In real life, his laugh would have been dismissive. Maybe even chiding. “Everywhere’s a grave.” With trillions of dead in history, he doubted there was a single foot where somebody hadn’t died. Who knew how many Rattata or Trapinch corpses piled up beneath their feet? “I’d like mine to be useful.” That was the beauty of life. Everything had its place. Even the dead.

As the talk continued, Kazuya shook his head. War was hell? Sure. But it wasn’t the deepest one. It left you free. “At least you know who to fight.” In his case? It was people like Josh. But, if the day came he had to snap his neck, he’d look the guy in the eye while doing it. As the talk turned to lost Pokemon Kazuya felt his brow pinch. “It’s not about how they ride.”

It was their souls. The way he understood them as much as his heart. How felt like an extension of his blade.

Kazuya shrugged. “Guy’s a dick.” However, he supposed that distrust was warranted. It was those so-called detectives who’d left him to rot in jail. The same idiots believed the fake evidence that was tossed at their feet. In the end, it wasn’t the truth they wanted but a nice, clean solution.

The introduction is met with a grunt. “I know.” He paused. “I watch the circuit.”

Unlike the last few Pokemon, Kazuya did not react outwardly to the next intruders. He was pretty happy with his haul today, even if none of them were what his heart truly wanted. A Palafin with a familiar tattoo across its tail and chest.

The chances of two people meeting on a deserted island seem infinitesimal. Yet, there they are. Perhaps it is just the world’s version of a jest. A silly bit of irony that drove people together like beach trash. “Heh.” Kazuya’s smile is easy—a surprising thing for a guy who's done the stuff he has. But, as long as he follows his own code, there’s no guilt to be had.

Fortunately, the mercenary has no reason to harm James. They are not on the battlefield. No superior has asked him to spear his head like some pillaging warlord. They are simply two men enjoying the feeling of warm sand beneath their feet. A salty breeze sends the strands of his ponytail swirling. With a noise of half-hearted irritation, Kazuya tries to pull it back into place.

Fingers in his hair, the Rocket turns to face James. “There’s little harm in asking if I did.” The worst thing he would do was leave the man’s curiosity unsatd. There was little need to do so, however.

“I was a champion once.” Hilariously, he chased that dream halfway around the world. Won the crown from a person in Johto. But he’d never so much as touched the place back home. Kazuya thought he was too cool for that. “I thought I’d see how Evergrande measures up.” The answer rang true. Which it was. It just wasn’t the whole answer. “What about you?”

About that time, his Wooper’s attention shifted again. This time it was to a redfin in the water. “Misa.” The ground type drew up to her full height. The man nodded toward the Totodile. “Grab that croc.” The rather ironic order was obeyed as the Wooper dove into the water. It bounced onto a rock in front of it. The tiny paddle tail beat against the stone, akin to a Bidoof’s warning.

The Totodile rose to the taunt. A battle ensued.

For a second, Kazuya almost scoops Marilyn up in a fireman’s carry. But he remembers her earlier fierceness. And it isn’t like she was asking for it. Stuff like that—especially when it wasn’t necessary—could be seen as demeaning. His grandma would rather crawl than let somebody cart her around like a bushel of Babiri. So in the end, he grunts. “You’re welcome, ma’am.” The talk of Ludwig draws a smile onto the mercenary’s face. “Sounds like a good guy.”

It’d be nice if somebody could carry him for once. But it’d take a really special sort of person.

“Youth’s wasted on fools.” When Natsu turns to tease again, he finds his master’s golden eyes icy. Sure, they might kill innocent people, but there was no reason to disrespect an elder. Especially such a charming old bird. “That’s enough, Natsu.” The bear’s movements slow as his ears flatten against his head. Kazuya drops to give Marilyn his elbow.

But even this assistance does not allow them to reach the staircase’s peak. Once, to see if they were heading forward, Kazuya dropped a bit of virtual trail mix on the tread beneath them. When he looks back, the blue bit of chocolate stares back almost mockingly. Tired out by his earlier tomfoolery, the Bewear soon lags behind them. Eventually, the Pokemon collapses to his knees.

Kazuya follows him.

With growing irritation, Kazuya forces himself skyward until his legs tremble beneath him. His vision starts to flash from lack of blood flow as the air thins. But, when his knees fail, he begins to crawl. He drags his knees against the cool material until even his arms struggle to hold his weight. “RAH!" With a silent snarl, he collapses to his knees. A fist hits angrily at the cool substance beneath him as if striking out at heaven itself for his impotence.

The noise of that voice is banished with an irritable swipe. “You can take that circle and—” His normal voice ends in a blaze of static.

When he throws the headset, it shatters.

A scarred woman whose entire life had been dedicated to holding a volcano in check. An enemy whose reflection was plain in her spitfire temper and tendency toward privacy. She had died while he was in prison. Buried in a ceremony that he had not been allowed to see.

Today, he intended to visit her grave. A single flower—her favorite—was laid on top of her tombstone. A plate-sized hand planted on cool stone as he murmured a prayer to some unseen god. He did wis unto her peace. For such a thing would bore her to tears. Instead, he bid her happiness in whatever existence continued. But this task seemed hollow.

To honor his memory, Kazuya knew he would have to assist the town she called home.

The ash coated everything like a worn-out blanket. One of the itchy, scratchy ones you find buried at the bottom of your grandmother’s closet. The town’s beauty was all but invisible. Even his grandmother’s house, a lovely little cottage, was lost beneath a layer of soot. “Misa.” The Wooper stopped its races around a mud puddle. Its bright eyes lifted to Kazuya’s inscrutable ones. “Per?” Its head tilted.

He swept his arm in an arc toward the town itself. The drab, grey wash covered every visible surface. “Let’s lend these people a hand.” His mouth did not move, but his voice was clear. “I will buy mochi on the way home.” With a delighted chirp, the Axolotl blasted a burst of water at a nearby storefront. Yellow peeked through as the thin layer of ash congealed and rolled down the storefront.

Then, the Wooper turned to unleash another Water Gun. But this time, its target had a face.

Kazuya did not believe in Rocket’s vision of the future. In truth, it differed little from the current world. The biggest change was the size and holder of the boot against their neck. Still his debts to the organization needed to be repaid. Fortunately, he found today’s target repugnant. The man reminded him of a bug—eyes made larger by his thick bifocals. His body quivered like a woman’s purse Yamper as he backed away from Kazuya. [break][break]

“You—you’re with them, right? Rocket?” The snitch licked fretfully at dry lips. The guilt had already been eating away at him.

The mercenary did not speak. His head merely tilted to one side. His gargantuan form’s shadow eclipsed the quivering man. As people often did on missions like this—trying to pad the silence—he began to yell. “Now, look! The League wasn’t going to let me not tell them. Either way, I’m a dead Ducklett! Please.”The begging then turned to chatter about his wife and daughter. Using children like shields—even figuratively—was distasteful. If you chose to make a deal with the devil, you had best uphold your end of the agreement.

Kazuya’s expression did not change. Behind him, his Bewear towered with both fists balled into dangerous projectiles. Its obsidian eyes were narrowed to slits. At its foot, the man’s Kecleon lay in a crumpled heap. Though its eye was bruised, it would be allowed to live. It was not responsible for its trainer’s dishonor. As to the man himself, Kazu had not yet decided his fate.

A heavy boot thudded as the mercenary took a step forward. His head tilted back to its original position. The traitor backed up until he was pressed against the door. “Mercy! Please!” For a moment he looked hopeful. Kazuya paused as if considering the request. His hand came to rest somewhere on his waist. Then, he spoke for the first time. “No.” Two hands reached up to grab the man by his collar and leg.

With a grunt, the man tossed him through his picturesque bay window. The curtains rippled with his exit. Glass showered the ground as Kazuya stepped over the sill and into the street beyond. Golden eyes lifted to a pedestrian. Those metallic eyes said many things, but most importantly: ‘This is none of your concern.’ A heavy boot landed on the man’s chest with a thump.

Panicked mossy eyes turned toward the approaching trainer. “HELP ME! Please!” Kazuya sighed. “This—this lunatic just attacked me!” A wooden Electrode joined his trainer as Kazuya tossed out a ball. It began to pulse in warning.

Occasionally, Kazuya throws a glance back over his shoulder to Ryker. It is unnerving that the guy’s face never changes. It’s like a statue. “Looks that way.” Then, the path ends. Below the League officials look like ants.

The center of the camp seems to be drawing their attention. Rising above the tent is a multi-colored rock. It looked like everything else he’d seen down here, but he’d guess it was pretty special. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have wrapped it in a fence.

Natsu pops his claws into place. His needle-sharp teeth drop into place as he prepares to drop down on the unsuspecting trainers. It reminds him of his daughter’s recent obsession with Drop Komalas. A hand lifts to his belt, ready to pull another ball. “Ready when you are.”

[attr="class","kazu2"]On the surface, it almost makes sense. People loved words like equality. Heck, it’d be nice if he’d had the same start as the rich kids up the street in Lavaport. But then the cracks in the tale become visible. “Pretty sure that’s just anarchy with extra steps.” And, last he checked, no one was stopping them from doing that now. The termites just had a hive to defend themselves.

The Mamoswine backs out of its tower entanglement. Wires and metal tresses wrap around his head like some steel magnate’s crown. It turns to face its trainer with indecision in its eyes. “Chase em off.” Kazuya pauses to close the young woman’s eyes. If he had alcohol on him, he’d have poured a glass out. After a moment, he rises to his feet. “Peace be with you.”

Out of the corner of his eyes, he sees Unown begin to crowd his elephant. Its tusks batter them out of the way, its teleportation tricks a lot harder on something the size of an SUV. For a moment, he pauses to watch Xenon wreak her own brand of destruction. “And you’d be okay with that?” A bloodied hand reaches for his boot, streaking it red. Judging by the fact that half the soldier is gone, there’s only one kindness here. “Starting over?”[break][break]

Natsu crushes the man’s head with a powerful Hammer Arm.

He might not want them to die, but he could make sure they did it well. As he stares out at the sea of destruction, he sighs. He’s heard a lot about these guys. They’re made out to be the next apocalypse. But under all that is just people. “So much for DARK.” Maybe the mythicism around these guys was bunk.

Still, that does not make him incorrect. There is no point in hesitating when you’re halfway across the river. It is perhaps that order that drives him to close the gap between him and Hideo. That or his inborn impatience rearing its ugly head.Regardless of why, there’s a shirt in his hand and a kid dangling from it.

They’re retreating. Good. That is what Kazuya thinks as he sees the Glaceon disappear. If the navy-haired boy wanted to continue

He sees Noel charging at him, but he makes no move to run. “Misa!” The squirrel darts forward in a blaze of sparks, aiming to disrupt the other man. Kazuya plants his feet more firmly. The precipice they’re on could be disastrous if he shifted out of the way. His real goal isn’t to hurt this boy. It’s to make them think he would. A grunt pushes past his ruined tongue as Noel’s shoulder collides with his gut. “Nnnh!” Allowing himself to fall backward, he does his best to cushion both his and the brat’s fall.

There’s no real force applied as he lets Noel tear the kid away. Before he can decipher what the two are saying, the hairs on the back of his neck pick up. He can feel the charging Techno Blast beginning to charge. Turning to the Emolga, he nods. As the pair reach for the Elygem, Kazuya follows his boss’s leads and starts forward. “Volt Switch!” A sparking disc rockets toward the retreating pair—a parting, warning salvo.[break][break]

When the pair fade from view, Kazuya chuckles. He misses the real version’s warm timbre. “I must be getting soft.”

[attr="class","kazu2"]The woman’s words earn another acknowledging nod. That belief reminded him of an oxen, plodding forward across a barren field. If such beasts had the temperament of hibernating bears. But the Tauros did not plow for its own goals. It charged forward because someone cracked the whip. Not content to deem her crazy, the mercenary tried again. “I’m referring to the destination, not the path.” Certainly, these people were opposed to them, but that did not explain why she forced her way through.
[break][break]“Unown?” Kazuya laughs. Golden eyes probe the distant settlement, but he does not see any sign of those creatures. “There are only so many letters, Miss Xenon.”

Unown looked like something he could break with his teeth. His lips perk upward as he pushes himself back to his feet. Her orders seem sound, and he knows better than to argue with a woman like this.

“Understood.” A quick roll of his shoulders and he’s bolting after her. As to objections? “The plan’s simple enough!” He shook his head. “I will just be the one drawing fire.” As the larger target, he figured they’d fire on him first. From that distance, Xenon looked pretty harmless. You couldn’t see madness that far. Dropping his hands to his belt, the mercenary races forward.

A Seed Bomb explodes at his speed. But with a quick wipe of his face, he’s off again. For a big guy, he’s pretty nimble. Two of his party members join him as he flanks in. First is his Magnezone, Konsento. It draws in the metal projectiles fired, sending the bullets back in a haphazard spray. Second, is a giant wall of jolly Mamoswine. “Destroy the wall!” With the Magnezone acting as a shield, the pachyderm charges in. The structure shakes as one of the snipers teeters on her perch.

CRACK! Her neck snaps on impact. As he looks to the East, Kazuya cannot help but think her lucky. Something told him Xenon liked to play with her food.

It was heavier than he expected. “I see.” His attention would have already wandered in his younger years. ” That Kazuya seemed almost morally opposed to instructions. If it came with an instruction book, it’d be the first thing he’d throw out. Golden eyes shifted toward the chasm. “It seems were are in the clear.”

When indicated, Kazuya set about the work. After a moment, he found a spot for the sensor. Putting his strength to good use, the mercenary had it standing tall. Whatever calibration it needed, well, he’d leave that to her. His ham hands weren’t made for delicate work. “That should do it.” Some deep, manly instinct made him thump the thing. It gave a resonant gong as he stepped away.

There he found a glittering coin. A token of good fortune, perhaps?

He took watch as he gave her a few minutes to do her part.

As their conversation turned to the gloves, Kazuya moved to imitate Ameena’s movements. He laid his hand against a dark purple crystal. Within it, strange shadows raged. The dial on his wrists jumped up for a moment before dropping into normalcy. Her words of concern ended his premature wonder. “?” Even Natsu—trying to replicate the glove’s power with his paws—jerked up his head in surprise.

“What’s—” The rest of the noise from his modulator was drowned out by the sensor behind him. Eyes narrowed with determination, Kazuya gestured up the path. “Go!” He’d handle this. [break]
