it isn't ideal, but neither is wasting their pokemon (or their lives) on fighting a vengeful interdream ghost. marcus concedes to the plan with a nod, silhouette stark against the brilliance of the flutter mane's dazzling gleam. [break][break]mint frost grabs his arm, but this time he shoves him ahead instead of pulling him out of the crossfire. gravel scatters as he stumbles forward, muted beneath the sound of pokemon screams and the fireworks of fairy-type attacks. [break][break]the interdream mist thins as he nears the entrance to the cave. he glances back and sees the beast gaining ground behind him. the air behind them shimmers with a psychic that absorbs the twin flutter manes' stray attacks. he jogs to a halt once he reaches open air, turning back to look at mint and the threats receding into the dark behind him. [break][break]relief washes over him as he catches his breath, looking once at his espeon before moving toward mint. [break][break]"are you okay?"[break][break]

porygon lets out a string of beeps — an error code, maybe — as the hurricane scoops it up. the discharge dispels with a crack as the normal-type spins helplessly around in the cyclone. marcus had hoped it would have been a better distraction than what it fizzled out into, but PENELOPE LIVY stays fixed on him as he and his noivern lift into the air. [break][break]
fuck, he thinks, glancing back at the staraptor gaining on them. there's no avoiding it, so he tugs his noivern into it. the aerial ace strikes the noivern harshly against its body. the dragon-type lets out a shriek, floundering from the blow — but not nearly as fatal as a compromised wing would have been. [break][break] with a gust of tailwind, the noivern gracelessly rights itself and tries to get out of the staravia's striking range.

"fucking bitch!" he gasps out, trying to channel the sudden pain into a rough shove forward. he had planned to shepherd illeana reyes out of the cave out of courtesy to his old connections to the reyes family, but she deserves little and less for being so uncooperative. he swings a leg at her, an action in direct opposition with his growled "i'm trying to help you!"[break][break]poison powder settles across the top of houndoom's body like a stinging, purple dusting of snow. the dark-type is well-trained, shuddering against the toxins seeping through its skin, as it loosens its jaws and tries to crunch down again. its paws scrabble weakly against the floor, attempting to get its legs underneath itself again.

on cue, the flutter mane lets out a teeth-gritting shriek and swoops in at them, but mint frost 's fraxure is quicker. marcus' pokeball slips from his fingers, cracking open against the cave floor and releasing his espeon. the psychic-type lets out a low growl in the back of its throat, tail lashing as it watches the interdream pokemon get buffeted away by the dragon's attack. [break][break]" — thanks." marcus says, ragged, once mint frost pulls him behind cover. the shadow ball fizzles against the ground where they had been standing just a moment before. [break][break]
if it's a ghost-type, he figures, a shadow ball should bring it to its end much quicker. [break][break]
"copycat," he commands, and his espeon volleys it right back at the misdreavus. beneath the shrillness of its pained scream, he turns his attention back to mint: "we need to get out of here before this mist 'births' any more of these pokemon."

he hesitates, just barely perceptible, as the scientist dares to travel deeper. just being here, in this space where his old ghosts mingle with the deep nothingness of her dreams, unsettles him. it's duty, rather than curiosity, that forces him to compartmentalize the discomfort for later. he nods.

"i'm fine." and he proves it to them both by stalking toward the portal. a hand reaches out, disappearing into the wound in space. he tries to pull it back out, but it feels like something is holding onto it on the other side. not dragging him in, but not letting him walk back the choice, either.
