He was blessed to have Marshadow at his side. Adrian glances towards it, but it remains stoic, its RUBY eyes sinking back into umbralis. 'TCH, ALRIGHT...'[break][break]

The experience leaves him rattled. It was not a guard, per se, but an opportunistic spirit that had nearly ended their quest. Its existence breathed life into the fact that they, too, might be trapped here in perpetuity should they make a single misstep. Disheartening was the short of it.[break][break]

"So... I guess we cross the bridge now?"[break][break]

A phantasmal lattice work, spanning the schism that led to nowhere, with a destination that was... unknowable.

Adrian's body rose, and while the spirit acclimated, it was indeed vulnerable—but that was Adrian's body all the same. Though Howard's gesture was perhaps justified, Adrian would not abide it—though he felt mostly powerless.[break][break]

He flung himself towards Regirock, strange ephemeral wisp that he was, and he felt a twinge as he passed through it. Something familiar. His arm felt a familiar ache, and he tries to recall a memory through the haze... But there is nothing.[break][break]

Emerging from Regirock, he sees that it has been momentarily stymied by his intervention. By now the spirit possessing his body had made it outside, but it would go no further once there.[break][break]

After catching up, Howard would find Adrian standing still, as if petrified. He casts a long shadow behind him, and from it a Marshadow spawns, the GLOOMDWELLER from earlier...[break][break]

...It stitches his shadow in place, anchoring him there, making this soul's escape from purgatory impossible.

When it finally remembers how it feels to have a mouth, it groans in a strange language, bargaining for its life in raspy, throaty yelps.[break][break]

As Adrian's wisp flutters down towards them at the base of the tower, its pleading becomes more desperate, but the outcome is unchanged.[break][break]

Marshadow expels the soul, and Adrian is able to return—in the aftermath, the other shade can be seen dissipating into shadow—its begging muted as it fades away. Adrian, gasping, inhales sharply.[break][break]

He feels the sweat and dread—his body floods with adrenaline—and his heart hammers away, a lingering aftereffect of the shade's terror.[break][break]

"Uuuuuwaaaah—...!" He feels exhausted, and catches his second wind while Marshadow, Howard and Regirock look over him—perhaps in judgment. F#ck man, that was awful...[break][break]

"...Let's agree to never do that again."[break][break]

He throws back an accusing look at Howard—who might've had him killed moments ago—not quite ready to have that conversation yet.[break][break]

...This damned bridge had better be worth all of the trouble...[break][break]

It was too soon to CELEBRATE their progress.[break][break]

He'd been grabbing at more of the debris, trying to clear some of the roadways and work space when he and the dump truck began to move through a more advanced section of the Petalburg development. Team Rocket was already busy erecting buildings for what would surely serve as a firebase as they pushed for another land grab on HOENN. Daydreaming of their dystopia...[break][break]

That was how he'd been caught unawares. Plucking more ruined debris from the ground, carrying splintered plywood with crooked nails, bundling it in his arms and hurriedly making for the truck—that's when they'd run into each other—very literally. Uoof—and then a clatter of wood.[break][break]

Her pain is audible, but Adrian is rather stoic—he is fortunate to be wearing a better class of footwear. The lumber rolls off, bouncing off the ground before the weight is enough to bother him overly. It smarts, but not nearly as much as the puncture on his forearm, which he grabs at.[break][break]

He breathes out something almost like a hiss at the biting, stinging that trickled out ichor.[break][break]

"Ahhh, that really bites," he speaks through clenched teeth, short on breath.[break][break]

The familiar feeling of resentment and blame wells up—but he manages to quell it. It's like as not they're trying to pitch in with the effort, despite a lack of qualifications, same as he was. They were able-bodied—even something like this wouldn't set them back enough to matter.[break][break]

"Are you okay?" He's able to get a good look at her finally—after she recites every swear word known to man—and he's hit with pangs of guilt.[break][break]

He seemed almost like a child, in the way his enthusiasm shined through, lacking the indifference of an adult to such formalities. This enthusiasm of theirs doubled down when he allowed them a moment to rave on about the discovery and the theoreticals of mega evolution, in detail... It was almost annoying to listen.[break][break]

"Yeah, sure, so let's go," he spoke.[break][break]

More than that, it was heart-wrenching to think Razz as someone clawing back at their old valor.[break][break]

This is what Theo Beckett had reduced him to.[break][break]

The look of uncertainty on their face isn't lost to Adrian—but Raziel is a fine enough name, and he hates all the formalities. It would be better to be on a first name basis, anyway. Or so he believed.[break][break]

"So, do you think you could do it?"[break][break]

Adrian brandished the mega keystone along his wristband, before pushing through to the training grounds. For the moment it was empty—it was an unusual hour, and many still nursed injuries in the aftermath of the war only some handful of days prior. So they could afford to let loose here.[break][break]

"Or don't you know where to begin?"[break][break]

For all that his book had described—origins of stones, the nature of the transformation, and myriad scholarly details—none of it truly suggested how to invoke such a force. At best, it might have loosely attributed the power to bonds.[break][break]

It was something humans had only been able to guess at—though with recent discoveries, they were breaking ground into the territory of aura.[break][break]

It's rare a PROFESSOR could do it themselves. It was something that had to be felt out.[break][break]

Adrian plucks a pokeball from his belt, releasing a Copperajah outfitted with a mega stone.[break][break]

Allowing himself in, Adrian readied the bundle of textiles and linens in his arms, which were loosely folded. He wasn't sure what to do with it, exactly. It seemed too important to throw into a hamper for a normal trip to the laundromat.[break][break]

"I was hoping you had an idea how I should care for my SYGNA SUIT," he said as he approached her. There were ulterior motives, of course—but this was the most formal. At most she might quip him for being so senseless. He could handle that, if it came.[break][break]

It was his metaphorical foot in their door.[break][break]

"Do we store or handle them differently?" By his tone and readiness to surrender the fabric, his question seems genuine, and he waits for a moment before his attention naturally drifts away from the conversation—to the piles of research and documents—before finally settling his eyes on the idle UNOWN-K.[break][break]

No questions, no statements—just his JUDGEMENT, a thought provoking stare...

The wisps moved whimsically at the suggestion it wasn't him. He couldn't blame Howard for being so cautious, however. It was admittedly very reckless, and even he wasn't sure of the state of his body—if it had survived.[break][break]

But they had to move forward to get anywhere. The Border had a way of trapping you in its ANOMALY, once you entered, but it was fair enough to leave ways it—but it was the nature of guarding something, to leave all the exits locked.[break][break]

'Geez man, when you say it like that...' Howard was another one of those waxing poetics. He could appreciate the gesture however, but it made it a little more awkward as he drifted towards the flame, and the smoldering wisp within.[break][break]

As he passed through, to the pit of cinders, the other wisp moved suddenly. It brushed past him—and in that moment he saw something—though it was too brief. It felt like that feeling before you slip from a dream, and into a nightmare.[break][break]

The wisps light the fire and the brazier burns brightly, restoring the pass. Dense fog rolls away, making the void below known. And moreover, a wisp hurriedly rushes past Howard, and towards Adrian's body. It was indistinguishable from his.[break][break]

Adrian felt despair—and then roiled with rage.[break][break]

Even so, the wisp manages to free itself from the fire, though this happens only after Howard assuredly turned his attention back to Adrian, where it lie face down in the dark below...[break][break]

Adrian stood up, but it wasn't him.

Yet he hated to see Rowan like this. Defeated. He choked down the empathy, and tried to ignore the tremble in their syllables as they sounded out the words. But he still had to listen and bear it.[break][break]

"I don't think there's anything out there for me, Row," he nearly sobbed back to him.[break][break]

"I think this is all I have left." Him and a wish; Howitzer whined at Rowan's withdrawal.[break][break]

He felt like he was spread thin—he could understand his senses—but the feedback couldn't be used in a meaningful way. He absorbed the world around him, unable to interface with it.[break][break]

It was like he was dead. But his body was alive, and Howard's voice called him.[break][break]

The wisps shuddered, a low pulsing glow emanating in the dust and the dim as Adrian began to flit slowly towards the tower's uppermost reaches. Where he went, the broken planks regrew, ephemeral but very much solid, though they remained translucent to the naked eye. They would be better served showing a bit of trepidation, but Howard had to keep pace.[break][break]

Why would anyone go through the trouble of this trick? As they cross the threshold, Adrian can see only a brazier smoldering with a dying EMERALD emanation, and an uninhabited room. Tatters of textiles, what might have once been furnishings.[break][break]

To ADRIAN, the fire was another wisp. He doesn't bother reading into it, beyond that. The answer seems simple, to him. He drifts closer...[break][break]

To HOWARD, the cinders had nearly gone out. As before with the stairs, the glow of the torch reveals what once was: An apparition in strange textiles gestures to the brazier, to rekindle it...[break][break]

THE ANSWER WAS IN FRONT OF THEM.

Adrian wasn't fighting for anything, least of all the glory of Team Rocket. It was a natural byproduct of opposing the League that had affronted him, and ultimately forced him to seek asylum from a government that did not respect his individual liberties. He wasn't a fanatic or some villain.[break][break]

At the time, it just made sense. Now?[break][break]

That was something for him to decide.[break][break]

"Hm?" Adrian could see what they'd reached for, and recoiled slightly at the realization. The flame was unnatural, and their glow was reminiscent of the apparitions of this damned plane—and particularly of the bridge from before...[break][break]

"...Can we use this to pass the bridge, maybe?" Adrian seemed to think so.[break][break]

Wrenching the torch from its sconce, Adrian's hand felt firm against the beacon, even as his body slumped forward, collapsing. Oh shit.[break][break]

Two wisps smoldered faintly over the fainted vessel, one more noticeably dim. Adrian...[break][break]

Mortal hands could not carry the flame, but it illuminated the path. What to do, then...?[break][break]

Adrian remained cognizant and sapient, though he had no mouth through which to speak.

Would they do the same for him? It doesn't seem believable, from his perspective. But then, he's always played the fence... Maybe that is truly the reason he left Bryan. He wasn't willing to stick out his neck for anyone but himself. Did that make him a coward? Or was he grossly self-centered?[break][break]

Scum. Dregs. Words Adrian doesn't identify with.[break][break]

But if he looks at it from any other angle, it's incontrovertibly true. His bias was showing.[break][break]

Once upon a time, he might have believed they would make that play for his sake—but not anymore. Expendable was a word for someone like him, that's why he played everything so close to the chest... That's why he looked after his own.[break][break]

He didn't exactly believe in what Howard said—but he didn't reject it, either. Again, he found himself on that dreadful fence. Not committing.[break][break]

They scale the watch tower as best they can, but eventually reach an impasse: The dusty, tattered timber at the foot of the tower was evidently the collapsed staircase heading to the height of its spire. They could go no further, physically. A torch's flame weakly licked at the air from its sconce against the interior masonry...[break][break]

"Always another dead end," he growls.[break][break]

Where the light touches him, his body seems to emanate something, like that of a wisp. It wasn't something he would notice—but Howard might.[break][break]

He returns a hollow stare. As Raziel explains Theo's involvement, he begins to see the bigger picture—but he doesn't know enough to truly understand... It's a bewildering experience. It's sickening. His guts twist into knots.[break][break]

"Right, Johto..." How could this happen? It must've been some sort of trick. Too cruel.[break][break]

He tries to speak plainly through a guilty, anguished expression. He's at least aware that, should he have any hand in foiling this little plot of THEO BECKETT's, there would be consequences. He's forced to play along.[break][break]

Razz was Team Rocket's WILDCARD now.[break][break]

"That... won't be necessary."[break][break]

It's an awkward silence that falls over their exchange, but Adrian is quick to conjure anything up on the fly, to avoid having to run his mouth recklessly: "So what brings you here?"

"...No." It was something that simply hadn't manifested itself. He didn't have an answer why he hadn't helped. It was all over faster than he'd expected. That is precisely what he kept repeating to himself, and to others. An excuse.[break][break]

There was Declan rallying them after Kyogre—Bryan himself reinforcing the Dyna Tree—and he'd been smack dab in the middle, trying to satisfy two different directives. Holding back Paxton's Mega Mawile, while Furor raged towards the SAPPHIRE leviathan. Stretched so thin.[break][break]

No wonder they blame me.

I'd probably blame me, too.

Adrian was stuck. He needed a way around this.[break][break]

Thankfully at that moment, the Marshadow that had been watching over him stirred from out of his shadow, which seemed to disappear as it rose from out of the cimmerian shade. Wordlessly, it pointed towards something of a watch tower, where atop was a brazier that had gone out. Its fist seems to roil like a raging fire, and then it returns it to its side before returning Adrian's shade and disappearing from their sight.[break][break]

Anything to get over this slump...

"...Guess that's our next step," Adrian murmured before setting out at a brisk pace, to avoid ruminating any further. It was done.
