"Yes." Their voice came out squeaky and pathetic. If they had been up to their normal standards, Fern would've responded to her incredulity with their typical degree of brusqueness and flippancy. So, to Fern, it should've been fairly clear that he was panicking for real.[break][break]
He let out a little eep as Marza pulled him through the open door, Tapu Koko zipping in behind him before it could be shut out. "Must you?" he asked, eyeing her fist crumpled in his jacket collar.[break][break]
It was only once she let go of him that Fern chose to answer. He made a show of straightening his rumpled shirt before he threw himself down upon the musty couch with the fanfare of a swooning Victorian lady. "Oh, Marza," he lamented, "It was just terrible."[break][break]
He peeked out at her from under his arm. "We were on an expedition to the Megalopolan city and got chased by these dreadful creatures. Just awful. This pigeon...thing followed me and helped out. It just came along and now I have all this zappy...stuff. I suppose I've managed to accept its patronage."[break][break]
And frankly he didn't quite know how to feel about that.

The stretch of time to pick and prod at the kyurem quickly draws down to a close as the unbound hoopa takes its leave.[break][break]

There is a steadiness in hanging onto Jayden’s hand, though not for long.[break][break]

Zev Harcourt’s request to assist Elisabeth Fiorelli is met with an affirmative from Fern, “On it.” A pull of resistance comes from jayden cross, however, and they frown as he untangles their hands.[break][break]

They feel a bit wary to let him go, but their lips press in a thin line as they nod, and then murmur back a stern “Be careful,” that is no doubt swallowed up by the howl of the wind.[break][break]

Though they are not airborne, they follow Tapu Koko’s flitting form from below. It takes the initiative, darting away from the push against the hoopa to follow the tug of the bond between patron and recipient.[break][break]

Not that it needs much prodding to bother the great green dragon in the sky. A wily grin pulls across Fern’s face, and though, yes, Fiorelli has a handle on things, Tapu Koko seems keen to assist the other Tapu avatar.[break][break]

As it spins and buzzes around Eva Morales and rayquaza, tendrils of colored lighting fork down around it from the sky. NATURE’S MADNESS making the open sky far more narrowed.[break][break]

With their attention fixated on the fight directly above them, they miss jayden cross and how he comes to blows with Remiel Calcifet. But there are so many things going on around them, it is difficult to pinpoint between ryaquaza and the way kyurem is soon rended apart.[breaK][break]

It is not until calls for retreat begin to ring through the comms that Fern turns, beginning to look for signs of their fellow admin again, along with mint frost.

“I have no desire to spell things out,” they retort stubbornly, “but I know they are not good.”[break][break]
Fern hums dryly, clearly unamused with the theatrics. A tactic they are not unfamiliar with employing themselves. “I don’t know my place?” A scoff follows, disbelieving. “I fail to see how I am the one out of line when you are the one pushing certain directives that can only lead to trouble.”[break][break]
Meddling with avatar DNA? With a patron like Chien Pao? The ramifications are a disaster in the making.[break][break]
Their eyes remain narrowed as the man’s kecleon skin changes again, and Fern has to resist the urge to bark out a stubborn retort– a “I didn’t ask for your advice.” They remain silent, lips pressed together as a nerve in their jaw twitches.[break][break]
When he approaches, their breath snags in their throat. Through the heady thrum of their anger, fear flickers under the surface. They will not give him the pleasure of letting it show, though.[break][break]
Lips peel back in a silent snarl at the breath that murmurs poisonous words into their ear, and the weight of his hand on their shoulder sears through their jacket and shirt.[break][break]
Wrenching themself backward out of that grasp, their hand raises toward him in threat. The flare of electricity wraps itself around their hand but they do not clamp down on his arm.[break][break]
“Do you think me so foolish as to only find my identity in one person?” they hiss, “I am more than enough and I will not tolerate your attempts to take me out at the knees.”[break][break]
The recent fights with Jayden, though, are a flutter of doubt in their stomach, but Fern doesn’t allow it to dim their conviction. “He’ll come around, and he’ll see you for what you are.”[break][break]
And they would laugh.

They study him just as carefully. They won’t be fooled by him–not now, after they’ve chosen their proverbial hill to die on.[break][break]

“I think you know full well what he was hoping for from you, and that you have exploited for your own endgames.” They dance around his insinuations–keep it about what he is doing, rather than the claimed insufficiencies that he is suggesting Fern believes of Jayden.[break][break]

It is not about that. It is about what Dmitri is doing. “I am not a child,” they say steadily. Dismissive of the condescension that he speaks to them with.[break][break]

“Oh, but it isn’t treason,” they counter. “You’ve simply had your fill poisoning the water supply this whole time. Not everyone is so fooled by your conniving behavior.”[break][break]

He is the treasonous one. They are the one that is really looking out for their own. For Rocket.[break][break]

And that is no small thing for the likes of Fern Delaney, who has believed the safety of their own person to be pinnacle.[break][break]

Fern’s eyes narrow, “Are you threatening me? Who is also an admin of Rocket? Now who’s speaking of treasonous behavior?” Electricity collects in their hand, hidden behind the lip of the desk’s edge.

Fern doesn’t fall for the false ignorance. Of course they don’t, when they know how to pull the same sort of trick. Have used the same smiles and beguiling words.[break][break]

“You know you’re manipulating him. Don’t play coy.”[break][break]

Their words clipped, crackling like lightning that wants to build in the palms of their hands. Silently, they refuse the seat. Instead, Fern remains standing, posture taut as their arms fold tight and defensive across their chest.[break][break]

“No drink,” they shake their head, unsmiling, “we both know we’re past the point of pleasantry.” He will not charm them like he has so many others.[break][break]

Their eyes flit to the drink, and they resist the urge to knock it off the desk. Send the expensive liquor spilling out as the glass shatters. Even that is not enough to encapsulate their anger.[break][break]

But of course Dmitri remains placid. “Leave Jayden alone. Haven’t you done enough?” Simple as that.

Peace does not find them in the days and weeks that follow their first disagreement.[break][break]

More arguments rumble in its wake. The constant burgeoning of thunderheads and dark clouds swell above them. If not literally, then in spirit–the frantic buzz of electricity leaves them agitated and on edge the more jayden cross’s father’s influence wraps like thorny vines around the son’s mind.[break][break]

Even worse, his heart.[break][break]

Not even their typical, fond bickering with Tapu Koko can distract Fern from the restless frustration that grows rampant within them. An electrical storm waiting to lash out. And is not for lack of trying. Their patron draws them into petty disagreements, but there is no true malice behind these endeavors.[break][break]

It is as if Tapu Koko hopes that in ruffling Fern up, they will forget their emotional distress in favor of fickle, fleeting things.[break][break]

Its own unrest grows, in turn. And so, they fuel one another’s distrust. Not at one another–for once, they feel in tune with the island deity to a fuller extent. But rather toward the source of Fern’s disdain. The Charlatan’s target is accepted by the god who has grown fond of them.[break][break]

They circle Dmitri in the same way that he circles them. Like two prowling liepard, each waiting for the first, clawed strike. Their fury swells and billows when the memo goes out. They refuse participation, but they are not surprised when their partner agrees.[break][break]

It pains them but more arguments with jayden cross follow.[break][break]

Enough is enough, they decide. This spurs them toward confrontation–anger making them bold. There is no congeniality in their expression as they enter the tarnished office. A space once comfortable and inviting, no longer. Their eyes fix on the empty frame, lip curling in distaste as cold blue eyes lift back to the sharp, bloody red.[break][break]

“You have no right to do this to him,” they say, flatly ignoring the trite greeting that they do not believe is genuine in the least.

A soft smile is spared for jayden cross as their touch brings him back down to earth. Despite their wilder antics, they give him a silent nod at his thanks. “Of course, always.” They would never fail to back him up.[break][break]

Not if they had any say in doing so.[break][break]

There is little time to spare for sentimentalities, though, as the earth rumbles and splits wider. As paradox Pokémon begin to spill out onto the field in droves.[break][break]

But rather than zip off as they had before, eager to feed into their impulses, their hand remains tethered to the other admin’s. THEO BECKETT’s directive is clear in their earpiece.[break][break]

“Go for hoopa,” they tell Tapu Koko. The deity only looks at them for a moment, head tilting as if disappointed that they are not coming too. But after a moment, its speed carries it away.[break][break]

A volley of ELECTRO BALLS are hurled at the mischief maker, the one still spilling confusing lines of prophecy despite the glow of pink mist and its obvious efforts of looking for a way out.[break][break]

The deity has little issue zipping high over the chasm, and Fern watches on as Jayden pulls down the avalanche with greater force to begin icing it over.[break][break]

Electricity, meanwhile, crackles in the palm of Fern’s free hand. “How are you doing?” they manage to ask their partner, only interrupted by the way their arm slams out at an IRON CROWN that charged too close.[break][break]

Their palm connects with the teal, metallic exterior and the electricity in them flares out in a surging pulse that overflows the paradox Pokémon’s circuits. Its limbs lock up and stutter. The glow of its eyes flickering before they go out as it powers down.

It has been far too long since they were provided the chance to just be. It is something Fern has sorely missed, even though they know it cannot be helped. Still, it makes them wish that they could snatch up jayden cross and steal him away. To anywhere, so long as it is somewhere else.[break][break]
But no, they must sadly accept domestic outings for the time being. How sad - granted, Fern is pleased to have Jayden all to themself no matter the setting or situation.[break][break]
Though he's unaffected by the chill, it draws a bodily shiver from Fern and they are admittedly quite glad for the layers they piled on under their jacket. "Ready as ever, duck." they chime merrily.[break][break]
He is cold too, but that doesn't stop them from twining their arms together and leaning close as they begin the trek toward the tree farm.[break][break]
"We have to make sure we find an extra fluffy one," they declare with great certainty.

Of course, Fern knows it's to do with the cat. Chien Pao seen in the cave. They don't understand it, but know it's twisted something in their beloved's mind. Warping it and haunting him.[break][break]
Why else would he make such an unrecognizable face?[break][break]
But Fern, despite the anxiety and uncertainty and fear that churns inside of them, could never be frightened of him. Their hands don't tremble as they hold his face, thumbs gliding over the too-cold skin. A relentless shivering worms through them from the sudden temperature plummet, and their breath comes out in foggy puffs.[break][break]
But still, they hold on.[break][break]
"Come back to me," they murmur, again and again until familiar light returns to his eyes. Then, a careful smile. "There you are."[break][break]
They shake their head, one hand shifting to comb through his hair. "But it was not really him. We all...saw things." They do not elaborate on seeing his brother again.[break][break]
The pain the bright violent of his eyes cracks Fern in two, though, and they are at a loss. "It will fade, dove." They can't promise this, of course. "I will chase him away." Their voice a desperate, helpless coo.

That sort of thing is like a little comfort - the familiar scent making them feel closer to him when they weren't able to see each other due to work constraints. It pales in comparison to the real thing - this, his arms pulled tight and secure around them. But it could still draw a smile across their lips, to catch a whiff of that familiar scent.[break][break]
A momentary, warm distraction when they are otherwise preoccupied.[break][break]
"Mhm." they hum in agreement, lips pressing against his again in a way that feels soothing and cozy warm. Like coming home and draping yourself in a big, old quilt.[break][break]
They'd quite like to fall into distraction right then, as a sigh flutters from their mouth while his trails away to their neck. Their head tilts in invitation, only for their mumbles of pleasure to warn into a while when he untangles them.[break][break]
It's a pouting from Fer that doesn't last for long. "My favorite," they say brightly as the curried apple scent hits their nose again. But as soon as the box is opened, Fern falls silent.[break][break]
Eyes wide, their fingers reach to brush over the pendant. With no more than a murmured, reverent, "It's beautiful.."

It's all a silly matter, of course. Whether personal resources or Rocket's, there is no need for either. Because there is no real threat to entertain. As always, though, Fern finds jayden cross's earnest, literal tendencies to be endearing and sweet.[break][break]
They puff out a breath, and let the joke go.[break][break]
Just as they have let go of any blame that might've been placed elsewhere for what happened. What had occurred was between themself and MATIAS SILPH. Neither of the other two should've felt guilt for it. They didn't feel guilty for provoking the elite four member. It had been a choice, and Fern holds to it - even as it spikes their resentment. Even as they came away wounded and imbalanced. But that's a personal vendetta.[break][break]
Slouching further into the room, Fern makes their way over to Mint, hands resting on the countertop as they affectionately lean sideways against their friend. They hum thoughtfully as he answers the other's admin's question, eyes fluttering shut in contemplation. Or exhaustion.[break][break]
It is only when he concludes that they pipe up. "Bit of a wild goose chase, or maybe a hunch." Fern points at the primal shard they collected at Mt. Pyre. "I had a thought that perhaps that might draw one, or both of them, out of hiding."

They nodded as Zev clarified. A careful frown pulled their lips down. "I wonder where they're hiding, then.." That was, if there were more here apart from the reported Tapu Bulu.[break][break]
"I've only been to the tower once," they add, before curiosity won out. "What was that like? Finding the shard?" They toyed with the defunct primal shard in their hands. the one Tapu Koko had been drawn by - was that why? Because it'd mistaken it for another piece of Necrozma? Or because it thought the crystal would take it elsewhere?[break][break]
Or maybe it just wanted something shiny.[break][break]
"Some of them, for the most part." They didn't abruptly shock people or cause power outages anymore, at least. "But I do feel that mine are not..." they faltered, picking at their words, "...as strenuous to maintain as some others are proving to be." Like that all consuming, icy hatred that pulsed through jayden cross, without a calming presence. They same blinding emotion that had ripped through the Cave of Origin.[break][break]
They didn't regret their choice in the cave, though, of course. It had never been a debate or question in their mind. In fact, at that time, it had been the most in control of their abilities as they'd yet felt.

Though Fern had considered riding on the back of their milotic, much like Mint rides his lapras, their preference for their dragapult wins out as it often does. They lift higher in the air, still low enough to hear Mint for a bit. But just out of the ocean spray. They shield their eyes with a hand, looking out toward the horizon line. "Stubborn beast, isn't it?"[break][break]
The water is choppy and they look down toward their friend with a frown. "If the pull is too much, I can give you a lift," Fern offers before rising higher still to get a better vantage.[break][break]
Blue eyes scan the waves and they nudge Cecilia to circle the rocky outcropping. "I don't think so--" they reply, their frown deepening as they hear the frantic beep of the tracker in the background of the comm. "Be careful."[break][break]
It was close, so where was it?
