Frank knew having Cillian Quinn as a client invited the potential for unpleasantness from the man's Kanto connections. He had wrestled with the morality of meeting with such an infamous man — a man whose pockets he knew ran deep.[break][break]

In the end, money had won.[break][break]

"That's great news," Frank said of Galar, though the relief in his tone did not enter his face. They were still entertaining small talk, after all.[break][break]

He nursed his bourbon while the yacht continued its cruise through the ocean. All around them, the sea stretched from horizon to horizon. A pod of Finizen leaped from the water some distance away.[break][break]

"Any idea where the best spot to cliff dive is in Hoenn?"

Frank's own struggles against the sand grew weaker as the Palossand drained his life force. His Wiglett fought back against the hostile Pokémon with another WATER PULSE, but he was not trained for battle. Another MEGA DRAIN rendered the Garden Eel Pokémon unconscious.[break][break]

"Shit, shit!" Frank swore, returning Ricky to his Pokéball.[break][break]

By then, the man was up to his armpits in the sand, and sinking quickly. He couldn't reach for another Pokéball, couldn't do anything except tilt his head back to keep his mouth and nose clear.[break][break]

But even that did not last for long. As the sounds of battle became muffled, Frank took a final gasp of breath — a last, defiant act against the Ghost Pokémon trying to kill them. Then he squeezed his eyes shut and let the sand engulf him.[break][break]

For a moment, the pounding of his heartbeat and the concentration needed to hold his breath were the only things he could focus on. But then the earth loosened its grip on him, and a strange sensation took hold: gravity.[break][break]

He was falling. Through empty space, in fact.

"I saw clips here and there some years back, but focused primarily on Unova's battle scene," he admitted, taking note of the smooth way Cillian recovered after his frown. So Galar was a sore spot?[break][break]

"I hear the reconstruction efforts are going well. Maybe it'll be possible to visit soon. I haven't been there in a long time, not since I was a young man."[break][break]

Frank poured his own glass of bourbon. He sipped it for a taste and smiled, pleased with the rich flavor.[break][break]

"I love waterskiiing. I did that a few times back in Unova. Can't say I've done any cliff diving, though." His eyes glittered with amusement and intrigue.[break][break]

"Sounds like it could kill you if not done right," he added with a laugh. "Maybe I should try it."[break][break]

Beneath his feet, the yacht rumbled. Crew members had hauled up the anchor and recalled the gangway from the pier. It was time to set sail.

Frank glanced up. His eyebrows rose into his head and his mouth fell open slightly in surprise. Memphis did look young, but most people got to taste alcohol on their eighteenth birthday — legal drinking age.[break][break]

Was Memphis eighteen? Surely he was older than that?[break][break]

"Well, if that's the case, that all depends on your taste. Do you like sweet? Bitter? Smoky?" Frank paused to consider other flavor profiles, especially the kind available in a hole-in-the-wall Paldean restaurant.[break][break]

"Hmm, something sweet would be a good start," he decided without waiting for Memphis' answer. Raising his hand, he flagged down a passing waitress. "A pitcher of sangria for the table, please."

Frank was so used to seeing staff at the beck and call of powerful men and women that he didn't bat an eye at Cillian ordering the yacht's crew around. Instead, he accepted it as par for the course.[break][break]

And either Cillian was flexing his status, or he was so used to it that it didn't occur to him how it would appear to others.[break][break]

But Frank had a feeling it was the former.[break][break]

"Oh, you know, this and that," he said with great nonchalance. "I used to bet on Pokémon battles, back in the day. But recently, I got interested in luxury cars. I had no idea so many of them are used for racing."[break][break]

The server returned, pushing a drink cart. Atop it were two glasses, an ice bucket, and a bottle of bourbon. Frank glanced at the label and immediately recognized it as top shelf.[break][break]

"What about you?" he asked Cillian. "How do you spend your free time — when you're not sailing, of course?"

Frank turned his attention to the Cacturne as he gestured toward something they could not see. He arched an eyebrow at Xenon's offer, too, and accepted it more enthusiastically than Gerald did. "Of course!"[break][break]

It was not long before Frank stumbled in the sand — not because he lost his footing, but because a strong pull brought him to his knees. Panic rose in his chest as his gaze darted around, seeking whatever had yanked on him.[break][break]

As he looked into the ruins, a Palossand emerged from the ground, pulling on the sand around him, Xenon, and Gerald.[break][break]

"Shit!" Frank exclaimed. "We gotta get out of here!"[break][break]

But as he struggled to find his footing, he ended up sinking deeper and deeper into the sand.[break][break]

"Quick! Ricky, use WATER PULSE!" he ordered.[break][break]

His Wiglett attacked, spraying a jet of water at the Palossand. The dual-type emitted an otherworldly screech and struck back with MEGA DRAIN.

If Frank wasn't already used to wealthy individuals reaching out to financial advisors with questions and job opportunities, he would have found the sudden invitation from Cillian Quinn suspicious. However, Frank only saw it as another chance to seize more fortune and business for himself.[break][break]

He admired the gold lettering on the ship's hull and chuckled. "I don't blame you. It's clever," he said, ready to say whatever was necessary to secure a contract with such a powerful man.[break][break]

Cillian's portfolio was impressive, and Frank would surely benefit from a successful partnership.[break][break]

He followed the blonde man onto the yacht. At his side padded his Alolan Persian on silent paws, his tail swinging idly from left to right.[break][break]

"Oh, I can drink, definitely," Frank said, catching the lighthearted tone and grinning back. "What's the point of living if you can't have a bit of bourbon once in a while?"

Frank chuckled, unfazed by Xenon's insult. "Surprise!" he said, spreading his hands in front of him. "I'm more resilient than I look." He winked. "Promise."[break][break]

Gerald approached at a slower pace, but Frank waved enthusiastically at him and his Kecleon anyway. "Gerald! Good to see you. Find anything interesting yet?"[break][break]

Out of the ground between Frank's feet popped his Wiglett. The Garden Eel Pokémon remained low to the ground at first, then rose to his natural height of nearly four feet when he saw the newcomers were friendly.

"A kindred spirit then," he said, raising his glass in toast to her before downing the rest of his drink. He finished it with an emphatic sigh of pleasure and slid it over for the bartender to take.[break][break]

She introduced herself at last. Frank wracked his brain for any hint that he knew her. "Mmmm, Beatrix… Beatrix…" But he shook his head. "Nope, sorry. Doesn't ring a bell. What do you do, Beatrix?"[break][break]

The bartender stepped up to ask if he wanted anything else, but Frank shook his head. He was satisfied with that many drinks at such a late hour.

The first time Frank had visited the Ultra Desert, he had not been prepared. The second time he visited, he made sure to bring everything he had lacked: enough water for the entire stay, snacks to keep up his energy, the right clothing to help him stay cool while wicking away sweat.[break][break]

He had found the ruins he'd been looking for, too. The architecture did not look like anything he'd seen before, but he also knew very little about history and ancient cultures.[break][break]

That didn't matter, of course. What mattered was getting information about home so he could forward it to his friend, @albrecht.[break][break]

Frank was busy taking photographs with his phone when movement in the corner of his eye drew his attention. To his surprise, the people were familiar faces: the very same people he'd encountered during his last expedition into the otherworldly realm.[break][break]

"Hey!" he greeted them with a wave of his hand. "What a coincidence. Are you coming to take a look at the ruins, too?"

Something about the woman was familiar too, but like her, Frank couldn't place it. Had he seen her face before, maybe on social media? That must be it. She must have popped up on his "for you page" while he killed time scrolling through the Internet one night.[break][break]

"We're in Slateport City. Lower district, too. It's got all sorta things: gambling, clubbing, the night market." Frank started counting them on his fingers, but got confused and gave up. He shrugged at her and grinned. "Just depends on what you're in the mood for."
