Cyg hadn’t been there for the Cloud, so she’d missed out on a fair portion of the Hoenn Weirdness of the last year or so. She’d also had remarkably little interaction with Unown besides the occasional little floating eyeball popping up in her gacha pulls.

She kept her hands in her pockets as she listened to the spiel: kill or be killed, you won’t actually get hurt but you’ll feel it.

“Hah, like I’ll feel anything over these dru-- ahem.”
[break][break]
Had to keep it light. Stopped her from thinking about their examiners, which just pissed her off for a multitude of reasons.

And lo, two child soldiers and a mechanic walked into the digital valley of the shadow of death.
[break][break]
“Right, okay. Anyone in the mood for alphabet soup?” she asked, her Dusknoir bubbling out in a cloud of smoke to appear at her backside. She turns in a small circle, trying to decide what target to zap first--

--and freezes when she finds herself… looking into a mirror?

She squints.

“Arceus on a cracker, I look so tired,” she says, frowning. “Couldn’t they at least evened my skintone?”

The digital-her was a little fuzzy at the edges, and occasionally a stray pixel would blink black or blue for a moment, but otherwise, it was an exact copy.

“Over-under on if we hurt our copies, we hurt ourselves?”
[break][break]
She rolled up her sleeves.

“'Cause I’ve wanted to do this for a long time.”

And she suckerpunched herself in the face.

The simulation began, dropping them into a world of ones and zeroes, falling letters and digits forming into a collective of black creatures: the Unown. While Kaname was unfamiliar with the location called “the Cloud”, he’d seen these alphabetic beings accompanying Head Scientist Naomi Sato before and heard they possessed strange powers when gathered in groups.[break][break]

“Unown…”, he muttered. Multiple collectives worth of Unown were present, if he had to guess. “Play it smart, people. We’ve been given the Unown. Each of those floating black letters or characters is an actual Pokémon. Individually, they’re not strong, but when they’re gathered together,” he paused to look between ana fell and Kouji Matsubara. “They’re capable of doing strange things. So it goes without saying, this many of them- let’s just say I’m willing to bet they’re at full power right now, and them being at full power is not a good thing for us.” [break][break]

It was the sudden materialization of their duplicates that made Kaname’s anxiety flare. He couldn’t tell if they were perfect, but they were accurate enough to leave him feeling uncanny. Kaname makes decisive, careful movements as he watches his duplicate mirror him. It even went as far as picking out the same Pokémon as him; now two Galarian Slowkings now staring each other down on the field. “I think we should exer-“ his thought is cut short as ana fell sucker punches her own copy. The lack of foresight and planning on the woman’s end makes his face turn sour. “Exercise some caution and follow my lead, please.” He asked, turning to look at his Galarian Slowking. “Use Rain Dance.” The Hexpert Pokemon lifted his hands and dark clouds began to gather over their area and rain began to pour down on them. It wasn’t ideal to create wet conditions, but he had a use for it.[break][break]

The copy, however, did not seem to mind the sudden rain and fired off an Eerie Spell at the opposing Slowking. The psychic move buffeted his Pokémon and weakened his ability to use Rain Dance, but was otherwise unperturbed by it. [break][break]

Kouji felt the change in environment before he saw it; the tight feeling was replaced with a breeze, the stale air was replaced with artificial island air which filled his lungs before he opened his eyes. Gold eyes took in a world of numbers, there was no way this feeling could be associated with that sight.

”The hell is this?”

Reflections of self, his mind went over their instructions; barely paid attention to them, barely noted them, he just knew that these pokemon, Unown, needed to be brought down.
[break][break]
A collective, Kouji couldn’t understand the reasons why they were paired up against them, but all the same, an enemy across from him was one to be beaten. Just that small acknowledgement was enough for him to smirk.
[break][break]
The excitement flowed through him at a rapid pace, it excited his mind. ”Under.”
[break][break]
The call to caution went unnoticed as he charged forward, his leading hand formed into a fist, and the one in the rear held a pokeball, the one for his Meowscarada. As if hiding the approach of his pokemon for a singular moment, but it was his copy.

Like a mirror, he was struck as he struck, his pokemon came out as their pokemon came out, flower gift met flower gift.
[break][break]
He was forced back, forced to hold his face, his reddening cheeks felt as if they were beating to the drum of a song he knew not. ”Hey, hey, this is weird as hell. Meowscarada, how about we avoid this guy, and aim for the weird looking pokemon.”
[break][break]
Kouji directed his pokemon as he went to rush his copy; but at the same time, there was something he hadn’t thought about, a thoughtlessness that came into being from seeing the him and the meowscarada across from him as mere enemies, instead of copies. The attack aimed at the unown was averted as the fake Meowscarada swapped with his own, and then switched with himself.

”Switch back.” Thinking things through wasn’t his greatest strength, so what had been a singularly confusing situation continued to grow more so, switching of pokemon, and then the switching of the Other Meowscarada’s allies, the Unown into the mix, and soon enough; those pokemon themselves joined in.

A collective, they were one, and yet they were seperate, words like that were lost on the Rocket Grunt as the area grew brighter and brighter for a moment before suddenly, his surroundings were switched, stuck with just his copy, in a distant place, away from his allies.

”Shit, what the hell happened?”
[break][break]
Were they suffering the same fate?
[break][break]
Only the succor was that it still rained, even in this strange space, he couldn’t have been that far.

It was a strange sort of ambiance, like if Cyg listened hard enough she’d hear the quiet clicking of numbers and letters streaming in electric, binary waterfalls through the shocking-blue miasma of the background. Sort of like when you’re sitting quietly at home and you suddenly recognize the whirring of your laptop fan or the gentle, high-pitched hum of your TV screen.

Still, her double feels real enough, as her knuckles connect with her own face, the glee that sluices down her arms using her skeletal structure as an emotional superhighway to power the manic grin that cuts across her face.

One of the Children-- Cygne has come to refer to them as thus because it endears them to her in a way that safeguards against her not giving a shit about them-- has the gall to lecture her on her lack of restraint, and she snorts a derisive laugh. “But that’s boring, dad,” she shoots back, voice canting up into a joking whine as she continues the pursuit of her double, heavy gray clouds of rain gathering above their heads.

The rain begins to pelt down as warping sounds displace Kouji Matsubara, switching him and his Meowscarada up with his doubles and immediately putting everyone at a disadvantage because now they couldn’t tell who was who. “Ah, Arceus,” Cyg says, and she shifts back closer to Kaname Fujihara.
[break][break]

“Zen, thunder punch,” she says, and her Dusknoir disperses into a dark cloud of smoke, flows around her like liquid, and emerges on the other side, driving a crackling fist into the stomach of her double. The rain dance from Kaname’s Slowking having soggified their enemies, sparks of electricity jump from the twitching, shifting body of digital!Cyg and leap in arcs to the Unown around her, zapping the little letters and sending them flying away smoking and squealing.

“What’s the plan, then, Prowl?” Cyg asked, looking over her shoulder at the dark-haired man as a projectile launched out of the gloom-- a dark pulse shot by a digital Dusknoir, heading straight for them.

Ones and zeroes, letters and numbers. They flickered about the space disorientingly; like the vengeance of a computer scientist come to life. He couldn’t help but wonder if all the simulations looked somewhat like this, or if the other groups had been given their own unique playing fields with their own unique obstacles? Probably the latter, if he had to guess. [break][break]

The challenges their group were facing required ingenuity, outside the box thinking, after all they were facing themselves and the Unown… and yet, Kaname’s two teammates went right for the throat instead of using careful foresight and planning. The mere fact they’d barreled in head first grated on Kaname, who now felt like he had to grasp the reins tighter and guide these wild steeds. Kouji Matsubara would be easy enough to wrangle, but ana fell ? He knew nothing about how to guide her toward his goals; he was just going to have to fly blind.[break][break]

His thoughts were cut short as ana fell ’s feigned whine and words hit him like a slap in the face. Kaname bit the inside of his lip, restraining his instinct to snap back. “Focus please,” was his only request; a simple reply in a strained voice as the rain began to pour from the heavens. “Kouji-”, he began but was interrupted by the sound of Kouji Matsubara and his pokemon being displaced in space by the powers of the Unown. “Fuck.”[break][break]

Kaname looked between his own and ana fell ’s double as a Thunder Punch struck the digital copy of the woman, the electricity arcing off of the double and zapping a few nearby Unown. He inhaled sharply as Cygne closed in next to and spoke.[break][break]

“The plan is- Ōdokuro, use Eerie Spell now!” The Galarian Slowking whipped his head toward the projectile and murmured softly, strange waves of power crashing against the Dark Pulse with explosive results. “The plan is for us to coordinate and take down our doubles quickly, then we pick off the Unown one at a time.” He sounded sure, and was ready to enact his idea as there was another popping noise and he was whisked by the Unown, separated like Kouji was. “God damn it!” He shouted at the floating characters, whose eyes peered down at him with what he would call disdain. There was a rage boiling inside him as the reins were starting to slip from his fingers.[break][break]

Inconveniencing his allies had never been his attempt; but he had started the switcheroo, and now they would be forced to battle on their own, against an enemy that stood in front of them; an enemy that was him.

It wasn’t the first time he saw a copy of himself, but this was more exact, a copy that stood in the same way he did; swayed as he did, and he couldn’t imagine how to break through, did he know his own weaknesses?
[break]
No.
[break]
He had never really looked at how to break down his own battling style, flower gift was matched by another flower gift, ally switch was protected, and attacks danced in tandem, completely synchronised.
[break]
They were equal, even, one.
[break]
But he was human, this was a mirror; he could see Meowscarada growing more and more tired until the moment in which he grabbed the Meowscarada’s pokeball and recalled it right at the moment in which a flower gift landed at the place it where she had been, and instead called up Absol.
[break]
But the pokemon in front changed, and began to match Absol, it was a mirror copy, but then came the problem ahead of them, a strange sound, and the letter like pokemon began to swirl around them.

”We might be screwed here buddy.” He said with a difficult expression on his face.

NOTES

-Kouji tries to adjust to the new location, but is quickly thrown back into the battle; other!kouji and his pokemon match his move for moves, tactics seem to be the same, stalemate happens, and Meowscarada tires quickly.[break]
-He switches Meowscarada for Absol, but at that moment Unown begin to surround them.

The way the Unown moved, Cyg felt like she was seeing those little silver flecks that danced across her vision whenever she stood up too fast.

“One at a time?” Cyg said, incredulous. “That’ll take forever. There’s hundreds of ‘em.” She turned to give Kaname a look and then, bloop, he was gone. “Motherfucker.”

Okay. Okay. Okay. This had just gone from bad to worse. The first step: regroup.

She recalled Zen and released the Jugulis, as always reverting to the classic Cygne strategy of hit it really hard. Jumping onto Sima’s back, she directed the mecha dragon forward. They slashed through the copy of herself with an air slash, carving a path through the flickering Unown as they went, sending them spinning off and bursting into digital sparks.

With a squeeze of her knees, Sima dropped low over Kouji’s double, and Cyg grabbed the dragon’s wings, dangled, and caught not!Kouji’s head between her thighs as they passed. With a quick twist of her hips, the double exploded into a pile of data, streaming off into the rest of the illusion, and Cyg dropped to her hands and knees.

“Always wanted to do that,” she informed actual!Kouji, as Sima spat dragon breath at the fake Absol, catching a number of Unown in the blast. “C’mon, we need to find the brains of the operation, and take out as many of these things as we can along the way.”

“Use Surf, Odokuro.” The Galarian Slowking wicked smiled as it gathered a mass of water into a large wave and brought it down on the scientist’s double, catching a few Unown in the process. “Again, but harder.” More water was gathered and another large wave was made to crash down on the not!Kaname and his not!Galarian Slowking; the power of Surf had been increased thanks to the ongoing rain he had created earlier. Seeing his double and their pokemon thrown around by the waves of water made him smile a little; turns out schadenfreude was the perfect cure for one’s frustration. [break][break]

Kaname walked over to his prone double and stared at him. “You may look like me, even act like me to some degree… but you’re ultimately data, so you don’t have that real drive…,” he said, recalling the Galarian Slowking and releasing his Medicham. “Finish off the Slowking fir-”, his order was cut short as several Unown danced around Kaname and his Medicham. Their singular eyes were glowing as bricks began to materialize in layers around the scientist and his Medicham at a rapid pace, trapping them inside a tightly confined cylinder. [break][break]

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me!” He slammed a hand against the brick in frustration. The Unown acted in accordance with their nature, which is to say they were being their inscrutable selves. “I could use some help here!” He shouted upward, out the hole that the floating alphabet soup had kindly left him. He considered momentarily having the Medicham use Close Combat to smash through the bricks, but Kaname was concerned that it would cause the whole cylinder to collapse down on top of them both. [break][break]

He would just have to bide his time and think of something better, or hope his teammates came along to rescue him. [break][break]

In this mirror match of pokemon and men, Kouji found himself stuck; he’d lose, he could feel it approaching him. He felt it with the tightness in his throat, in the cold sweat that dripped down his back, in the dryness of his mouth. It was a certain defeat, but he wouldn’t, couldn’t call for help.

He was sick of being useless.
[break][break]
But…If they failed because of his pride, he’d be even more useless, so he took in a deep breath, and just as he was about to quash the last of that terrible ichor that was pointless pride, the wind whistled subtly, he had barely caught it, but just as he looked; Cygne had fallen onto his clone, and the Absol was attacked with a dragon breath.

”Don’t let up, clobber him.”

And clobber Absol did, a close combat that was delivered onto that creature, forcing it backwards, and knocking it out until it was back into data. But the Unown weren’t done with them yet, Cygne was here, but where was Kaname?
[break][break]Just as he had time to think on that, the Unown danced around them, the world began to shift as they formed the surrounding materials into a large structure, a…Medieval siege weapon of some kind, he had never done well in school; so he had no idea.

But it launched some kind of large boulder, flinging it powerfully into the distance, as if gauging its own power. ”Hey hey hey, if we let that thing get us, we’re done for. Absol, use detect.” He said as he looked at the strange contraption, and then his last thought returned as they danced around again, this time forming a collection of Ice to surround them.

”Okay…Fuck, where is Kaname, and secondly, RUN.” He said as he leapt out of the way of a series of ice shards formed by Hidden Power, which filled the place he had been standing on.

”I’ll try to bring back Kaname..” He said as he tried to guess where they cou-, perhaps that large brick building? ”Looks like that large thing there is the place, Absol; use Psycho Cut.” And so it did, a large purple slicing wave that sought the Cylindrical brick…thingie.

With the not!Absol dealt with, the next task was to find Kaname, reunite the pieces of the warp key, and make it back to Cybertron. Or something like that.

“A-- a trebuchet?” Cyg said, a little dumbfounded-- and then got punished for her staring as another chunk of ice got yeeted at them. She dodged to the side and it hit the digital ground, fracturing into splinters and rolling away. “They can manifest anything and they pick-- a trebuchet?”

Were the Unown trying to let them win?

Don’t get cocky, Bothwell.

“Yeah, dollars to donuts, Kaname’s in the-- the Shame Cylinder,” Cyg said, watching as the psycho cut broke on it and didn’t do anything. “Hold on, I have an idea.”

She was up on Sima again in a blink, sweeping through the air, wings sending off air slashes that scattered Unown into digital pieces; at the trebuchet, she jumped down off her dragon. Turning to look at the Cylinder, her mouth was moving in numbers, squinting, holding up her fingers in L shapes. But she was mostly just fucking around. She couldn’t really do this kind of math in her head.

“Blah, blah, centrifugal force, fulcrum point, physics, baby,” she released her Dhelmise and sat it as the counterbalance to the lever, and put Sima in the actual trebuchet bucket. With a powerful jerk, like starting the world’s most stubborn lawnmower, she yanked the trigger. The trebuchet, powered by the 480-odd-pounds of anchor weighing it down, ripped off harder enough to wobble; Sima went speeding through the air. 250 pounds of mechanical dragon crashed into the top third of Kaname’s Shame Cylinder, ripping the top off with a jagged screeching noise-- and kept on going, the sheer force of how hard she was flung carrying her through clouds of Unown, crushing them to data pieces.

Cyg fistpumped her hands. “Hell yeah!” She recalled Superior and released her Dusknoir, again, who scooped her up in an arm and reached out to offer Kouji a ride up, too.

Whether he took it or not, Zen lifted up to the top of the ripped-off Shame Cylinder, so they could peek inside and beam down at Kaname.

“Hi! Lovely weather we’re having. Care to join us?”

Kaname’s time in the brick prison felt like an eternity, meanwhile his Medicham seemed unperturbed by the fact and was simply meditating. Kaname, however, could not simply relax like his Medicham. The little flicker of frustration burned inside his chest, threatening to consume him. “If they had only listened…,” he murmured, fist clenched and unaware of Sima, Cygne’s Iron Jugulis, hurtling toward his Shame Cylinder at breakneck speed. [break][break]

The subsequent smash was alarming, to say the least. Sima’s impact ripped away the top third of the brick and gave Kaname quite the shock, his heart beating rapidly in response to the sudden pokemon smashing through the brick. As he collected himself, Kaname realized he might have a way out. “Daruma, give me a boost!” The Medicham sprung to action, his hands locked to form a foot hold for Kaname to stand upon.[break][break]

Kaname scampered, placing a foot in his Medicham’s hand and was given a slight boost by the fighting type. Kaname was not quite able to see out of the broken portion of the cylinder, but he could definitely see Unown dancing around, watching and waiting to make their next move. Cygne’s sudden presence at the top of the cylinder was not exactly a comforting one. In fact, it made that little flicker of frustration ignite into a full-fledged flame. If she hadn’t been the one to start off so recklessly, they could’ve handled this so differently.[break][break]

“Just get me out of here.” Kaname snapped at the woman, his tone was laden with a discrete venom as he stretched out a hand toward her.[break][break]

Kouji did not take the hand offered; instead looking at the cluster; they were up to something, something big, he could feel it, and it wasn’t the various things that were being pulled towards them and reconfigured, changed.

The rocky earth took on a metallic color, the soil beneath took on the color of…some kind of liquid, it was clear, and it combined together, forming a shape. That of some kind of rocket, one that immediately crashed down onto the ground, creating an explosion.

But they immediately formed another, a stronger shape, larger, and Kouji’s eyebrows couldn’t shoot up any higher. He had underestimated them, but it turned out that these pokemon were nothing to laugh at.

Unown were dangerous.
[break][break]
He switched out his Absol with his Meowscarada. ”Use protect, and surround that.” He stated as he looked to his pokemon who immediately nodded, and did just that, a purple spherical barrier beamed to life around it before it could crash onto the floor. He’d come up with something, something to be used, and the missile was just that. ”Go to the Trebuchet and use Ally switch.”

His pokemon had just done that, switching with the missile just then…

What he hadn’t considered was the proximity to them, and what he hadn’t considered was the weight. Unlike one of his teammates, Kouji most definitely was not an engineer, as the Trebuchet fell apart, it exploded; a shockwave strong enough to reach them, enough to blow him off his feet.

Even if his face wasn’t facing up, Kouji really was seeing stars.

- Unown start making more modern weapons, a missile which falls without the ability to fire itself, it explodes, they make another.[break]

- The weight makes the trebuchet fall apart, it explodes closer to them, and Kouji's recklessness causes a problem for his team in the form of an explosion.

Her good-natured grumbling was cut short by the loud boom of a massive collision, the trebuchet striking the ground and bouncing; it jarred, rocking the pendulum back and forth, colliding so hard the arm snapped. Cyg wobbled backwards, arms windmilling in the air; Zenaïs caught her.

"Okay, I am just about done with these fucking things," she snarled, held about her waist by her Dusknoir like Rose on the goddamn titanic. "We can't take 'em out one by one. They're like fleas. We gotta--,"

She remembered, idly, the reports of the cyberspace place, and some of her own conversations with Isaac.

How they'd gotten there through a whirlpool.

"I have an idea," she said, grabbing Kaname around his own waist, "sorry for the manhandling, but-- Zen, take us to the other ding dong."

Zen scooped both humans and whisked them over to Kouji, whom she reached down and grabbed, hauling up by the back of his shirt. At the same time, she released her Dhelmise.

"Fasten your seatbelts, it's gonna be a bumpy night." She fished in her pocket for a small, blue gem. "You ever see the movie Twister? I mean it. Hold on, Dorothy Gale." She shoved Kouji forcefully into the anchor, wrapping one arm around the Dhelmise, herself, before crushing the z-crystal against the Pokemon's hook.

"Hydro vortex!"

Superior's whirlpool, combined with the rain dance and Z-Crystal, became a frothing, spinning funnel of water at the center of the simulation. The force was extreme, and as the vortex got larger and larger, roaring louder and louder, more and more Unown were sucked into its eye. Air wooshed past Cyg's ears as she heard the little things go whizzing by with terrified squeaks, desperately hoping the other two knuckleheads had listened to her and were holding on to-- if not her Dhelmise, then, something.

While the vortex raged, Cyg yelled, "Now, Zen! Blizzard!" and the Dusknoir conjured a wall of white, the temperature dropping by massive amounts as Cyg felt ice crystals forming on her damp clothes. The winter storm raged at a higher pitch than the low basstone of the hydro vortex, working in conjunction to freeze the Unown into an inverted iceberg.

Kaname grit his teeth as ana fell pulled him to the top of the structure. He wanted to shout at her, scream at her for her shortcomings as his teammate… but he refrained, it would do nothing for him now. He looked down at his Medicham and produced a pokeball, returning the Meditate Pokemon.[break][break]

“We sho-”, his suggestion was cut short the massive boom and following shockwave that rattled his bones. He clung tightly to the woman’s arm as the wave of sound and force blew past him. He made a sour face as Cygne prattled on and on. “An idea? You? How- wait!” He protested as her arm snaked around his waist and the Dusknoir scooped them up and sped over to Kouji.[break][break]

“What do you mean bumpy?” He watched Cygne fish something from her pocket and press it against her Dhelmise and order the anchor pokemon to use Hydro Vortex, which combined with the rain grew to a massive size rather rapidly. The sound of rushing water and air was overwhelming as Kaname clung onto a combination of Kouji and the Dhelmise itself to keep from being sucked into the whirlpool.[break][break]

Another move was shouted for by the engineer; this time for her Dusknoir, who spewed forth a freezing wind and ice that rapidly chilled the area they occupied. His damp clothes felt one hundred times colder with the Blizzard permeating the area, slowly turning the churning water into an icy block. It was a brilliant plan, truly… one that made Kaname sick to his stomach. His chances to impress the higher ups were squandered by his own inability to take control. [break][break]

When all was said and done, Kaname would not celebrate with his teammates. He would stay just long enough to hear their results and then leave just as quickly. No longer interested in being part of the team.
