Their sylveon wades into shallows to paw out the floating safari ball. Unfazed by the water that seeps into her fur, she returns it to her trainer, the ball held gently between her jaws. Fern rewards her with an affectionate scratch between her ears.Then they resume the hunt—avoiding a petilil that watches them from nearby.

Whatever it is lurking under the surface, Fern does not ask. He doesn’t offer it, and they don’t try to pry into it. There is a lingering sense of rejection that has stayed with them. He went on in that dream space, for ages past the time Fern spent there. But the betrayal they felt is just as sharp.
When he chose not to believe them. He paid that price, and they are not trying to punish Jayden for that. But they are wary of being so open, so opinionated, for the little good it did them before.[break][break]
“Ah, right.” They feel foolish for asking, suddenly. [break][break]
“That is good,” this time when they speak, it’s earnest. Though they have not shied away from him since that day in the Cave of Origin, there is a part of them that fears the way his body has become a vessel that breeds hatred so easily. The lick of frostburn spurred by the predator that wanders with him, icy claws sunk into Jayden.[break][break]
And apart from that, they know how it feels–to have that sort of power and not think you’re able to control it. Though wielding the lightning that crackles through them, erratic and at whim, proved much easier to manage than the emotion that consumes their partner.[break][break]
Their bitterness eases off– at least for the time being. Fern’s shoulders sag as they continue to side eye his injuries. “I do wish you would not overdo it,” they say, because if he gets to nettle them, why should they not do the same?[break][break]
But Fern is not battering themself to bits, either.[break][break]
“Especially because we do not have the benefit of Xerneas’ channeling as an option.” The skittering crawl of something sneaking along their ankle causes Fern to stop abruptly.[break][break]
Bending down, they brush away a joltik hidden under the cuff of their pant leg, the shocks it gives off no more than a ticklish sensation to someone immune to that electricity.

They are not a fisherman. They are not very good at the art. But the sight of the pretty alolomola floating to the surface reminds them of their trip with THEO BECKETT ages and ages ago. Maybe they can try their hand at it again, though they’re short a fishing pole. Instead, Danu hits the fishy with the beam of a MOONBLAST. Fern just has to make sure their throw is accurate, lest the empty safari ball sink to the bottom of the pond.

He does not believe them. He doesn’t believe it, though they say it and are find. Since when have they been incapable of standing on their own? Have they not always been capable of exactly that?[break][break]
Fern has always prided themself their independence and resourcefulness. They are besotted and drawn to attention, yes, but they are not dependent on anyone but themself to survive.[break][break]
So why does he fret over them like a tutting mother swanna?[break][break]
It is rich, then, that he echoes their own incredulity when they turn the question back on him. Typically, they might tease him or make a joke. But this time there is a bitter taste in their mouth when he says of course, like he can be just fine and they cannot.[break][break]
Fern doesn’t look at him, but at the leaping creature that slinks along the path with them. One that they admittedly care little for. “Okay, so if you can answer so easily, why wouldn’t I be okay?” They wish Tapu Koko were there, but the island spirit is high above. Trailing from the air above the chasm where it does not feel closed in.[break][break]
They can relate.[break][break]
“That’s-“ not what I meant, they don’t finish aloud. Their gaze flutters down to his arm, scanning over the swathe of bandages. Crisp and white like the downy tufts of his hair has often taken to being as of late.
They mean his mind, of course. His heart, and the frantic emotion he doesn’t have to state for them to sense. The anxious edge to his actions and words, and the fact that he has been finding every opportunity to be alongside them with uncanny accuracy.[break][break]
Normally, they are the clingy one. For someone so work driven, it stands out when it is Jayden who is reluctant to part from their side.[break][break]
The realization is one that itches under their skin, unreachable. And it also provokes a pressure that begs them to pull out from under the press.[break][break]
“That’s very good to hear, darling,” they say instead, though, voice dropping to a murmur. There is still the barest hint of frustration in their sigh, . Their eyes sharpen at the addition. “Theo’s methods?”

Tapu Koko floats alongside Fern as they wait at the research station they’ve been tasked with overseeing. To their delight, the grunt assigned to their care is punctual. (Not that Fern is usually punctual themself.)[break][break]
They nod with swift tilt of their head at his respectful greeting.[break][break]
Despite their established position and rank, they still find it odd to be deferred to in leadership situations without another superior present. Maybe it’s just the side effect from working from the shadows until they began their rise within Rocket.[break][break]
Before they were ever in Rocket at all.[break][break]
Regardless, they enjoy being out in the open now. And they certainly don’t mind barking orders from time to time.[break][break]
Right now, though, Fern seeks to understand the grunt under their supervision. At least for now. “Fairchild,” they reply lightly, smile appraising, though not unfriendly. “What is it that you typically do within Rocket?”

Fern tutted irritably for their mistake. How could they mix up a woobat and applin?? How terribly silly. A flash of gold caught their eye and their gaze lit upon the little rookidee. Though not a dragon, it reminded them of home. Of Galar. With a click of their tongue, the sylveon leapt forward again, pulling the bird from the air with the gust of a shimmering FAIRY WIND.

The sight of a flash of fluttering green gets them trigger happy— signaling their sylveon forward, they set her loose on their target, fully expecting to retrieve a shiny lil apple. The burst of SWIFT stars knocks the small pokemon prone, and it’s soon captured within a ball. But when Danu retrieves it for them, Fern opens it to find…a woobat? It must have been napping in the brush. They sigh— back to square one.

Jayden had been a little…excessive as of late. Sure, in the past they had gotten themself hurt, but they were long past that day in the deep sea. They knew how to work with their deafened ear now. They were fine.[break][break]
So why was it that Jayden was beside himself now? No, Fern knew the answer to that– knew that it had everything to do with what had happened in that strange dreamscape caused by Father Winter. “I’m fine,” they insist, unable to stop the grate in their voice, though Fern forces themself to lighten their tone.[break][break]
“Honestly, duck, a few rocks are not going to do me in.”[break][break]
They normally love the attention lavished on them by the other admin. But the frantic, fervent edge to it now left them feeling uncomfortably smothered. They are just fine, they are stronger now than they ever have been, thanks to Tapu Koko.[break][break]
“I am just as okay as I was two minutes ago,” Fern says with a sigh, blue eyes darting to the side to fix their partner with a pointed look. “Are you okay?”

They meet THEO BECKETT’s greeting with a casual nod. “Underboss Beckett.” Fern’s voice is as light and conversational as ever.[break][break]
But they do not miss the formality in Theo’s terseness. Which is a barrier Fern had thought they’d largely passed. Or managed to.[break][break]
Unfortunate.[break][break]
Puffing out a sigh, their head rolls to the side in thought. “Only as much as the published reports offer, I suppose. Why do you ask?” They leave out their unanticipated trip to jayden cross’s dreamworld at the behest of Father Winter. Unwilling to discuss what happened there. How they were expelled from that world and the sharp sting of rejection they still feel panging in their chest.[break][break]

“Huh? Yeah, of course I’m good.” Fern frowns as Mint asks the question, taking the offered hand as they hop down from the twisted root. “Why wouldn’t I be?” Honestly, why do people keep asking them this? jayden cross had been fretful too. It is not as though they’d been injured recently, or given any reason to indicate they weren’t okay.[break][break]
In fact… they felt great as of late– fully immersed in the vitality that wielding lightning provides.[break][break]
“No, I didn’t,” they agree, tone a bit more terse than intended, and they immediately chide themself for it. Mint is just being a good friend, nothing else. Any anxiety Mint felt was lost on Fern–ignorant as they were to the experience that the Beast had endured. All they knew was how they’d been pulled into Jayden’s dreams, rather than any of their own.[break][break]
And that had been almost more than Fern could chew. Maybe that accounted for their clipped words. But they try to shake it off regardless, in favor of companionable time spent working with a dear friend.

Idly, they wonder if this is what the league does with its unattached legendaries. If they are dragged into the tedium of training and assistance without any power or choice, or if these pokemon choose to assist.[break][break]
“Do you think it would be liberating, if we spirited it away?” they ask aloud, gaze tilting from the Tapu Koko below toward their own companion.[break][break]
Probably not.[break][break]
And even if it were the case, it was likely that their patron would not be pleased with the situation–fickle and attention-seeking as it is. Two of them in one prolonged space? That would be asking for a continued lightning storm over Sootopolis.[break][break]
Tapu Koko does not, in fact, share. Even with Fern, and they’re on its good sign.[break][break]
But then again, the nature of their connection began with curiosity, much like this and the way it watches its counterpart now. So maybe it is Fern who does not wish to share.[break][break]
Definitely not.[break][break]
The Tapu Koko, finally seeming to detect them, unleashes another peal of THUNDER, and the admin lets out another hoot of entertainment. “Have at it then, Pidge.” They click their tongue, and their dragapult drops itself along with Fern into a PHANTOM FORCE portal so that it might spit them out closer to the ground below.[break][break]
Tapu Koko, meanwhile, plummets from the clouds–hurtling not for the other island spirit, but toward CIAN MAHER with electricity crackling of its shielded arms, which had snapped together to form its birdlike mask.[break][break]
To what end? Likely to see what the other Tapu Koko might do.

Paperwork was never a preferred or enjoyed part of Fern’s daily agenda.[break][break]
Which was why, more often than not, they griped and whined on end until jayden cross took over the bulk of it for them– just for them to preen and fawn over him in turn. And then they could generally do as they pleased for the remainder of the day.[break][break]
They were no good at tedious drudgery unless it was expressly of the fabricated variety.[break][break]
So why, WHY was Jayden–their sweet, beloved, cooperative darling nowhere to be found–leaving them to be roped into not just Howard’s demand for assistance, but a demand that pertained to work that belonged to neither of them??[break][break]
Sullenly, they hoped that wherever BARNABY FINCH was, his tea was dreadfully cold.[break][break]
At least they didn’t mind Howard’s company. Fern’s nose wrinkled in distaste as they leafed their way through what felt like a huge stack of papers, but was actually a tiny portion next to the other admin’s. They snorted quietly, eyes darting over to glance at Howard. [break][break]
“Hell if I know. Having more fun than we are, undoubtedly.” A pause, then a grumble– “I’ve half a mind to sign off on these using a false name.”
