[attr="class","rapha"]The incredulous look that crosses Mint’s face-- he looks like a surprised cat. Raph preens a little, running a hand through his hair. “Sure. The parent trap. Didn’t use a lemon. Used a sewing needle. And alcohol. Lots and lots of alcohol.” A beat. "What's a parent trap?"

While the idea of appearing on Mint’s popular Instagram page makes him a little… hinky, he does, ultimately, just want to help. So he lets himself be dragged along through the crowd, laughing a bit as they went-- a genuine, excited laugh. Mint bobs and weaves effortlessly through the sea of people. Raph is a bit more like a battering ram, and he catches his shoulders on more than one person.

They eventually break free into a small queue. The smell of grilling meat and the sound of sizzling coals overpower the other scents of sulfuric fireworks, fried treats, and sea air.

“You just tell me what to do and I'll do it. For yer… video, or whatever. Reel? ‘Zat what it’s called?” he digs in his back pocket for his wallet, palms the cigarettes there, frowns, and switches to his other pocket.

[attr="class","rapha"]HMarsh and Jazz seem more than willing to unleash World War 72 on these wayward jellyfish, but Raph is just thinking about the children. There are dragons flying and zipping through the air, and the little kids are screaming and flailing as they panic in their attempts to escape. Raph dives into the water and emerges closer to the shore, beginning to lift them out of the surf and onto the land so their trembling legs can kick in and they can run to safety.

The tidal wave of surf looms over him like the fucking shadow of death.

“Ah, sh-- shoot.”

He goes deeper into the sea to retrieve as many children as he can in his arms, on his shoulders, clinging to his waist, preparing to be the anchor that holds them above the water and makes slowly for the shore.

“Naw, and tattoos are more expensive… and you don’t really find all the stuff to do ‘em sittin’ around the back half of a bar.” He shrugs, as though this will be a decent enough explanation as to why he’s explored so much with poking holes in his body.

Mint tucks his hair behind his ear to show off his ears and Raph cocks his head to peer closer. “Aw, those are cute.”

He has zero idea that Mint was just trying to get him to take his shirt off. Maybe he’d have more of an idea if it wasn’t so easy to do.

“Sure, we can grab something to eat. And a sparkler, too.” There is not a second thought spared for the inherent unsafety of playing with fire shirtless. “You gonna post somethin’ on the ‘gram? The Mintstagram?” he adds with a chuckle.

[attr="class","rapha"]Raph was a pretty go-with-the-flow kinda guy. If his date liked to talk, he’d listen; if they liked to listen, he’d talk. If they wanted to see his piercings, he’d take his shirt off.

He’d take his shirt off for just about anything, of course, but Mint didn’t need to know that.

He’s shucked out of the white cotton and has it around his wrist before he realized he could, maybe, have just told Mint about his piercings. You know, like a normal person.

Oh well, he thinks, balling it up and shoving it in his back pocket, too late now.

“As, uh,” he swallows, putting his hand on his hip and looking down at his own groin as though he was not its primary owner. “Well, I had the, uh, these.” He taps each side of his abdomen, above his hips, to illustrate. “But they weren’t doin’ it for me.”

He palmed his collarbone with something akin to bashfulness. Maybe a close cousin.

“Yeah! Yeah, it. Yeah. Both at the same time. I’m not a halfway kinda guy. So, uh. You thinkin’ about getting a piercing?”

[attr="class","rapha"]Hoenn was decidedly too hot. Raph had come to this conclusion not long after landing in the region. It oscillated wildly between ‘too damn hot and humid’ and ‘too damn hot and dry’ and never, it seemed, reached a comfortable middle ground.

He mopped at his forehead with his t-shirt (he’d stripped out of it almost immediately) and squinted through the heatwaves to watch his Golem move some rocks. She liked to get out and do that, every now and again, and Raph, being a simple man, didn't question it.

What were carnival games but another form of gambling?

He’d gone through a hot streak at the ring-a-diglett game when luck, his favorite fickle mistress, abandoned him.

Now he was stomping grumpily across the carnival grounds to the ATM to get more cash. Because he was a slave to the game, you understand.

His pout was so strong he almost ran face-first into someone.

“Fuck, sorry, y-- oh, hey, it’s you.” He points at the specific individual as though there was some question as to whom he was talking to. “You’re the scrawny kid from the-- the zappy kingdom. Able? Abner? Wait, don’t tell m, it'll come.”

[attr="class","rapha"]The night sky was an aubergine haze above them, the stars bright and glimmering behind tendrils of smoke. From all corners of the world, it seemed, fireworks were going off, celebrating the summer season and, for many, the basic tenet of survival.

Hoenn was a hard place. By some virtue of the invisible, celestial pull of fate, tragedy after global tragedy kept coming, with the region at the apex. If Raph was a spiritual man, he’d say, for certain, they were all atoning for some pretty terrible sins.

But he was not, thank God, and the only big problem he had facing him at the moment was a violet-eyed, cotton-candy-haired boy he was inexplicably taken with.

Mint had wanted to see his piercings, so he was stripping out of his shirt.

“These two didn’t hurt as bad as, uh…” he paused with his arms still in the sleeves, eyes shooting down to his own groin. “...never mind.”

Maybe gambling at the Olympus had worn his edges down. It’s hard to win against the house when they’re like family. He needed to get out more, doubtless. Maybe he should leave while he was slightly ahead, quit while the quitting was good.

But there was a light in Inigo del Rosario's eyes that caught his own and sparked dry tinder to flame. He was being pulled into the inferno, his skin be damned.

“Lady luck not in your lap tonight,” Raph remarked, swinging his winning hand across the table, fingers tapping idly against the felt as he waited for the next round. “Don’t get too discouraged. She’s a flighty broad.”

He pushed his chips in and grinned.
