the cavern grows quiet after the last moonblast, only kept from silence by the ragged, huffing breaths from the roaring moon. her altaria glows as her mega evolution fades, returning her to an unassuming form, but she still watches keenly as her trainer approaches the other dragon, measuring its body language. [break][break]freya morningstar 's voice cuts through the quiet. annalise doesn't quite trust the beast before her enough to turn away from it, but she nods in acknowledgement from where she stands. [break][break]as freya and her goodra approach, she takes a step aside to make room for lyra to work. her eyes finally drift toward the councilwoman, hearing kiabil and assuming its some misheard word.[break][break]"yeah, they are." her face remains tight with stress as she returns her attention to the roaring moon. "i thought regular salamence were tough to work with, but these pokemon seem like something else entirely." [break][break]she takes a breath. "it's okay to be a little biased. especially for such a good pokemon."[break][break]as ever blackwell continues to talk, her gaze sweeps the room, imagining the space a corviknight would fill up. she winces as the picture appears clearly in her mind, full of disorder between the lack of maneuverability and the chaos of the infestation. [break][break]"yeaaah," she agrees, drawing out the word to show the misfortune of the situation. "your house would be a disaster zone if you had used him."[break][break] the pair of rangers watch her rookidee peck the offending bugs, but annalise keeps an ear to the trainee as he explains the situation. her eyes drift toward the venonat as he points, then back to the bird once more. [break][break]"yeah, bug pokemon like to swarm. it just stinks when they decide to do it in your house instead of in the wilderness."[break][break]she looks to ever, her smile small and reassuring. [break][break]"but don't worry! once we deal with the bugs inside, we'll spritz your house with a deterrent so no one else thinks about trying to get in."

Caleb Harcourt steps into her path, blocking her way forward, but she refuses to be cowed by another rocket. she tilts her head to look up at him, all of her once-concealed hate for him now burning on the pyre of her gaze. [break][break]she remains guarded as he speaks, thorny even as he reveals that he saved Greyson Connors . his anger may be a sword, but hers functions better as a shield. something to hide behind, something to lash out from the safety of. [break][break]for a moment, as he says greyson is worth giving a damn about, her anger almost reveals itself for what it truly is — something much smaller, draped in an oversized coat of injustice. [break][break] but then he keeps talking. and talking.[break][break]"yes." she answers before his question has time to settle, laughing with incredulous derision. "i haven't confined you. starved you. tortured you." [break][break]her voice lowers dangerously. "why do you have so many?" she asks, chiming a surprised laugh at the contents of his backpack. the gimmighoul coins jingle in her jacket pocket as she stretches an arm out to take his offering. her hand stills within the bag as a tree groans nearby, low and eerie and coupled with the snapping of wood. her head turns, a gasp caught in her throat. [break][break]regirock is lumbering towards them with no consideration to the foliage it mows down with each step. it doesn't attack, doesn't acknowledge them — it just stomps down the path like it has somewhere to be. [break][break]"we should move," she warns, pulling her hand out of his backpack to place it urgently on MATIAS SILPH 's forearm.

june sleigh pulls her toward the stairs and she feels her stomach drop as flat ground drops down into a step. she stumbles but manages to keep her footing as they quickly make their way to the first floor. as they descend, the cables infesting the power plant begin to slither across the walls and floors, drawn away toward the ultra beast on the second floor. [break][break]"i think it is — " she flinches as something heavy strikes the floor upstairs, causing dust to rain down from the shuddering ceiling above them. "maybe it's the reason why the lightning rod isn't powering up the plant anymore." [break][break]the building rumbles as the xurkitree starts to make its way down the stairwell on all fours, blasting past its opposition. annalise retreats further into the control room, reaching for her tera orb and whistling for her ceruledge to return to them.[break][break] a black portal bubbles beneath the ground and her pokemon phantom forces into the xurkitree's path. crystals blister across the ghost-type's dented armor as it terastalizes and cuts through the oncoming ultra beast with a superheated bitter blade.[break][break]each blow siphons the xurkitree's life force. it slows, but doesn't stop its pursuit. annalise takes a page from june sleigh 's book and throws a pokeball at it, ending the assault. [break][break]the power plant spits out more dust, unsettled without the stabilizing support of the xurkitree's many cables. annalise reaches for june. "we should get your flygon and get out of here."

thread summary: post-tsdt, annalise goes ghost for a couple weeks, then texts Greyson Connors to come over. he shows up, she breaks up with him, they argue over it.

why is it important?: this thread is literally the It Girl of annalise's narrative development. she and greyson have been dating for a long time, he rescued her from prison, and he's overall a grounding + positive influence in her life. however, as anna tells him, she's getting worse, not better. she's been struggling with a lost sense of self and trauma and is beginning to tunnel-vision on giving purpose to her pain. in a sense, she feels like she's sparing greyson a lot of heartache later by breaking up with him now.

the breakup serves to further isolate her from people who genuinely care about her and open her up to people who might not have her best interests at heart (like miss illeana reyes ). plus, now that she feels like she doesn't have to worry about hurting greyson, she can take more risks and be more aggressive toward rocket. 🙂

all in all, i like that their relationship doesn't tie up neatly. call me toxic but i think its whimsical that he went through all the effort of saving her just to lose her in the end to the very thing he rescued her from. it's messy and unfair and human.

i really appreciate snubis for writing this with me. i think this plot takes a lot of trust between writers, so he's my pookie fr for indulging me in this thread. i hope we can explore their new relationship in future threads :blush:

annalise follows after june sleigh , her ceruledge taking up the rear. she stares at the back of the other woman's head, unconvinced, as she dreams up a secret weapon on the second floor. this place has been long abandoned (and by who? she doesn't know), so she doubted they would find anything important.[break][break]june's question urges her the rest of the way up the stairs. beneath the fluorescent light, a xurkitree slouches in the middle of the room. its cables are ingrained in the walls, the floors, greedily drinking up the power supply. the light overhead flickers. [break][break]"i ... don't know, but i've fought it before."[break][break]the ultra beast lifts its head, lighting up with a luminescent flash of blinding light. annalise lifts an arm to shield herself against its brilliance and feels her ceruledge shoulder its way to the front of the group. [break][break]the metal paneling along the wall groans as it tears a cabled arm free and swings a power whip at the group.
