Sinistea chimes pleasantly as Robin approaches Greyson. A 'long time, no see' sits on her tongue, but she doesn't share it. He looks relaxed, but she knows from chatter that these excursions are more grim than a general exploration. Much more is at stake, but Robin doesn't understand all of it. It has something to do with the crystals. Something to do with the potential for violence against Rockets who are here, too, somewhere.

His question catches her off-guard. "Um," she starts, trying to recall a conversation she had with a more seasoned Ranger about rising threats, "I know they use Unown. Um, probably in a bad way. Their intentions are bad. I don't really know what they do." It's not a great answer.

For all she's experienced, she should be more involved in the larger conflicts. But she gets caught up in the day-to-day of being a Ranger, and it's hard to want to add the stress of catastrophic violence to her plate. "Are they here?" She didn't think Unown were in an area like this. She associated them with cryptic ruins.

She wouldn't have picked a Glameow to hunt down a pokemon, but his explanation made perfect sense. "Keen Eye... I'll need to invest in such a handy ability, too." She made a mental note to hunt one down. She kept her eye on his pokemon from the sky, pleased when the Glameow seemed to alert. "Ah, I see him!"

Oranguru was hiding underneath a Tropius in a patch of trees, and from above, Robin couldn't have made him out. "Let's show him what happens to thieves!" It was an odd case of a pokemon being the abuser, but that didn't change how wrong it was to steal pokemon. Dragapult dove down sharply; Robin jumped from him to grab onto the Tropius' neck, clinging and slowly sliding down as Dragapult used dragon rush on the Oranguru.

The Tropius, compelled by Oranguru's psychic abilities, shook violently to try and throw Robin off. "Oof, it's like physical assessment all over again," she complained as she held on tightly.

Hmm. Tsubaki was right; they wouldn't have enough support to create a large enough wall quickly. But the proposal... "Smack 'em? Do we, uh, have the firepower for that?" She looked at her team. Rillaboom and Snorlax could brute force. Dragapult didn't have a lot of firepower against something this large. She wasn't sure how efficient dragon rush would be.

She looked around. They had ample space around the beach despite the wailord pod taking up the shore. Perhaps, they even had enough room for mega evolution. "I could mega evolve Snorlax. His size will give him the opportunity to leverage these guys back to sea, but. He doesn't move that quickly when mega evolved. I'm not sure he'll get them all to enter the ocean before being beached has a negative effect on some of them." She didn't want the wailord to dry out, but Snorlax wasn't efficient enough at that size to solve things. She didn't have the stone for her Rillaboom, either.

Dragapult rescues Gengar's performance, but both her dragon and herself have little time to assess the new competition before the dark bipedal pokemon is moving like lightning. It ends up behind her, and she turns to see its blade pointed at her.

Dragapult's approach is too slow to do much, but Robin gestures for him to stop with an open palm thrown behind her, staring down the blade as Annalise begins to explain. The battle is over. It was stupid of her to think of this as a standard battle. One of her first experiences in combat had been unfair, with her opponent using his pokemon against her just as much as against her pokemon. She can't forget almost being abducted on the water routes, nor the masked face of the Rocket who'd done it all without hesitation...

Dragapult whines and pulls Robin back. She turns to face Annalise as she finishes her lesson. "More practice it is," she concedes with a smile, returning Dragapult to his capsule. Self-defense classes were a great idea, too. She had taken riding lessons from Josh and learned a lot about survival from the likes of Ollie and Shalin, but she needed make sure she was sharp as her pokemon.

"Thank you for the lesson." It's odd to think that she's being tasked with fighting unfairly... or at least, preparing for it. She need to learn the rules for traditional combat, then how to subvert it. She made a decision to not be glum about it and pointed at Annalise with unearned confidence. "I'll be back for some classes. And when I've learned enough, I'll be back for a rematch." She grinned, eager to prove herself.

Robin was fixated on Gwen while the redhead spoke of her rationale for approaching the poison pokemon like she had. Robin's heart was racing, though she couldn't figure out why. Gwen was so radiant, something enhanced by her newfound confidence post-dragon training. Robin averted her gaze once they started walking to avoid being caught staring, though she paid close attention to Gwen with her peripheral vision.

And then they found the odd tree thing above. A grin made its way to Robin's face as an idea dawned on her. "I bet we can find out!" She grabbed Gwen's hand to bring her close, then brandished her brand new tool: a mega accessory bracelet. She let Gwen look at it for a second before activating it. Before their very eyes, Snorlax flooded with energy and grew several stories; a tree started to form on his stomach, and thankfully, Robin manuevered them during his growth so they were standing atop its tallest branches.

Snorlax filled the space, giving them the opportunity to stand just a few feet from the organ, with a few leaves between them. The two of them got a good look at the pulsing thing, though it was still unclear what exactly it was. Robin felt disinterested in touching it, especially since she was still holding Gwen's hand. "Cool, huh?" She turned to look at the other girl as she asked. It wasn't clear which part she was referring to.

"No complaints," she answered. Things had been going well for lately, though she had been sick at the beginning of the month, and she hadn't cared for how loopy it had made her. She considered what he said about the Oranguru carefully. He was using other pokemon like chess pieces rather than fighting directly. "It's strange that he's weaponizing other pokemon..." Where would it get the idea for such behavior? Was it watching Rockets?

She didn't have long to wonder. An earthquake shook the ground beneath them. Then, a Dugtrio arrived, showing its heads just a few meters from where the Rangers were standing around. Robin nearly fell from the suddenness of the attack, but Dragapult stood on his hand legs to push her back to standing. "Get 'im, Draga." The Dragapult used dragon rush, but the Dugtrio ducked back underground. "Ugh, I hate ground types. They're always one-trick ponytas."

She snapped her fingers; Dragapult quickly returned to her side and she mounted again, getting a few meters into the sky to avoid any surprise attacks. "I don't see... hm, if I were an Oranguru, where would I be?" The area looked largely deserted.

Robin froze as the swarm of Poipole arrived with mama Nagandel, but Gwen's insistence on helping her get on Mun kicked her into action. Robin moved automatically, lifting Gwen onto his shoulders. She watched, stunned as Gwen entered a staring contest with pokemon that could poison them into a coma and glue them into an unrescueable glob for some unfortunate set of explorers to discover later.

And then Gwen won.

The poisonous pokemon skedaddled. "Gwen. That was crazy." Her comment hung in the air until Robin started laughing off the excess adrenaline, sounding more than a little unhinged. "I can't believe you, dude! How'd you pull that off!" She'd have never thought to try that. Perhaps she could manage it with her own. It made her want to try it with some ghosts, they were rarely impressed with staring as far as she could tell. They preferred larger reactions if they liked messing with humans.

"Okay, well, now that we're not being poisoned seven ways from Sunday... where do you wanna go?" Gwen was full of surprises, always outperforming Robin's expectations. She wondered what would happen next.

Robin's excitement at Annalise's praise is short-lived; Gengar can't evade the fast paradox pokemon at this range and eats the psyblade, fainting with a cry. Robin returns him to his pokeball. She isn't sure what strategy to take on the paradox mon. She's sure from its appearance that it's a steel type, but she has never learned type match-ups.

Her only move is to bring her other pokemon out, so she releases Dragapult. "You've got a crowd, Dragapult. Let's impress 'em! Show off your rush." Dragapult, thankfully, obeys. He uses dragon rush at the iron leaves, though his movements lack some finesse. The dragon was rather clumsy, though he always motivated to keep going and had, thus far, made a great companion for a Ranger.

Gwen's reaction thrilled Robin; she remembered being stunned by how strange the Border was, and now Gwen got to experience some of the craziness that the world had to offer. "These pockets bend reality a little. The Border had floating islands and a lot of ghost activity. This place is almost alive. The odd water-space of it that we're floating in is something you can't find elsewhere in Hoenn." She did not know the specifics, but it was enough of an understanding to want to explore.

She was about to share something else when a glob of purple gunk slapped the ground in front of her. She turned to where it came from and saw two Poipole. She had encountered these before in Megaopolis. They were crazy fast. "Don't let that gunk touch you. It'll hold you in place like superglue."

Snorlax threw himself into the action, generating an icy blizzard over the open area to freeze out the Poipole. "We need to get rid of them quick before they draw more attention to us. We won't make it far if we're surrounded."

Robin grinned as Gwen took her hand. "Yeah, we've got this!" She took the lead on the tunnel, floating down until they reached a new level of spacious cavern. Plants lit various areas of the walls and crevices, but it was largely dark. It set Robin's hair on ends -- something was watching them. "Mun, let's--"

She was cut off as a sharpedo cut right in front of them, his rough skin fin almost striking Robin's arms. "Let's go!" She pulled Gwen by the hand and stumbled in the dark. The floaty water-space around them inhibited their speed, however. "Mun, use surf!" The Snorlax was right behind them and generated a large wave of water to crash right at their feets and sweep them away through the floor of the cavern and into an open area with just a few pillars of stone surrounding them.

They were out of the cavern and into the open, deep sea.

Robin was off Dragapult's back and stretching her arms overhead. She enjoyed riding far more after her last lesson with Josh. Dragapult was even responding positively to her direction, which she hadn't expected after letting him take the lead and do things his way for so long. "Here ya go," she said as she offered him an oran berry to snack on. If he didn't have snacks, he would start licking anything in the environment, and she really didn't want her partner to witness that behavior.

Speaking of, she turned to see him coming on his Swellow. "Long time, no see!" She cried out as he landed, waving excitedly. She was very proud of herself for just earning her cadet status as a Ranger, denoted with her differently-colored armband. She didn't draw attention to it, though, as she was far more interested in what he'd been up to since they last met. "I'm glad it's you and me against anything psychic. Those pokemon still have it out for me, I swear."

She shivered. Psychic types in the wild were always hostile to her. "Is it an Oranguru we're looking for? The report I got was vague."

Robin hadn't been this close to a paradox pokemon since searching ruins with Greyson. It was stunning to see them as the strange texture of their forms was oddly alluring. But she found her appreciation dulled as Iron Leaves pulled a shriek from Gengar. "Gen, use hypnosis!" Robin's strategy had been for confuse ray or hypnosis to inflict a status on Annalise's pokemon to give them a leg-up, but Gengar was resistant to the idea again.

Gengar used dark pulse instead, to Robin's chagrin. Perhaps it was her fault for letting her pokemon fight without her coordination in the past; she rarely ever instructed them and instead let their instincts take over, as she had little familiarity with type interactions. Her face was warm in embarrassment, but hopefully she could sell that Gengar acting differently from her callout was a part of her strategy to throw her opponent off. "Keep 'em guessing, Gen!"

thread summary: Robin is SICK. Constant travel across Hoenn has taken its toll on her. She doesn't go home; no, she stays away from Dewford. Her family will be no comfort. She holes up and, in her feverish state, calls Gwen for help. Her best friend comes quickly and takes good care of Robin with delicious soup, gross chesto-flavored medicine, and water. Robin gets to experience herself actually being taken care of and doing so without being belittled like she would've with family. It heals a little something in Robin, and it strengthens their bonds as friends.[break]

why is it important?: Robin's illness is vulnerability, which she doesn't like to share, especially with Gwen as she feels compelled to protect the other girl. Robin's been slowly adjusting to Gwen's newfound confidence and power after her training with Freya -- initially, Robin was VERY angry that Freya made Gwen into her image and changed her so much (into a dragon enthusiast!!), but Robin realized Gwen was growing into her own with the help of Freya and just happened to find Dragons interesting enough to study... Gwen is still Gwen, but she spends more time outside rather than sitting at a computer most of the day and doing nerdy whatevers.

Robin got reassurance that it's okay to be unwell, and she got to see that Gwen was capable of not only protecting herself, but Robin, also. And as a final note... that childhood friends to lovers is SLOW BURNING. (first curry babey let's GOOOOO)
