“The evaluation has already begun.” The hollow voice had announced that with a certainty that made Kaname glance about the packed auditorium, his eyes settling on several cameras placed about. “I wonder where they’re watching from?” He murmured to the Chimecho, who was bobbing up and down as if under the effect of some unseen wind.[break][break]

The voice of Xenon Antheil calling out to the group as she ascends the heavens like an Icarus atop her Iron Jugulis draws his attention. The woman’s outlandish remarks earn her a sneer from the researcher. First impressions were everything when trying to advance one’s standing, and Xenon Antheil came across as nothing more than a malcontented Lillipup. “A dog with no manners and no training is of no use to anyone,” he remarked under his breath as he turned from Xenon, and instead turned to watch one of the screens displaying the names and faces of the participants.[break][break]

A majority of the names and faces rolling across the monitor were unfamiliar to him, but there were a few faces he recognized, like Alba Evovae and Kouji Matsubara . If he had to be stuck with anyone, Kaname hoped it would be one of his colleagues that he could trust.[break][break]

Kaname crossed his arms and scanned the crowd, looking for those familiar faces he’d seen on the monitor. The first face he managed to pick out belonged to Kouji Matsubara , talking with another grunt he did not recognize. “Let’s go say hello to a friend, Suzuhiko.” He gestured softly for the Chimecho to join him as he began to slip through the crowd, toward Kouji Matsubara . “We’ll have to find Alba later.” [break][break]

A world of night, that’s what was laid out before them. Flickering, artificial lights littered the darkened city like the beckoning lure of a Lanturn. Black prism-like buildings jutted from the land like the teeth of some great, yawning beast. This world was just as alien, in its own way, as the Ultra Deep Sea had been. Kaname wondered about what they would find here, he also worried about the dangers that awaited them as they ventured through the city.[break][break]

“It’s almost eerily calm here.” He remarked softly, clutching a small flashlight in his right hand. He had intended to use it to lead the way, but Zev had beaten him to the punch by utilizing an oddly glowing Chandelure to light their advance.[break][break]

“I am fully in support of that, figuring out where we are and mapping out a little bit of the area is in our best interest. I’m not a cartographer, but even a rudimentary map or a collection of landmarks might be a good idea.” He suggested, glancing at his three fellow explorers to gauge their reactions to his idea. It was important that he start off on the right foot and show a little initiative, after all the members of his expedition were none other than a Rocket Beast, an Admin, and a Head Scientist. Impressing any one of them might mean that he could be one step closer to his goals.[break][break]

Kaname should’ve been done, but the prospect of one more pokemon didn’t seem so bad. Especially since it was a Butterfree; he knew that the bug/flying type could learn useful moves, like Sleep Powder, and that made it valuable for research purposes. “Orbeetle, use hypnosis on the Butterfree.”[break][break]

The seven spots on his Orbeetle’s elytra flashed in an incomprehensible pattern as it broadcast a simple psychic suggestion to the Butterfree: sleep. Kaname could tell that the butterfly pokemon was doing his best to resist the subliminal suggestion, but it was no match for the might of Kaname’s Orbeetle. Butterfree eventually drifted to the ground and lost itself to sleep; giving Kaname the chance to hurl a pokeball at it in an attempt to catch it.[break][break]

Route 116, a humble little grassy place between Rustboro City and Rusturf Tunnel. It was also the perfect place for Kaname to do a little field research, due to the overwhelming populations of Psychic and Normal types within the area. Kaname felt it was a good idea to have a study supply of specimens ready for his pet project, if it ever took off.[break][break]

That was the thing, there was no guarantee that anyone in Team Rocket would find his research a worthwhile pursuit. The thought of never getting the chance to pursue his passion project churned his stomach, but he'd have to shove those thoughts back down and focus on the task at hand. After all, these pokemon weren't going to catch themselves.[break][break]

The researcher waded through the tall grass, accompanied by a rather elated looking Chimecho. The Wind Chime pokemon brushed her tail against Kaname’s shoulder and chirped softly. “Yes, yes. I know you’re enjoying the nice day. It’s not often we get to escape the confines of the lab, is it Suzuhiko?” Suzuhiko chirped loudly in response, which earned her a soft smile from Kaname. “I’ll try my best to make sure we get to go on more strolls, okay?”[break][break]

Kaname stared out towards the dark horizon, the specter of that massive Xurkitree they had seen lurking out there both intrigued and unnerved him. He turned his attention on the abandoned building that loomed over them, a dilapidated power station with a dimly flashing neon sign that seemed to beckon them inside. He glanced up at the dark sky, watching a streak of lightning pierce through the sky. “Feels like it’s about to rain…,” he murmured to himself, turning his attention to Naomi Sato .[break][break]

“Agreed, let’s head inside.” He said curtly, motioning to Ikkyu, his Medicham, to take point near the door. “Is bringing this station back online a good idea though? What if the surge of electricity attracts something we don’t want to deal with?” His voice wavered as he looked toward his superior, hoping for a reassuring reply from Nomi.[break][break]

His experiences in the Ultra Deep Sea during the Seal Stone operation had left him unnerved. The very environment there seemed to reject him, would the Ultra Power Plant do the same? What sort of strange phenomena waited for them here, would there be more of these “paradox” pokemon he’d been hearing about? There were too many variables for Kaname to not be worried sick about it all.[break][break]

Kaname nodded to himself confidently, smirking as the head scientist said he was on the right track. Recognition from a superior was something he craved, so of course he ate it up. His smile quickly faded however as Oscar imparted the fact that they had nothing to cast the resistors with.

Kaname stared at the silent Oscar, anxiously expecting him to say something, anything. After all, he may have had a good idea but this was far from his field of expertise. “Sur-,” he jumped as the head scientist suddenly clapped his hands together. “Are you sure that’s wise?” His voice tense as he watched Oscar rush over to a workbench and begin carving away at that black slab.

Kaname watched with a mix of awe and anxiety. Oscar Clayton was like him, but also not like him. He was so much more flexible with his work, Kaname envied that. The lack of a plan, the winging it… the lack of control over a situation. It didn’t sit right with him; after all, science was about controlled experimentation. But him? He didn’t seem to care, instead he just looked for and tested solutions; he was pushing past the obstacles. Maybe Oscar Clayton was not like him at all.

Kaname snapped back to reality as Oscar spoke. The would-be researcher feigned a smile back and nodded. “Yeah, character…,” he trailed off, watching Oscar run back to the forge. Kaname’s eyes went wide as the man turned around, a bowl of molten metal resting in a set of tongs pointed directly at him. “I- yes! Just one second!” Kaname did a little running of his own, grabbing a set of nearby forge mittens and pulling them as quickly as he could.

“Alright! Ready when you are.” Even if he didn’t necessarily believe this wild idea was the best course of action, he had a duty to support it as the Oscar’s assistant. So he looked resolutely at the head scientist, steadying the graphite mold against the workbench; ready for him to begin pouring the liquid metal into the resistor mold.

“A little overtime is good for us both. I’ve got plenty of samples to spin down…” His face dropped at the prospect of standing in front of a centrifuge for an hour, spinning down samples and checking them for particulates. However, it was too late to change his mind, his dear colleague had already agreed to his idea.[break][break]

“As to what we’ll find? I’m theorizing that it's likely mechanical or pokemon in origin. If it is truly pokemon based, let’s hope that it’s managable.” Of all the things Kaname did not want to deal with, it was fighting a pokemon while aboard an underwear vessel. Any resulting fight would likely just get very messy and/or out of control far too quickly. “Though, any serious mechanical errors could also lead to our deaths…”[break][break]

“That said though, what’s your hypothesis? I’m interested to hear what you think, given that we have such little information.” There was a genuine curiosity in his voice as swiped his badge across the reader, opening the door to the lab for them both. “After you, sir.” He gestured with his free hand for Alba to go ahead of him. [break][break]
