The sound of screeching, of claws hitting the ground; the sound of the pokeball confirming his catch barely went noticed as he grabbed it. There was something approaching, the silence of the surrounding fauna was perhaps the first sign, the tension in the air the second, and the angry dragon type heading at him the third.

He dived out of the way, Kouji was beginning to hate the safari zone; the idea of not bringing in one’s own pokemon to help protect protected species was silly. They didn’t need protecting, he did.

The crash against the rock wall was loud, he’d take that chance to throw a pokeball again, this time a direct throw with all he had.

”Little prick deserves some pain at least.” Still, a shiny Cyclizar, he’d be sure to keep this one for himself.

Watch was an important part of every Rocket’s job, at least for the Grunts. With Cillian Quinn around, Sootopolis itself was generally safe, or he’d heard on some grape vine somewhere. Still, it might well have been a point of discipline, or perhaps it was someone high up who got a kick out of making him do the most inane jobs.

But as he sat on the rocky dome, with not even a fire to use, and a member he hadn’t worked with before as his company, he was really regretting having quit smoking since his return from that Galarian dream.

Then again, not a lot sparked joy for the present him, even the combat he used to love so much was hollow to him.

”Hey hey, you. What’s your name bud, might as well pass the time if we’re gonna be mindlessly bored.” He patted the ground next to him, kicking up little bits of dust.

Considering their dragons were fighting in the background, and Kouji did find it more fruitful…To stay living, he couldn’t find it in himself to disagree. ”I don’t mind, but I’m a terrible match for faeries, think this one might be it…Based on all the pink.”

A sygna suit, the shield that it provided at least told him that was the case. He poked at it from the other side, a proper protection. But it wouldn’t hold forever, he didn’t bring Drapion either, nor was Duraludon much of a fighter.

”Weavile, you’re up.” He took out the ice type, at least its secondary typing wouldn’t be completely nullified like his dragon would have been. Dark and Dragon did not make a well rounded trainer.

”Roaring Moon, stop fighting…Actually get your Hydreigon to stop as well, no point if we get a draco meteor in the back.” If it was indeed a Paradox pokemon, then the sun might be boosting it this very moment.

”Metal Claw.” The steeled shiny claws were aimed at the Scream Tail who quickly set up a Reflect type barrier before leaping backwards.

Kouji looked at the signed letters and tilted his head to the side somewhat dumbly before he shook himself out of it. It was what it was, some people liked using hand signals and stuff, young people more so; maybe they were just in that age where they thought it was cool?

”Great. We’ll go by sea, sky has too much of a chance of people finding out about us. We sneak on, take out who we can, and see if we can redirect the shipment or wait for further support. If not, we can just sink it.” It was simple, travelling there would take a few minutes at the best.

”I ain’t too good at the whole signal thing, so try to use radio. Fool’s Gold here.” He stated his codename as he got out his Dracovish, it’d be rather quick in general. ”You got a water type, or need me to spot ya?”

A world ruled by the strong?

Kouji Matsubara had seen the world in such a light at one point, he’d sought that kind of resolution at one point. But what the hell was strength anyway, when he’d tried to swing with all of his force, he was knocked onto his butt. When he tried to plot in the shadows, he ended up in the gallows. When he’d tried to move in a unit, as a group, those comrades had disappeared to the other side.

What kind of strength did he have? That of a warrior? That of a killer? That of a fighter? He looked over his shoulder at the rubble and then back up at Navidson. He tried to stop swaying, to secure his footing.

He’d found an answer here, and had that answer shattered to pieces. Kouji Matsubara wasn’t made to sit still in the moment and ponder on things bigger than himself. Perhaps one day, but not in this moment, not right now.

”Strong? Make them see?” So what resolution was there for those who’d left Rocket, what kind of strength was he supposed to make them see? It didn’t matter, he wasn’t made to think.

”You sure you want to be giving me that kind of advice, Navidson?” He’d figure himself out at some point, maybe he’d reach the final absolution as that resolution. But for now, Kouji Matsubara wasn’t made to think.

He balled up his fists tightly, until his mocha knuckles almost turned white, his golden eyes narrowed, he had someone to fight. He was angry, their paths had diverged so wildly, so widely; it wasn’t Navy’s fault.

But Navy stood in front of him.

”I’m about to punch your face in until I figure something out.” He reached for a pokeball, bringing his Tyranitar to the forefront. It was a legendary they were facing, a hero from the past. In a battle that could be to the death, in a battlefield where one could die.

”What’s your name?”

The burgeoning villain asked The Ancient Hero.

Kouji while keeping his eye on the group, continued the conversation he was having with Mystique though her line threw him off for a moment, causing him to stutter for a half second. ”T-The fuck, I’m not scu- Okay, I’m scum, but not that kind of scum. You’ll just owe me, you idiot.” He really didn’t know how to deal with teasing like that, a matter of experience really.

Still, as the group moved, so did they; Kouji was getting ready; figuring out at least a plan of attack; if he fought here he’d need to use his stronger pokemon in fell swoop, not the best idea in all truth. ”I’m definitely not intelligent.” Said the grunt as he tapped his chin, there were multiple routes of attack…

He missed being an idiot.

If he couldn’t figure out a frontal form of attack, then sheer brutality and fear would have to do the job. ”Hope you don’t have a weak stomach.” Kouji was ready for this form of attack, open big, and keep swinging was the only plan that he’d abide by at this moment.

”We’ll let them get back to their place, figure out their hideout.” He kept himself rather natural, no skulking around or anything else of note.

”I usually don’t.” A partial lie, he could think of a couple people he wished were still around in the organisation, but it was better to not voice it. ”Should’ve tried ‘em, maybe we can force him to make a couple cakes before we take care of him, ey?” Kouji said with amusement sneaking into his voice, a simple jest.

Though he did keep his eye to where Houndoom and Luxray were looking, the two had senses far better than that of humans; yet Kouji kept half of his attention on Cillian, there was a difference there. It wasn’t just the darkness, the veins, or his voice; there was an added pressure he was doing his best to ignore.

”Y’know, you can just leave this kinda stuff to us grunts. Then again, the fact you don’t is probably why guys are so loyal towards ya.” He said offhandedly before he kneeled down to look at the tracks; it was half of a footprint, the other half had been cleaned up but the leaf had managed to keep the impression concealed.

He pointed it out, then looked at the pokemon, Houndoom seemed to think this was the right path. The humidity was still rather low even this close to the sea, the islets here were struggling for rain. What shrubbery and plant did grow was struggling too; were the rains really being misplaced to such an extent.

”Think they’re pointing at the caves, they’re pretty brutal and water logged as hell, but the water levels are probably a lot lower than usual this year.” He said the information to a man who did not need telling it.

Steel churning and grinding against itself as it floated in the air, Kouji Matsubara looked at the bronze sheened Klink and rose his eyebrow. ”This one…I wonder if I should melt it do-” It seemed the pokemon recognized him saying it and quickly made a turn in the air to get away from him, though a shot of some kind of blast was made in his direction which Kouji dived out of the way from.

Another, and then another, which made the chase rather daunting, every moment was just a fraction from being ko’d. But it was this that gave him at least a hint of the rush he used to feel in a fight. That was until he reached the cliff face, his eyebrow rising as he threw the pokeball high, a two seamer that dropped right on the head of the Klink.

”I might still have it.”

Kouji ran a hand through his hair as he looked at the pokemon before him; he wondered just how it gave so many other trainers so much trouble. His eyebrow rose before he gave it a wide arc, it was definitely not a bug, but it looked close enough to not want to catch at the moment.

”Not worth the money, see ya later lil buddy.”

The change between heat, and then a prickly sensation that sat over his skin; riding upon the back of Roaring Moon, to see the potential routes to utilise. Kouji could feel it on his skin, and it was all but confirmed now, but battle was coming.

The land itself was prepared for this outcome, of energy and sparks, of heat and of the roar of dragons. There was far too much building, but he wasn’t do it for that, seeking out new routes for smuggling stuff into the region, and perhaps eventually people. The bicycle lane itself wasn’t useful for that, but the sea route underneath was certainly going to be of some use.

”Hey, down lower.” The dragon did so, its wings flapping powerfully as it hovered over the surface of the water. No-one was charging anything here, perhaps he should have brought a few battery cells? No particular point, but the Chinchou and Lanturn seemed to enjoy swimming here more. Electricity drawn into their bodies, a thick collection of pokemon such as this was unnatural, especially when the tide shifted and they’d all end up beached.

”Mah, we should get outta here before any Rangers get he-” It might’ve been too late. He could hear the approach of someone, but he didn’t run, there was no real point once he was spotted, he looked up

”Oi, OI, you’re…That woman from that weird time at the marshes, with the bodies, and the super Ursaring.”
