As Dhelmise curls the long chain of its ANCHOR SHOT around the pirate ship's hull, the watercraft nearly capsizes. Several pirates slip on the angling deck, one even falling into the water when the railing fails to stop his swift descent. Once it's pulled itself close against its prey, Dhelmise allows the boat to settle back onto the water. Beneath Orion and Kyle, their yacht rocks with the resulting wave.[break][break]

Kyle's suppressing fire is useful in keeping the pirates down. Orion's sure they've got things handled before a lone figure emerges from the captain's quarters and tosses a full team of pokeballs into the air. Driven from his hiding by the near-capsizing of the boat, the captain comes out to play.[break][break]

"Uh, bad stuff," is not very descriptive, but he quickly follows, "Captain's on our ass now, he's retaliating — fuck."

Orion curses and hits the deck as a hyper beam sears overhead. He's not sure what Pokemon fired it, only that he feels the heat of the blast and his heart nearly leap from his chest. He rolls into a sitting position and scrambles to his feet.[break][break]

"If it's them or us, we're authorized to use whatever force we want," he breathes, taking cover behind his Swampert.

Orion dips his head in silent understanding. He knew the risks as well as Evan; were he caught with the chimera, it would likely cost him his position on the Council. Was Lars not in possession a Null of his own, he'd assume he'd be kicked from the Rangers as well. He can't blame Evan for wanting to lay low.[break][break]

Evan's compassionate, too. He'd doubtless want to help his Null. Orion casts a sad look at Percy, who has barely moved from its sentinel position upon being released, and returns him to his capsule.

He manages to remain on his feet, though his head tilts toward the soft whumpf of his partner falling onto the sand. His lip twitches.[break][break]

"Same," he grimaces, referring to the unpleasant experience of poison. "Thankfully it was just the little one that bit you."[break][break]

Had it been an Arbok, especially the larger one, Orion might've needed to call for an airlift to the hospital. At the question, Orion sticks out a hand in a silent offer to help the other ranger back to his feet. "Up to you whether you want to stick around; I've already promised I will, but if you want to go get that arm checked out, feel free."

Anxiety claws at his chest as the storm rages overhead, but Orion does not waver further in his resolve as he follows the captain into the depths. He is not one to do things in half-measures.[break][break]

All the same, he shoots Skyler an appreciative look when he feels her reassuring grip on his arm. He reads the messages as she sends them and nods to show that they have an understanding; he isn't as familiar with the ocean as he'd like, and it's good to have someone along who can make up for that.[break][break]

What he is familiar with is Pokemon, and the unnatural way in which the colony suddenly rise toward the surface. They are dwellers of shallows, not depths, but most Pokemon had the sense to retreat in the event of a storm. The look he gives Skyler is one of alarm. He can see it reflected back in her gaze and they move together toward whatever danger the colony flees.[break][break]

Unable to properly direct his Pokemon without words, Orion can only pray that they understand. Some of the Corsola gravitate toward Lanturn's eerie light, crowding around the dual-type and shivering in fear.

She's quick to get down to business and Orion's relieved; he's far less awkward with a task to focus on, and their survival is the perfect excuse not to make small talk.[break][break]

"Did you bring any Pokemon? I only brought a team of six, didn't notice anything in the rules against bringing more but I didn't want to push it and get us disqualified." There's a seventh Pokeball, hidden where the others are clearly displayed on his belt. He doesn't intend to use it. He'd brought his Swampert, Chandelure, Lanturn, Noivern, and Espeon for their various utilities. He never went anywhere without his Absol. Besides, the herald of disaster would be useful if they were going to get hit by a hurricane or something.[break][break]

He sends out the Absol now, the white-furred creature landing gracefully in the sand.[break][break]

"We'll need fresh water, too," he muses, starting to walk toward the treeline.

Orion's laughter is breathy, strained. "You know what's really funny? I'm not even kidding."[break][break]

He still has nightmares about the swarming cubes, the sweeping beams of light from the tower, Poi's snickering laughter echoing in the background like an ominous soundtrack. He doubts they'll ever go away.[break][break]

Thankfully, he's spared further rumination by the arrival of the coast guard. There's nothing more reassuring to the councilman than seeing the Ranger's insignia emblazoned on the side of their boats. Orion's Absol is absent even as Kazimir's bird returns to him; the dark-type was no doubt ensuring the safety and security of the passengers until they could be safely escorted from the boat or otherwise returned home. He does not seek him out.[break][break]

"Yeah, I'd say this went about as well as a pirate attack could've." This time, his laughter is less strangled. "Next time we catch up, let's do it in a fucking bunker or something where nothing'll go wrong."[break][break]

He grins, clearly jesting.

Espeon's forked tail flicks as visions flood her thoughts. Orion feels the press of the Pokemon's weight against his calf. It's a warning of some sort; this he recognizes, but he doesn't understand why. He remains on edge as they walk.[break][break]

Poipole's snickering unnerves him further. It reminds him of ghost-types, eternal pranksters, giggling when they know they've done something they shouldn't. Orion's familiar with ghosts and finds humour in their antics but this Pokemon is quite literally alien.[break][break]

He remains silent as the floors are discussed, giving input only in the form of a curt nod to Balder's reasoning.[break][break]

At least we know there's more of them. Kazimir's words resonate through Orion's thoughts, and he tries to catch the Pokkenger's gaze as they step into the elevator. Were they being led straight into a trap?

Though he's concerned for the Pokemon streaming from the run-down cabin, he knows Iris has the right idea in detaining the scientist. With luck, the Pokemon who'd escaped would find their way in the wilds, and the ones too weak to run would be catered to by the Rangers.

The HYDRO PUMP blasts along the beach and leaves a dark line in the sand. Iris reacts faster than even Orion, who follows with a sharp bark of: "Guard! Gengar, neutralize!"[break][break]

The air shimmers with Swampert's WIDE GUARD as the purple amphibian leaps to Blue's side. Gengar cackles as it phases through the wall of the dilapidated building and sets a HYPNOSIS against the scientists within.[break][break]

Expecting no further movement, Orion is alarmed when the door once again bursts open to reveal a Pokemon — frantic, weak, clearly abused — that makes a beeline for the surrounding wilds. It would seem the scientists didn't have as good a hold on their quarry as the Rangers had thought.
