There was a faint rumbling in the distance, probably as a result of the structures around them falling apart from the damage below. As far as he could tell, it wasn't a hoard of hostile Pokemon.

"Area seems safe enough. Let's keep goin'."

So far, the tree line in their zone was unscathed. But there was smoke in the distance, a definitive sign that there were Pokemon in trouble.

[attr="class","monty"]Donned in safety gear and a mask over his face, Montgomery felt quite out of place from his usual getup in the destruction of Sea Mauville. Reports stated that there were excess debris and other hazards along the shoreline, as well as throughout the inland areas where residential districts were built.

He noticed right away TOXIC SLUDGE oozing into the water, turning the once clear blue a murky, dampened purple.

"Hey, over here!" He waved down Gwyar Wledig, who was a short distance away from him. "Looks like some kinda poison-type released this shit into the water."

There was anxious mumbling in the air, children crying as they were directed away from their homes and onto the rescue ships that were sent to Sea Mauville to recover the individuals on the collapsing island. Montgomery's brows were furrowed, waving people along as he walked up to Navy.

"Who woulda thought somethin' like this would happen with war loomin' over us?" he muttered to his sheriff, watching as one of the structures began to crumble in the distance.

So, he untucked his shirt, pulled the right side up until it revealed the still rather freshly pink scar from the lead that he took encountering team Rocket with Jethro Haig. If she looked hard enough, she'd notice more faded scars across his skin, by far less noticeable than this one.

"Still got the bullet in me. Said that it didn't puncture anything, so it was more trouble digging it out than leavin' it in." Hurt like a bitch, though. "You know how to shoot?"

A DITTO wiggled in the distance, catching sight of Robin's FLUTTER MANE and TRANSFORMING into it. It didn't attack, rather, it just stared at the two of them. Montgomery tossed a ball at it.

"Steel types. Ground is also somethin' I like. But definitely steel, I'd say. I raised my SKARMORY from a hatchling. There's just somethin' about it..."

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery let out a boisterous laugh. "A story, huh? Yer bold," he claimed, lifting the pint glass to his lips to sip from. Though, she would probably be disappointed to know that his day didn't consist of any of those scenarios.

It was more along the lines of continuously moving around, ensuring that Pokemon weren't getting into city limits, and no Rocket individuals were out causing trouble. Not exciting, but it was still equally exhausting.

"Why don't I tell you-" As he began to speak, Montgomery's ROTOM phone began to ding loudly. He furrowed his brow, grabbing it and looking down. The nearby scanner seemed to have picked up wild Pokemon nearby.

"Damn it. Gotta draw them out." He pushed his beer away, standing up.

"I think it should be fine," he answered. "Yer only a few inches shorter than me. If ya ridden her, I think I'd be okay."

Though, he couldn't admit that he'd ever ridden any sort of Pokemon aside from horse-types. So, he wondered what kind of experience he'd be in for with the EEVEELUTION.

They were on their way through the woods, Josh listing information he had regarding the GALVANTULA. "Leave it to ya rangers to know all this sort of information. I'm more of the wing it as I go guy..."

thread summary: Montgomery arrives to Mossdeep on a tip off that team Rocket is causing trouble in the area. When he reports in, he finds himself confronted with an igniting flame, ameena abadi. He realizes that she's a member of team Rocket, and their game of cat and mouse has to come to an end.

The two dance between battling each other and fighting off threats in the midst of the interdream space. They encounter what their dream, being together, could look like. However, Montgomery makes the decision to stick with his will and renders Ameena unconscious, winning the battle but breaking both their hearts at the dawn of the war.[break]

why is it important?: Montgomery's past is something he has been running away from since he left Unova, and there's not much to know about it besides the obvious fact: he's a Rocket defector looking for something that he believes Hoenn can provide. ameena abadi/Ghostfinch gave me the opportunity to finally reveal something about him, even if it's just a small tidbit of information: his true name is Stetson, and he's searching for redemption. This was also his first time fighting against Rocket since his defection.

This thread is setting up the building blocks for future emotional conflict down the line for the up and coming deputy. It turns out Ameena is far more bewitching than he initially thought, and her pleas for him to step away from justice will become something that he cannot ignore in the future.

Inner conflict will continue to boil inside of him. Montgomery knows he can't run from the past or the future no matter how hard he tries. and Ameena is going to make sure of that, come the war and what happens after that. Now that he knows that she's a member of team Rocket, his ideals and beliefs will be tested. Will he become the man he hopes to be? Or will this one individual knock him down?

Ghostfinch made this thread so fun to write, and I cannot wait to continue writing with her. I'm very excited to see what happens between Montgomery and Ameena come the war and post-war.

Though, he had sat down and spoken some rather colorful language, so he couldn't blame them for engaging him conversation with him. He tapped his fingers along the side of the glass of his beer, offering her a small tip of his hat.

"Sorry for speaking crudely, ma'am. Though ya could say that, yeah."

He eyed the drink in her hand, raising his eyebrow up before asking, "same for you? Or are ya here just for a treat?"

He'd read over the mission information before he'd arrived, though he wouldn't say that he had such details as what sort of Pokemon they were going to have to deal with the deeper they went into the woods.

Leave it to a ranger to have those tools. He was just a cop, after all.

"Take me there? Unless ya consider a CLAYDOL a Pokemon suitable for transport, I don't say I do," he replied. "If ya got a spare, I wouldn't mind takin' it."

They would occur sporadically, and in his training, the officers were told to evacuate civilians from the area before the distortion was complete. Highly dangerous events that unsuspecting individuals could encounter were too much of a risk.

And, yet, it appeared he had fallen into another one of Hoenn's traps.

The girl, however, seemed almost totally unaffected by it, as did her Pokemon. Montgomery felt his skin crawling. "So, what yer tellin' me is we're not in Slateport no more?"

The WYRDEER alerted them of oncoming danger. Even he knew that much. Montgomery looked at her, nodding. "Couldn't suggest somethin' better myself. Lead the way. You seem to understand this more. I'll provide backup the best I can."

However, the drop of an axe stopped the two from escaping the area. A Pokemon that was familiar — and yet so different from anything he'd seen before — blocked their path. "The hell is that thing?" he muttered, reaching for a Poke ball and releasing SHARPEDO.
