[attr="class","monty"]The clock hit five, and Montgomery was off duty. He was never truly off duty, but at least he could take the badge off and go to the bars and have a beer or two. Hopefully he wouldn't get a call about impending doom or some weird shit going down while he drank or the hours after it.

He walked into one of the businesses he frequented. It also happened to have been the bar he had first met Navy in and where he'd hired him as deputy.

It had only been several months, but now it felt like years had gone by.

Sliding into a bar stool, Montgomery requested a pint, glass frozen, and the golden beer was slid his way. Letting out a relaxed sigh, he slouched forward as he took a sip.

"Fuck me sideways. About damn time."

where do we go now

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery had found in the past couple of months as Navy's deputy, Dewford had been quiet on his end of things. He took over patrols and assigning certain tasks if needed when the gym leader and Elite Four was about doing his business, and nothing was stirring. Not even a RATATA. It was quiet.

Too damn quiet.

Even petty crimes like robbery and the like were happening less frequently. Some of the other officers had their feet kicked back with a cup of coffee in hand, laughing about the quiet of the day.

That did it for him. The fucking "Q word." Montgomery had sent them a glowering look that shut them up, but he heard their pointed words as they left.

"Who made him king of the station?"

Breathing deeply through his nose and back through his mouth, he opted to take his patrol car out and survey the area. From prior experience, he knew when things were too quiet, bad shit was beginning to stir.

So he found himself around the outskirts of Dewford, in a wooded area, alone. A gun was pulled on him, offering no time for him to retaliate. "You're him, huh? The one that left Unova."

"I don't know a damn thing yer talkin' 'bout. Pointin' a gun at an officer ain't a good idea, though."

[attr="class","monty"]There was something hanging in the air between them. Jethro Haig had feelings about the dead he left unsaid, and Montgomery didn't know if he wanted him to pry or not. He stared at him as he called his RAPIDASH over.

So, Montgomery set the rake away, wherever the groundskeeper would want to pick it up later, and only nodded to him as the former Ranger disappeared.

"What the hell are ya hiding, Haig..." he muttered beneath his breath, grabbing the keys to his patrol car. Only moments later, he was gone as well, leaving the dead to rest.

Montgomery didn't have to point out to Jethro his past. He already knew it well enough. But, whether or not he considered the Unovan Rockets "friends," or even "family," was a reach. In the end, the newly appointed deputy had betrayed them.

He still put dirt over their bodies with his own hands.

"I can't tell ya how I felt about them, Haig. You know that already..." he muttered, looking toward the tombstones as he leaned against a pillar. "What we did — what I did, was considered work. And we knew we were gonna die. Some of my choices put my colleagues in the grave."

That was something he'd have to carry with him forever. He had blood on his hands he'd never be able to wash away. And his parents... well they were dead too. But they were erased from history. There was not point in bringing them up to Jethro.

"I'm sorry if I seem disrespectful to ya, but my stance was far different from yers."

Was Navy sweet to his troublemakers? Or did this woman have some sort of allure he wasn't able to detect?

With her hands coming behind her back, Montgomery was given the benefit of the doubt: he'd won the battle of words. "Atta girl. See, I can be damn reasonable, and if ya didn't throw a fuckin' net on me..."

Though he interrupted himself with a scoffing laugh, face plastered with the biggest, shit-eating smirk he felt in ages. "One of them folks, huh? You can have yer lawyers play 'round the law, Sweetheart, but ya know it still applies to ya whether yer in the knocker or not."

Montgomery offered her an almost sympathetic pout — almost — as his hand reached for her wrist. "Are you bribin' me? Alright, I'll bite: what's yer offer?"

Of course, that wasn't stopping the fact that his hand was inching to the cuffs, about to slap them on her wrists in a blink of an eye and bring her back to the jailhouse until her posse picked her up on some sort of bail.

Even if she was a pretty face.

He'd made a promise to himself to discard his criminal ties, to make a better name for himself. That meant following and upholding the law. Slapping the cuffs on her wrist was the correct answer.

"Kinda petty, if ya ask me."

So what did she want? He didn't ignore the look she gave him.

Montgomery laughed. "Hands behind yer back. If ya make things that easy, I'll make sure things go smoothly for ya on my side."

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery almost interrupted him to tell him he wasn't afraid of no damn Pokemon, and he'd sure as hell would go down in a fight. However, with the serious veil that his superior held around him, he shut his mouth, holding a grim look across his lips.

A morbid thought crossed his mind: how many floating bodies might belong to the Hoenn League?

"So lemme ask ya this: do y'all have any clue what's Rocket tryin' to do with that poison? I know you said somethin' bout 'neurotoxin.' So, what's the use?" he wondered aloud, though perhaps he had a vague idea.

He wanted to hear it clearly from Navy's mouth to make sure that he was fighting for the right side.

There was a cocky laugh. "Good thing's I'm a steel-type specialist," Montgomery answered rather proudly.

The scenery changed, from that harsh, alienating sunlight to the more calming allure inside the base. He felt the tension in his shoulders fall a bit, though he kept his wits about him. Ultra Sea was a foreign realm. It wasn't meant to exist, nor was he supposed to be here.

So when he heard a strange noise to his right side, Montgomery tapped Navy to quietly garner his garner his attention.

He pulled the metallic bird back into its ball, scrambling from his binds, as he stood a whole half a food taller than the woman he was about to slap handcuffs on.

"Really? And yer counterpart abandoned ya here to deal with repercussions alone?" Montgomery asked, taking slow steps to her as his hand rested at his side.

He couldn't help a smirk quirking on his lips.

"Some friend." Though, he'd been in that boat before. It wasn't like his former Rocket colleagues had been all that loyal with him before he'd left. "Though surely ya know this is poachin'... and a crime..."

Montgomery stopped before her. "And that's not somethin' I can let slide by easily."

He shouldn't be getting fucking chills down his spine.

"Then, have they gotten to the surface? And, what happened if it did?" he asked, moving past the NIHILEGO with his sheriff leading him. He offered the creature a scowl, then turning his head forward.

Dead SHARPEDOS, lining the land, encased in barnacles that seemed to tell the tale that they had been long dead. He wondered if this environment was even friendly for them.

"No. I'll do it. Someone's gotta, like ya said. So, whaddya say? Show me whatta do."
