[break][break]beneath the pale light of her xurkitree's light, she can see june's wounded expression. she anticipates her lashing out, braces for it, but the response she gets is subdued. a forced, muttered agreement that annalise supposes is meant to defuse the situation.[break][break]the ranger captain nods, a barely perceptible dip of her head, and returns her attention to the power plant ahead of them. june goes in first, not waiting for her to slip in behind her. it doesn't matter, the thick cables of her xurkitree stop the door from closing as it crouches low to enter the structure. its movements are alien and unsettling as it fills the space. [break][break] annalise enters last, narrowing her eyes to analyze the large room. between her xurkitree and june's flashlight, she can make out an unmoving shape near the back corner of the room. " she visibly hesitates. from where she's standing, she can see the golem's eyes(?) start to blink. it looks purposeful, but carries no understandable meaning. [break][break]a ghost of a smile appears on her face as she descends the short steps to be on the same level as the gym leader and his team. her galarian rapidash's pokeball rolls idly between her fingers before she releases the fairy-type beside her. hands smooth across the unicorn's back, then she vaults up with a psychic-aided hop.[break][break]"can you catch me up to speed on dynamax?" her rapidash scrapes its hoof against the asphalt, interested in some weeds sprouting through a crack. "i saw it used at VCT, but i'm not really familiar with it."

through the devolving chaos, it's the slip of june sleigh 's arm through her fingers that jars her from her concentration. she draws a sharp breath as the other woman storms past her, snapping a hand out to stop her and closing her fingers around smoke-strangled nothingness. [break][break]"wait!"[break][break]she moves without thinking, following june across scorched ground. in the corner of her eye, she sees her ceruledge get caught up in an earth power, metal crunching as the ground rises upward to entomb the ghost-type. [break][break]she feels a whisper of concern for her pokemon, one that is quickly drowned out by the screaming panic as Shred 's centiskorch burns up. she raises an arm to shelter her face from the intense heat, stopping short as the conflict separates her from june sleigh . [break][break]the deliverywoman's image shimmers in the hot air as she runs up to the bandaged man. annalise can't tell if she landed a blow or not, she can only see the rocket draw his fist back and strike her, roaring a command to get out of the way. [break][break]"leave her alone!" [break][break]the scream pulls rough from her throat as she rushes to close the distance, echoing the sentiment that got june into this predicament in the first place. her ceruledge feeds off her trainer's anger and melts into shadow, trying to phantom force into howard slayte 's claydol. [break][break]and, meanwhile, annalise falls prey to her first impulse: to try and hit shred back. it's not the first time she's scrapped with a rocket — the knife she had wrestled from mint frost sings for blood in the sheath hidden beneath her jacket, but her hands suffice for now.

annalise raises her eyebrows, surprised to hear that june sleigh has an auto-mechanics degree. it sounds hands-on and technical, a perfect entryway into a lot of jobs — but she holds her tongue. if money is tight for june, she probably exhausted all her degree-related options already. [break][break]her defensiveness catches her off guard. their relationship is mired with misunderstandings. annalise doesn't divulge enough. june fills the gaps and runs with it. her brows lower, knitting together in confusion. [break][break]"it was just a question," she says, giving a voice to the first thought that pops into her mind. "i was just curious about whether it was a passion for you or not."[break][break]her xurkitree stops once more, plunging copper wiring into the earth beneath them. electrical impulses pass up through its legs, its torso, to its spiky, unseeing head.
