silence is provocative, but the dark-haired woman remains on her side of the bars. the promise to speak enough for them both is met with no response, just the guarded stare of an animal cornered. she doesn't trust her, just like she didn't trust any of the other rockets who have approached her cell since she's been brought here. [break][break]whether they come kind or cruel, she knows they have no qualms about reducing their sympathies down to fists and pokemon attacks when no information surfaces.[break][break]
annalise's heart beats harder against her chest as Elisabeth Fiorelli moves closer to her cell, hands grasping the only thing putting distance between them. for the first time since she arrived, annalise moves. it's a subtle press of her shoulders further against the back wall, screaming her desire to push herself into the concrete digging into her back and disappear from this situation entirely.

the wall doesn't give. it never does. she's trapped here with this woman and an offer that makes her feel more afraid than curious. she blinks, tries to clear a dry throat.

"i can't help you," she rasps at last. there's no bite to her rejection, just the weary admission that she's too tired, too trapped, to entertain any sweetly-spoken trades.

annalise looks rough, despondent, when Elisabeth Fiorelli stops in front of her cell. she sits with her back against the far wall, knees tucked up against her chest with bruised arms looped around them protectively. she doesn't raise her head at the sound of her voice, but her fingers curl white-knuckled in anticipation of scenarios that bloom like starbursts across her anxiety-laden mind.[break][break]
"A long way from home aren't we, hm?"

she's always hated the way team rocket members seem to talk like they're movie antagonists. somewhere deep in her stomach, she feels the nostalgic burn of it as she looks up through overgrown bangs at the woman standing over her, gaze hollow as it traces the pleased expression on her face.

freya morningstar moves towards her, but it's her dragons that draw a cursory look from annalise. the way they flatten themselves closer to the ground, intentions veiled as their trainer comes to a halt in front of her. the truth, the confession that she's been satisfied by blood spilt, the command to take off her rose-tinted lenses — it deepens the disillusionment in her eyes. the promise is perfunctory and far too yielding to resemble annalise finding understanding with her former colleague. MATIAS SILPH is, through and through, the man who rescued her from near death at the hand of Felix Gallagher . some pedestals are too tall to tear down, especially by someone sinking into a mire of her own well-meaning admissions.

"thank you for telling me, in any case." [break][break]
she really wants to say things like: matias is my friend, he saved my life, he's not like that, but there's no compromise to be drawn between them and the dragons surrounding her wither the idea of cyclical arguing. she takes a step back, creating distance, angling to leave. [break][break]
"what do you, like ... plan to do now?"

annalise doesn't expect to learn much with her lips so close to the league's ear, but curiosity prompts the question.

annalise watches him take out his phone with rapt attention, eyes narrowing slightly against the light that illuminates his disguised features. [break][break]mostly disguised, she realizes, risking a glance at the exposed parts of his face while his attention is elsewhere. green eyes, half-lidded as he looks down — the image embeds in her mind like glass shards in skin, something to be drawn out later when the memory of it finds the surface again.

he turns his phone's screen off, extinguishing the harsh light with a click of a button. he tries to extinguish her hopes, too, and the thought of her friends forgetting about her — as unbelievable as it should sound — makes her circumstances feel that much more bleak.

it's only been a few days, she reminds herself, steeling herself with the knowledge he gave her.

there's no subtlety in her movements. she tries to tuck herself closer to the back wall as his curiosity lures him closer to the bars, the fabric of her shirt scraping against concrete as she shifts closer to one side of the cell. whatever courage she has left that affords her to respond to his questions holds no ground against the way his hand comes up and presses against the metal between them. "because my friends were out there."

and she'd left them all on uncertain terms. her throat feels tighter as she lingers on the thought of Greyson Connors . there's no reprieve — either she worries about her loved ones or slows down enough to acknowledge where her captivity inevitably leads to.

she's come to know it well enough in the past few months. she'd come into her head ranger position naively thinking she could push her ideas like freya morningstar says she had as councilwoman, but she hadn't expected the channels she would have to go through. or that the channels were all full of more emergent issues. the lecture should settle with her — but it doesn't.[break][break]
she's not corruptible. and MATIAS SILPH is reckless and stupid, but she'd like to think that the league would do something if he truly went too far that day. the gulf between her experience and freya's is impassible.[break][break]

starved of information, annalise consumes whatever she can, no matter the brevity of it. she gives the slightest incline of her head, an acknowledgement of his answer that is more rote than meant for him. she starts to piece together a timeline in her mind, but his insistence scatters her thoughts like a drop in still water. it doesn't feel safe to answer his probing questions, but she steps into the waiting mouth of the steel trap anyways. at least she'll get to know what happened to the league that night before it snaps shut.
