A RUINED CITY IN ULTRA SPACE. It is unclear whether this is a different universe's Ultra Megalopolis or smaller colony. Regardless, it is a dark city with intermittent sections of flickering, artificial light... Large, black prism-like skyscrapers loom above flat black streets. Much ruin has fallen here, but you get the sense that you're not alone...

When fern delaney's primal crystal shard finally unveiled a rift to another world, Zev was one of the first to sign up. Continued rest following his injury left him restless. Compounded by his unending desire for dangerous thrills, it was enough to drive him insane. He could think of no better release than exploring an unknown world.[break][break]

On the other side of the rift was darkness. The scant pockets of illuminating light, artificial in nature, did little to lessen it. All around him, black, prism-like structures towered overhead. Sleek and alien, they stood inert like silent sentinels.[break][break]

Yet despite their stillness, they reminded Zev of something dangerous. Something lying in wait.[break][break]

The artificial lights were not enough to see by. The Beast released his Chandelure, the Pokémon's natural illumination casting a soft, purplish light upon the immediate area. Then Zev turned to his companions.[break][break]

"Since this is our first foray, let's get a lay of the land first. We can return later to establish some kind of base camp," he suggested.

A world of night, that’s what was laid out before them. Flickering, artificial lights littered the darkened city like the beckoning lure of a Lanturn. Black prism-like buildings jutted from the land like the teeth of some great, yawning beast. This world was just as alien, in its own way, as the Ultra Deep Sea had been. Kaname wondered about what they would find here, he also worried about the dangers that awaited them as they ventured through the city.[break][break]

“It’s almost eerily calm here.” He remarked softly, clutching a small flashlight in his right hand. He had intended to use it to lead the way, but Zev had beaten him to the punch by utilizing an oddly glowing Chandelure to light their advance.[break][break]

“I am fully in support of that, figuring out where we are and mapping out a little bit of the area is in our best interest. I’m not a cartographer, but even a rudimentary map or a collection of landmarks might be a good idea.” He suggested, glancing at his three fellow explorers to gauge their reactions to his idea. It was important that he start off on the right foot and show a little initiative, after all the members of his expedition were none other than a Rocket Beast, an Admin, and a Head Scientist. Impressing any one of them might mean that he could be one step closer to his goals.[break][break]

Welcome to the damn abyss.[break][break]

BARNABY FINCH stepped out from the rift with his eyes peeled for threats. This world was completely uncharted, after all, with only rumors of it being a Megalopolan stronghold turned desolate crypt. What awaited him was not an aggressive alien force, however, but simply...[break][break]

Darkness.[break][break]

Barely lit in flickering, scant patches. Too dark to traverse efficiently. Zev Harcourt had the right idea with his Illumina CHANDELURE, so Barnaby released one of his own Illumina Pokémon as well. The STARMIE's violet gem shone brightly, keeping the void-like shadows at bay.[break][break]

"Agreed." The ROCKET admin confirmed, his eyes scanning over their group. Kaname Fujihara was given an approving nod, while Naomi Sato was fixed with an important question:[break][break]

"Did you bring any sort of measurement or recording devices?" Theirs was one of the first trips into this place. Best to gather as much information as possible.

Dressed all in black, Naomi Sato's pastel pink hair was the only thing noticeable about the young woman as she entered into the realm of darkness that was LESSER MEGALOPOLIS. Beside her, Valerian glowed with a faint blue light, his ILLUMINA nature coming in handy. Joining together with BARNABY FINCH's illumina Starmie and Zev Harcourt's illumina Chandelure, the small party of Rockets had enough light to begin safely traversing the land.[break][break]
Midnight prisms taller than the tallest Slateport skyscrapers loomed in the distance, like ruinous sentinels keeping watch over the endless void before them. Nomi was momentarily captivated by them; they were rather terrifying, but in a beautiful way. Not unlike Cillian Quinn's shadow miasma.[break][break]
"Of course," Nomi replied, flashing Barnaby a confident smile, her crimson eyes sparkling with a mischief she knew the Admin would appreciate. Digital devices were not guaranteed to work in the rifts; they were especially unreliable in space-time distortions. However, Nomi had ways around that.[break][break]
The Head Scientist took two Pokeballs from her belt and released a pair of UNOWN. The Unown-A and Unown-N bobbed up and down in the air, eagerly awaiting instruction. Their singular eyes were fixated on Nomi.[break][break]
"Scout ahead," she commanded of them. "Record everything you see."[break][break]
They floated into the shadows beyond the light of the illumina Pokemon, their symbols fading eerily into nothingness.[break][break]
"Let's follow carefully behind. If they see anything noteworthy or dangerous, they will return to me immediately."[break][break]
She had worked hard to earn the trust of these Unown and had full faith in their bond.

With three Illumina Pokémon lighting the way and Nomi's Unown making recordings, the group proceeded deeper into the heart of the alien city. Despite the strangeness of the realm, Zev found himself surprised that some aspects of it were familiar. For example, they appeared to be walking along a street, the prism-like buildings situated on either side.[break][break]

They passed through an area lit by artificial light. Clearly, the original builders of the city had electricity, though Zev could not see any outlets or cables. A couple of large, box-like machines stood to the side of the boulevard, their insides still lit and filled with metal cylinders. Scattered on the ground around them were small shards that gleamed in the light.[break][break]

"Vending machines?" Zev wondered aloud, approaching the boxes with a furrowed brow.[break][break]

But before he could reach them, a gust of wind blew through the street with enough strength to push some of the shards across the ground. Its howl was ominous and otherworldly. Peering down the street, Zev saw something impossible.[break][break]

Sheer darkness, whirling like a wild cyclone, filled the entire width space between the buildings. All the light around it seemed drawn into it, yanked out of their machines that darkened instantly.[break][break]

And it was fast approaching.

“What do you think happened here, or was this perhaps the always status quo for residents of this place?” A question Kaname posed to the group as by they pushed their way deeper toward the center of the city. “In some ways, it feels almost like a normal city… save for the overwhelming darkness and strange buildings.” It was an uncanny feeling, to imagine a place like this as once populated. [break][break]

What may have been a thriving city was now a husk of its former glory. [break][break]

Kaname pondered what the Unown might be seeing as they scouted ahead of the group. Their presence was a boon, certainly, but it also meant the window of possibility to impress his superiors was ever closer to closing. Kaname bit down on the inside of his lip, his hand now tightly squeezing the small flashlight. While there was no shortage of opportunities in Rocket, when would a perfect storm like this one ever arise again?[break][break]

He’d come all this way, all to pursue something only a chance at leaving his mark upon the world. To pursue his own goals. He couldn’t- no, he wouldn’t let this opportunity pass him by. Individually, these people he was with may be his superiors… but collectively, they could be the key to getting funding for his own research. Their word would go a lot further than his own.[break][break]

Kaname exhaled a profound sigh, trying to release some of the building tension. It wasn’t until Zev spoke that he was pulled back to reality. “Hm? Vending… machines…?” Kaname echoed confusedly, taking a step toward Zev and closer to the boxes when he heard that fell wind howl. Kaname turned his head toward its source and swallowed hard, a torrent of swirling darkness was moving toward them at an alarming pace.[break][break]

“We should move, and do it quickly!”[break][break]

The pervasive darkness all around them was unsettling at best, menacing at worst. As Barnaby observed the dilapidated city they traveled through, the narrow scope of view of what he could see made him lean toward the latter. [break][break]

There was a reason for this unnatural blackout. Something powerful had driven the residents of Lesser Megalopolis out of their homes. Seeing all the darkened crystals about, the ROCKET admin had a hunch…[break][break]

“It’s too soon to tell,” Barnaby replied, sweeping his eyes over to Kaname Fujihara. “Let’s focus on collecting as much evidence as possible for now.”[break][break]

Right about then the lights on the vending machine Zev Harcourt pointed out began to flicker and then… die. A roiling darkness appeared from the gloom, somehow blacker and more sinister than its surroundings – a void of pure shadow. Shit.[break][break]

“In here.” Barnaby ordered the group, sprinting toward a nearby multi-story office building. It was a split second decision, but he figured any sort of cover was better than staying outside with the unnatural darkness.[break][break]

He burst through the double doors in the lobby of the building and into a labyrinthian space filled with crumbling bullpens and defunct computers. Out of one darkness and into another.[break][break]
As BARNABY FINCH ushered the small group of Rockets into the first floor of a dilapidated skyscraper - what might have once been some sort of office building or trade center - Nomi felt an ominous foreboding that had nothing to do with the lack of light. Resisting the urge to immediately begin poking and prodding around the space - what if there was something to be salvaged from one of those inoperable computers? - Nomi hunkered down with her companions and waited.[break][break]
She heard it too. Shuffling. The sound of something approaching, its footfalls erratic.[break][break]
Quiet. They needed to be quiet ...[break][break]
A humanoid figure stumbled towards them. Then another. And another. Nomi counted four shadowy people dragging themselves towards the Rockets as if drawn by magnets. They looked human, but ... something was off. Something was very off.[break][break]
Valerian growled low in the back of his throat. Close enough now for the glow of the illumina Pokémon to reveal exactly what they were, Nomi nearly gasped out loud as she drank in the simultaneously horrifying and fascinating sight: Megalopolians. Except their flesh was loose, the normally pale blue hue even paler than usual - decaying. Their hair was falling out, their fingernails long and dirtied, their gaping mouths like miniature black holes. Where there eyes should have been, there were merely empty sockets.[break][break]
The scene was like something out of a horror movie. Nomi instinctively backed up, Valerian putting himself between her and the monsters. Through the fear, however, her curiosity piqued. Perhaps they could still communicate? Perhaps they still had memories of this place - of what it used to be like before whatever destruction it had suffered.[break][break]
"Leave one alive," she murmured to Zev Harcourt, knowing the man would not hesitate to destroy whatever might threaten them. "We can capture it and bring it back for study."[break][break]
She glanced at Kaname Fujihara. What would he do? She was keen to learn what the newest Rocket in their group was capable of.

Zev needed no further prompting from Bee. He raced into the building after the admin, the darkness in the street whipping at his clothing before he ducked into safety.[break][break]

Until, of course, the strange creatures approached. At first, it was difficult to tell if they were Pokémon or human. But the light of the group's Illumina Pokémon revealed something worse: Megalopolans, neither fully living nor fully dead.[break][break]

Without taking his eyes off the shambling, twitching aliens, Zev nodded at Nomi. Of course the Head Scientist would want to capture one for study. He gestured to his Chandelure, who recognized the command and obeyed.[break][break]

An INFERNO lit up one of the Megalopolans, engulfing it in flames. Its wordless, bloodcurdling screech filled the entire office.[break][break]

The rest of them charged at the group, screaming, pointed teeth gnashing violently.

There was no time to waste as the swirling darkness encroached upon them. Kaname followed the group into the safety of the office building. He couldn’t help but wonder how safe the ramshackle building really was from the swirling darkness outside it.[break][break]

There was no time to relax, however, as the sound of multiple footfalls approached them. Was it another group investigating the rift or something else entirely? They didn’t have the luxury of time to figure it out, so better to be ready than caught completely off guard. Kaname pulled a pokeball from his belt and released a dainty Pokémon shaped like a wind chime as the group of Megalopolians came into view. [break][break]

Kaname recoiled at the sight of them. Their bodies were almost like a reflection of the building, dilapidated and decaying. The residents of this city had become something out of a horror movie. [break][break]

Without words, Zev’s shining Chandelure ignited one of the Megalopolians with an Inferno; its screams resounded throughout the building. There was little time to react as the rest of the group charged them, snapping their jaws viciously as they closed the gap. The Chimecho’s eyes suddenly glimmered as it used Psychic to send the charging Megalopolians flying back several feet with a pink wave of force. [break][break]

“Good work, Suzuhiko…” Kaname’s voice wavered and he could feel his heart beating in his throat. “I am suggesting that we make a retreat…”[break][break]

From one fox den and into another. They'd barely avoided being engulfed by otherworldly shadows, only to scurry into a nest of... fuck, were those zombies? Really? [break][break]

Zev Harcourt engaged them first, followed quickly by Kaname Fujihara. Barnaby observed for a moment longer, mentally parsing through strategies. Light in this world was minimal at best and regularly being absorbed, if the vending machine outside had been any indication. Perhaps this scarcity could be used to their advantage.[break][break]

Two succinct whistles indicated for the admin's Illumina STARMIE to use SPOTLIGHT; he gestured to a congregation point, hoping the feral Megalopolans would follow the light and leave them more vulnerable to attack.[break][break]

It worked. The majority were left to smolder on the derelict tile, while one lucky individual had simply been knocked unconscious by the force of the pushback from CHIMECHO's PSYCHIC.[break][break]

"We'll take that one with us." Like hell he was carrying a half-rotten creature himself, though. STARMIE's own PSYCHIC would do the heavy lifting for him, raising the Megalopolan from the floor and levitating it closer to the group.

Nomi watched with approval as the men took care of the zombies. Clever BARNABY FINCH with his SPOTLIGHT diversion tactic created the perfect opening for Zev Harcourt's and Kaname Fujihara's Pokémon to eviscerate the majority of the walking horrors. Nomi had not needed to raise even a finger in aid; not that she minded doing battle, but it was certainly nice to have such efficient companions at her disposal.[break][break]
When Barnaby was able to secure the only remaining undead Megalopolian via his Starmie, Nomi beamed at him. "Well done! There's so much I want to learn - what made them this way? Are they able to properly communicate? What would happen if we infused them with Tera energy?" Her mind was already conjuring up several experiments they could run as soon as they returned to the Rocket labs.[break][break]
A loud crash suddenly jolted Nomi's attention back to their surroundings. Then a thundering sound...coming from above. As if many, many feet were shuffling quickly across the upper floor of the dilapidated office building. Were they heading towards the stairs? Or, Arceus forbid, a hole in the ceiling big enough to drop through. She glanced up...[break][break]
Sure enough, on the other side of the room they were currently in, there was a gaping hole in the ceiling. Wreathed in shadows, it was hard to see exactly how big it was, but the sounds of movement seemed to be heading right towards it.[break][break]
"Another hoard," she hissed, pointing. "A lot more from the sound of it."[break][break]
Frantically, she looked around the room. A utility closet! It would be cramped but...[break][break]
"Return the illumina Pokemon," she ordered. "Get rid of all the light. We need to hide in that closet." Taking out a Pokeball, she returned Valerian before he could offer any protest, then sprinted towards the closet. They would be forced to leave behind their captured zombie for the time being, but it was better than getting eaten alive...[break][break]

A silence fell over the office as the last of the zombie-like Megalopolans fell to the floor, destroyed. Bee's Starmie held aloft the one that remained alive.[break][break]

Zev turned away, uninterested in Nomi's chatter. Whatever information the Head Scientist could glean from the body might be useful, but he'd only pay attention when that information came to his email in the form of a report.[break][break]

The Beast was about to suggest leaving when the thunderous sound of countless feet filled the air. Another horde. And from the sound of it, too many for them to fight off in such cramped quarters.[break][break]

Zev needed no further urging from Nomi. He recalled his Chandelure and retreated to the closet. "Everyone inside, now," he hissed as he threw open the door.[break][break]

It was narrow and cramped, full of dusty shelves and unused equipment. They would have to squeeze close together if they were all going to fit with a fifth, unconscious body. Suppressing a grimace, Zev made his way to the very back of the closet. He pressed his broad back and shoulders against the far wall to make as much room for the others as possible.

With the final zombified Megalopolans disposed of or restrained, Kaname could finally breathe a sigh of relief. He glanced over the charred remains of the Megalopolans, and shook his head. “I am also curious to see what made them this way.” He said in concurrence with the Head Scientist. “I’m also very curious about the phenomena we experienced earlier, I can-”, he was cut off as Naomi alerted them to an ominous sound, the sound of a herd of pounding feet making their way through the upper level of the building.[break][break]

Shit. Shit. Shit.[break][break]

Kaname’s heart fluttered with panic against his rib cage. The sound was thunderous in comparison to the small group they had just faced. Kaname snapped back to reality as Zev followed Nomi’s suggestion and threw open the closet door, ordering them all inside. He quickly recalled the Wind Chime pokemon, to prevent her carillon body from giving them away and darted for the closet.[break][break]

The closet was the furthest thing from spacious, a small alcove with shelves and supplies that they were going to have to cram themselves in like a proverbial clown car. Kaname did his best to be conscious of the Rocket Beast’s position at the back of the closet, doing his best to press his thin body against the rightmost wall in an attempt to not crowd or other come into too much contact with Zev, who Kaname managed was very fond of his personal space. How everyone else planned to pack themselves in was not his concern.[break][break]

All that mattered was hiding.[break][break]
