?" she said with the same tone of admiration, taking a sip from her glass, the Starlight Champagne, which tasted quite delicious with its fruity notes.

“Thank you, Seraphine,” Xiura said with sincerity before the sophisticated woman left in a swirl of perfumed fragrance and rustling, luxe fabric.

“And thank you as well,” she said to Rouge, returning his hug with equal excitement. “I hope you sell many more paintings tonight, if not all of them!”

Xiura smiled as the two returned to their rounds, hoping for the best for them.

Then, she looked up, taking one last look at the painting. She supposed although Hoenn was her new home, the heart still longed for the familiarity of old surroundings. Old and new were juxtaposed in other facets of her life, too: the taste of earthy teas mixed with milk, fruits, and florals in her boba cafe; her new Pokemon companions alongside those who grew up with her from childhood; and now this modern art, capturing the quintessence of Petalburg Woods, but inadvertently that of Ecruteak as well.

What was that particular saying the Kalosians were known for?

The surprise Sneasel attack was shocking, but Valerian and Nomi put up a valiant fight.

“I agree with resting for a bit,” Xiura said, still tuckered out from their escape from the swarms of Beedrill.

Returning to the topic of Nomi’s parents, Xiura said, “Maybe they could be still alive,” unwilling to dampen her hopes. “How are you going about looking for information? If there’s any way I could help, please let me know.” Xiura wasn’t too much of a research buff, but: “For example, if you were looking through library archives and needed another set of eyes, I could help out.”

Just then a Dedenne scurried across their path, squeaking and starting to bite at their packs. “Oh, no, please don’t do that,” Xiura said, but it did not relent in its assault. She threw a Pokeball to capture the creature, but primarily to save the integrity of their backpacks!

“Goodness, we’re running into quite a lot of Pokemon this trip. Are there any in particular that you hope to find and befriend one day?” Xiura said.

Incineroar growled in indignation, shaking his head before looking over at the wide-eyed Litten. "Please!" Xiura said, gesturing at Henri. Incineroar snuffled slightly in feigned distaste, but nodded slowly at the impressed-looking kitten Pokemon. "Thanks, Incineroar!" Before Incineroar could renege on his agreement, Xiura bustled over to where Aurelie was rummaging through the box of costumes, leaving him to follow after.

Xiura leaned over the box as Aurelie Lefevre sorted through its glittering contents. "Oh, those masks are very cute!" she exclaimed, playfully holding up a red mask with devilish horns to Incineroar's face.

"Aren't these the helmets worn by those Kantonese warriors...the, uh, samurai, I think? The swordsmen? Wouldn't that be perfect for a sword dance routine?"

At Aurelie's comment, Xiura took one of the helms from her, examining it closely. She turned the smooth metal helmet over in her hands, eyeing its ornamentation with keen interest. "Yes! These should be perfect," she exclaimed. "Here you go, Incineroar," she said, placing it on Incineroar's head. Dealing with his height was easier than normal because he was on paws and knees, pretending to be a quadrupedal Persian. And Incineroar, to his credit, endured all of this with minimal grumbling as the Litten looked on.

"Now, as for the dance routine," Xiura said, laying out some sheets of paper and markers, "I brought these so we can create the basic elements of the choreography and sort them out so they tell a story."

She said, "I think the first moves could be a sort of introduction to their relative characters in the story. The first Persian could enter and spin around so that their sword and ribbons could swirl around them, and then the second Persian could follow." She drew a rough sketch of two cats on opposite sides of the paper and drew a circular arrow to denote spinning above each figure. "And another could mimic slashing each other with the sword, while they leap at each other in the middle."

She handed a compact disc to Aurelie, saying, "I brought a CD with some traditional Ecruteak music. Would you put that in the music player, please? We can pick out a song together to fit the theme, or something to get a basic idea of what music we're looking for."

SURVEY #1

"What's on your bucket list? Why? If you died right now, would you regret anything?"
I'd like to travel more, even to places I've already been to. I'd like to visit Ecruteak again. It feels like I haven't visited in a long time.

"What's your favorite article of clothing or accessory, or what do you wear the most often?"
I enjoy wearing light dresses. They're perfect for the Lilycove weather.

"If the Ultra Beasts invade Hoenn again, what would you do, or which Ultra Beast is your favorite and why?"
Oh, dear. I'd certainly volunteer to help protect Hoenn, and ask my Pokemon to help.

"How would you deal with the loss of a loved one, whether a family member or a Pokemon?"
I'd be very sad, but there's a saying that goes, "Time heals all wounds." I would grieve certainly, and honor their memory by visiting their grave, or engaging in activities that remind me of them. Hopefully, the pain of their passing would ease over time.

"What one hobby or hobbies do you have? Why is it/are they important to you?"
I love to explore different places and shops to find inspiration for new recipes for my cafe. It's fun, productive, and engages the creative mind!

Qualities like integrity and passion for a person's line of work or hobby stand out to me.

A garden, with plenty of colors and scents to draw inspiration from. I also like the grocery store. I think grocery shopping when not in a rush can be peaceful and calming.

I think perhaps a grass type, because I enjoy nature. Probably also because of all the fruits and floral infusions I enjoy adding to boba recipes!

I don't really become angry very often. When one starts to become upset, it is important to center oneself and not become upset.

Oh, I love floral scents like jasmine and lavender. I like all the different scents associated with different creative flavors of tea. My mother runs a traditional teahouse in Ecruteak, so I'm often reminded of her when there's green tea brewing.

"Why do you like, love or hate Pokemon? Why do you own Pokemon?"
I love Pokemon for their kindness and loyalty. They make so many people's lives better with their companionship and help.

I enjoy daydreaming about what kind of boba tea to create next. I think the power of imagination is quite useful and fun, because people can explore new possibilities for themselves and turn them into reality.

With a screech, the Froslass threw a blast of ice at Sableye. A wall of shimmering, prismatic white flew up, courtesy of the dark-type Pokemon's Detect move put in place just seconds earlier. The ice shattered and dispersed against the wall, blocked from reaching Sableye and Xiura.

Acting fast, Xiura chose to abandon the peaceful approach; they were fully on the defensive now after a hostile attack from the ghostly Froslass, and who knew how many there were in the house?

"Jin, use Shadow Ball!" Xiura said, ducking down behind the counter and looking around for any other aggressive Pokemon. Her Sableye cackled in agreement, conjuring up a ball of darkness and hurling it at the Froslass. The Froslass dodged and cast another dagger of ice, which Xiura now recognized as an Ice Shard attack.

"Dodge and try not to get hurt! Shadow Ball, again! Let's get to the living room!" Compared to the kitchen, the living room was less cramped and had more cover to hide behind to avoid getting hit by the ice attacks.

Xiura and Sableye escaped from the kitchen under the cover of Sableye's Shadow Ball, but not before seeing the Froslass melt through the wall to avoid the blow. As they entered the living room again, the Froslass was there, waiting for them with an Icy Wind. Xiura threw up an arm to shield her face, gritting her teeth against the stinging shards of ice that struck her arm. Her Sableye was blasted by the attack as well, but stood steadfast between Froslass and Xiura, absorbing the brunt of the hurt.

It was all or nothing. She couldn't let this ghost Pokemon flee. "Jin, use Mean Look!" Froslass froze in place, unable to shift through the wall again. It tried to move away, but could not escape the glinting terror of Sableye's jeweled glare.

"Zen Headbutt!" Xiura commanded at last. With a final cackle of glee, Sableye rushed towards the Froslass. With a scream suddenly cut short, the Froslass fainted, ice melting around it.

The ice along the floor started to melt as well. "It looks like this part of the house is clear, then," Xiura said after listening for movement and hearing none.

"Let's join Zev," she suggested to her companion, just as an eerie shadow moved swiftly up the stairwell.

Xiura raised a hand to cover her mouth in shock, saying to Seraphine, "I... do not mean to impose if this artwork was meant to go to another patron." She still looked wistfully at the artwork, saying, "I was born in Ecruteak, and sometimes I wish I could go back and see it, especially in the spring. The cherry blossoms would bloom practically everywhere."

"If no one has offered yet, I would love to purchase this painting. It would fit perfectly in the cafe." She could see it now, centered on the wall to the left of the counter, near--but not too near--the front-facing window. It would be a perfect juxtaposition between the lively, more rustic seaside city streets of Lilycove, and the traditional beauty of Petalburg, so much like Ecruteak in a way that ached.

Xiura shook her head, trying to clear the mistiness from her eyes. She smiled at the two of them, adding, "To stay true to the origin of the piece, I'd love to hear more of the inspiration behind this particular scene when you have the time. But I know the party is still ongoing, and you have many other patrons and friends to meet."

Xiura's expression transitioned from concern to sombreness as Nomi conveyed the reason for her parents' absence during their youth in Ecruteak City. Xiura had heard of the war in Kanto; their deployment to Kanto had surely been a death sentence if they had not returned to see their daughter ever again. "I never knew, Nomi. I'm sorry for your loss..." she trailed off. She didn't know what else to say. If there had been an iota of their having survived after all this time... It surely wasn't possible.

Then a giant yellow Beedrill appeared, cutting off her thoughts. It buzzed angrily as it approached the tree, and the four of them by proxy. Were they in its territory? More violent buzzing seemed to be approaching as well. Clefairy trilled uncertainly. "It looks like this one is angry, and might have some companions -- maybe we should go!" Just then, the Beedrill dove at Clefairy, who countered with another Moonblast. Xiura threw a Pokeball at the Beedrill, grabbing Nomi's forearm and coaxing her along. "Let's get out of here!"
