every time she closes her eyes, she's back there. it's the reason she startles as she awakens and sees ollie morales next to her bed. in those first, half-conscious moments when nightmares and reality blur together, her mind goes to team rocket first. she hears her own panicked gasp in her ears as she rouses, but it doesn't feel like it's coming from her. [break][break]
her brows furrow. emotions flicker across her face as consciousness returns to her, but none of them are pleasant or reminiscent of her. [break][break]
" — ollie," is all she can manage to draw out of a sleep-hoarse throat. beside her bed, a machine blinks as it reads her racing heartbeat.

"how — how long have you been here?"

she tries to adjust herself, but breathless pain puts her back into her place.

MATIAS SILPH invites himself to sit at her bedside. she doesn't object, but she doesn't welcome him, either. he's close — she could reach out and touch him and confirm he's really there if she wanted to — but the distance between them has only grown in her months of confinement. [break][break]

the details of her rescue are fuzzy, but she remembers Greyson Connors mentioning him. and she remembers, more sharply, how she felt when he said it. [break][break]
"so you were there."

it comes out as quiet confirmation rather than a question, like she's slotting a puzzle piece into place.

it feels like she's traded one prison cell for another. [break][break]
the knock on the door startles her out of her thoughts. her head turns, jaw brushing against the pillow, to watch MATIAS SILPH enter the room. her stomach lurches with surprise, but even that feels strangely hollow beside the enormity of her exhaustion.

"where's greyson?"

her face screws up with pain as she starts to sit up, reaching across herself to gently cradle her bandaged side with a gentle hand. it's only when she finally props herself up against the pillow that she really looks at matias. her reaction is underwhelming — just a sullen stare at his injuries and a raspy:

the bunker shudders with an earthquake. as Greyson Connors pulls back — with some resistance from her — he's met with tear-streaked confusion.[break][break]
"matias?"[break][break]
his name is mumbled out, voice hoarse and watery. it doesn't make sense to her, but greyson's voice pulls her back to the present as her mind wanders back to memories of MATIAS SILPH calling her cruel, of old regrets of leaving him and that cave.
[break][break]
"okay," she says, pawing at her eyes with the side of her hand as fresh tears blur her vision. she doesn't have much faith left in anything, but she invests what little she has into him as he scoops her up into his arms. she loops her own around his neck, holding her forearm with her hand with weak fingers. [break][break]it's been so long since she's felt safe that she doesn't recognize it anymore, but the foreign feeling is there, now, as he promises nothing will touch her again. [break][break]
the gunshot startles her, but the bullet takes the wind out of her like a punch in the ribs. her blood feels pleasantly warm against her cold skin as it leaches through the fabric of her shirt.
[break][break]
Felix Gallagher joins them with a leap from the stairwell. her eyes find her captor's. even after everything, he's still a rocket in the end. she feels so stupid for ever thinking he was any different. [break][break]
her breathing quickens, but she can't escape the feeling that she's drowning.

her dreams never got this far, she thinks, as she notices autumn in Greyson Connors 's shadow. the bars along the wall of her cell groan as an invisible force pulls and twists them apart. annalise watches from her cot, her body tensing up at the ugly sound freedom makes.

it doesn't feel real, but she's never been able to see his face so clearly in her sleep. his quivering smile, his eyes glittering in the low light with emotions that can't afford to be spent yet.
[break][break]
"you're not." [break][break]
her voice breaks. she presses her lips together thinly. [break][break]
"you're right on time."
[break][break]
she throws her blanket off and swings her legs off the edge of the cot so she can put her feet on the floor. her hand reaches for the edge of the bed, guiding herself unsteadily to a stand. she limps over to him, tracing a twisted bar with the edge of her fingertips.
[break][break]
she glances down the length of hall she's never been able to see, then a glance back at the cell from her captor's perspective. she feels numb to it, as if her mind believes it's safer to not comprehend the sight at all.
[break][break]
an unconscious pull brings her closer to Greyson Connors . she looks up at him and feels a heartache as sharp as any blow delivered to her. he's wholly familiar to her, yet time has made them strangers, too.
[break][break]
annalise collapses against him, arms around his waist and fingers curled in the fabric of his shirt, and startles at how solid he is. it's not a dream. he's really here. he saved her.

her breath hitches, then she starts to sob.

the mist makes her pliant. obedient. fingers grab her chin to lift her face, but she doesn't pull away. some small, rational part of her mind screams for her to pull away as the dark-haired woman leans in, but she doesn't. she doesn't fight the persuasion of Elisabeth Fiorelli 's lips as they brush against her own —

she falls into it.

pink mist fills her mouth as she unconsciously leans into it. she's too hungry, too desperate to resist the trap set out for her. nothing feels as good as this, as good as her. in a stretch of time that feels both long and terribly short, nothing else matters. even her desire to be free shrinks down to something insignificant and easily discarded. [break][break]
and then elisabeth pulls away, taking it all with her.

annalise sucks in a breath through her teeth, drawing in the residual mist in her mouth, and lunges at the bars. the cell door rattles against her weight as she reaches one hand out to grab at the woman beyond the threshold.

she's afraid of feeling what she felt before elisabeth lured her in.

her outstretched hand trembles as he approaches. it draws on nebulous memories of feeding freya morningstar 's salamence for the first time — the fear of not knowing if she can trust the beast in front of her to not take her whole hand with it, juxtaposed with the tentative trust that must be afforded lest they all starve.

she holds his gaze as he bends down, then lower to watch his teeth come together around granola.

he's really eating it, she thinks, eyes lingering on his mouth as he chews. her fingers move on their own, wrapper crinkling as she shakily rips the rest of the bar free. [break][break]
her concentration breaks, sick with hunger, as she shoves the bar into her mouth and reaches for the other. it's the best meal she's had in too long. it takes her mind to another place, to razor-sharp memories of throwing one of these in her bag before heading to work. [break][break]
the wrapper in her hand turns blurry with tears.
