He didn't like the way Raziel had said tool, but he skips over it. It's not strange for someone in their line of work, it's a personal vindication. Instead, he fixates on the tera orb glowing in their hand, and the prismatic shimmer of Bulbasaur.[break][break]

"That's the principle of it, yes." Adrian awaits the demonstration, curious to see if it'd work. When it does, it's obvious which type Bulbasaur had an affinity for—though how it acquired this nature was a mystery.[break][break]

"It's a fire type, at least defensively," he relented. There was more to the augmentation—it wasn't something he could teach—but naturally Raziel followed up with the next question.[break][break]

What did he really know? He wracked his brain anyway, clawing for scraps of knowledge...[break][break]

"Hmm... I don't think it can learn any fire move, but..." Alright, Adrian relented, grabbing at his cellular device and tapping away for educational purposes. Eventually he settled on a familiar page, and began reading with a slight murmur, enough for Raziel to get a hint before he'd even spoken the words aloud.[break][break]

"Oh okay, so yeah—terastallized pokemon can use a move called... TERA BLAST." Adrian's face went sour with disapproval. How creative of them...[break][break]

He looks up to Raziel questioningly.[break][break]

"You gonna give it a go?"[break][break]

Adrian is lucky not to be tagged as something whizzes through the air, striking a tree. The old, rotten wood is shredded in a spray of splinters. Adrian looks at the damage, then in the opposite direction—Where'd it come from!?[break][break]

He picks a tree—and isolates it from the rest.[break][break]

Adrian winds back his arm, allowing it to whip forward, pitching the ball towards where the shot might've come from, leaning with the throw and finding himself balancing on a single leg. As he returns to poise, the pokeball careening through the air approaches the tree, bursting open to reveal his gyarados, FUROR, clad in crimson..[break][break]

"TAKE IT DOWN, FUROR!"[break][break]

Its undulating body coils around the tree, struggling against the roots, but managing to topple it after wrestling it from the ground. The sound of groaning timber and a storm of leaves can be heard as the tree falls in the forest.[break][break]

"I didn't think you bastards were scummy enough to use guns," he called out in a taunting gesture, from a position of seeming safety, since he considered the threat subuded. He searches for the culprit...[break][break]

He hadn't realized Raziel was waiting for permission to eat. Of course everything was self-serve, but he might not know that. He gave a light nod, gesturing to the table's assortment of delicacies, various sauces and punches.[break][break]

"It's common for big events like this to have catering," he explained. Everything was free, though there were certain soft boundaries that one should acknowledge... "Paid out of the host's pocket—whoever that is."[break][break]

They hadn't been welcomed by a human, yet.[break][break]

"Just remember to be a gracious guest, and don't hog everything."[break][break]

Adrian plucked at a slice of cheese and a salami. Something familiar. He hoped it encouraged Raziel to indulge himself more liberally, rather than let the opportunity go to waste. "Mm..."[break][break]

He would placate himself with a small square of CAKE in the meantime. Or at least try to.[break]

Adrian crosses the threshold less than amused at their otherwise accomodating hosts: Ghosts... There was no reason to trust them anymore than the strangers wearing masks.[break][break]

What's more, he realizes just how out of touch he is with most of them. A simple venetian mask was all it took—and the faces of Team Rocket allies were lost in the crowd. Such a small, insignificant act of concealment—it was telling.[break][break]

And yet it was liberating, despite being a wallflower. And so he naturally gravitated towards the catered services, happening to catch someone wearing a paper bag ducking away...[break][break]

He was oblivious to the identity of howard slayte, the paper bag man extraordinaire.[break][break]

"...Who do you think you're avoiding?"[break][break]

If anything, it drew attention to them.[break][break]

...Which was proven when someone muttered his name questioningly. Pfffft.~ He stifles the laughter with a raised hand, though it's almost cruel how quickly they lost their anonymity.[break][break]

Adrian, clad in the black luster of a beaked venetian mask, would turn his attention to Absinthe Blackwood and lock eyes before shaking his head with his sharp disapproval. Only to be distracted by an assortment of cocktail shrimp. ...Just one couldn't hurt...[break][break]

"Mmm.~" He's reminded of—of the Star Soiree. His arm had been less vacant, then. And he might've had more reason to smile.[break][break]

He observes the cacophony, listening for the familiar voice and gait of Rowan Wrynn.[break][break]

If he was here, Adrian would know.[break]

Adrian evaluates the depiction, realizing it's a Toxtricity. It was definitely something they could find in Hoenn. There wasn't much you couldn't.
What's more, he happened to own one himself. It'd been awhile since he'd seen Riff.[break][break]

At least one of them was smiling. And naturally, the feeling was a bit infectious. Hm.~[break][break]

"Oh yeah, I have that one too. I don't really use it anymore, though," he admitted. Riff had been a pokemon heavily involved in his time with TERAVOLT. He didn't know how it'd actually felt about his falling in with Team Rocket... He tried not to strain the relationship unnecessarily by forcing the issue.[break][break]

"So from what I'm given, it allows you to change a pokemon's type," Adrian began. It's also required to have a pokemon imbued with a TERA CRYSTAL of the corresponding type, but it's all just details to be glossed over. It does limit them from a practical demonstration, however. Unless...?[break][break]

"Try withdrawing Bulbasaur into the tera orb," Adrian suggested, curious to see what might come of it. Quite possibly nothing.[break][break]

If it didn't work, they'd try another method.[break]

As Adrian tends to his garden, changing over the Salacs and replacing some Grepas—and doting over his latest Passho bush—a Bisharp approaches. It's only because of Vileplume that he is made aware of its approach.[break][break]

It threatens him promptly, sparing no time. Adrian is quick to grab a pokeball, unleashing a Copperajah to obstruct its path. They would have to be careful not to trample anything, though...[break][break]

"...You don't want this." A berry might've been a delicious prize, but what Adrian had in store would not suite the creature: Pawning it off to Team Rocket, or the Black Market, were ultimately his only options. Or crushing it enough to ensure it'd never return. It was all so cruel.[break][break]

The Bisharp did not seem deterred.[break][break]

"Raj, start off with HEAT CRASH." Its body would careen towards the brush in a blazing trail, catching the creature in the swathe of its trunk.[break][break]

It had chosen the latter, so forcing his hand.[break][break]

"I know it is." Adrian's voice is haunted by the revelation, by the revenant before them. Though DEREK HOFFMAN does not seem to pay them any mind, he is there—if Adrian but walked over, he could reach out—speak to him.[break][break]

He's not sure if he should, though. Apprehension is the garrote that kills opportunity.[break][break]

"Why... Why is he here?" It was wrong.[break][break]

There's a tinge of distress, but the question is rhetorical—mostly. Adrian and Howard, keenly aware of this realm's purpose, realize Derek must be serving some sort of perdition—or struggling to accept his end, and move on peacefully. One can only pity him, as they might themselves.[break][break]

Adrian looked over to Howard, his look sympathetic—but he wears a knowing frown...[break][break]

This was not the mission they'd embarked upon.[break][break]

"I didn't mean—" Howard had already made up his mind, which was well enough. Adrian would follow six paces behind, to allow the bridge to disperse their weight. He rather wished Howard would withdraw his Regirock, however.[break][break]

But it was best to keep their guard up, and so reluctantly he abided it, though he would curse them both if the bridge gave in beneath the burden of a giant's cumbersome weight...[break][break]

"You've got that right." Never again, he thought to himself. As if he could help it.[break][break]

Below them was a ravine roiling with despondent souls. He can only imagine how many have fallen here, just shy of absolution. He wondered what they had been pursuing, when they'd crossed this threshold... Was it anything like their journey now? Surely they must've had more ambition...[break][break]

Mercurial pools oozing with foreboding, a jutting peak that outstripped any other landmark—this place was monumental, even for the Border. But its significance was lost on Adrian. Whether Howard knew its purpose, or kept an inkling to himself, mattered little. ...It was deathly quiet here.[break][break]

"...Is this it?" Adrian sounded unimpressed. So far as he could tell, there was no other obvious exit, no other path forward. The mountain's peak stood before them, insurmountable. Too steep for them to climb—the fall would break them.[break][break]

It was an end to all paths. Before Adrian can express further disappointment, he catches sight of a wisp—and the ephemeral form it resembles—voicing an audible gasp—...Derek Hoffman?[break][break]

Ah well. He would have to work towards reclaiming that lost glory, Adrian decided, but it would be well worth it. The notion hits a little too close to home for him, though...[break][break]

"That's okay, you gave it your best." Adrian promptly snatched it away from them, returning it to its socket before giving Copperajah an expectant look. The pokemon and him were in sync, but it took more than the intent to mega evolve to actually force the transformation.[break][break]

"Usually when I tap into it, there's a strong desire—to PROTECT or to DESTROY." Adrian raised his wrist, and even though they both expected Copperajah to evolve, it wasn't quite enough to provoke the change. Which might've been a little disappointing.[break][break]

Adrian thinks back to a fateful encounter with REGIROCK, and a selfish desire to prove himself—to take his revenge. To destroy... He pumps a fist unwittingly, and the keystone crackles.[break][break]

The change takes hold, and Copperajah becomes something else entirely: An immutable wall, with the power to crush those before it. That is the desire made manifest—that is the MEGA EVOLUTION Raziel will one day wield.[break][break]

"See? It takes a little umph, sometimes," he says to give Raziel some reassurance in himself. He would learn to harness it—someday soon. It was only a matter of time.[break][break]

The strange Bulbasaur returns, and Raziel is quick to turn his attention to the belongings. It's good to know he's kept most of his things—although passing strange his pokemon have been lost. Perhaps they would snap him out of this flimsy hypnosis Theo Beckett had put him under...?[break][break]

"You've got a solid trove there. But yeah, you'll need a mega stone for your pokemon, too." The sygna suit isn't easily identified, though he wagers a guess. He doubts Raziel can use it as he is, so he glosses over it, instead choosing to fixate on the Z-Ring.[break][break]

"So, that Z-Ring is for using Z-Moves. It's like mega evolution—you should have an established bond with a pokemon to use it, but I think it's less crucial." Certainly a spare Z-Crystal would make do. But it was all the same if Raziel didn't have a pokemon who could use them yet.[break][break]

The Tera Orb he recognizes, as well.[break][break]

"That pokeball-thing is a Tera Orb—I haven't gotten one for myself yet, but I was going to reach out to Naomi about one soon." There were still things Adrian needed to learn, as well—trainers were lifelong learners, after all. Always honing skills.[break][break]

It's all a distant memory from another life—hazy and incomplete recollections—but they're there for him to scratch at the surface, like picking scabs. She didn't say much, though he would be biting his lip if his toe'd been bashed up, so he doesn't judge. It's convenient, then, that they have a Lucario to patch them both up. He wouldn't have minded healing up the old-fashioned way, but he is thankful regardless for their intervention.[break][break]

He gives his arm a test flex, curling his knuckles into a fist, watching the individual tendons tighten. Nothing seemed to hurt. He offers them a faint smile and a thumb's up to reassure them.[break][break]

"Better. I should probably have some gloves on if I'm going to be handling all this scrap," he admitted, hoping they didn't entirely blame themselves for the accident. He'd do what he could to avoid another misshap—she would doubtlessly do the same, going forward.[break][break]

As he eyes her curiously, he finds himself transfixed on those strange, violet irises of theirs.[break][break]

Adrian's brow shot up. So he doesn't have his other pokemon? The hole just went deeper... But he was prepared to see Raziel fail—it wasn't as though he expected them to whip out a mega stone and pull it off without a hitch. Although, he might've expected it—once upon a time. Oh well...[break][break]

"Yeah, that's the accepted theory."[break][break]

"...Hmmm, no, Bulbasaur won't work for this." For more reasons than one. Raziel knew enough to understand a bond was needed—but what did that entail, specifically? He wanted Raziel to understand that it was more than friendliness, or a history with a pokemon.[break][break]

It was a shared feeling—a visceral experience.[break][break]

He hands Raziel his own mega keystone, popping it out of its socket. The pearlescent shimmer, and a rainbow hue like an oil splatter over water—it was definitely the genuine article, if a bit weathered. It probably felt unspectacular in his hand. Copperajah responded with a light trumpet, but otherwise remained where it had stood.[break][break]

"Why don't you try it with 'Raj, if you don't have anything you can use yourself?" Raj seems to once again trumpet in response—it's an amiable creature, hardly disagreeable—but that doesn't mean it'll be easy.[break][break]

In fact, it shouldn't even be possible...[break][break]

...But Adrian wanted to see them try.[break][break]

If nothing else, it might be a little amusing.[break][break]

"Go on, give it an honest shot."[break][break]

To him, Razz had been a sort of PRIDE of the Rangers, and by extension the League—one of the good ones, someone who had aspired to greater things and hadn't let it steer them wrong...[break][break]

He wanted to see him thrive. Adrian wanted to believe in their natural talent—and so he forced him through this—even if he felt guilty at forcing them to grasp blindly at something they couldn't remember how to reach. Instruction could wait.[break]
