[break][break] Ollie winced at the slight rebuke. Whether intentional or not, it was a strike against him and a reminder that the party had not gone spectacularly well. At least on his end. As far as public relations went, it was an outstanding success.

emerald eyes widen under winter twilight. the shouts of merry cheer echo off behind them as the dj switches tracks, but all ollie can see is the furious gleam of PENELOPE LIVY's eyes as she tears him limb from limb.

[break][break] "i apologized for that!" he said, his own voice heated as the tenor of his voice rose to match hers. whether or not it was true, he was already on a burning path to destruction.

[break][break] "penny, you were always the one that was important to me. you were my girlfriend."

[break][break] "how many times do you need to hear it?"

[break][break] agony twisted in his gut as all those memories from their torrid past was brought to the surface, a forceful inferno of fire that she had dragged him into. that she would always drag him into, as long as they were intertwined.

[break][break] 'you deserve better,' Eva Morales had said.

[break][break] but what she didn't - what so many people didn't know - that ollie was a willing participant of that fire. he wasn't a man who doused her flames — he was the one who brought it to life.

[break][break] "Huh. Maybe it's bugged." Or maybe they just needed some secret code to unlock it. "We should take this back anyway. Maybe Illie or Eva can figure it out." If there were anyone who could, it would certainly be the two League scientists. Surely. Right?

[break][break] After lam logan responds to the flyer and explains that it looks like some of the ultra beasts that had been documented, that's when the light bulb clicked.

[break][break] Startled, Ollie stared wide-eyed at the Ranger before him. Or... the not Ranger, he guessed. She was resigning.

[break][break] He wanted to argue, wanted to find some words that would keep her with the family, but immediately realized there was no point to it. After all, he and Neffatari Nzingha were acquaintances at best — if even that. And her reasons were not really ones that could be refuted; it was the same worries and concerns that he'd heard many times before, whether from wren rourke or Noel Parker or anyone else.

[break][break] It was something that, even sometimes, was echoed in himself.

[break][break] "Well," he clears his throat. "You came to the right place."

[break][break] He flashed a half-smile right back, disappointment and regret clear in his expression. Maybe he should've reached out to her more. Maybe he could've changed things.

[break][break] Ollie walked behind his desk and reached for the pile of paperwork that was currently taking space in the nearby wooden chair, gesturing her to sit with an empty hand.

[break][break] "Sorry the office's such a mess. Everything with the holiday party is getting sent to my office, so it's kinda hectic." He gave a forced laugh, still feeling a bit awkward.

[break][break] Turning around, Ollie brushed his hands together and sat on the corner of his desk.

[break][break] "Okay. Well, I can't say I'm not disappointed. It'll be sad to see you go, Nenet."

[break][break] His words were genuine, brows pinched together with concern.

[break][break] "I wish I could say something to change your mind but - " His lips curved into a sheepish smile. "At least, we were glad to have you. I know you'll do great things at the Observatory."

[break][break] "I gotta ask you some questions first. Just normal stuff, you know?" He turned behind him, shuffling through the paperwork splayed on his desk, before he pulled out a single sheet of paper. "Aha! Here we go."

[break][break] the head ranger breaks into the trainer's room, his pikachu sprinting across the floor and to the edge of the boy's bed. thanks to freya morningstar and her dragons, many had been able to receive timely aid in oldale after the events of the silent icelands. as head ranger, ollie made it his duty to go visit them too, even though he had his own injuries to recover from.

never in a million years did ollie ever think he'd be on this podium.

[break][break] don't get him wrong — it wasn't like he was a terrible battler. in fact, in some ways, he was better than most. like most kids, he'd spent a lot of time in kanto's circuits. training, battling, doing his best.

[break][break] but rangering had taken up so much more of his life - was so much more important to him - that he'd never ever thought about the circuit. he'd told Elise Calcifet as much once when she'd asked.

[break][break] and yet, he found himself here anyway, standing atop the podium right next to Josh Devlin and CIAN MAHER. it was almost ironic. it made him smile crookedly at his two friends as they beamed under the pressure of camera lights.

[break][break] "we did great!" he laughs, as cian gets all choked up in his sentiment. "yeah, we should definitely - " ollie is about to agree with the blond, posing for a selfie, when there is a sudden CRACK. it takes a moment for the head ranger to realize that it's THUNDER and lightning that strikes lilycove city.

[break][break] he holds the gym leader back by the shoulder, reaching into his pokebelt at the same time to release his pokemon.

[break][break] two flashes of light. his togekiss and pidgeot appear, the latter immediately MEGA EVOLVING before it's massive wings cover the crowd in shadow.

"protect the civilians!"

[break] overhead, the forces of SAFEGUARD and PROTECT meld together, forming an immense barrier that shields the crowd, working in tandem with cian's raboot that attempted to intervene bravely in the clashing of the gods above.

[break][break] when it all dies down, the enthusiasm and cheer from their win is gone, replaced by the seriousness of the matter at hand. ollie joins CIAN MAHER in checking on the civilians, leaping off the podium and leaving his brief moment of stardom behind.

[break][break] gratefully, honestly. ollie much preferred playing this role.
