While Yujin examined a cluster of eggs, Gunner continued down the passage. He did not get far—only a few yards—before movement in the darkness ahead caused his whole body to go still. Familiar undulations suggested approaching Nihilego. [break][break]

"Miss Ha, ready yourself. We're not alone. Tom, set up a barrier." [break][break]

Psychic energy filled the space as the Claydol used PROTECT.

When the medics and nurses crowding around Penelope raised their voices in protest of her stubbornness, Gunner wished to join them. You need rest too, he wanted to insist. I will take care of the paperwork. [break][break]

And more selfishly: Gideon's done nothing wrong! [break][break]

But the incandescent rage upon her face stopped Gunner's breath and stole his words. The porcelain of her councilwoman's mask had cracked. Beyond the single hairline fault, magma roiled and bubbled. [break][break]

Fractions of a second were all he needed to assess the situation. Deny Penelope, and who else might fall within the sightlines of her wrath? These innocent medical personnel? Their aides? [break][break]

He, himself? [break][break]

Placing a reassuring hand on the shoulder of a nurse, Gunner stepped up to his superior and gripped her upper arm. "Of course, ma'am. Here, watch your step." [break][break]

Without a backward glance at the rest of the baffled medical tent, he led her into the daylight. Instead of traveling the distance to Ever Grande by dragonback, he recalled his Salamence and released his Arcanine. The glow of psychic energy followed his soft command. [break][break]

In the blink of an eye, they teleported back to Penelope's office.

Gunner joined her at the edge and peered into the darkness. The sharp scent of sulfur and brimstone filled his nose, while below him, broken bodies lay strewn amongst concrete rubble. A burnt sign for a train station swung on a crooked pole. [break][break]

His blood turned cold, and sweat broke out on his skin. An icy claw gripped his guts and twisted his stomach. [break][break]

"I don't know," he replied, wrenching his gaze away from the horrific sight. Hands akimbo, he surveyed the entrance to the cave. "If you're sure this is the place, let's keep going." [break][break]

Compared to what awaited below, the darkness of the cavern seemed surmountable. However, as soon as he stepped inside, the rotten stench intensified. A sheen of liquid on the walls gleamed in the phosphorescent light of strange flora. [break][break]

At one point, when Gunner rested a hand on the tunnel, it tensed beneath his touch, like a sensitive muscle. He jumped. "What the fuck?" he blurted out, utterly bewildered. [break][break]

A muffled heartbeat thudded in the distance. [break][break]

Gunner paused in the hallway as freya morningstar's hotel room door closed shut behind them. He stared down the corridor, as if searching for answers in the walls. Then he sighed and shook his head, meeting Wolfgang's gaze. [break][break]

"I don't know yet," Gunner admitted quietly. "It would be one thing if only Miss Morningstar had gone missing, but Mr. Silph and Miss Livy too?" [break][break]

The air smelled thick with conspiracy. [break][break]

"There's a bigger plot behind this, I think. There has to be." An intensity entered his face, darkening his features with frustration and self-admonishment. How could he not have been there to protect any of them?

Gunner leaned forward to peer down into the trench. It was a dizzying height, its steep slopes pockmarked with perilous-looking clefts and crevices. The bottom was swathed in ominous darkness. [break][break]

"And the outpost was right around here?" he asked, incredulous. Turning his head this way and that, he tried to gauge the length of the fissure. "This must have formed since then. Hopefully we can find your equipment." [break][break]

They had no choice but to proceed. Encased in a purple-pink, psychic aura, Tom Thumb the Claydol lowered them into the yawning abyss at a steady, careful speed. Gunner observed their surroundings as they descended. Once or twice, he thought he spotted a corpse or a cloud of disembodied eyes fluttering open, but when he blinked, they were gone. [break][break]

Tom lowered the small party on a walkable ledge lined with kelp-like plants, their broad leaves waving in an unseen current. A few yards down the path, a cave cut into the stone. [break][break]

Seeing it, the small hairs on the back of Gunner's neck stood on end. [break][break]

Without any hesitation, he relayed the explanation the nurse gave him, including the recommendation to see an eye specialist if the councilwoman's sight did not return within a day. [break][break]

"I can take you back to your home, where you can rest," he offered. "Your Pokémon can help you out while your eyesight recovers. And I can handle all the paperwork for today."

With all the trouble brewing in the Ultra Deep Sea, Gunner was not surprised to receive an assignment there. But instead of mining for Dynite Ore or Wishing Stars, he was to accompany a member of Interpol on her third expedition. [break][break]

What did surprise him was the identity of his partner. [break][break]

"Miss Ha, it's nice seeing you again," he said, greeting her with a familiar smile and an outstretched hand for a shake. "Though I wish it were under more relaxing circumstances, like that chess game in Slateport Park." [break][break]

He winked at Yujin, unable to help himself. But then he turned his attention to the alien landscape that stretched out before them. Ahead, the ground fell away in a sudden drop. The vastness of the trench sent a shiver down Gunner's spine; the mirth faded from his face as his jaw set in determination. [break][break]

"So, what's your objective here?" he asked, releasing his Claydol. The Pokémon could lower them into the trench at a safe pace, as well as teleport them back to the edge in case of danger.

Instead of an ULTRA BEAST, they may encounter and catch a PHIONE that has wandered into this rift from Hoenn instead.

Of course Remiel was hiding something from Gunner. The agent's suspicious nature told him that no defector was that forthcoming. But he wanted to return to the warmth of his own home, so he shook his head. [break][break]

"No more questions. That's all for this visit, Calcifet." Silently, Gunner vowed to make sure someone else stopped by Remiel's house for future check-ins. [break][break]

The agent swapped his Glaceon for his Hydreigon again and climbed onto the latter's back. A cloud of snowdust kicked up as they launched into the air. Gunner hoped Remiel choked on it.

"Of course, ma'am. I'll get on that right away," Gunner said without hesitation. Compiling a dossier for Naomi Sato and filling out the request for a search warrant caused less of an emotional tumult within him than the thought of interrogating Gideon. [break][break]

He stood to the side while field doctors and nurses fussed over Penelope. From beyond the barrier of their bodies, he observed the councilwoman. She was still highly agitated, but sure that was because of their near-death encounter. He couldn't blame her for lashing out. [break][break]

Gunner caught the arm of a passing nurse. "Will she be okay?" he asked in a low voice. [break][break]

"Her injuries are minor, but her eyesight—we're not sure if it's a permanent loss or not, yet. She needs to rest, and if her vision isn't back in twenty-four hours, she needs to set up an appointment with an ophthalmologist." [break][break]

Nodding in grim acceptance, the agent released the nurse.

Gunner's frown deepened as he hesitated. No, he could not be certain, not unless he spoke with Gideon about the matter directly. But he knew his brother. Gideon was the kind of man who got so caught up in his work that he ignored warning signs even when they were waving in his face. [break][break]

It was what had happened with his divorce. [break][break]

"I can speak with my brother and confirm whether he was unaware of Sato's allegiance," Gunner offered. "He's on a research trip right now so I can arrange to meet him when he's back." [break][break]

Which meant, unfortunately, that Gideon was unreachable for at least another week.

The fact that Paxton didn't outright reject the metaphorical olive branch sent relief flooding through Gunner. He let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. Seeing Paxton blush helped ease Gunner's own awkwardness. He offered the other man a slight smile at the reciprocation of friendship. [break][break]

A smile that fell instantly at Paxton's question. [break][break]

"I… She…" [break][break]

Gunner glanced away again, his discomfort growing. Memories of recent months flashed through his head: The drunken conversation with GIDEON GRAVES around New Year's Eve. mila alexopoulos bursting into Gunner's hospital bed with tears in her eyes. The way she showed up at Gideon's apartment every day without fail to look after Gunner. [break][break]

The heart-wrenching agony in his chest when he found her, injured, in the Giant Chasm. The warmth of her embrace and the softness of her skin. The fire she lit inside him whenever she looked his way. [break][break]

Gunner raised his gaze, his expression open and afraid. When he spoke, his voice was thick with emotion. [break][break]

"I'm in love with her, Paxton."

"Johtonian sounds good," Gunner agreed, nodding. [break][break]

He took a few steps from the bedroom to lean over the staircase bannister and yell Gideon's suggestion down to their father. Then the younger Graves returned to lingering in the elder's doorway. [break][break]

"Not too bad, actually. Someone will be coming over tomorrow to clean out ash from the gutters and show Mom and Dad's Pokémon how to keep it clean for the next several days." He couldn't imagine having to do such a dangerous task without helpful Water-types. [break][break]

"There were some boulders and smaller debris, but nothing too difficult to remove. I think there'll be some Fighting-types breaking up the biggest ones, and then they'll all be swept away." [break][break]

Gunner shook his head. "Considering the eruption, I'm surprised the house itself wasn't damaged." [break][break]

Or that their parents hadn't gotten hurt.
