"Yeah." Adrian offered him shakily, though he seemed to take it in stride. A shiver rolls over him briefly, and then he's himself. Able to ignore the brush with death.[break][break]

"I couldn't really say," Adrian mumbled.[break][break]

Much had happened. Somewhere in that throng, Bryan had gotten plucked and whisked away, before any could intervene. Even those who pursued him would've had a hard time getting past—"That wolf with the sword," he spoke.[break][break]

"I've seen it before—something to do with Galar. It was running protection, nobody made it to him who tried."[break][break]

Adrian gives Howard a look—was it enough?[break][break]

His eyes drew low to the ground before glancing sideways, his brow hardening.[break][break]

"...Jayden tried blaming me over it."[break][break]

Adrian doesn't want to believe it. But he was there and did nothing. He was there for Regirock, and it meant nothing; he feared he was quickly becoming irrelevant, maybe even weak.[break][break]

He yearned to remain in the sun.[break]

Maybe this was simply the form it took to be perceived, and its true nature was unknowable—but Adrian felt that a small gesture as this was necessary to soothe the more troubled spirits passing through.[break][break]

Closure couldn't be found in a swathe of nothing.[break][break]

The path revealed itself when one was ready.[break][break]

Until then, they walked an endless but familiar expanse that could manifest their thoughts, perhaps designed to help them find that something they need before—before letting go. Surrendering to nirvana and reaching enlightenment. That is to say, returning from whence you came—to the esoteric origin...[break][break]

"Perhaps you're right though." Adrian pushes through the shroud after a brief respite, and his shadow seems to lead the way. As they move forward over dusty walkways, he loses Howard for a moment in his peripheral.[break][break]

"...We won't find Bryan here." It seemed that jayden cross had not yet relayed the information, perhaps awaiting the next summit—knowing what an uproar it would cause might go against Declan's ceasefire. Bryan had been abducted, not killed, as far as anyone knew.[break][break]

"He was taken prisoner by the League, defending Xerneas..." Adrian only barely misses his shadow stopping short as he walks beyond it—and nearly over the edge.[break][break]

'Woah!' He cried out before a flailing arm strikes out for a rail, which seems to cause the bridge to shimmer into a corporeal, visible form whose glow pierces the fog and illuminates the schism he very nearly flung himself into. Yikes...[break][break]

"Phew." The bridge ahead of them seems to go on forever, and though it remains suspended in air, it's uncertain whether it can hold their weight or remains only as an apparition... He places a foot forward, and it seems to take, but the glow is muddled by the contact. "I don't trust it..."[break][break]

Call it a SIXTH sense—the bridge would not hold.

It didn't matter how he'd felt about it. Sootopolis was a shared city, now. Though he might've one day hoped for the League to reclaim this place... He had never quite imagined it like this, and with him still on the wrong side. It's a troubling turnabout.[break][break]

It's easier to sleep it off. A tangle of hair rests against the arm of a couch, while Adrian himself retreats into a fetal defense curl, the rather plain sweats and hoodie making him hard to distinguish. The hum of his phone startles him, rousing his attention as he shifts upright...[break][break]

It's a message from Rowan Wrynn; it turns out to be a MEME when it loads, and Adrian is able to manage a faint chortle despite himself...[break][break]

They had been indelicate enough to rattle Adrian from his melancholy. The moment Jayden grabs at his collar, he wears a demanding sneer. It was not done by his hand, had not been his charge—yet they readily looked for a place to rest their blame.[break][break]

ADRIAN RESENTED THAT.[break][break]

An arm raised diffuses the hold, but Jayden just as quickly latches onto that. They're determined to hold him accountable. It's not enough to cause any harm. But the act compromises the admin's reputation, where Adrian was concerned. His arm tenses, but he doesn't rip it away just yet—[break][break]

"Don't you dare blame me," he barked, ripping his arm away from them and clenching a fist, poised to retaliate—but only out of necessity.[break][break]

"I did my part. When the STONJOURNER fell, I retreated to the city—"Adrian gestures to the Dyna Tree"—and went to PROTECT the tree, per his orders."[break][break]

He had been impeded by League operators and forced to split his resources on two fronts: Defending the tree(s), and staying Kyogre's assault. Neither endeavor was something he could've achieved alone, even under ideal circumstances—and it had been far from ideal.[break][break]

"We were caught up in a skirmish around the tree—if the BEASTS can't look after themselves, how is it I'M to blame?" They were elites, cherry picked for their admirable qualities: Capable... and loyal.[break][break]

Jayden was just going to have to learn to accept that it was Bryan's choice, and no one's fault.[break][break]

Bryan had fallen because he could not defend both, and still save himself.[break][break]

His teeth grit as he prepares a remark.[break][break]

"If you make this mistake again, I'll not be so kind a second time," he managed to spit back, seething at the audacity of their assertion. Adrian would remember this...[break][break]

He waited to see what else Jayden might try.[break]

"You really think it's scary?" Maybe that was the right word for it. Adrian could see a sort of wild beauty to it—but maybe that was his privilege—he would learn to dread it sooner or later.[break][break]

He certainly had no shortness of dread anticipation for the vile creature that roamed its skies, challenging their mortal presence.[break][break]

"Closed?" As if it were a store. Re-sealed, he realized. The realm would always exist, and reveal itself to those as passing on, but it was never meant to be traipsed upon by living. This is true, and he concedes to Howard's point, although...[break][break]

It wasn't going to fix itself.[break][break]

Whatever had revealed this place would need to be mended—and so far, none had come forth to fix that problem. In fact, many exploited this opportunity rather than see the obvious risks in it. Or maybe it was just that they ignored them.[break][break]

...Or didn't know enough to help.[break][break]

In that moment, he feels guilty. Accountable.[break][break]

"Do you think it could be that... the Border is collapsing into some place else?" Maybe Howard knew more, or had shared more with others; maybe he could explain this place better than he could. Adrian did not believe it changed in this way of its own accord, not when it seemed to cause such a breakdown in its environment. It always seemed in disarray.[break][break]

They had no basis or standard of comparison for the Border: Whether it adjusted to accomodate an influx of spirits, or had simply always been this way, or had never been this way—it was difficult, maybe impossible to make those determinations.[break][break]

At best, he could gamble that what he'd first seen coming here was its natural state:[break]

The interdream zone had been made to bleed out across Hoenn. The Ultra Deep Sea could be accessed from Dewford. Nothing was as it should be, as it was. It was like someone was manufacturing a wholesale collapse of the Hoenn region. He likened it to how the DRK TRIAD had attempted trapping them within a sort of hemisphere, before altering METENO's course for collision. In a way, it had been FATHER WINTER that created this primal point rift to begin with...[break][break]

"What if it's been slipping away this whole time...? And in which direction?[break][break]

While imparting these thoughts to Howard, he glowers at the ground, noticing a barely discernible shadow. As he avoids their eyes, he stares back into it, and the umbra deepens. The head seems to adjust faintly, as though dipping its chin up and down, almost as if nodding back.[break][break]

It's subtle enough that he pays it no mind.

Or maybe he knew more than Adrian. But he seemed to be gathering information and making the rounds—and Adrian felt something like this would have been addressed swiftly, if it were known. Probably.[break][break]

He still felt to be a stranger among them. It was a wonder they afforded him any trust or agency.[break][break]

He can't have been the only one to notice—but perhaps this was the sort of thing to get swept up in the cascade of developments washing over Sootopolis that day. He tries to pull himself together rather than droning off—though he remains somewhat apathetic about the situation.[break][break]

They might've already released them.[break][break]

No need to be delicate—he simply offered the truth. Mayhaps Jayden would rebuke him with some plain fact and dispel any concerns...[break][break]

But he braced for the anger and incredulity expected, knowing full well he could've said something sooner... And why hadn't he?[break][break]

His excuses would be paltry and paper-thin, and his face was already drained of color. Again, he seemed to avoid Jayden's eyes... He felt cold.

There was a phrase that echoed through Adrian's mind sometimes as they worked, something that had previously bothered him about Declan: Pokemon exist for the glory of Team Rocket.[break][break]

That's how he remembered it sounding, anyway.[break][break]

But in these moments, he could understand the sentiment—though it still disagreed with him. As Team Rocket worked on salvaging what buildings they could, many—perhaps most—were declared inhospitable and condemned. They possessed myriad means to topple the compromised infrastructure—demolition crews were in no short supply—but they lacked the crucial means to rebuild: Acquiescing the raw materials to begin.[break][break]

Thankfully, he was something of a collector.[break][break]

While pokemon and trainers coordinate taking down ruined buildings and infrastructure, Adrian, in a modest show of BRILLIANCE, has taken their motif to heart—and relied on his pokemon to hasten this daunting task ahead of them.[break][break]

Klink, Klang and Klinklang are affixed to trash compactors to help break down raw materials into a more convenient form, able to be stockpiled and transported to the various facilities that might be able to repurpose the dismantled resources: What they couldn't reshape, they could burn for energy.[break][break]

Adrian supervises one such truck outfit: After shoving the waste into the back of the truck, KLINKLANG GEAR GRIND to break down the materials, and RECYCLE it into condensed 'blocks', which are stored conveniently in the truck bed as it passes through ruined streets, eventually heading towards a depot to be sorted.[break][break]

Swiping at his brow, he wishes he'd been able to train even more pokemon, to use their STRENGTH for such an arduous task—but there is an honesty in working beside his pokemon that comforts him. He felt less guilty this way...

It was sometime after the ceasefire. Adrian has been drifting around the city, decompressing from the conflict. It all seemed so pointless... Either wage the WAR all the way through, or don't start it at all—the casualties of the day hardly seemed necessary, given the circumstances.[break][break]

Not that he was privy to the details to make those judgments. But when he thought of Bryan being snagged up and run away—only for the ceasefire to stop them dead in his tracks—he wondered what they would do if it were someone like him, captured and whisked away... Nothing?[break][break]

It was best it had been bryan delarosa, in that way; but it opened them up to some vulnerabilities. It would need to be addressed.[break][break]

There was much and more going on that Adrian wasn't even sure what came next. His receiver was lit up with static and garbled voices ever since the battle had started—most of it went over his head. He just kept wandering 'round the city.[break][break]

Where was Rowan? Why is this what he'd wanted?[break][break]
