The man smiles. It’s a soft gesture out of place on such a chiseled face. “I am glad someone believes that.” He shook his head. Cascades of white hair—dry from sea spray—follow the motion. “All it did was put a target on our backs.” In his younger days, he’d been brash. Said a lot of stupid shit to some very powerful people. Full enough of bravado that he ended up choking on it.

Then, when victory was in his grasp, the pied piper came calling. It took almost everything that mattered in an instant. Ironically—though he saw clearer now and could hold his (stubby) tongue—it’d driven him to do exactly what he’d been accused of. A better guy might have written a haiku about it.

When asked to expand on his strategy, Kazuya ponders for a moment. “Pain Split and Payback are the first things that come to mind.” Both of these moves are a big part of Natsu’s repertoire. Unfortunately, the bear lacked the patience to make the Pain Split do its job. “Low Kick’s pretty deadly too.”

An empty Pokeball is lodged at a Feebas as it swims by. It makes him think of his daughter somehow. The surf washes it right into his waiting palm. From behind them, a lumbering Carracosta makes a reappearance. Damp tropical leaves hang from its beak like a magician’s bird. Any signs of its earlier exhaustion have vanished.

“Costa.” With a grunt, Kazuya forces himself to stand. “Well.” He slaps his hands on his crossed legs. "We better get going before I give up the farm.” His eyes turn toward the horizon and the sea of the monsters who’d made his life hell.

“It’s a long way to Evergrande.” With a final nod of respect, Kazuya and his heavier belt board his Carracosta.

He’s watched Josh’s matches on television. If he felt like it, he’s pretty sure he could wipe the floor with the speed-obsessed ranger. . “I’ll be sure to swing by one day.” But there’s a bittersweet taste to the idea of it. ”Really fire things up.” It's an ironic catchphrase from his days on the circuit. Kazuya had never used a fire Pokemon in his battles and had no plans to start. But some guy had started it, and it’d stuck like chewed bubblegum. These days, they probably meant he’d commit arson.

The man laughed. It’s a buzzing, erratic sound. What were eight pieces of tin without the team that’d gotten him there? Somehow the League had managed not to lose those. Just something far more important. “It’s not about badges, Devlin.” In some dusty book, he was still a Champion. But in newer ones, he was also a terrorist or monster—the stain on his reputation something good PR couldn’t wipe clean. Sure, he happened to be a criminal now, but they’d backed him into it.

The radio at his side grows in volume as if “The warden confiscated the team that got me there.” Now, he was stuck with a bunch of babies and new acquisitions. They were not an extension of him as his Palafin or Raichu had been.

“Then, they lost them.” There’s a spike of rage as he pushes himself to his feet. The golden eyes spark like storm clouds as anger threatens to drown him momentarily. To turn this conversation into a sea of uncharacteristic red. A ball rockets out lethally fast as he tosses it at a lurking Electabuzz. “Typical bureaucrats.”

Any thought of reclining by the beach fades. With a final glance at the younger man, the Kindler moves to depart. In that face, he now sees everything he hates. All those years of learning to control that temper are turning to stardust. “Have a good night.” A sharp whistle brings his Pokemon back to him as they are returned in a burst of red light.

An inner understanding of Josh’s words is why he’s talking to the guy instead of strangling him. Sure, he’d do it if someone asked him to, but there’s not any benefit in doing it now. “War’s never simple.” It was made up of people after all. And, last he checked, humans weren’t like chess pieces. They didn’t operate logically either. “Anyone who says it is trying to recruit you.”

The quizzical look just receives a resigned smile. Some people get fixated on the weirdest stuff. But there wasn’t any harm in being Speed Racer, not as long as he cared about the mount he was riding. Which, if the televised matches were anything to go by, Devlin did. The Pokemon looked well-fed and happy enough.

Kazuya nodded. “Fact of life.” In his glory hog days, he’d actually thrived on the anger of his enemies. Those nasty comments in the video section? He enjoyed responding to them in a sickly sweet way. In press conferences, he sometimes thanked the trolls. But nowadays, there was more death threats than admiration. It took the fun out of it.

“I used to.” Kazuya shrugged. He certainly wanted to try again. But it would be hard to find time to play trainer with a fucking war breathing down their necks. “I was Lavaridge's pride and joy. Fans called me the kindler.” Kind of a stupid nickname, but trying to change it had proved impossible. It’d be easier to swim up a waterfall.

As he turned from Josh, his eyes caught on a Raichu sifting through the shore in search of shells and munches. His heart twisted as his original starter comes to mind. The Pichu who’d once laid across his hair like a hat. The way his bangs refused to stay down in the little sparkplug’s vicinity. “Just not sure I want to start over.”

It felt like giving the gym circuit a go would be spitting in the face of his most stalwart allies. Like he was giving up somehow.

Kazuya offered a polite nod in greeting. His shoulders are hunched slightly forward, an ill-fated attempt to shrink himself. Sure, he was a terrorist (now, anyway), but those glances had always been there. People saw muscles and thought violence. They didn’t know how much discipline went into crafting a body like his. It took discipline.

No, all they saw was a monster a few hours from a rampage. Even when he’d been saving lives, there’d been a subset of the population that flinched when he emerged from volcanic smoke. Now though? It was worse. The people who’d once been paart of the Yoshida fan club were quick to toss him under the bus. Luckily, it seemed Finnegan was made of tougher stuff.

At the offer of tea, the mercenary nodded. “Sure.” The speaker at his waist intoned. “Been a while since I’ve had a proper cup.” Though he’d hated the stuff as a kid—always thought it tasted like dirt—he’d acquired the taste for it as he aged. Probably had something to do with having nothing but rust water for three years.

After a moment of debate, the ex-kinddler sunk onto the mat next to the kettle. His Bewear did the same thing. But it wasn’t a minute before the bear stated playing with the tatami. Not wanting to be seen as some guzzling giant, Kazu waved Finnegan ahead. When he spoke, there was a hint of mirth. “Don’t think I've ever called a guy Master before.”

Kazuya had been hoping to disguise his attack in the Voltorb swarm. To blow the guy’s home sky-high and blame it on the temperamental electric types. It should have been easy. But the guy was an idiot.

An ivory brow jerked up as the target grasped for zachary stellar’s ankles.“The—the guy’s a monster!” The man wheezed as he pushed himself to his feet. Tears streamed down his face—one of his eyes already swelling shut from a well-placed kick. Kazuya’s device buzzed as he took a few strides forward. “That’s kind of reductive, Liu.” He clicked his tongue in admonishment. “I gave you the chance to come quietly.” And, he’d have offered the kid the same chance if his Voltorb wasn’t such a quick trigger.

Luckily, a Mime Jr. jumped into the fray and tossed up a barrier. Kid’s got it handled.Kazuya’’s hand threw over his face as the Hisuian Electrode’s bark exploded in a blast of heat and spring-powered vines. A splinter cut a shard into the brow above the mask. A slow line of red trailed down his cheek.

The giant of a man shakes his head to ring off the ringing. His Bewear does the same, shards of wood rolling off his skin. Beady, short-sighted eyes narrow at Zachary as bulging muscles flexed. Claws erupt from mittens as the beast takes a step toward the quivering man.

The kid’s shouts are met with a warm chuckle. “I wasn’t aiming for you.” His mouth doesn’t move when he talks. Or, at least, muscles doing so aren’t visible beneath his mask. Thick arms fold over his expansive chest. Now, the target’s literally using the punk as a meat shield. “If you're smart, you’ll walk away.” He doubted this good samaritan would be so generous if he knew just what this loser had done.

Much less forgiving than his trainer, the Bewear stepped up to the shield. He stared at the Pokemon with a challenging, wrinkle-nosed stare.

“He’ll kill me if you do!” Kazuya snorted. Bull. Just getting rid of him would be way too lenient.

Fate had a way of throwing curve balls at you. It was only a couple months after being crowned that the League assholes had tossed the key. But it’d be stupid to blame one on the other. Selfish to try and weave a red thread between a victory and the loss of a brave defender like “All roads have bumps, Devlin. It doesn't mean your car made them.” Losses somehow felt worse when they followed a peak, but the result was the same.

“Shame.” Kazuya’s device buzzed. “I’d have liked to see that.” Sure, spectating wasn’t the same as being in the ring, but it gave some imitation of the high. It would also prove valuable later. A fight between two heavy League hitters gave him insight into knocking them down a few pegs. Maybe killling them too. But that was something best reserved for a real battle. Surprise attacks weren’t his style.

The two giant Pokemon were quick to find their balance. The pouches of eggs were quickly distributed between them. The Hippowdon seemed to be the less patient of the two. Its feet shifted in the sand on occasion, little streams of dirt flowing from the spigots on its back. A mitt of a hand pats the hippo’s shoulder. “Fill the bags.” He figured the warm sand would be a nice bit of padding for the shells. Definitely better than just jostling in a pouch.

The emergence of his Raging Bolt drew a sharp brow upward. When you couldn’t talk, it was hard to do much but listen, with your eyes as well as your ears. “Something wrong?” Seemingly sensing the disturbance, the Raging Bolt twisted its head and fixed Josh with a steely stare.

“We worked out asses off to get there.” Kazuya is quick to agree. It was a lot of late nights and practice sessions. Coming home bone-tired from a day on the volcano to practice Thunderbolts on gnarled up trees. Water guns tossed at man-made infernos in the backyard. Then, all the near misses as he pushed his team harder.

But any pride in this achievement is clouded by what came next. The punches and heartbreak as his Pokemon are torn from his hands. The years of trying to break an innocent (mostly) man that followed. Hell, he hadn’t even had a chance to breathe before they’d ripped the rug out from under him. “Seemsf silly now.”

At James’s ask, the ivory-haired man sinks into a thoughtful silence. “Hm.” He runs through what made the difference in that last fight. It hadn’t been the sponsors or his slimeball of a coach’s bribery. That fight had been won fair and square. Finally, he speaks again. His golden eyes watch as the waves pushes the line of moisture in the sand.

“Use your opponent’s strength as much as your own.” Payback? Giga Drain? Letting their momentum do the trick? That kind of stuff kept his buddies going strong. A trill from his Whooper draws the man’s attention. Which is good. The Pawmi would have made him squeal, and that wasn’t the impression he wanted to make.

The biggest problem with this keyword? It wasn’t made for gant mitts like his. First, he narrowed the database started by trying. Then gender before settling on a specific species. Halfway through scrolling, a raucous noise erupted. It bounced off the shelves and Pokeballs to create a cacophony. “?” With an uncharacteristic growl, Kazuya turned to face the Pawniard. In the computer’s light, the eyeholes of his mask glowed. “What little shits.” [break][break]

Electricity sparked among them as the Thunder Wave headed to its target. “Natsu!” The bear was startled by the appearance of the steel -types. A Pokeball dropped to the floor. This was followed by a feeling of tingling as the Thunder Wave hit home. Obviously irritated, his trainer dials up the volume on his modulator. “Take care of them!” There’s an obvious urgency to his synthetic tones.

Natsu was too busy contemplating his reflection in an Ultra Ball to immediately respond. His teeth gritted in a cut-off snarl as a wave of electricity washed over him. A Pokeball dropped to the floor and rolled beneath a nearby shelf. Disoriented, the fighting type stumbled backward into the shelf behind him. It began to teeter before falling over with a deafening CRASH! Beady eyes narrowed with deadly intent, only for his immediate charge to end in paralyzed limbs.

When he finally manages to shake off the tingling, he charges toward the Pawniard with a Hammer Arm.

With a disapproving frown, Kazuya tossed out another Pokeball. “Let's even up the odds!” Another Pokeball opens as a tiny Wooper drops to the ground beside her master. With her there’d be no more of that paralysis shit.

You didn’t get a frame like his by sitting on a couch all day. Part of it is genetics—courtesy of his giantess of a mother. But most of it came from years of pumping iron and exercise. Carrying people down ladders and fighting off lava wasn’t a job for noodles. From yoga to hiking, there were few physical items out of reach. This included swordplay.

When he’d been a rash kid, his mom and dad had enrolled him in various martial arts. After wrestling lost its charm, he turned to kendo. Now that he was free of jail—and the fact that he couldn’t have a toothbrush, much less a katana—Kazuya returned to form. Though he often practiced in the forest behind his cottage, he yearned for something more. His Bewear wasn’t focused enough to care about swordplay and form.

Natsu did not need to be. A simple flex of his arms could crush solid steel. Asking him to care about some stick was like asking a fish to explain how to fly. The idea of rules and order also didn’t mean much to an animal. Especially one with the mindset of a twelve-year-old.

Irritated by his own rustiness, Kazuya enrolled in a school belonging to one Finnegan Yang. A quick talk with his mom and he’d found his old kendogu and shinai. Loading those into a bag, he made his way there. In place of Natsu, a pure white Zeraora walked at his side. It seemed curious about the discipline.

After entering, he locked eyes with the coach. The giant of a man nodded. When he spoke, his mouth did not move. The words had static over them, like a radio station slightly off frequency. “Finnegan Yang?” The bag dropped onto a nearby bench. “I am Kazuya.” They would see how closely this man study his enrollees.

Many people did not enjoy having a terrorist in their gym. Mostly because they did not read the story to its conclusion. It did not matter of which crimes he was innocent. Certain stains never fade.

The last record he had of his Raichu, the guy had been sent to Slateport. It’d been a blurry picture on social media—one caught by a former fan. But after poking around the city, he came up empty handed. No one had seen his friend, and there were no new sightings. Kazuya had even stopped by the Ranger station to confirm that fact.

But, just like every time, some desk worker told him they’d ‘look into it’ and ‘get back to him.’ The woman didn’t even get up from the desk. Then, she gave a tiny little smile. "I see." But Only years of solitude helped him resist the urge to throw something. Instead, he bowed. The radio at his side lit up as a deep voice emerged. “Thank you.” With that, he exited through the front door.

Kazuya did not return that way.

You have a few minutes. That’s what Kazuya thought as he watched the night-shift monitor walk by. Though tempted to smash through the front window, he decided to be subtle. He needed to find his Raichu. That meant digging through boxes in some dusty storage room, an activity that took time.

He managed to get a staff entrance open with a credit card. With his Bewear behind him, the giant of a man made his way to storage. Now, he just needed to understand the tracking system. Computers weren’t really his thing. Sure, he could use a cell phone and write a Word document, but this Dewey decimal mockery was something else. “Hm.” After a moment of contemplation, the Rocket started typing on the keyboard. In the shadows, the giant looked like some shadowy spirit of lore.

Bored of watching his trainer play with the computer, the Bewear began wandering the aisles. Occasionally, he’d pick up a ball and stare at it. Then, he’d slide it back into place. The wrong place.

After years in a damp, cold cell, any heat was welcome. Sure, there was only so much you could do to ward off the heat, but ice was something else entirely. It snuck into your very bones and turned your marrow to ice. “Surprised it hasn’t scared you off.” Sure, Rocket probably needed this kid, but it wasn’t like this was the only region out there. “Summer’s a beast.”

Kazuya thinks back to the submarine and the few glances he’d gotten around the lab. “I get it.” Most of those came courtesy of being a packhorse. With those boxes in the way, he didn’t get to see much. People tended to treat him like a bull in a china shop. They assumed his size turned him into some blundering kaiju. “That stuff isn’t easy to move around.”

The mercenary bows his head. “I’ll tell you. Promise.” Though he wasn’t upfront about it, Kazuya hated doctors. The idea of getting poked and prodded like cattle didn’t sit well in his stomach. The lack of control in that hell just made it worse. “Hard to pay you back without my fingers and toes.” Though, right now, it was his nose that was baring the worst of it. He was pretty sure the hairs inside were icicles.

At the cracking near the generator, the Bewear’s hair stood on end. He whirled to face a perceived threat—its teddy bear visage suddenly something out of a horror movie. “Calm yourself, Natsu.” With a grumble, the bear kicked around at some ice shards irritably.

“Neither of us wants that” Kazuya shouted back as he reeled it back in a couple of fibers. From their vantage point, he can see the warm glow of the lights below. The few people with fireplaces seem to be making the most of it—their dark plumes of smoke highlighting the dirty snow. “Half the town’d freeze to death.” With a final shake, the power line is free. It jumps back up to its original position. “Us Hoennians have thin blood.”
