Even if the first hit had landed, the fact of the matter was that the Beedrill was fast—and was going to get even faster.

Not that he could also go faster, though! However, it was his reaction time that was much better—and hopefully, just hopefully, the Rock Slide would either impede or stop the incoming attack from the Beedrill!

The shining, glistening metallic wings of the Corviknight were the clue for the Braviary to suddenly conjure an avalanche of boulders in the form of a surprise Rock Slide!

While the Meowth was trying to find their bearings, the Braviary would retaliate the Shadow Claw with a surprise Rock Slide of his own; mostly because those claws were really fucking sharp and he did not want them near his eyeballs at all!

This was the consequence of registering extremely late for the tournament—he would be up against veterans who already had several wins under their belt, or others who, just like him, had waffled until the very last second to join the shenanigans happening.

He also had another reason why he was here—although the skies were still clear for now, fact of the matter was he was waiting for more weather updates about unusual thunderstorms around the general area…

For now, he would bide his time.

“Hello, Miss Megan. We meet again,” he said from his side of the arena; while his Braviary was plucking away at some feathers from under his wing.

There it was, the bell that signified the match had started—and right out of the gate the shiny Beedrill would come in ridiculously close; an attempt to try and get him on the receiving end of the stingers—

They weren’t going to take this lying down, though!

With a cackle, he watched as the Braviary spread his wings wide and rose up to meet the challenge; joining the fray with a surprise Aerial Ace, the better to drive the Beedrill back!

If there was one thing the other didn’t know about him, it was how… how hardy (or in this case incredibly stubborn) his own Flying-types were.

They were no slouches, either; all things considered that this was Kyouya, one of his own best Pokémon in battle or outside of battle.

Never mind if that first attack stung and knocked the avian Pokémon upside the head, at least the funny diagram of a hat protected him somewhat from the other attack—

“Chase ‘em!” he called from his side of the field; watching as the Braviary then flew after the strange Pokémon and attempted to grab them in mid-air for a Sky Drop attack!

And there it was—the flash of light was his split-second warning that shit was going to get really explosive, all things considered, so without further ado he’d reach for a certain orb; and all but practically yeet it at the avian who let out a squawk of surprise the moment the Electric-type attack came crashing out!

Not today, though! he thought to himself as the burst of light that followed afterward revealed the funny-looking ‘diagram’ of the world in all its glory; before the Braviary would close the distance in an attempt at an Aerial Ace attack!

“Look, Matias, you’re Elite Four, and I’m a Gym Leader. Of course we should have our best feet forward!” he teased the other from his side of the field.

Due to him registering so late into the tournament, all of the opponents he’d encountered so far were people he was obviously familiar with—and the next one was no exception to that, either!

“Hello, Miss Elise,” he waved her way; although very pointedly averting his gaze from her spectral companion because he did not want that to get out that he was terrified of the heebie-jeebies—that would make him easily exploitable down the road.

“I came here and I’m on a mission, actually,” he would continue, turning to look upwards towards the clouds.

“Rumors about you-know-what’s ‘brother’ has shown up and you know. That,” he continued with a knowing eyebrow waggle while Kyouya the Braviary was already up on the stage, ready to tussle.

“Shall we give everyone a good show, then?”

Honestly, the last time he’d met the man across from him, was in a very similar tournament; only instead of having the flashy gimmick that this one did, it was an all-out brawl; Pokémon to Pokémon in a display of technique and skill.

(Or was it during the time they’d been dragged into cyberspace? So much had happened, really!)

Spying the Corviknight the other had brought along, he couldn’t help but crack a smirk.

“Well, joining the tournament later than the most is probably going to kick my ass, but we’ll see how things pan out,” he cackled as his Braviary, who was already on the opposite side of the stage, was busy trying to pull out a few errant feathers that were stuck in a wing joint.

“So far though? It’s been very crazy!”

“Oh, definitely. I’m packing one of my best ‘mons along for this. Are you bringing along one of your Orbeetle armada?” he ventured a guess; because honestly, as much as he knew the ex-Gym Leader, the younger man across the arena had a heavy preference for Bug-type Pokémon.

“Let’s give ‘em all a good show!”

And just like that, Kyouya the Braviary would come flying down from the sky in a two-point landing; spreading his wings wide the moment the avian would land.

And right out of the gate they were thrown straight into battle! Oh, boy.

“Alright, time to try this shit out…” he continued as he pulled something from out of his pocket, and practically yeeted it straight at the Braviary, who squawked and was enveloped in a powerful burst of light; before a funny-looking… ‘globe’ of the world appeared above the Braviary’s head.

“Why did I know you were going to come at me with an Electric-type attack? Simple: I know you that well!” he exclaimed; before the now-Ground-type Braviary let out a squawking noise; spread his wings; and then brought down a sudden avalanche of boulders in the form of a Rock Slide attack!
