until marcel spoke, dominic remained unmoving; still and statuesque against the darkened sky. he turns his head, his gaze settling on marcel briefly and then flickering deeper into the recesses of the camp. although dominic’s brow quirks into a frown, there is a bitter smile that lingers at the corners of his mouth.

you only like it when you want something, he almost says, swallowing the words down before they are fully formed.

"why stop there?" he drawls. "we could neutralise them all, then put them down one by one." he doesn’t clarify who the we is. dominic’s shadow wavers, the edges of it feathering out like plumes and then spikes harshly, as if it itself had been listening to his words.

the dispatchment from the team's submarine is small and sent quickly, as soon as the reports surface. it's only him, his two pokemon, and the grunt at the helm as they draw nearer.

two luxray - one male, one female - weave across the deck, their eyes affixed on the beast and staring. they see its every movement, they've seen it since their little boat had just breached the horizon. dominic, in turn, watches them for any reaction; every snarl, every twitch of a muscle, every swivel on an unblinking eye.

they sail onward, cresting the waves, and dominic finds his gaze lingering on the others as they all congregate at this single point below the zenith of the wormhole.

they might die, he thinks, turning to glance at the luxray.

"WILD CHARGE," he orders, arms crossed against the chill and the seaspray as he watches the scene unfold.

dominic is familiar with the pokemon as much as he's familiar with their sting. against his better nature, he flinches away. running isn't really an option either, as the swarm closes in around him and a few others. dominic tosses out a capsule and orders the pokemon to attack.

"BITEY BITE," he growls to the pokemon. the houndoom snarls in response but stays almost entirely still as flames surround its exposed fangs. time seems to stand still for a mere fragment of a second, and then everything moves quickly once more; fiery teeth launch into the smoke and encircle around the targets.

incidents with vicious pokemon influenced perhaps by toxins had become commonplace throughout the region the past few days; people who are paid to do this hypothesise dozens of theories as to what sparked all this, but dominic doesn't delve into it too deeply. as he hurtles from one place to another atop his garchomp, gas mask affixed to his face, his only interest is in suppressing the outbreaks before anything even suggests at rocket involvement.

he finds a moment of respite atop a small outcropping of rock outside dewford, taking the chance to smoke a cigarette and scroll through the notifications on his phone. dominic pretends to not notice the displeasure of his gengar at the smoke that billows from his parted lips.

dominic turns a corner and comes across another spinarak at his face level. for a long moment, dominic watches it skitter across the whorled bark of a tree and then continues down along the path into a forested area. he already has an ariados, he doesn't want to grow some kind of spinarak infestation in the submarine. that being said, if he were to maintain a colony of them, he thinks he knows what he'd call them all; KOGA, JANINE, ROXIE, PLUMERIA, KLARA...

dominic is somewhat familiar with the species - he's caught dozens of them back at home in kanto to be sold overseas - but he's never stopped to think about the minutiae of their behaviour. in sum, if anything was amiss, dominic doesn't notice. throws out an empty pokeball the same way he has done over and over before.
