Despite its strength, the second Miraidon was no match for two Avatars and two Pokémon. They crushed it swiftly, collapsing to the ground in a heap of burnt and bloody flesh. [break][break]

Zev's armor retreated back beneath his skin. Though he was unharmed, the fight had been fierce. Recalling his Blacephalon into its Pokéball, he took a moment to regain his breath and calm the wild beating of his heart from all the adrenaline. [break][break]

The victorious Miraidon beckoned, lowering itself to the ground so he and Jayden could climb onto its back. [break][break]

"It will take us through the cave," Zev explained to the other man. "Though the simulation should end soon, too."

Howard's attempts at humor did not elicit even the slightest twitch in Zev's face. Instead, the Devourer leveled an unamused stare at the admin as he moved to continue up the staircase. [break][break]

Then the voice again—though, as before, it was less of a voice and more of a sensation that reverberated through Zev's entire being. Emotions flashed through him, and he caught the hint of displeasure before it disappeared into a flood of incomprehensibility. [break][break]

"What did you expect? This isn't real," he scolded Howard. Then he paused as he watched the staircase fade into nothing. "It exists so we can plan accordingly, for when we encounter the real thing." [break][break]

Zev cocked his head at Howard, suddenly curious. When he next spoke, his voice contained no hint of the thoughts behind his unflinching gaze. [break][break]

"If you did, do you think you could kill it?" [break][break]

Zev stared at the machine, but the combination of immense hunger and exhaustion fogged his brain. He couldn't put two and two together to understand the implications of Oscar's words. In fact, the scientist had run off to who-knows-where before Zev could even formulate a response. [break][break]

Heaving a sigh, he turned to the table. It looked downright menacing, but though he doubted the procedure's results, he did not fear the machinery. [break][break]

And anyway, he was just so tired. A small nap wouldn't hurt. [break][break]

So Zev glanced at his Gengar and gave one instruction before lying down: "Kill Oscar if anything goes wrong." [break][break]

Smoke wiggled his ears and nodded, then moved to help his master onto the table.

In the midst of battle, ancient Galar transformed into a familiar cavern. Terastal crystals covered every inch of its surface, glittering in resplendent colors, both tantalizing and dangerous. Zev had been in the middle of battle alongside his Blacephalon, but upon seeing the change in scenery, he paused. [break][break]

The strange, purple Pokémon was there, waiting for him and Jayden. [break][break]

"This again," Zev said, a hint of surprise entering his voice. He relaxed his stance and walked toward the robotic creature. [break][break]

"I've seen this before in the RKS machine," he added, for Jayden's benefit. "A Miraidon. There should be another one coming." [break][break]

As if summoned, a roar resounded through the cavern, heralding the arrival of a second Paradox Pokémon. It bristled with obvious hostility for a moment before charging. Zev's Blacephalon jumped in its path, attempting to slow it down with FIRE BLAST. [break][break]

Zev was familiar with the signs of fear. How the skin of the face paled as blood drained out of it. Nervous tics and the trembling of hands. Widened eyes and shallow breaths. Darting glances and avoidant gazes. [break][break]

He stared at Howard until the subtle signs vanished beneath the force of the admin's self-control. Only then did Zev turn to contemplate their new surroundings. [break][break]

"Gods don't need to impress mortals with grandeur." [break][break]

The comment came unbidden, as if Zev's mouth had merely translated an outside thought. If he seemed fazed by it, he didn't show it; instead, he swept his gaze over the staircase and started to climb. At least for the first few steps. [break][break]

And then, easing gravity's hold on himself, he pushed off with one foot and soared up fifty steps. [break][break]

Pausing, he looked back down at Howard. The threads of gravity pulling upon the man burned bright in Zev's vision. "You next." [break][break]

Zev nodded, accepting Theo's admission. If he could appreciate the underboss for one thing, it was his pragmatism. "That's fine with me." [break][break]

Cillian, Jayden, and the other Beasts would have to suffice. In an ideal situation, Zev did not need them; he had already laid waste to an entire city and civilization. But each time he pushed his abilities to their limit since then, the consequences were the same: exhaustion and a need for recovery. [break][break]

Like how Necrozma had gone inert after a time. [break][break]

So contingency plans were necessary, even if Zev didn't like the thought of needing them. [break][break]

Discussion of the recent battle did remind him of the strange object that his associates had scooped up as they were retreating. [break][break]

As the men and their Pokémon passed under a crystalline arch, he asked Theo, "What about the item we retrieved from the battlefield? Do we know anything about it yet?"

Zev's head snapped in the direction of the gunshots. He saw a flash of bright blood as Bryan charged the security guards and smashed their heads together. Brain matter splattered everywhere. [break][break]

Coolly, Zev followed Bryan up the stairs, his skin itching as black crystal emerged from beneath his skin to cover him completely. On the second floor, he stepped over a vine snaking its way across the floor. A whistle ushered his Iron Crown ahead, a BULLDOZE smashing life-giving equipment. [break][break]

Screams of terror filled the ward. The angry cries of Pokémon followed as several rushed at Bryan with their attacks. He took the blows head-on, uncaring for his own well-being. [break][break]

For a split second, Zev wondered if Bryan had ever fallen in battle since becoming Xerneas' Avatar. Zev had no plans to see that curiosity sated, however; such recklessness risked the certainty of their success. [break][break]

So he leaped over a hospital bed tipped onto its side and shot tendrils of crystal at the hostile Pokémon. The razor-sharp ends cut into armor and flesh alike, spraying blood across the floor. The ones still alive hesitated, their attention split between the two superhumans. [break][break]

"Can you keep going?" Zev asked Bryan, eyeing the other man's countless wounds.

Zev peered closer at the tracks, frowning. Sure enough, another set had intermingled with the first. "It doesn't look like they were walking together. One is fresher than the other. But that could mean anything." [break][break]

From what he could tell, there hadn't been a scuffle between the two Pokémon. That meant they either coexisted naturally or there were enough resources in the Giant Chasm to satisfy them both. [break][break]

Then again, basic knowledge of Pokémon behaviors were all but useless when it came to the paradoxes born from Interdream Mist and Tera crystals. [break][break]

A cry from one of the Genesect rang out ahead of the men, followed quickly by sounds of battle. Zev snapped his head in their direction, tensing with the adrenaline flooding his veins. "Found them." [break][break]

He broke off into a run toward the noise. [break][break]

After witnessing Zev's extraordinary powers, Neffatari Nzingha draws a sample of his blood to inspect under a microscope. What she sees fascinates her, and she discusses her theories with him—namely, that his DNA has been altered so tremendously that he's no longer human. Zev takes the revelation well, though more questions arise. Nenet promises that they'll figure him out together.
why is it important?:
Shiv and I recently discussed the extent of Zev's changed biology and I am very happy to use this thread as an avenue to explore that piece of character lore.

I'm thrilled that Nenet, as a character, is perfectly positioned to discover this information about Zev. Not only is a branch of biology her primary focus, but she specializes in astrobiology, which is even more relevant for the kind of phenomenon that surround Zev. But moreover, she's his wife; her positive, supportive reactions to revelations about him only serve to reinforce their unique relationship.

As for Zev himself, the idea that he's not actually human is more of a blessing and relief than something troubling. He's never felt human, so to receive confirmation that he isn't one anymore reinforces his biased perceptions. I enjoy contrasting this with the very human emotions and selfish desires he still feels. I feel like the dichotomy makes Zev a more interesting, nuanced, and at times contradictory character.

But soon the Pokémon battle was in full swing despite Rhys' protests. Walsh summoned his Hypno to fight alongside his Nidoking to even the odds. Rough cries and the sounds of their scuffle filled the chamber. [break][break]

Zev tilted his head, as if weighing the options. "We could just leave. As soon as we approach the doors, the simulation will believe we have lost and it will progress forward." [break][break]

Turning, he gestured to the main doors of the building. [break][break]

"Regardless of what we choose, the end result is the same." Namely, that Fuschia City burned to the ground. "I'll show you what I mean." [break][break]

He began walking toward the exit. His Infernape continued to fight, countering the strikes from Walsh's Pokémon to the best of his ability. However, it soon became clear that the Rocket Boss' team was more experienced. Better trained. [break][break]

Zev ignored the speech he'd heard numerous times before. Instead, he pushed open the door to reveal the conquered city. [break][break]

The doors swung open and blazing firelight flooded into the darkened chamber. It did not bring warmth and safety however, but only more terror. Zev stood beside Howard, hands in his pockets, to gaze over the conquered city. [break][break]

Howard's questions drew Zev's attention from the sight. He glanced back at the pile of viscera and flesh that had once been a Pokémon. Though a simulation, it looked and smelled very real. [break][break]

"That's right." That the admin guessed so quickly both surprised and amused Zev. He kept the emotion from his face, however, as he started down the steps into the city. [break][break]

Their surroundings began to fray at the edges. A nearby building buckled from internal damage; a portion of its roof slid down and sideways toward Zev. Glancing up, he froze it in place with a thought, suspending it in the air above him, even as the scenario melted away. [break][break]

Turning, he stared straight at Howard with cold blue eyes. Crystals crawled up his neck and face. "And yes, I can." [break][break]

Zev looked up as his Genesect flew into view, its sleek form emerging from the shadows beneath a jutting Tera crystal. The war machine uttered an electronic cry when it neared, one he recognized as a warning. [break][break]

"Enemies nearby. Probably just around the bend of this path," he told the woman accompanying him, none other than Elisabeth Fiorelli. [break][break]

Reports of high-profile League agents spotted in the vast subterranean network had prompted the two to patrol its steep slopes and cliffsides. The Tera crystals provided natural cover and hiding places—perfect for ambushing Team Rocket's researchers as they took geological surveys of the area. [break][break]

Zev was confident he and Elisabeth could prevent any such attempts at sabotage. Their practice battles in simulations against the likes of MATIAS SILPH proved they were an effective team, no matter the tenuous nature of their peace. [break][break]

Perhaps Zev should have been surprised when, as he and Elisabeth rounded the bend, he spotted none other than The Volatile on a lower section of the precarious path. It only made sense for the League's own powerful assets to take stock of Area Zero. [break][break]

But Matias was not alone. Zev paused when he caught sight of the man standing beside Groudon's Avatar. The hazy memory of a wide grin beneath a golden crown flashed through his mind. [break][break]
