Frank hardly seemed to notice that he was still holding Memphis' wrist, and released it just as casually as he'd taken it. His violet eyes did notice the way the younger man's sudden flush, but he said nothing. The heat, perhaps.[break][break]

"Great! Oh, hey, maybe we can stop by a place to get something nice and cold to drink. This desert is killing me!" Frank said, chatty as always. He recalled his Rotom into a Pokéball and started off toward the jeep, his hands in his pockets.[break][break]

Upon reaching the vehicle, Frank opened one of the back doors so Memphis could enter first, then climbed inside after him. As soon as the air conditioning hit him, he relaxed against the seat with a dramatic sigh of contentment.[break][break]

"Back to Mauville," he told the driver. The vehicle lurched forward and started making its way through the dunes. Frank, meanwhile, took out his phone again. "So, your email? So I can send you these photos," he said to Memphis.

Frank was not nearly as considerate as Gerald. He snatched up Xenon's proffered water bottle. "I do, thank you!" he exclaimed as he uncapped it. "I had drunk all of mine already while I was terribly lost, so I—"[break][break]

As soon as he saw the sandy dregs of water within the bottle, all words died on his tongue. With a tight-lipped smile that barely concealed his chagrin, he replaced the cap on the bottle and handed it back to Xenon.[break][break]

"Nevermind! I'm good, too!"[break][break]

The sandstorm did not seem to be abating, so Frank got as comfortable as he could between the rock, his new acquaintances, and the Aurorus.[break][break]

"So… doing work for your bosses, huh? Is it work for a museum or something?" he asked, making small talk. "I'd heard there were ruins nearby and wanted to check them out, but couldn't find them."

Miracles. Frank was not a man who believed in such things, but the common people — consumers — certainly did, if the market was to be believed. And Frank watched the market with careful scrutiny, divining from it as any Johtonian seer would read their tea leaves.[break][break]

"Don't get me wrong! I am not skeptical of your confidence at all — quite the opposite," he said. "It's rare to see someone stand up to the likes of Mr. Silph. Many business owners are content to do their little thing here and there in his shadow."[break][break]

The doors to their private room open, and more waiters enter bearing trays and plates of entrées: poached whitefish fillet with vegetable pearls and sorrel nage; and grilled pork chop with polenta gratin, green olives, and truffle jus.[break][break]

Frank smiled in gratitude at the handsome young man — Atticus, his nametag said — who placed a plate in front of him. Then the waiters departed, leaving Frank to address his dining companion instead.[break][break]

"But diversity is better for the economy than monopoly, and as a financial advisor, the economy's growth is in my best interest. And if that means cutting some red tape here and there, well." His smile widened, taking on a confident edge. "That's no trouble at all."

They emerged from the space-time distortion to find the desert exactly as it was beforehand. Frank glanced back at the dome of hazy purple energy, already wondering what else might have happened had he stayed. Perhaps if he found one again, but went with someone whose Pokémon were trained for battle…[break][break]

A car honk pulled Frank from his musings. Some yards away, the all-terrain jeep he'd rented for the day sat, unaffected by the phenomenon. The driver he'd paid had rolled the window down and was yelling, asking if they were all right.[break][break]

"We're fine, thanks!" Frank called back. Then he turned to Memphis. "I guess so. It's probably not safe to stay here since I don't know how long these things last. Want to hitch a ride back to Mauville City?"[break][break]

Frank jerked his thumb toward the jeep.

Frank listened carefully as he enjoyed both the beignets and yellowtail tartar. He could determine two things about Malachi from the man's little spiel.[break][break]

First, that he was either passionate or full of himself. Only people who stuffed so many words in such a short timespan possessed those personality traits, and Frank was quite familiar with both circumstances.[break][break]

Second, that Malachi was familiar with all the same buzzwords Frank's own superiors used when pitching marketing schemes to the ignorant. In fact, Frank had used them himself on others.[break][break]

"You paint a very altruistic picture, Mr. Rathburne," the silver-haired man said once his companion had finished. He wanted to ask if Malachi's marketing team had come up with the pitch, or if the businessman had thought of it himself. But Frank knew better than to sour Malachi's first impression of him.[break][break]

Waiters removed the empty plates, the hors d'oeuvres devoured. Frank took another sip of wine while they waited for their main course to arrive. "So you're not intimidated by the likes of FERNANDO SILPH, I take it?" he asked, sounding impressed by Malachi's confidence.

Frank looked up to see his Rotom and Memphis' Porygon attempting to drive back the aggressive Samurott. He gave an eager nod in agreement. "Yeah, let's do that."[break][break]

His eyes darted around, taking quick stock of their surroundings.[break][break]

"Before the world got all purple-y, my driver was over there." He pointed west, toward a wall of the distortion that glitched and jumped like old computer graphics. "If we run fast enough and far enough, we should be able to reach him. Right?"[break][break]

He didn't wait for confirmation. Shoving his phone into his back pocket, Frank reached for Memphis' without giving the action a second thought. If the younger man allowed it, Frank would wrap his fingers around Memphis' thin wrist, then lead him in that direction.[break][break]

Duke continued to DISCHARGE electricity at the Hisuian Pokémon, staying close to the humans until they reached what seemed like the edge of the distortion. Hesitantly, Frank swiped at the barrier with his free hand. His fingers passed through with ease.[break][break]

"Here we go!" Holding his breath as if he were underwater, which made no sense, he charged through the barrier with Memphis in tow.

One of Frank's many skills that helped him climb the corporate ladder was his ability to read people. A necessary skill, it helped him know how to respond to them, how to curry their favor.[break][break]

He read the many emotions flickering across Memphis' face like a book but maintained an oblivious, amiable smile.[break][break]

"Sure! Happy to send theem along. Oi, Duke, get over here."[break][break]

Frank waved for his Rotom, who floated the phone up to its trainer's side. He took the device in his hand. As he pulled open the new contact screen, Duke exited the phone and zipped circles around the two men.[break][break]

A Hisuian Samurott materialized nearby, emerging as if from nothing thanks to the energy of the distortion. Duke buzzed in alarm, electricity DISCHARGING at the sea lion.[break][break]

Frank's Pokémon were not trained for battle, so unless Memphis' were, the explorers needed to leave, and quickly.

"Good to see you too!" Frank said, beaming once he confirmed the other person was, in fact, Memphis.[break][break]

They hadn't met since the trek up to Rustboro City. Frank had mentioned visiting the museum where Memphis worked, but he couldn't remember the name of it or where it was, so he'd dropped the idea. Museums weren't exactly what he considered a good time, anyway.[break][break]

"I have no fucking clue," Frank admitted when asked about the murals. "I just have a professor friend who loves old stuff like this, but he can't go out much. His health's not great. So I thought, let me take some photos for him, you know?"[break][break]

Anything to take Frank out of the boredom of routine and into something new and exciting. And this space-time distortion definitely fit the latter description.[break][break]

"What's happening, anyway?" he asked, peering up at the purple dome and the storm clouds brewing overhead. Lightning flashed and thunder boomed. "You ever been in one of these before?"

At first glance, Hoenn's desert was similar in nature to the Ultra Desert. Yet unlike that vast realm of mystery and danger, this one was familiar at an intrinsic level. Here, the laws of physics and sense still ruled.[break][break]

Perhaps that was what drew Frank to the desert on that particular day. Dressed like a tourist, he strolled through a ruined hallway. Crumbling murals flanked him on either side. Some distance away, his rented all-terrain vehicle waited, his driver enjoying the pleasures of air conditioning.[break][break]

"Take pictures of these and send them to @albrecht," Frank instructed his Rotom, Duke, who had possessed his phone. It floated closer to a mural, the clicking sound of a camera shutter filling the air as it obeyed its trainer's command.[break][break]

As Frank turned to proceed down the hallway, the air warped with a purple haze. Electricity crackled, and the sharp scent of ozone invaded his nostrils. The man whirled around, eyes wide with alarm. He had read accounts of space-time distortions, but he'd never been inside one before. How exciting![break][break]

And who was that? Frank squinted down what had been the corridor of a ruin but was now a lush, green landscape.[break][break]

"Memphis?" he called out, incredulous, upon recognizing the younger man.

"Do you want to come with me next time I go on one?" Frank offered as he scooped up the Pokéball with his new Wiglett. "I heard about this cool desert with ancient ruins that look like they have writing on them, or something."[break][break]

After his experience at the Border, he had no interest in returning to it.[break][break]

"That might be something more up your alley. We'd have to bring an escort who can take care of the strange Pokémon, like a Ranger, maybe."[break][break]

A Crawdaunt scuttled toward them along the sand. Queenie the Malamar dealt it an unexpected blow with a quick PLUCK, giving Frank the chance to throw another Pokéball.

Frank watched the woman, who called herself Xenon, take big gulps of water from a bottle and then cap it without offering him any. But any anger threatening to well up inside him was swept away by how suddenly she dove to the ground, then raced away.[break][break]

A short distance away, he spied a cluster of rocks that could feasibly service as a shelter.[break][break]

The sandstorm was almost upon them. He had no choice but to run after her. The other man, who had yet to introduce himself, ran alongside Frank. They ducked underneath the rocky outcropping just in time, as furious winds and skin-lacerating sand rushed past.[break][break]

Frank wiped the sweat from his brow with a scarf he'd brought with him, the kind used to protect oneself from sun in deserts.[break][break]

"I'm Frank," he introduced himself to the dark-haired man. Then, addressing both strangers stuck in the shelter with him, he asked, "What are you two doing out here?"

Frank listened as the ranger began spouting facts about Kakuna and Beedrill. The trivia came unprompted, but Frank nodded in understanding at Fox's explanation. Perhaps he posted Pokémon facts videos on social media or something.[break][break]

The quirk was no problem for Frank; he could work with any situation. "Oh, that's no problem. I actually didn't know that about Kakuna and Beedrill. I thought all bee-like Pokémon were the same."[break][break]

On the balcony, he watched as Fox went to work. His Spheal and Gloom made quick work of the Bug-types clinging to the building's exterior.[break][break]

"Are they going to be okay?" the silver-haired man asked. He leaned over the railing to peer down at the pupae scattered on the street below them.

Rocket bullshit. Frank frowned as best he could with a toothbrush in his mouth, but didn't say anything. Instead, he finished brushing his teeth while Damien got dressed. Standing in the small entryway of the hotel room, he accepted the paper and scanned the address.[break][break]

"Got it. Thank you," Frank said, putting the note down next to his wallet so he wouldn't forget it. "You stay safe, okay? I'll talk to you later."[break][break]
