Gunner stopped, brow furrowed in concern. "I'm not lost. Where are you trying to go? We're by the Ancient Tomb right now, but if you head that way, you'll reach Fortree City in no time."[break][break]

He gestured westward.[break][break]

"However, if you're trying to get to the Safari Zone or Lilycove, you'll want to walk that way." He pointed in the opposite direction, eastward. "That way's longer, though, so you might be walking for a while."[break][break]

As they spoke, the tall grass nearby rustled. Elaine launched herself at the Poochyena that emerged, paralyzing him with FORCE PALM. The commotion drew Gunner's attention; seeing what had happened, he threw a Pokéball to capture the Poochyena.[break][break]

Then he turned back to the stranger and smiled. "I'm Gunner, by the way."

The pair enjoyed their stroll for another ten minutes without interruption. They had only a late summer breeze and the distant call of various bird Pokémon as their companions. Then, suddenly, Kay went still again and camouflaged herself. Gunner stopped walking as soon as he noticed.[break][break]

Soundlessly, a Doublade emerged from around a bend in the hiking trail. Gunner crouched down next to his hidden Pokémon and waited, unmoving. The Doublade took her time nearing their location, but he was patient.[break][break]

Without warning, Kay's tongue snapped out for another FEINT ATTACK. It latched onto the wild Pokémon and dragged it closer. Gunner flung an empty Pokéball to capture the Doublade.

The Ancient Tomb. From where Gunner stood atop a sloping hill, he could easily see its black entrance yawning, ominous and inviting at the same time. There, in the forested space before the cavern, he and others had fought Team Rocket to save the Galarian Heroes from Ruinous Beasts.[break][break]

Yet more had happened then, if twenty years of vague, uncertain memory were to be believed.[break][break]

No scars remained in the landscape to tell of the battle. Trenches in the soil had filled in with earth and underbrush; the avalanche caused by Chien-Pao had melted away beneath the brutal Hoennien sun.[break][break]

Heaving a sigh, Gunner turned his back on the tomb. "Nothing to see here, Elaine," he said to his Mienshao. She uttered a small chirp, falling into step beside him as he resumed walking down the woodland trail.[break][break]

Just ahead, the blonde man caught sight of a stranger on the path.[break][break]

"Looks like we're not alone out here," Gunner said to his Pokémon. Then, raising his voice as they neared, he called out, "Hey, good afternoon."

The familiar buzz of a Scizor's wingbeats drew Gunner's attention to a gap between the trees. He spotted the red carapace even from that distance. Without taking his eyes off the wild Pokémon, he gestured for Kay to keep moving.[break][break]

"I don't want to disturb it," Gunner explained when the Kecleon gave him a quizzical look. "I don't think Hector would be too pleased with another male around," he added, referencing his own Scizor.[break][break]

Kay nodded in understanding and continued down the hiking trail ahead of Gunner.

Kay froze mid-stride, her eyes focused on a space between the trees. Gunner noticed just in time to watch her disappear from sight, her natural camouflage blending her seamlessly into her surroundings.[break][break]

Moments later, a Magnemite floated into view from between those same trees. They were normally more common in urban areas, especially near sources of electricity. However, it was not common for one to make its way down into the woods.[break][break]

Gunner did not move. Instead, he waited for Kay.[break][break]

As soon as the Magnemite drew close enough, the Kecleon struck. Her long, sticky tongue lashed out in a FEINT ATTACK.[break][break]

The Magnemite spun around helplessly for several rotations. Then it floated off in the other direction, wobbling through the air as if dizzy.[break][break]

"Impressive strike," Gunner said, smiling with pride. Kay chirped and dropped her camouflage. Side-by-side, the two continued down the forest trail.

Gunner stared back at Penelope as she contemplated his offer, his expression neutral, patient. She had every right to refuse him, but he hoped she was not so foolish that she would choose that option.[break][break]

After all, with so few people knowing the full extent of her Avatarship, she had to lean on all the resources available to her. The incident at POG Bank was proof of that.[break][break]

When Penelope finally agreed, Gunner smiled. "That sounds like a plan."[break][break]

He turned his head to gaze out the window. By this point, the taxi carriage was speeding over the ocean. Ever Grande City sat in the distance on its island, growing larger with every passing minute.[break][break]

"Just let me know when you're ready, and I'll be there."

Once Gunner and Gideon rigged up the shorn Celesteela arm, the former pointed it at the horde of shambling Megalopolans. He pressed the trigger to expel the colorless but strong-smelling gas, spraying it in a wide arc in front of him.[break][break]

Then he slammed the button to ignite it.[break][break]

Fire bloomed across the crater, its roar mingling with the wordless screams of countless Megalopolans. Gunner did not stop the onslaught until the last cries died out.[break][break]

He dropped his end of the Celesteela arm onto the ground. Sweat poured down his face from such close proximity to the heat.[break][break]

"I think that's all of them," he said, panting, his heart shuddering against his ribcage with the adrenaline rush.[break][break]

Protocol and regulations had nothing to say about where the line was when comforting a professional superior. Gunner returned the squeeze of Penelope's hand, then withdrew to put some space between them.[break][break]

"That sounds like a good idea," he said, regarding the appointment with Eva Morales. Then a memory came to him, one he'd all but forgotten but now bloomed in his mind, as clear as day.[break][break]

"I actually helped her once," Gunner continued, turning back to his boss. "With her Avatar powers, I mean. She was in a park in Ever Grande City, trying to form a shield of wind."[break][break]

He mimicked the way she had waved her arms around to summon the barrier, though his own movements were vague and clumsy.[break][break]

"If you need help with figuring out and mastering your powers, I'd be more than happy to help you, too. And since there are certain hazards that come with them, we can do it somewhere in the wilderness, away from prying eyes."[break][break]

Somewhere Penelope could practice without fear or shame holding her back.

The frustration that bled through Penelope's words, expression, and body language was completely different from the breezy way angelo vestri had acted while training with his Avatar powers. Gunner saw the pain flash across her face and heard the defensive note in her voice.[break][break]

Questions raced through his head. What did it mean to be an Avatar of a truly unknown Pokémon? To have the bond thrust upon you without first knowing the creature? To have a foreign presence in your mind, impressing its own feelings upon you?[break][break]

Lonely, he thought. Isolating. Othering.[break][break]

Wordlessly, Gunner stood, causing the carriage to sway a little. He crossed the gap that separated him from Penelope and sat down next to her.[break][break]

He wrapped his hand around one of her fists.[break][break]

"You'll figure it all out, Miss Livy. If anyone can, it's the Director of the HBIC," he said, his tone possessing a note of quiet confidence. Then he smiled. "And you won't have to do it alone, either."

Gunner had read that name before, but only in the context of data gathered from the suspicious mobile dating game, RONDEZ-VIEW OF LUV. Along with three other Pokémon, the Hoennian government had decided to group them under the label 'Ruinous Beasts'.[break][break]

Ruinous how? Why? Many of the powers granted Avatars could be used for good or ill. Flowing lava and bubbles of magma were no different. It had been unfortunate that Penelope had not had control over her powers in the POG Bank office, but that shouldn't make her or her new patron a liability.[break][break]

Right?[break][break]

"Besides the reports from earlier this year," and the related speculations, he thought but did not say, "what do you know of this Chi-Yu? What has it revealed it you?"[break][break]

And then, because of what had transpired, Gunner's expression softened as he asked:[break][break]

"Are you all right?"

The first words out of Penelope's mouth were so common in an agency shrouded with secrecy that Gunner found himself nodding before he grasped the implications of her words.[break][break]

"Understood, ma'am."[break][break]

Then his brain caught up with the conversation, and he sat back with his hands resting on his knees.[break][break]

"I'll have someone from public relations speak with POG Bank before they can report it to the press. Officially, it will be a Magcargo that got loose and started to fill the office building with lava. Or something like that."[break][break]

Gunner looked Penelope in the eye, waiting for her approval—and her explanation.

"I know what you do!" Gunner protested, though his voice lacked the usual heat whenever he wanted to argue. "I just—I don't know what all goes into it."[break][break]

He swatted her hand away when she poked his cheek, the motion more playful than annoyed.[break][break]

"I'm not cute. You know how it is, though, with Vincenzo." Mila's Alolan Ninetales, who Gunner had gotten to know through his off-and-on relationship with the fashion designer. "When you've known a Pokémon for that long, it's natural for them to become a close companion."[break][break]

Guinevere huffed again as she dropped back down to all fours. Subconsciously, Gunner leaned against her. Her warmth and bulk were familiar, even though she'd only evolved a year ago.

Gunner walked through the thick forest occupying Route 113. The trees surrounding him were both familiar and new, the consequence of such an ancient but ever-changing natural landscape. He walked old, well-trodden paths yet marveled at every new sight.[break][break]

Often in his youth, he'd followed those hiking trails to take a break from schoolwork or the strict way his parents raised him. Sometimes he came with GIDEON GRAVES; other times, he wandered the woods alone.[break][break]

"It's a nice day, isn't it?" Gunner said to his Kecleon, his companion for that day's walk. The Pokémon nodded enthusiastically, eyes scanning their surroundings for a tasty treat.

Gunner's eyebrows rose into his forehead when Mila turned the clipboard to face him. He'd never seen her drawings before. Without thinking, he reached out to take the clipboard from her for a closer look.[break][break]

"Wow, Mila, these are really good," he said, awe evident in his voice. Guinevere reared up onto her hind legs for a peek, and he angled the clipboard so she could see more clearly. "Aren't these designs so cool, Guin? They all look pretty good, don't they?"[break][break]

The Typhlosion huffed her approval, before leaning in and butting her head against Gunner's in a display of affection. Absently, he reached up to scratch her behind the ear.[break][break]

"I think I like the second design the best," he said to Mila as he handed the clipboard back to her. "Defense is my main role in operations these days."[break][break]

He thought back to the recent AQUA Initiative meeting and his job assisting with security detail. If he'd had a Sygna suit then, would events have turned out differently?
