Wow, either that had been a really powerful Sing or Isaac was really tired. Maybe both. Either way, Julia was glad he was unharmed... even if it meant she was in an awkward position now. She giggled at how silly she sounded with her words muffled by Isaac's body. She hoped he woke up soon, though; he was kind of heavy!

[break][break]Fortunately, his eyes started to flutter open, and he began to shift. Julia loosened her grip so he could get up, but instead, he rolled over to her side, trapping one of her arms beneath him. Well, at least she could breathe now! Then he started to mumble something about Julia being in his dreams. Relief at finding a friendly face and the absurdity of the situation hit Julia all at once, and she began to laugh again, the sound echoing off the cavern walls. Maybe that was what finally woke Isaac up.

[break][break]"Hey, Isaac," Julia said between giggles, pulling herself into a sitting position. If she was embarrassed at all, her laughter was doing a good job of masking it. "Technically, I'm the one who caught you."

[break][break]She managed to calm down with one of those long sighs that came after a good laughter session. Dang, she'd really needed that.

[break][break]"You okay? I wouldn't have had Lazuli Sing if I'd known it was you."

[break][break]Lazuli cooed softly again.

Once again, Julia was grateful for Chester's stamina. While Julia breathed deep to gather her energy back up, Chester was totally calm, his middle head even reaching over to nuzzle his trainer encouragingly. That, combined with Jett's offer to do the boring paperwork for them, really helped perk her up.

[break][break]"Really? That'd be great, thanks!"

[break][break]His next words, though, sent a chill down her spine. A cave-in... She subconsciously shifted some weight off her prosthetic leg, hoping the color wasn't draining from her face or something dramatic like that. Of all the things, it just had to be a cave-in...

[break][break]This is why you became a Ranger, Julia, she reminded herself. Go help those poor Zubat.

[break][break]"Got it," she said, straightening up and looking a lot more serious than her usual bubbly self. "Thanks for letting me know. Be careful on the way back."

[break][break]She took the chocolate cigarette, smile starting to return, and watched as Jett headed onward, leaving Julia alone. Alone in the weirdest caves she'd ever dealt with. She took a breath through her nose and patted her cheeks. Nope, she wasn't gonna let this place freak her out! She had a job to do, and by golly, she was gonna do it!

[break][break]"Let's go, Chester," she said, determined.

[break][break]His left head, of course, looked worried for Julia, but the middle and right picked up on her conviction and squawked their approval. Together, they made their way deeper in.

"No problem!" Julia said, smiling right back.

[break][break]When Spot met Makoto's gaze, he tilted his head, expression mostly neutral but suspicion sparking in his eyes. Unlike Makoto, he wasn't well versed in hiding his emotions, mostly because he was so used to reading them off other people that masking them almost seemed pointless. When Makoto spoke again, saying they'd never owned a Lucario before, Spot couldn't glean whether that was the truth or not. It was almost like this rookie's aura was muffled, making it hard to read. Some people were so good at masking their emotions and intentions that even Spot struggled to discern what their auras meant, but this was something entirely different, and Spot couldn't figure out what it was.

[break][break]"Funny-looking how?" Julia asked, apparently oblivious to Spot's confusion. She wasn't sure if Makoto meant something like a Probopass, which did look kind of funny with their big noses and "nose hair," or something stranger that would give Spot bad vibes.

[break][break]Regardless, when they arrived at the tent, it was bustling with activity, people ducking in and out to give reports and receive orders. Julia thought the people in charge were impressive for being able to manage all this chaos. "This is it! Just make sure you—look out!"

[break][break]Someone came barrelling out of the tent in a panic, and Julia instinctively reached over to grab Makoto and pull them out of the way.

Yggy's little nip made Julia laugh again. "I'm glad to see you guys are doing good, too!"

[break][break]She looked surprised to see that El had been around since this whole thing had started, but that look quickly gave way to a proud smile. "That's awesome! You're already shaping up to be a great Ranger."

[break][break]Maybe she should have been concerned about someone as inexperienced as El on the battlefield, but that thought was hardly even a flicker in her mind. She was just glad to see so many good people from the League stepping in to help.

[break][break]"I had to get shipped in from Fortree, so I got here a bit later than you, I guess. It's been crazy from the get-go, though. I'm glad we've got a chance to rest and recover." In fact, it looked like El and their Pokémon were all ready to go again! "I've still gotta get my team checked out, but we should be ready to head out pretty soon, too. What are you planning to do next?"

[break][break]One by one, Joy checked on Julia's other Pokémon, sometimes prompting the Ranger to use a Potion on a certain spot. Pokémon like Spot, Chester, and Snaily, who got up close and personal with the enemy (and, in Snaily's case, often took hits for her teammates), needed more attention than the rest, but all of them got care and praise for their hard work. Emboldened by their trainer's encouragement, even the timid Sparkie and melancholic Snaily looked ready for more.

A voice shouted out, and Julia's eyes widened.

[break][break]"Isaac?!"

[break][break]She ran out from behind her hiding place to see him standing there, already yawning hugely. "Lazuli, stop!" she commanded. Lazuli immediately went silent, but it was too late: the song had already taken root in Isaac's consciousness, lulling him to sleep. Without another word, he began to fall.

[break][break]Julia's legs moved before her head did, carrying her toward her collapsing friend. She dived forward and managed to wrap her arms around him, but the dead weight sent her falling to the cave floor, too. Unlike Isaac, though, she was able to brace herself, and though her shoulder was definitely going to smart after that, it was better than either of them hitting their head on solid rock.

[break][break]It did, however, leave Julia in a bit of an awkward position. Pink crawled into her cheeks, but she did her best to ignore it. Making sure Isaac was okay was way more important than her being embarrassed!

[break][break]"Isaac, wake up," she said, shaking him gently the best she could from this angle. Lazuli had to awkwardly waddle forward to approach them, but she leaned her head down and softly nudged him, cooing apologetically.

"Sure, thanks!" Julia said, taking the offered candy. She stuck the end in her mouth, planning to let it hang there for a while, but it was chocolate, so that plan probably wouldn't last too long. Julia liked to think she had good self-control with what she ate—she had to stay in shape, after all—but when the chocolate was already melting in her mouth, that was a lot harder.

[break][break]She giggled and pinched the stick of chocolate between her index and middle finger. If she realized how silly she looked, she did not care. "Hopefully being a nuisance to Rocket," she said with a playful smile. A thought flickered through her mind, threatening the good mood: What if Isaac Merlo was out there?

[break][break]If he is, he's not doing anything really bad, she thought. There's no way he would, Rocket or not.

[break][break]"It's been safe at the base camps." She didn't even let the words "so far" fully form in her head. "Some people come back tired and worn down, their Pokémon fainted, but the medics are doing a really good job of healing them up." Her smile, which had grown bittersweet, sparkled with genuine joy again. "But others come back triumphant, cheering and congratulating each other on a job well done, whether it was a battle with Rocket or an Ultra Beast or just a cargo delivery like this. It makes me happy to see them happy, you know?"

[break][break]Sure, they usually had to turn right back around for another mission, but Julia figured that as long as they kept their spirits high, they'd make it.

Oh, so that was it! Julia was surprised that that was had Spot so worked up, especially with all these other people around, but she shrugged that off in favor of helping this rookie Ranger.

[break][break]"They're probably in the command tent," Julia said. "It's over this way!"

[break][break]Despite the rookie's saying they'd be fine with just being pointed in the right direction, Julia started leading the way to the command tent. She looked over at Spot, only to find him looking tensely in Makoto's direction.

[break][break]"What's wrong, Spot? Are all these people getting to you? Here, I can put you back in your Ball."

[break][break]Before she could grab it, though, Spot put a firm paw on her wrist and growled low in that "something is up" way. Confused, Julia looked around, but she couldn't find anything out of the ordinary, and it wasn't like Spot could just tell her what he was sensing.

[break][break]"Hey, did you see anything strange on your way in?" Julia asked Makoto. "Spot's acting kind of weird, and I dunno what's bugging him."

Seeing El's team lounging around immediately made Julia want to let out all of her Pokémon at once, but she managed to stop herself. Some of the larger members like Lazuli would probably be a bit too much for the tent, so for now, she settled with sending out Momo and Spot. Bibidi's psychic greeting was like a little tickle in Julia's mind that, combined with Yggy's excited circles around her legs, was enough to make her giggle.

[break][break]"It's good to see you guys, too," she said, reaching down to try to scratch the excited Turtwig. "We've been in a few fights, but it's nothing we can't handle. Right, Sparkie?"

[break][break]At first, Sparkie was too caught up in Joy's checkup to take much notice of the people and Pokémon around her (and she was usually the type to keep to herself and her teammates, anyway), but when Julia called her name, she twitched her ears, looked up, and squeaked with a reassuring smile. The Alolan Raichu seemed surprised to see El in here, but she offered them a closed-eyed smile of greeting.

[break][break]"I figured it'd be a good idea to get everyone checked on and rested up before we headed out again." Already, Julia could feel her spirits rising, carrying away her fatigue. "How long have you guys been out here?"

Yeah, those sunglasses definitely added to the tough-guy look he had going. His lack of immediate response left Julia awkwardly sitting there with her hand still extended, her smile beginning to feel awkward. Did she have the wrong guy? His scowl seemed to soften for a moment as he reached into his pocket for... was that a pack of cigarettes? Julia's smile finally fell a bit as she internally debated on whether to tell him that probably wasn't a good idea, but the item that popped out of the box didn't look like a cigarette. It looked more like...

[break][break]"Is that chocolate?" she asked, momentarily forgetting that this was supposed to be an introduction. This guy was definitely interesting so far!

[break][break]Luckily, he immediately confirmed that he was, indeed, Jett. That got the smile to pop back. "Nice to meet you, too! Let's get going!" Chester's middle and right heads squawked, and the Dodrio, carrying carefully balanced saddlebags, started down the path.

[break][break]"Pretty much, yeah," she replied to Jett's question. "I've been doing a lot of work at one of the base camps until now. What about you?"

Julia thought she heard something from where the pebble had come from, but she couldn't quite figure out what. Some kind of scuffle, maybe? She peeked out from her hiding place, only to duck right back behind it when she saw a shadow coming down the slope. Yep, someone was definitely coming.

[break][break]Julia took a deep, hopefully silent breath through her nose. She hated feeling this scared of a person. That wasn't supposed to be her; she was supposed to greet everyone with a cheerful smile and use her boundless energy and optimism to make everyone's day brighter, not cower in a corner like this. Stupid war. Stupid mean Rocket. Her brows pinched together. There was no way she was gonna go down like this.

[break][break]She tossed out Lazuli's Poké Ball and shouted, "Lazuli, Sing!" The Lapras didn't even question her trainer's orders and sang a soothing tune to put the intruder to sleep.

As much as Julia tried to keep up her usual cheerful, energetic attitude, today was starting to wear on even her. She wiped some sweat from her brow as she ducked into the medical tent, resisting the urge to sigh in relief at being somewhere so safe. There was still more to the day, and Julia had a feeling she'd need to keep her spirits high if she wanted to make it. Good thing she was so good at that!

[break][break]A happy squeak greeted her as she entered, and a Blissey wearing a nurse's hat walked up to her. "Hey, Joy," Julia said, scratching her behind the curls on one side of her head. "Been keeping everyone healthy?" Joy squeaked again with a nod. It was clear she'd been hard at work, but she was more than happy to be helping like this. Seeing that made it even easier for Julia to ignore her own fatigue.

[break][break]Joy was one of Julia's Pokémon, but she wasn't currently part of the active team. Instead, she was offering her services to anyone in need here at the League base just outside Dewford. The medical tent suited her much better than the battlefield, Julia thought.

[break][break]Her Blissey wasn't the only familiar face here, though. "El? Hey! What are—?" No, that was a silly question. "How are you holding up?" They were still pretty new to Ranger work, after all, so being out on the battlefield like this must have been rough for them.

[break][break]She sent out Sparkie, and Joy immediately got to work looking the Alolan Raichu over. Her injuries were minor, fortunately, something Julia could take care of with some Potions.

Man, was Julia glad to be out of the Ultra Deep Sea. Sure, she was still in a warzone and probably would be for a while yet, but she was still going to enjoy being able to breathe in the fresh sea breeze and bask in the sunshine after being stuck in an alien cave. Man, that place was weird. But Julia wasn't going to think about it if she didn't have to; she'd rather focus on where she was now.

[break][break]She knew it'd only be a matter of time before her next mission, so she was taking a breather and checking on her Pokémon. Spot sat at her side, his gaze mostly focused on the ocean. Julia knew it could be stressful for him to be around this many people at once, especially with emotions so heightened, so she was trying to make her examination quick.

[break][break]"Looking good, buddy!" she said proudly. "You're not hurting anywhere, right?"

[break][break]Spot looked at his trainer and shook his head. His eyes were halfway back to the sea when they suddenly snapped back toward the crowd. With a quiet "Hm?", Julia followed his gaze but didn't see anything out of the ordinary, just League members of all kinds going about their business and preparing for their missions. "Something wrong?" she asked.

[break][break]Spot squinted, seeming just as unsure as Julia. After a few seconds of this, he stood up, waved for Julia to follow him, and walked toward the crowd. Something was definitely up, but Julia had no idea what. She followed him toward someone in a low-ranking Ranger uniform. She looked at him again to see if she could discern what he was thinking, but his expression was still hard to read. No, it was more like even he didn't know what the deal was. Maybe asking the person of interest would shed some light on this situation.

[break][break]"Uh, hi there!" Julia's greeting, while chipper, was uncharacteristically uncertain. "Do you need help with something?"

There was definitely a voice coming from up the sloping tunnel, but it was too distant to identify. If this had been any other situation, Julia would have cheerfully met whoever it was and rolled with the punches from there. But this wasn't any other situation; this was a warzone. Her conversation with Isaac Merlo about the nature of war felt more relevant than ever now. She thought her experience in Littleroot had prepared her, but this was a whole different ball game. With her and her team in such bad shape, she needed to be careful.

[break][break]A pebble came careening down the slope, echoing off the walls as it bounced over hitches and bumps in the cavern floor. Yeah, whoever it was was definitely close. She quickly recalled Lazuli into her Ball and looked around. Ah-ha, she could hide behind that jutting crystalline formation! Then, once she had a better idea of who was coming, she could go from there. If it was a friend, she could announce her presence and offer strength in numbers. If it was a foe... well, she had just healed Lazuli. Maybe she could Sing them to sleep to give her time to get away.

Julia liked doing cargo delivery. She liked helping out the League by delivering supplies instead of getting into the fray with Rocket. She wasn't totally opposed to fighting, especially if it was to protect someone or something, but she was a Ranger first and foremost, not a soldier. She'd volunteered for this to protect the region from whatever Rocket was planning with the Seal Stones, not to fight. So when she got the order to accompany one Jett Roan on a supply run, she was more than happy to comply.

[break][break]She rode atop her trusty Dodrio, Chester, carrying a pack of her own stuffed with crucial supplies. She was more grateful than ever for Chester's three hearts and six lungs that gave him incredible stamina. She spotted a man who matched Jett's description astride a Cyclizar, carrying a pack of his own.

[break][break]"Hey, are you Jett?" Julia asked. She extended a hand for him to shake. "I'm Ranger Julia Davis, but you can just call me Julia."

[break][break]It was only then that she really took in his face with its small eyes and scowl. She blinked, her smile faltering for a fleeting moment before she turned it back up with the full force of her friendliness. This guy looked pretty intimidating, but they were on the same side, so there was no reason to be scared of him. Besides, it was rude to judge a book by its cover!
