A few stools down the bar from Beatrix Nash, Frank chuckled at the bartender's harassed expression and the long, drawn-out "c'moooooooooooooooooon" that spilled from the woman's throat.[break][break]

The silver-haired man tried to hide a smile behind his glass, his fourth drink of the night. At that late hour, Frank was in a good place, well past buzzed but not so drunk he didn't have his wits about him.[break][break]

Well, perhaps he possessed only half his wits.[break][break]

"You heard the woman!" he shouted at the bartender, a loose grin slapped across his mouth. "Chop, chop!"[break][break]

He clapped twice to emphasize his words, then picked up his glass again and lifted it in a toast toward her.[break][break]

"Whatcha out here for, beautiful?" Frank asked her. Oh, good. He was still on the complimentary side of catcalling. "Celebrating something?"

Frank remained sitting in the water, eyes riveted by the fireworks display. With so many going off at once, the noise and the bright colors were almost overwhelming. But he laughed alongside Damien, the other man's laughter infectious.[break][break]

Only when Damien leaned against his shoulder did Frank tear his eyes away from the fireworks.[break][break]

"Shit, this didn't go the way I'd planned at all," said the silver-haired man, though his eyes danced with delight. "Now what are we gonna do with the rest of our night?"[break][break]

He could think of a number of things, but he wanted to hear it from Damien.

The smile on Frank's face vanished when he saw Damien's sparkler fall into the bin between two boxes. The cardboard immediately caught fire.[break][break]

Frank's legs had never worked harder in his life. Dropping his own sparkler safely onto the sand, he dashed after Damien into the surf. Even when his bare feet splashed in water, he kept running. Damien was just ahead. Frank reached for him when suddenly—[break][break]

BOOM!

Frank fell into the shallows at the tremendous explosion of small fireworks. He turned around to stare at the burst of lights and loud pops. His eyes had gone wide with a mix of awe and horror.[break][break]

"Holy fuck!" he exclaimed.

Frank arrived just minutes after Memphis' moment of anxiety — unbeknownst to the older man, of course. The businessman entered the restaurant as if he owned the place. An easy smile graced his face as she greeted the hostess. He spotted Memphis within seconds and departed from the woman with a casual wink.[break][break]

"Sorry I'm late," Frank said to his acquaintance, not sounding sorry at all. "I didn't keep you waiting long, did I?"[break][break]

He snatched up the menu without waiting for Memphis' answer. Violet eyes scanned the familiar pictures and names of the dishes before Frank flipped to the drinks menu.[break][break]

The genuine smile of delight on Damien's face was worth every single fuck-up and small manipulation Frank had ever done. He picked a sparkler from the pack and lit it up with the lighter.[break][break]

The bright, dancing lights illuminated their faces in the darkness of deep night, transporting Frank back to a memory of their childhood. They squatted in an alleyway with other kids, lighting sparklers, giggling, shrieking. Their mothers came out of the nearby houses with snacks and soft drinks before retreating again to leave the kids to their own devices.[break][break]

Frank had always been one of the oldest children present, but that hadn't mattered. Nothing had been more fun during those innocent times at the start of summer, when they no longer had to go to school and could just play all day.[break][break]

"I managed to get my hands on firecrackers, ground spinners, poppers, snakes, and small fountains, too," Frank said, holding his sparkler as far away from the plastic bin as he could as he rifled through the rest of the boxes with his other hand.[break][break]

"Heeeeeyyy! You made it!"[break][break]

Frank was only a little tipsy, having enjoyed a few glasses of bourbon earlier that night. After all, if he wanted to do this thing with Damien, he had to be sober. Mostly sober.[break][break]

Either way, as a result of his recent drinking, Frank was in an excellent mood. He had managed to arrive at Slateport Beach without taking any wrong turns or hurting himself from a fall. Of course, it helped that his Persian had guided him where to go with keen eyes.[break][break]

"How was work? Busy? Look, I got something fun for us."[break][break]

Seemingly oblivious of Damien's glower, Frank opened a plastic box at his feet and removed some objects. Using his phone's flashlight, he shined the light onto one of them as he handed it to Damien.[break][break]

It was a packet of unlit sparklers.[break][break]

"Fireworks!" Frank explained, beaming like a boy. "Like the stuff we played with when we were kids. I got all kinds!"

But the other two seemed distracted by something lurking beyond the safety of their hiding place. Frank assumed it was a Pokémon; after all, what else could survive the sandstorm?[break][break]

"I didn't see anything either," he said. "Maybe it was just one of those Pokémon."[break][break]

Thankfully, the storm quickly abated, passing by as quickly as it had reached them. Fresh sand coated everything within sight, including the rocky outcropping under which they'd hid. Frank was first to venture out.[break][break]

"Whew! Well, it was nice chatting with all of you, but I think I should head back before another one of those hits. Can you point me in the direction of the rift out of here?" he asked Gerald and Xenon.[break][break]
