Mint’s laughter draws out their own. “How very dramatic of it!” they chime back as they play along. “How Shakespearean, even! Do you think it will bellow a soliloquy for us?” They continue to scout from above, hoping it will breach the surface and give itself away beyond the ominous rumbling from the deep.[break][break]
They get their wish– the beast breaks through in a crash of ocean water. The deep vibration of its cry rumbles through Fern– even in the air. “Woah there!” Their dragapult banks away from the swing of Kyogre’s tail– the thrill eliciting a wild giggle from the admin.[break][break]
Cecilia’s maw opens as the green, photosynthetic light of SOLAR BEAM begins to swell in her throat. A measure of biding time until someone more electric shows up. But Fern’s eyes pinpoint on Mint on the bank as the legendary launches an attack. The first of a probable many.[break][break]
“I did! Watch out down there, will ya? It’s fast for a big boy!”

They listen as Mint speaks and Jayden adds input. Tired eyes shift between the two of them–failing a bit to keep up beyond the idea strung together piecemeal in their mind. They have never been too scientifically minded, unfortunately.[break][break]
No, this is more of a…hunch, really. Of sorts. That gut feeling that there could be something useful with that shard. And the meteor.[break][break]
Fern and Jayden huddle around Mint, and suddenly they feel very conspiratorial in the gesture. Like they should be sharing secrets at a slumber party instead. They continue to lean affectionately against Mint, though–seafoam eyes trained on the snip of falling flower stems, even as they speak.[break][break]
What if this is hair-brained?[break][break]
Well, they are nothing if not confident. They have been wrong about worse, in the past.[break][break]
The admin’s glance flits up to Jayden’s violet eyes, then away. “If we can make an educated guess where that island was, or might be…maybe we can take the shard out there. Try to… set it off? If it’s connected to Meteno, maybe it’ll draw Kyurem or Hoopa out of whatever pocket dimension they’re hiding in?”[break][break]

The cold bites into the palms of their hands, fingers stiff with the frost that crawls up over their skin. And then their arms shift, sliding around him as he drops against their shoulder. Secure, fiercely protective.[break][break]
Quietly, they hush him, smoothing over his back with murmured words of comfort that mean nothing and everything.[break][break]
Even as uncertainty crawls through them, they do not waver. They do not know what will happen to him now in the coming days. But they will not sway from their place beside him.[break][break]
A breath of relief comes when warmth meets their cheek. And slowly they nod. Mischief briefly creeping into their smile. “Yes,” they agree, “of course we will. We’ll be unstoppable, you and I.”

[attr="class","text"] Of course he’s done an excellent job— Fern quite truthfully doesn’t expect anything less from the man standing in front of him. He has always been thorough, and now Fern can feel the heart behind it too.[break][break]
It makes their own flutter and pick up a quicker pace.[break][break]
“I love it they correct, smile growing wider by the second, “You’ve picked out the best piece. It’s perfect.” Their eyes remain fixed on the pendant, wondering at how he chose. How he managed to know what would mean the most.[break][break]
They let him take the box, electricity buzzing in their fingertips as they turn around to let him clasp the necklace and fasten it in place. Fern barely has the patience to let him complete the task before they’re spinning again to throw their arms around his neck.[break][break]
“I hardly needed the reminder,” they reply, a quiet laugh bubbling up their throat, “I’m always thinking of you.” They lean up and close the gap between their mouths. “But thank you, it means everything to me. All of this does. You do.”

Even with the learning curve and bouts of anxiety and uncertainty, Fern never once doubted him or his capability. With their comrades and the other rulers, they all begin to build something there in Ballonlea the longer time stretches on and they don’t find a way home.[break][break]
A comfortable afternoon stroll is a new staple in their days. A respite when they are able to steal the king away from his tasks. The warmth of the sun sits on their shoulders and Fern is at ease.[break][break]
Or at least they were. And then the subject of their aimless chatter shifts. Fern frowns, their glance moving toward Jayden. “The pantry?” they ask warily. They do not need to ask who because they already know. “What happened?”

“Yep!” they confirm brightly, arms stretching out to indicate big. “We don’t want it to be a sad, skinny tree, y’know?”[break][break]
The ornaments would totally overpower it then. And the last thing Fern wants is for an encumbered looking Christmas tree that droops in the middle of the living room.[break][break]
“I used to do this with Da every year,” they say fondly. Fondly—before they catch themself in the abrupt reminder of their father and the illusions in the Interdream mist. The pain and fear of it. They should be long over it by now— it was over a month ago.[break][break]
But all that blood lingers in their mind. Their dreams.[break][break]
Fern shakes the thought loose—refocusing on fluffy trees and the sharp scent of pine. And the fuzzy warm feelings that being here with Jayden brings.

A peel of THUNDER splits the sky near them.[break][break]

Though it is not aimed at them, and the high voltage does not bother Fern in the least, it nearly fries their dragapult. Which would result in an undesirable descent, wouldn’t it? Cecilia swerves, cutting swathes through the clouds over the head, leaving the admin with a thin layer of condensation that sinks into their clothing and dampens their hair.[break][break]

The appearance of the Tapu Koko provokes their own patron to dart forward in agitation— the muted orange and black of its own feathered fringe ruffling as its eyes narrow on the brighter island deity. “Patience is a virtue, you know,” Fern trills at it, a half hearted attempt to stay its eager behavior lest it give away their position prematurely.[break][break]

But that twin electricity is already crackling off of Tapu Koko, and they know that it will do as it pleases. As it always has and as they themself tend to do as well.[break][break]

It doesn’t completely expose their position, but another rumble of THUNDER hurtles toward the earth where the other Tapu Koko… plays? They are unsure of its behavior, curious as to why it deigns to mingle with humans it hasn’t truly claimed for its own.

Maybe if they’d remembered it all, they’d recall that they shared a Galar at one point. Years from now. But that dream has largely fogged over for Fern, most of it lost to the recesses of their subconscious—save for a few precious pieces. But even then it is not home.[break][break]
Not in the way the Galar they grew in is.[break][break]
They watch her curiously, head tilted as their sylveon eyes the apple across the ledge. Their attention deviates for a moment, then returns to her. “Formative years,” they remark quietly, and a part of them considers pressing further— if they hadn’t been distracted by the way the strange, not-exactly flapple knocks the sableye down several stories.[break][break]
How curious. They’ve not seen this form in real time.[break][break]
A click of their tongue sends their sylveon forward with the cry of her disarming voice— a sound that sends the hydrapple before it’s snared in a ball.[break][break]
Their blue eyes stare lifts back to their companion, and the swift buzz of a phone in their pocket once again pulls their attention away. “I’m afraid here is where I must leave you,” they murmur with a slight frown. It seems they are late for a meeting.[break][break]
“Until next time, Councilwoman.” Fern ducks away quickly then, without leaving much time for her to respond to the fact that they’d known her all along.

They have heard tell of an abundance of applin frequenting the safari zone as of late. Wishing to make use of the heightened population, they find their way there—if only to wander the trails for any semblance of the little creatures they have grown so fond of. Tapu Koko has not deigned them with its presence today—too bored by the concept of creature hunting to bother. But Fern finds themself quite alright with the calm. At least for today, as they amble along in the company of their sylveon.

Tapu Koko was on edge - not the Tapu Koko beholden to the league, of course. No, this Tapu Koko finds itself flitting about in agitation. Or perhaps it's buzzing with curiosity.[break][break]
Fern isn't quite positive of which.[break][break]
It wasn't the first time the idea of seeing what would happen if two Tapu Kokos were put together had crossed the Rocket admin's mind. But it is the first time they've chosen to descend on Ever Grande with the intent of doing so.[break][break]
They have to wonder if it will be like when it met Tapu Fini and Elisabeth Fiorelli. Or if it will be positively cataclysmic.[break][break]
The more erratic part of them hopes for the latter.[break][break]
"Don't get too jealous, pigeon," they tease their patron in a sing song as they sit astride their dragapult, high in the air above the city. Electricity buzzes off of Tapu Koko's feathered ruff. "The right moment should be soon."[break][break]
Blue eyes scan the world below. For now, they bide their time.

It was smart to evaluate intentions before answering. Not that Fern had ill-intent in seeking out this information - they were, in this case, attempting to do no more than sate curiosity. But they also lead a tendency toward tucking away pertinent information. Stored at the ready in their back pocket - handy for whenever it might prove useful.[break][break]
"Interesting," they replied simply. Not the real Necrozma. Interesting, indeed. Though they didn't attempt to ask further as the question shifted toward their own capabilities.[break][break]
"It does seem like, though," they added after a moment, "that when I think I've got one skill pinned down, another decides to act up." But perhaps that was the nature of being The Charlatan. Mercurial down to the electricity they wielded and how..[break][break]
A constant state of shifting between different facets.[break][break]
It wasn't long before trouble found them, unsurprisingly. The crawl of black crystal captured Fern's attention briefly before they looked toward the station. It seemed in the time that had passed, the place had been overrun.[break][break]
"Unfortunate," they muttered as electricity rose to the surface of their skin, static shocks sparking off them and causing strands of their hair to lift.[break][break]
"Shall I distract them?" they asked in a low whisper before their mouth clamped shut. But even then, the wiliness in their smile crept out to play.
