Perhaps its was too much drink, or the ridiculousness of what he was watching, but Rex burst out laughing, clutching his sides as Chu-e took charge of the situation. How stupid was that!? "Please tell me that actually happened guys." He supposed he was one of the few people who was more amused than annoyed at the sudden fight, "A Ditto fight! It was a Ditto fight, wasn't it?" Hopelessly amused at his own talk, Rex only continued to giggle to himself, only stopping to drink more.

Rex's previous suspicious demeanor was quickly replaced by an easy smile, his attempt at trying to appear more collected and cautious falling away into a smile, even as the shots he held mightily in his hands nearly spilled as Valerio's arms fell across his shoulders. "If I had known we'd be having this dumb party, I would have shown off better!" He chirped to Lulu, trying to ignore the fact that she had seen him in a panicky mess last. She could just assume he did other cool stuff, right? [break][break]

Instead, he focused on the two introductions (was it just the alcohol buzz, or did one of those names sound familiar?), comfortably contained by a friend, he raised on of his full hands in a mimicry of a salute. "Heya..." He pointed at Chu-e, chuckling, "So should I want to hang out with 'em or not?" No, Rex was not a classy person or a gentleman at all, and already thoughtlessly drunk.

Rex had joined the party and, being himself, had joined the alcohol table as soon as humanely possible. Liquid courage was taking a while to set in. More importantly, annoyance bubbled under the surface, a defiance he was too afraid to show. What the hell did he care it was the boss' birthday...that didn't stop him from having a ratty card in his pocket with a measly $20 bucks in it. It was unsigned, obviously. If the boss wouldn't come to his birthdays, then he saw little reason to make it a ground 'ol gift. [break][break]

Three people were approaching the table now, and Rex happily ignored the other two in favor of a face he actually recognized, "Val!" He raised a glass to him, happily pushing more drinks towards the group that was arriving. He himself wandered near Valerio, instinctively seeking refuge with a friend he knew, "Who're these two?"

Training them to be strong and grooming them right feels right. Rex's grin fell slightly, looking more thoughtful as he pondered the almost ridiculous sentiment. So a trainer was supposed to care about all their Pokemon. Weird. Even the useless ones? One growled, drawing him back into reality that he had zoned out of...right, he was rising One off. "Well, you seem to be doing a good job." Not a right one, a good one. [break][break]

"Hopefully that cleaning gets your dog even better." He parroted back, grinning himself at the encouragements. He himself felt like One was cool and rugged when he had dirt and rock around, but contests were dumb affairs anyway. [break][break]

The moment he finished cleaning One, the Aerodyactl jerked upwards, marching away all affronted by his new cleanliness. "Looks like One decided we're done here." Rex chucked, starting off after the beast, "Happy New Years, kid, see ya around." He knew he'd certainly be visible one day.

A curious smile lingered on Rex's lips, trying not to answer something stupid like "You're old!" Or the other stupid shit that came out of his mouth. He didn't think it would be an appreciated comment, no matter how much of a joke he turned it into. Either way...older people usually knew what they were talking about (ignoring his 25 years of life), so he could probably trust Gavin...right?

"Wish it felt that way." He beamed at the charming clink of the glasses, cheered even if just slightly, "I just wanna fight people, and not freaks anymore, then I can show you an' the boss what I'm made of!" Even now, it seemed his only goal was acknowledgment.

Rex tilted his head, job as a trainer? Nevermind that a kid as young as this was apparently a "trainer", the words hit him as...wrong. as trainer, it was his job to make his Pokemon strong, make it so that they and him would never be hurt. That's the way he entered the world. Who cared if they and him got dirty? They always were. "Huh...well, you seem to ve doing a good job." He let loose a boring platitude, that was what most of these "trainers" liked to hear, right? [break][break]

One grumbled, an eye rolling over to glare at Rex as he struggled with a particularly encased shred of mud. Too aware of its ability to harm the human though, that was all the defiance that One chose to show. At the very least, it wouldn't whimper. [break][break]

Rex listened silently, a rarity for him as he found a difficulty...how did people have these normal conversation? [break][break]

"Something important?" He thought momentarily, quickly coming up with his own version of "something important", "You do battle or something, maybe?" Still didn't understand how being clean would help that, but it was the only situation he saw as important, except meeting a boss or something, but a kid wasn't gonna meet someone important like that, huh? Again, he beamed, joined by a toothy grin from One, "Yeah, we both kinda like people cheering for us, so it was kinda easy to get him to do it!"

Cleaning keeps you clean all year? Rex couldn't help but bark out a laugh, at the very least, the conversation was occupying him from the difficult task of scrubbing dirt out if a Pokemon that likely hadn't been cleaned in a year. "Well, thats silly. Gotta keep cleaning, don't ya?" He never heard that from his parents...not that he heard much from them anyway. Must have been some new thing he never bothered to learn.

The man noticeably perked up once the conversation turned to his own Pokemon, "Nah, nothin' special...just thought if I were looking better, he should too." There was a moment if thought, and he beamed proudly, "Last time we did this,, we almost won a contest!" He was still bitter about that. "Maybe you'll see me there again, if this New Year means anything good! [break][break]

"He's an A-Aero...Aerodactyl." Rex managed to stammer out the name, likely one of the few Pokemon names he bothered to remember, "He's real special, they had to bring him back from bones!" He patted the Pokemon proudly, grinning happily, "How 'bout you, do kids have special occasions?" [break][break]

One perked up at the sound of returning Pokemon, jaws starting to part until Rex smacked him roughly in the shoulder, hissing under his breath, "We're not fighting, idiot. We're not messing up my look today." His grumbling evolved into a smile as he peered into the area. "Ohhh." [break][break]

A dog Pokemon...thing! [break][break]

His fossil beast peered around the area, seemingly peeved it was already occupied before marching forward...towards the other human and Pokemon. God, One, couldn't he tell that Rex didn't feel like talking to someone else today!? [break][break]

"No problem!" He chirped, nonetheless, already putting on his usual smile and voice. One rested near the basin, eyes swiveling between Rex and it distastefully. Always obedient to him, but not always happy with his decision. [break][break]

"Preparing for somethin' special?" He raised the question casually, ignoring One rumbling as he started with a great big deal of water dumped on the large Pokemon.

It was a new year, and Rex had decided to go completely cliché today. He wasn't sure whether he regretted it or not, but it was a little late to change it.. his hair was cut. What was originally a mess of hair he made no effort to maintain, was now closer to his head, brushed and...clean? Amazingly, he was actually considering keeping it neat and clean! [break][break]

"What do you think, One? I look good, right?" He chattered, dancing around the beast with new energy, "All we gotta do is clean you up now...like that contest shit we did!" There was a tone of fondness in his voice, whether he'd say it out loud or now, that showy contest had fit him like a glove...it had felt nice to be cheered for just cause you were flashy and looked good, the crowd had actually liked him and One! They were idiots, but still! [break][break]

...but how stupid would that be? A guy like him, Rocket even, being a contest competitor? He'd be a joke...and besides, One wasn't looking too happy at the prospect of being cleaned up again, so he might as well focus on that instead of stupid thoughts.

"You've been around a while, huh? Ya don't look like it." He hoped it was obvious there was a complimentary tone in his words,, even if it was delivered in the same lackadaisical way he tried to embue his every word with. [break][break]

"Ohhhh." Rex intoned, understanding nothing. A Legendary meant something important, right? Wonder why he hadn't heard of it till now. "...I couldn't keep my cool." A nervous laugh punctuated his almost whispered words, eyes flickering around to the people nearby, as if he was spilling a big secret. "It was all so bad out there." He pointed with his drink towards Gavin, "And then there's freaks of nature like you. How do ya just decide not to panic?" His Pokemon, other people. They all seemed so much better.

Rex's eyes caught on the grim smile. Maybe it was because he put on the smiling mask so many times, but it stood out to him the most. Nobody smiled like that for good reasons. Memories of his worst moments raced through his mind...God, he smiled like that when One dropped that stupid Pokemon out of the sky. Some twisted pride and wrongness fueled that sort of caricature of a smile...he really didn't think Gavin was capable of that. He was supposed to be the twisted, brutal one, wasn't he? "I'll think about it." Rex lied through his teeth. Even now, he feared appearing like he was afraid. He was a damn Rocket, who already thoroughly hurt a bunch of people, what kind of guy did he look like if he was afraid of a Shadow? "G-good luck with yours." Even he wasn't certain what he meant by that, that it would listen one day? Like him one day? He didn't know.

"Lucky man." Rex hummed in envy, "You'd think with how long I've been here, they'd listen to me too." Finally, he raised his cup, coughing as he gulped it down. Improper drinking was sort of his thing. Just trying to get as drunk as possible. [break][break]

His eyes narrowed a bit as Gavin told where he was...so he was at that place? When? His curiosity won over at the strange name that came out of Gavin's mouth, "Ga...Giratina? Is that...is that what that was? Is it a Pokemon?" It didn't look like an Ultra Beast, the artificial appearance that still plagued his mind. [break][break]

"So, was it there to...help?" He piped up hopefully, "'cause you didn't look...well, panicked or anything," Like me, his mind provided helpfully, "When you were helping that kid, I mean."
