The simulation began, dropping them into a world of ones and zeroes, falling letters and digits forming into a collective of black creatures: the Unown. While Kaname was unfamiliar with the location called “the Cloud”, he’d seen these alphabetic beings accompanying Head Scientist Naomi Sato before and heard they possessed strange powers when gathered in groups.[break][break]

“Unown…”, he muttered. Multiple collectives worth of Unown were present, if he had to guess. “Play it smart, people. We’ve been given the Unown. Each of those floating black letters or characters is an actual Pokémon. Individually, they’re not strong, but when they’re gathered together,” he paused to look between ana fell and Kouji Matsubara. “They’re capable of doing strange things. So it goes without saying, this many of them- let’s just say I’m willing to bet they’re at full power right now, and them being at full power is not a good thing for us.” [break][break]

It was the sudden materialization of their duplicates that made Kaname’s anxiety flare. He couldn’t tell if they were perfect, but they were accurate enough to leave him feeling uncanny. Kaname makes decisive, careful movements as he watches his duplicate mirror him. It even went as far as picking out the same Pokémon as him; now two Galarian Slowkings now staring each other down on the field. “I think we should exer-“ his thought is cut short as ana fell sucker punches her own copy. The lack of foresight and planning on the woman’s end makes his face turn sour. “Exercise some caution and follow my lead, please.” He asked, turning to look at his Galarian Slowking. “Use Rain Dance.” The Hexpert Pokemon lifted his hands and dark clouds began to gather over their area and rain began to pour down on them. It wasn’t ideal to create wet conditions, but he had a use for it.[break][break]

The copy, however, did not seem to mind the sudden rain and fired off an Eerie Spell at the opposing Slowking. The psychic move buffeted his Pokémon and weakened his ability to use Rain Dance, but was otherwise unperturbed by it. [break][break]

The addition of Nomi, Barnaby, Barnaby’s Starmie, and the unconscious, floating Megalopolan made the already small closet feel smaller. Kaname closed his eyes and took deep breaths, trying to fight off the burgeoning feeling of claustrophobia attempting to overcome him. The feeling of being trapped, like an animal in a cage, was overwhelming to the researcher; he felt shackled by the other bodies in the room, like they were going to drag him down into some abyss. [break][break]

The sensation of being trapped was almost too much for Kaname to handle. [break][break]

As he heard Nomi open the door, however, he felt a great sense of relief. He was quick to follow his superiors out of the closet and back into the open office lobby. “I agree, it’s definitely in our best interest to leave and come back more prepared.” [break][break]

The clarion call sounded, hordes of Pokemon were marching on the Castle City of Hammerlocke, led by a strange lavender-colored bird. Kaname quickly returned his Galarian Slowking after it had dispersed the creeping sludge with his Eerie Spell. The scientist hit the ground running, heading toward the nearby front barricade. [break][break]

He activated the earpiece and spoke. “Can we get a status update?! What’s going on? I’m headed to the front barricade.” He was winded as he approached the large barricade being bombarded by the claws of the large, armored bird. “Something has to give here…” he murmured, producing a pokeball and sending out his Swalot as he arrived at the scene winded shortly after a sonic boom shook the area as Josh Devlin sped off on his Zeraora, shrouded in crackling lightning. [break][break]

“Haradashi, Helping Hand that Lapras at once!” A decisive order followed by Kaname’s Swalot. As the Lapras prepared its song, the corpulent body of the Swalot giggled and wavered hoyously, as it shared energy with Julia Davis ’s Lapras, empowering her Resonance several times over.

Stepping through the portal, Kaname and his Swalot are whisked across space and arrive in Hammerlocke, near a broken pokemon center. He takes a quick moment to look around the city, drinking in the ruin and dilapidation. Sludge seeps across the city streets, strange hands grasp for nearby peasantry who are scattering or rushing behind makeshift barricades. The sight of it all is overwhelming, until Zev Harcourt’s voice cuts across the Rocket comms.[break][break]

“Understood, Ghost.” His reply was curt at best, a tinge of concern present in his voice. Work with the League? It wasn’t a bad idea, but how trustworthy were the League officials? How long would this pact hold out? Kaname’s mind spun with possibilities until the sound of a man screaming drew him back to reality. The sludge had encroached quickly and a purple hand was dragging a young man toward the oncoming flood. He quickly returned his Swalot to his pokeball, knowing the poison would be of little help here.[break][break]

Kanane quickly produced a purple colored pokeball and pressed the button, calling into existence the Hexpert Pokemon, his Galarian Slowking. “Douman, Eerie Spell.” The scientist ordered, directing his attention to the sludge hand grappling with a nearby peasant. The Galarian Slowking let out a throaty laugh and began to murmur, waves of strange energy bombarding the poisonous hand and surrounding sludge in an attempt break it up.[break][break]

With the final zombified Megalopolans disposed of or restrained, Kaname could finally breathe a sigh of relief. He glanced over the charred remains of the Megalopolans, and shook his head. “I am also curious to see what made them this way.” He said in concurrence with the Head Scientist. “I’m also very curious about the phenomena we experienced earlier, I can-”, he was cut off as Naomi alerted them to an ominous sound, the sound of a herd of pounding feet making their way through the upper level of the building.[break][break]

Shit. Shit. Shit.[break][break]

Kaname’s heart fluttered with panic against his rib cage. The sound was thunderous in comparison to the small group they had just faced. Kaname snapped back to reality as Zev followed Nomi’s suggestion and threw open the closet door, ordering them all inside. He quickly recalled the Wind Chime pokemon, to prevent her carillon body from giving them away and darted for the closet.[break][break]

The closet was the furthest thing from spacious, a small alcove with shelves and supplies that they were going to have to cram themselves in like a proverbial clown car. Kaname did his best to be conscious of the Rocket Beast’s position at the back of the closet, doing his best to press his thin body against the rightmost wall in an attempt to not crowd or other come into too much contact with Zev, who Kaname managed was very fond of his personal space. How everyone else planned to pack themselves in was not his concern.[break][break]

All that mattered was hiding.[break][break]

Spears of ice flew through the air as Calyrex succumbed to the unknown toxin within his body; a king fell to madness once again. Kaname and his Hatterene were not lucky enough to be spared his death throes, as a frozen spear shattered against the fairy type’s body, frost forming on her unconscious body.[break][break]

The scientist produced a pokeball and returned the unconscious Hatterene. “I’m sorry, Momiji.” He murmured, watching from a distance as the group fought and questioned the dying king. It was the final words of the king that rattled Kaname; was Calyrex asking them to create legends? Or was it the ramblings of a dying, mad king?[break][break]

Kaname watches the final blow be delivered and winces. “That was no way to die…” he whispered, as the white pistil withered away; but from death comes new life. Strange petals drop to the ground and blossom into strange windows to another place; clearly a rift or tear in the very world as people who went willingly or were swallowed by them vanished.[break][break]

He swallows hard, pulling a purple pokeball from his belt and unleashing a large purple pokemon. “Haradashi, use Stockpile before we go.” The Swalot inhaled, gathering energy and storing within its body. “Let’s go…” The Swalot nodded, his corpulent body jiggling as he followed Kaname into the portal leading to the castle city of Hammerlocke.[break][break]

The screen flickered and changed, a great white dragon… Kyurem appeared on screen. A creature of bone-chilling cold, the beast responsible for altering a small section of the Hoenn region into an icy waste. Kaname grimaced, the end result of dealing with legendary pokemon always seemed to be destruction or transformation. The forces they represented were always in flux. They were too dangerous to be trusted, too powerful to be controlled; and to make matters worse, there was so much they didn’t know. [break][break]

The screen shifted again, this time displaying a list of teams and their members. Kaname scanned the list and was relieved to find himself partnered with someone he knew, even if it was reckless Kouji Matsubara . “Glad to be paired with you too, Kouji.” He said with a nod, taking a bracelet and snapping the bracelet on his left wrist. Kaname trailed behind Kouji as he approached ana fell , and offered the woman a polite nod. “I’m Kaname, that’s Kouji. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” An introduction for the both of them would have to suffice. [break][break]

“I agree, it’s futile to plan ahead too much. After all, we could be up against any number of legendary pokemon. With that said though, we should establish what we’ve got. I’ve brought two pokemon that are fairly slow but capable of support and control, and one pokemon capable of mega-evolution with good offensive capabilities.” He paused and looked down at the bracelet. “I think team blank is a good idea. Any objections?” He looked toward ana fell , waiting for her response.[break][break]

“Better to be silent and know than to speak and know nothing.” He said, glancing from Hitoshi Inoue to Xenon Antheil as monitors flared to life. “Excuse me.” He said, dismissing himself as he approached a monitor, half listening to the conversations going on around him. [break][break]

What threats should be the highest priority? Kaname watched the legendaries roll by on the screen and shook his head. The real answer should’ve been all of the above, but he would have to settle for: C. The Threats Unknown. [break][break]

He steps out of the way of the monitor and quietly fiddles with the mega ring on his left wrist. “Wonder what everyone else has picked?” He murmured to himself.[break][break]

Snow and ice barreled down atop the protective barrier erected by Kaname’s Hatterene. “Hold out as long as you can!” And Hatterene held out for as long as she could, but the crushing weight of the snowfall was too much and it shattered her protective barrier. Snow swallowed the scientist and his pokemon in a white blanket of death; immobilized under the weight of the snow. Still clutching his pokeball, Kaname manages to press the button and recall the Hatterene, sparing her life.[break][break]

This, however, is where Kaname Fujihara believes he will die. Lost under the snow and ice. Whether he would die from the cold, the suffocation, or the crushing weight that did him in would be anyone’s guess. He would be forced to go quietly into the long night, unaware of what was going on around him.[break][break]

Unaware of the shield pulsing with a dark power as the world shifted and churned.[break][break]

He wakes suddenly on the snowy ground, in a foreign place; the Rocket comm in his ear full of chatter. [break][break]

They were in… Galar? How?[break][break]

He groans and slowly clamors to his feet, pulling Hatterene’s pokeball from the snow and releasing her for the second time. He grabbed his side and exhaled, a sharp pain shooting through it. “Probably broke a rib, great…” He glanced at his Hatterene, who also looked to be in pain. “Momiji, use Life Dew.” Hatterene waved her hand about, causing water droplets to coalesce over their bodies, soothing their aches and slowly mending their injuries. After a few moments, the water faded and he looked toward the Hatterene. “We need to go, staying in one place is a bad idea.” He began to trudge through the snow, toward the worn entrance of the courtyard.[break][break]

There was no time to waste as the swirling darkness encroached upon them. Kaname followed the group into the safety of the office building. He couldn’t help but wonder how safe the ramshackle building really was from the swirling darkness outside it.[break][break]

There was no time to relax, however, as the sound of multiple footfalls approached them. Was it another group investigating the rift or something else entirely? They didn’t have the luxury of time to figure it out, so better to be ready than caught completely off guard. Kaname pulled a pokeball from his belt and released a dainty Pokémon shaped like a wind chime as the group of Megalopolians came into view. [break][break]

Kaname recoiled at the sight of them. Their bodies were almost like a reflection of the building, dilapidated and decaying. The residents of this city had become something out of a horror movie. [break][break]

Without words, Zev’s shining Chandelure ignited one of the Megalopolians with an Inferno; its screams resounded throughout the building. There was little time to react as the rest of the group charged them, snapping their jaws viciously as they closed the gap. The Chimecho’s eyes suddenly glimmered as it used Psychic to send the charging Megalopolians flying back several feet with a pink wave of force. [break][break]

“Good work, Suzuhiko…” Kaname’s voice wavered and he could feel his heart beating in his throat. “I am suggesting that we make a retreat…”[break][break]

“What do you think happened here, or was this perhaps the always status quo for residents of this place?” A question Kaname posed to the group as by they pushed their way deeper toward the center of the city. “In some ways, it feels almost like a normal city… save for the overwhelming darkness and strange buildings.” It was an uncanny feeling, to imagine a place like this as once populated. [break][break]

What may have been a thriving city was now a husk of its former glory. [break][break]

Kaname pondered what the Unown might be seeing as they scouted ahead of the group. Their presence was a boon, certainly, but it also meant the window of possibility to impress his superiors was ever closer to closing. Kaname bit down on the inside of his lip, his hand now tightly squeezing the small flashlight. While there was no shortage of opportunities in Rocket, when would a perfect storm like this one ever arise again?[break][break]

He’d come all this way, all to pursue something only a chance at leaving his mark upon the world. To pursue his own goals. He couldn’t- no, he wouldn’t let this opportunity pass him by. Individually, these people he was with may be his superiors… but collectively, they could be the key to getting funding for his own research. Their word would go a lot further than his own.[break][break]

Kaname exhaled a profound sigh, trying to release some of the building tension. It wasn’t until Zev spoke that he was pulled back to reality. “Hm? Vending… machines…?” Kaname echoed confusedly, taking a step toward Zev and closer to the boxes when he heard that fell wind howl. Kaname turned his head toward its source and swallowed hard, a torrent of swirling darkness was moving toward them at an alarming pace.[break][break]

“We should move, and do it quickly!”[break][break]

The whole operation was overwhelming. Capture four legendary Pokémon? While fighting off the League? It was insane, it was madness. Yet, Kaname Fujihara was counted amongst the Team Rocket grunts present and accounted for this operation. Masked up and adrenaline pumping, he rushed onto the battlefield. [break][break]

Here be gods and monsters.[break][break]

A lithe feline and bulky canine clashed as voices warbled from his earpiece. “Got it.” A curt reply into the comms as he turned his focus on the legendaries. He scanned the area, taking in the scars upon the land and the rubble. It appeared the battle may have been going on for some time; if they were lucky maybe the shield-bearing dog, Zamazenta, and the icy feline will have tired themselves out some. However, there seemed to be no real sign of them slowing down.[break][break]

Overhead, a great green serpent roared with a fury so loud that it rattled Kaname’s bones. Another god joins the fray as an avalanche of snow and ice manifests overtop of the battlefield.[break][break]

There is little time to think, and no time for hesitation. The serpentine god exhaled gout after gout of flame into the oncoming ice and snow, but any remaining clumps would still be devastating to be struck by. [break][break]

Kaname pulled a dark sphere from his belt and the pressed button, releasing from her pokeball a lilac colored Hatterene close by. “Protect us!” The Hatterene obliges, grabbing the scientist with her singular hand and pulling him in closer as a spherical force field appears around them, hopefully absorbing the impact of crushing snowfall. [break][break]

There was a discontent building within Kaname as he quickly scrawled a few notes on his legal pad. He was watching a chemical reaction occur in real time, the two liquids he’d mixed together were bubbling violently and changing from a sickly green to a darker brown as precipitates formed along the bottom of the beaker.[break][break]

This was his life, for now. Run a few tests, make a few lab reports, and submit them for someone else to benefit from. This was not the life he wanted, but it was the life he had. So, he did his best to bury the discontent he felt and cautiously picked up a powder-filled test tube before dumping it into the dark brown solution.[break][break]

No reaction occurred. He scribbled a few more notes on the legal pad and sighed.[break][break]

The sound of the doors didn’t do much to gather his attention, after all people came and went all the time. However, that voice, so distant in his memory and yet so familiar, immediately captured his attention.[break][break]

“I- Mr. Cross?” He looked bemusedly at the man as stepped around the workbench and toward him. “Is everything okay?” He asked in a hushed voice, gesturing toward the mark on his face.[break][break]
