Adrian didn't subscribe to the fanaticism or the dirty tactics. What's worse, is he was only ever really out for himself. Only a select few earned enough of his favor to warrant consideration. The rest were outsiders, as far as he was concerned.[break][break]

With the expansion to his garden, Adrian is kept busy by the need for pruning and upkeep—but more than that, it's the fresh wave of pokemon that are hellbent on stealing his berries.[break][break]

Normally, Rover is enough to guard them.[break][break]

But then there are moments like these.[break][break]

Adrian stares down a strange pokemon—a POLTCHAGEIST—that has approached his garden while he tends to it. The whimsical creature seems intent on his berries—perhaps the PASSHO BERRY hidden among them—though it matters to him little. Of all the berries out there, these belong to him. In the light of a pokeball's flash, an Arbok emerges at Adrian's side...[break][break]

"Brood, take point." Its scales drag against the forest floor silently, putting itself between Adrian's garden and the intruder. Its tongue flicks at the air, tasting for a heat signature. But there was none to be found in the spectre.[break][break]

There's a change in the air as Poltchageist attacks in the moment that Arbok falters, brewing up a shadow ball and hurtling it towards them. Adrian reflexively strafes out of its path, while Arbok stands defiant. It spits up a gunk shot that neutralizes the attack, spattering acid.[break][break]

"Take it down," Adrian urged.[break][break]

Raising its tail and driving it against the ground, shadowy tendrils like nails jut out of the earth at Poltchageist's base, skewering the pokemon with phantasmal energy. The creature staggers...[break][break]

Adrian prepares an empty pokeball, tossing it.[break][break]

I fuckin' panicked.[break][break]

Normally, it would have been better to have a pokemon already released. The lapse in judgment costed him a crucial moment. He's pelted by at least a couple of Dreepy before he's able to scramble for a pokeball, noticing the dull emanation coming off of Howard. Weird.[break][break]

No time to worry about that, right now.[break][break]

From out of his pokeball came an Arbok that coiled around itself defensively, swiping its tail at the Dreepy that darted through their group, grazing Adrian's arms and legs. TCH.[break][break]

"Scatter 'em, Brood," Adrian begged.[break][break]

Rising from its defensive coil, Arbok's hood flared open, revealing the threatening INTIMIDATION pattern. Yet it did not seem to deter them as much as he might've hoped; they turned around.[break][break]

Another pass. Another wound grazing his biceps.[break][break]

"Brood, cover me," he called out.[break][break]

A series of reckless SHADOW RAVES pierced upwards from the ground like stygian stalagmites, punching at the air as Adrian went to retrieve his phone in the dark. Luckily, the light remained on...[break][break]

Just as he approached, Adrian's foot snagged, and he fell against the cavern floor hard. He could feel the abrasions against his palms and arms, the jolt up his elbow and a roadrash on his chin.[break][break]

But his phone was practically within reach—

He'd learned enough from Howard to be content, though none of it was actionable. Even so, it was a great start.[break][break]

He almost didn't know what to do. Normally, this is where he'd throw a pokeball—but he only had a phone. It took a moment to register this, but the alarming blare of a dozen wisps was compelling in its own way. Even if it was his only source of light, it only seemed a natural response.[break][break]

He chucked the phone at the horde.[break][break]

The light careened through the dark, before it was lost to it, swallowed into a stygian expanse. And the swarm paid it no mind, rushing them...[break][break]

"Well fuck," Adrian yelped, realizing his error. He scrambled for a pokeball in the dim, his heart beginning to pound. It wasn't worth the trouble.

He takes the opportunity to break line of sight from the sniper, eluding their watchful eye as best he can, hobbling to the next tree before locking himself down. Adrian braces himself against the tree, the nagging sensation of his leg gnawing at his patience, but he manages to push it off and focus. He couldn't back down from this.[break][break]

"GYAAASHA!" Adrian's keystone syncs up, and Gyarados grows in size, its lumbering figure now hulking. They are unable to make use of the skies, and so he resorts to the sheer power of evolution to avail him in this trial.[break][break]

Nobody should be running anything to Petalburg. It was Rocket's now, and this one was hardly identifying. He wears an incredulous scowl as he leers through the haze, gleaning little from their silhouette. They carry a satchel, not that it means anything—it was either a ploy, or the recipient had fled. That much he felt sure of. He places a boot against the vehicle, Arbok at his flank.[break][break]

"Yeah, I do—so why don't you turn this thing around, and head on back home," Adrian scoffed, gesturing to Oldale.[break][break]

Arbok licks at the air while Adrian stares them down, his fingers twitching with impulse.[break][break]

Somewhere within the overgrowth of Route 102, Adrian tramples the grass beneath his feet, accompanied by a slithering companion. An Arbok at his side exacerbates a morning fog with its HAZE, allowing him to move around mostly unseen during the predawne hour.[break][break]

But he takes a step out onto the path.[break][break]

He has plans for this place—a road to take them straight to the heart of every neighboring city and town. A road to run supplies and reinforcements. A road to pave the way for what comes after.[break]

Adrian staggers out from behind the tree, in time to see Mawile flanking his Gyarados. With a sharp stare and knitted brows, he prepares to speak, but not before Furor reels from the chomp of Mawile's gaping mouth. But he kept his eyes out for the other trainer, and that weapon...[break][break]

He would have to learn to fight this war that way, if the League was going to do likewise, carrying armaments. It only made sense.[break][break]

Furor would find it difficult to catch the Mawile in this tangle of overgrowth, but Adrian could see an opportunity—one to rid them of both problems.[break][break]

All in one fell swoop—[break][break]

"FUROR, BRUTAL SWING!"[break][break]

Even in its anguished throes, Furor understood.[break][break]

Executing his plan in that moment, Gyarados would use its gangling, hulking span of muscles to writhe and thrash, swinging its weight around in a way that would not be easily quelled—much less endured—from above or below.[break][break]

He'd never known of Freya Morningstar personally, but she was the one that had been locked in prophecy with Declan, forcing them into the armistice at Sootopolis. And she was a Draconid. It was something he knew very little about. He was curious about what else made them different, but they sounded like loonies from such a brief summary...[break][break]

Adrian wouldn't tell Howard about the reportings popping up across social media—some centered around old draconid ritual sites.[break][break]

"I thought they'd be a bigger deal; aren't they the indigenous peoples?" It wasn't often Adrian heard about them, if at all, and he knew even less. He'd have liked to be a little more brushed up on it. His steps carry him towards the falls after a brief jaunt.[break][break]

"Alright, why don't we cut through the falls and check for hidden bases?"[break][break]

The Unown Report had taken him and Mars here, once. He's not sure what came of that lead, as Mars had been forced to go it without him, but he remembered a map—though not what it pointed to. But Meteor Falls was a place of interest...[break][break]

Ducking his head beneath the cavern entrance, Adrian brandished his phone as a light source, though it only made the experience even more eerie as he was enveloped by the ebonmere.

There are a series of doors left hanging ajar, and from there he's able to find them a vacant room to give himself a moment to think. Though most of them couldn't FIELD a response to such questions as: 'What was happening?', or 'How do we get out?'.[break][break]

In the room there is mostly nothing. A dusty old room, like a small office. Inside are old dusty tomes and a desk covered in papers, folders and paperweights. It felt older than their time. Time...? Adrian checked the clock on the wall, which hadn't been ticking with the time. More weird shit. Rummaging around, he goes to sit at the desk when he notices a tied off parcel.[break][break]

Inside are simple objects: Odd rocks with subtle properties unremarkable to the naked eye. Papers, some stamped and sealed, others not that seem to detail pokemon. Some rudimentary pokedex, perhaps. Just how old were these...?[break][break]

"Do you recognize these rocks, ...?" He paused. What was his name again...? Adrian only had the vaguest sense he knew him.[break]

They would just have to be ready for it. Adrian winces from the gnawing pain in his calf, taking a moment to soothe out the spasm. Mudsdale manages to trample the grass and weeds, reducing the path to dirt where it trots, but it pays mind to its trainer and stops just ahead of them.[break][break]

"I'm glad you don't hate it." He expected to be met with resistance: Intruding on wild species' habitats, the cost of production, and so on were all road blocks... But could they afford not to? That was the question that mattered most.[break][break]

Adrian rises from his kneeling position just as Inoue turns to face him. He didn't always take compliments well, but at least he felt Hitoshi to be anything but disingenuous. Still, it's not as though he executed the role well himself...[break][break]

Whether it was hope, inspiration or protection, Team Rocket demanded more of their beasts than the name suggested. It wasn't enough to be strong—anyone could be strong—but they needed charismatic leaders... 'For the glory...'[break][break]
