Gunner hesitated, wondering how much of his plans he should reveal to Mila. But she deserved to know, he decided. If they were going to continue their relationship, picking up where they'd left off two years ago, she had to know.[break][break]

"I'm going to break up with my girlfriend tomorrow," he said, his tone decisive, his expression set with determination.[break][break]

Mila did not need to know that he and Summer had already, essentially, broken up. That they had spent twenty years with distance between them, the betrayal healing into friendship. He just needed to know with complete certainty that they were over in this world as well.[break][break]

Gunner dressed quickly, just in case more customers entered the shop. The broad expanse of his skin disappeared under his clothes, and he buckled his gear back around his chest. He was about to say goodbye when Mila pressed a soft kiss against his lips. Instinctively, his hands wrapped around her waist, keeping her there for a moment longer.[break][break]

"I missed you, Gunner."[break][break]

Her confession and her tenderness made his heart soar. Perhaps they could go back to the way things had been after all. And maybe this time it would be better.[break][break]

In the past, Gunner and Mila's bedroom romps always had a tension beneath the passion. They were two people always pushing each other to the edge, daring, challenging. More often than not, sex was a venting of frustrations with each other — both the yearning and the loathing. Only occasionally did they bare the truth of their hearts to each other, preferring instead to hide away the vulnerability and affection.[break][break]

Not this time.[break][break]

This time, Gunner held Mila close, as if she were the most precious person in his world. He poured out two and twenty years of desperate longing. Every stroke of his hand, every roll of his hips, every kiss against her skin was a testament to his reverence for her. Eyes closed, he let the world melt away so that they were the only two people left who mattered. Promises fell from his lips in the form of filthy murmurs, the ones he knew thrilled her.[break][break]

And when it was over, he held her there against the wall, not yet willing to draw away. Panting, Gunner pressed his forehead against Mila's, relishing their closeness for as long as he could. Then, with great reluctance, he pulled away and lowered her so she could stand on her own.[break][break]

I love you, came the words, unbidden, to the front of his mind.[break][break]

Instead, he gently brushed the hair out of her eyes and said, "I want to see you more, now that you're back. Not tonight, but soon? I have something to do tomorrow."

Mila's reaction was everything Gunner had hoped for. And when the door chimed, an old thrill coursed through him, something he hadn't felt since the last time he'd been devious with her. He continued to coax her higher, daring her to reach her peak while the customer was still there.[break][break]

"Hello? Is there anyone here who can help me?" the stranger called out, unaware of what was happening behind a row of dresses.[break][break]

Gunner stifled a laugh as he kept up his ministrations. His hands gripped Mila's hips, keeping her steady against his face. Her nectar was so sweet, and he was starving from what felt like twenty years without her.[break][break]

Eventually, the customer left empty-handed. When the door shut, Gunner drew back from Mila whether she had finished or not. Urgent hands pulled off his shirt, unbuckled his belt, pushed down pants and underwear that were far too constricting.[break][break]

Then he picked her up by her backside and pressed her against the wall with his entire body. Her warmth enveloped him so completely and deliciously, he couldn't help the way his eyes fluttered closed. He groaned into her neck and planted a kiss there.[break][break]

"You feel so good," Gunner murmured into Mila's skin.[break][break]

She felt better than good.[break][break]

She felt like home.

Gunner had a split second window to stare with ravenous hunger at Mila's bare chest before she dragged his mouth back to hers. He kissed her fiercely, a soft growl in his throat as she pulled away to speak.[break][break]

He matched the daring edge of her smile with a mischievous smirk of his own. "Then we'll give your customers a show," he rumbled before lowering his lips to her pale, unblemished skin. His large hands gripped her hips, holding her still against the wall, as he left bitemarks and bruises in his wake.[break][break]

And then Gunner went lower, kneeling in front of Mila. With one hand, he lifted the edge of her skirt; with the other, he pulled down her underwear. The scent of her desire hit him all at once. His lust flared. Suddenly, nothing else mattered but her.[break][break]

Hooking one of her legs over his shoulder, he leaned in and drank deeply, his tongue drawing promises of ecstasy against her skin.

Gunner could not help the soft moan that escaped his throat as Mila's hands ran over his body. He followed her automatically as she backed up into the wall, allowing her to remove the harness of his uniform. His gloves followed his equipment to the floor, along with the jacket he wore. Beneath it, his plain, body-hugging shirt did little to conceal the landscape of hard muscle Mila knew all too well.[break][break]

Gunner's own hands were busy, roaming her curves and untucking her blouse from the waistband of her skirt. Calloused fingers slipped under the clothing and caressed her bare skin. She was so warm and so familiar. He knew the dip of her waist, the shallow curve of her stomach, the spot at the small of her back that made her shiver with delight.[break][break]

Without thinking, Gunner's mouth moved down Mila's neck. He pressed hot kisses against her skin, their contact stoking the fire deep inside him. For weeks, all he'd wanted was Mila in his bed, her sweet noises of pleasure in his ear. Finally, after being so good, his wait was over. He could have her.[break][break]

"Lock the door," he murmured. Reaching up behind her back, he deftly unclasped the hook of her bra. "I'm going to ravish you right here if you don't stop me."

Gunner nodded. Summer's request for time was reasonable. Even if they hadn't just gone through an unexplainable yet life-altering experience, needing time to process the offer and make a decision was expected.[break][break]

"Of course. Take your time. You know how to reach me once you've made a decision. In the meantime, I won't say anything to my bosses about your… situation."[break][break]

It was the least he could do for her.[break][break]

"A bite to eat sounds great." Gunner stood from the bench, his movement slow and weary. Even though he was still young, the conversation made him feel like an old man. Again. "Anywhere's good with me."[break][break]

Sure enough, they had their moment of peace. And when it ended naturally at the close of the meal, he said goodbye to Summer. Goodbye to everything they had been before the battle. Goodbye to their relationship and to their child.[break][break]

The Hoennian sun warmed his face as he walked home. For the first time in what felt like months, Gunner Graves breathed a deep sigh of relief as a burdensome weight lifted from his shoulders. He walked through the door of his cage and into freedom.

Gunner slid into one of the booths at LIBERTY BURGER, a famous Unovan burger joint in the lower district of Slateport City. The waitress who'd led him there put two menus on the table, one for him and one for his partner for the night, Serena Malcolm.[break][break]

The pair had just finished another operation for the Pokémon League and had agreed to grab something to eat before returning to Ever Grande City. A shared meal was the perfect opportunity to discuss something else, too, that was on both their minds.[break][break]

Gunner picked up the menu, which was a single, long sheet of paper laminated in plastic. One of the corners was dog-eared, and one side of the menu had a distinct stain that looked like it had once been ketchup.[break][break]

"Apparently this is the best place for Unovan burgers in Slateport," the blonde man said to Serena without looking up from the menu. Besides the signature sandwich of that region, the restaurant also offered hot wings, fries, and other meals that promised grease and heartburn.[break][break]

"Their Castelia City sauce is supposed to be really good."

"You know it," Gunner said, accepting the cold beverage and popping open the can. He took a refreshing sip, glancing over to watch Enid splash her new playmate back before scampering off to initiate a chase.[break][break]

Turning back to the fire, Gunner resumed unpacking his purchases. Originally, he had planned to keep the watermelon sealed in its plastic container, but the thought of putting it in burgers prompted a raised eyebrow.[break][break]

"Grilled watermelon? Never heard of it. Did you bring supplies for burgers?" he asked, looking over at the cooler with the meat inside. "Or is it going to be steaks today?"[break][break]

He remembered liking Angelo's cooking, but he couldn't remember actually eating together.

Gunner shook his head and slipped the ring back onto his finger. "You know I'm not the marriage type," he said, though he couldn't recall ever talking with Skyler about marriage or his love life.[break][break]

But her mention of a wedding triggered deep memories in his psyche. Like hers, they were hazy, snippets of food and drink and laughter the only parts he could remember. GIDEON GRAVES had been there, he knew.[break][break]

But his brother was divorced, and the memories of his actual wedding differed from the one Gunner could barely remember.[break][break]

His eyes followed Skyler's to the laptop on the coffee table. While he appreciated her offer, he had access to more information at headquarters.[break][break]

"I thought about rooting through the database at work to see if I could find anything," Gunner admitted. "No one who was there at the Ancient Tomb has been able to patch everything together into a single, all-encompassing, coherent report."
