Howard wasn't making sense. Her brow furrowed. "If it's been caught, how is it here?" Furthermore, how did someone catch a Giant? She knew some of the creatures of myth - of others' creation myths, not those of Hoyeon tradition - had paired themselves with humans, but she had yet to see one of the Giants do it. They were the hands of Earth Mother, keeping a balance in nature. [break][break]

And how did he have so many Stakatakas? [break][break]

Her heart caught in her throat as the electric Giant moved closer, but then Howard summoned a trick room and slowed everything down. Well, everything else. The Stakatakas seemed empowered. "Um. Is this the part where we run?" They wanted to try and subdue the Giant, to see how well they faired against it and if she could persuade it to help her wake the others and, consequently, use their collective prowess to return Hoenn's land to proper stewards who wouldn't poison it. [break][break]

"We can only stall it?" That, uh, sounded horrible. [break][break]

It grew several stories tall, towering over them. Clover had never seen the phenomenon before, but now that the being was so large, he recognized it. "It's one of Nature's Giants," he said with unabashed awe, even as an army of Stakataka began to close in on them all. "It's a Giant! We summoned one!" He was ecstatic. This was exactly what they needed. Summoning the Giants would force them to protect nature and destroy the incessant industrialization of Hoenn and, consequently, the conflict for it between the government and Rocket. [break][break]

They longed to see Hoenn returned to a natural state. They poked around the Stakataka that had been covering the two of them just in time to see a gigantic ball of electricity come their way. However, before it could strike, a thunder cage surrounded them. Clover looked up to see a Xurkitree by them, redirecting the electricity of the assault into the ground because of the cage. [break][break]

"Why's everything here defending us against the electric Giant?" It was a protector. Were the beasts here its enemy or were they following the cries of Howard's Stakatakas? "We need the Giant. We need to pull it out of the rift so it can save Hoenn!" They needed Howard on board with the plan.

This was lower pressure than fighting a beast. He was glad they could get a break from combat and instead focus on something more tangible as a contribution to the effort. He did, however, have little preference as to which they got familiar with. Forever paired with Hitoshi, he looked over to the more established Rocket and nudged him pleasantly. "Whatcha thinking?" They were both good choices. [break][break]

Clover had never driven anything, so a thorough vehicle inspection involving a test drive could be an issue. But they had only handled a handful of weapons, so there was something to learn regardless.

Shit. The League can hit like a force of nature. Clover burns through pokemon in the short time it takes to intercept Greyson and for Delarosa to pop out and assist. The League gets pushed back, but there's some damage to the security of the cave and Clover's only got their Archen holding on for dear life. It's humbling, as a nice way of putting things. [break][break]

"Sorry," Clover later apologizes, "I should've run for backup first." It was overzealous to take on someone famous for their strength, and the home court advantage had given just about nothing to them in terms of upper hand.

The flare blitz is an excellent move. It's heat wraps around Clover like a warm hug. It reminds him of home, of Fallarbor, of the tucked corner of a volcano. He cheers as the Arcanine moves quickly and spreads flame around the ruinous beast. "Nice one!" But the battle is far from over. They will continue to battle until it is called. [break][break]

Clover holds his passed out Oricorio in his cupped hands, his tired Archen recovering in his pokeball. "That was tough," they said, petting a finger against Oricorio's feathers. "I'm glad we weren't fighting for real. I've gotta practice and get some pokemon that are as strong as yours." Arcanine would fit in their collection... so long as it didn't feel tempted to chase their bird pokemon.

Huh. That was an interesting notion. She had met some pretty dumb people, though, so she wasn't sure human intelligence was the goal post. Yet, the legendary pokemon were supposed to guide people. At least, according to some creation myths. In her own, Kyogre, Groundon, and Rayquaza were vessels for the will of Sea Sister, Earth Mother, and Sky Sister respectively. Then, there were Nature's Giants, the Regis, who were guardians and sentries for the natural world. [break][break]

Unfortunately, those guardians had rested too long. The world was on fire. "The Rangers," they spoke slowly, trying to figure out a kind way to say it in case the kids were listening, "are like a bandage on a broken leg. They're a good organ in a sick body." The Rangers could only address symptoms, not cause. [break][break]

"They can't pull the problem out by the root." That's why she needed to create a catastrophe the Giants would have to respond to. She needed to force their hand and summon the attention of Earth Mother to fix things before the war split Hoenn in half.

"Fallarbor," Clover offers with a smile. "I'm Hoyeon, indigenous to Hoenn. This was my home before it was called that." His brow furrowed as Josh said he was from Johto. "Circumstances brought you to Hoenn specifically?" He didn't realize it was rude to pry. But Johto was a cool region. The people were friendlier than those in Kalos, or so his dad had always told him. It was kind of awesome that Josh was a newcomer to Hoenn and still made it to gym leader and champion. [break][break]

The tale of his Pyroar was unfortunate, but they didn't quite understand the importance of the hierarchy. "Aren't you king of the Pride?" The Hoyeon had a Sachem that led their sect. She hummed thoughtfully. "How do they prove themselves?" Oricorio left the contact of the Pyroar and fluttered up to Clover's shoulder to rub against her.

Clover's feet are glued to the ground at the sight of it, but Howard pulls him to safety. They feel like throwing up; the pokemon looks as if its commanding the storm, or heralding it, or a part of it. It's terrifying to stand before a pokemon so powerful that they need the protection of the otherworldly pokemon to protect them. [break][break]

"What is it? Who caught it? What is it?" They reach at the pokeballs on their belt as Archen pulls at her clothes anxiously. "I don't have any ground types. Um, Oricorio, Tropius, Scatterbug..." Shit, they were so unprepared for this expedition. They'd caught more pokemon just before the trip and hadn't brought them because they were too new to her team and might not know how to listen to her just yet. She'd thought they'd be liabilities. [break][break]

They stared at Howard. "How do we fight it?"

Their work on the wall went swimmingly. Clover filled the air with incessant questions but Howard's patience prevailed. She even pocketed a cool as stone stuck in the rock wall. [break][break]

But the storm that had been brewing had snuck up on them during their work. Clover brought Archen in close and stepped back from the wall, trying to ease the bird's anxiety about the storm. "We need to get out of here." He flinched as the winds hiked up, tossing a sharp shard that nearly sliced their face. It shattered against the rock wall, its dusting of shards exerting some sort of electrical surge. "What the hell was that?" [break][break]

They looked back at the storm and saw something large and yellow coming their way... a body of pure lightning? "What the hell is that?"

They had pep in their step as they walked along the wall. "Yeah? My Archen and yours can become besties." She was eager to give her pokemon some playdates. Her trusty companion was the culmination of her love of flying types and her inherent affinity for more grounded pokemon. [break][break]

"Okay," she said as she squared herself with the wall, "is rock slide going to be too dangerous for opening the wall up a bit?" They had less equipment than an average archaeologist site might have, but they had more pokemon. She wished she had more burrowers on her team.

He claps his hands together excitedly at the prospect of getting a buddy. "If you get one, we can match." They weren't sure about fossil freaks, but there was a bit of excitement in his hometown about fossils. Under Earth Mother, deriving pokemon from fossils was surely one of Her gifts for them. [break][break]

"Let's learn, then," she responded eagerly, hands on her hips as she let the Stakataka pass her. She walked in line behind it, keeping her eyes on it in case it tipped backwards. Being smushed by one would be less than ideal. "If we're quick, we can avoid that thunder storm or whatever that keeps inching forward." It loomed in the distance, promising trouble.
