THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

Another trip to the Ultra Crater meant another visit to the campsite Zev and Nenet had established on their first expedition into that wild region. The modifications the man had made to the abandoned cottage had held; the equipment stored there had not suffered any damage. [break][break]

While Nenet checked the recordings, Zev walked around the building, looking for anything amiss. At his side floated his Flutter Mane. [break][break]

"Nothing unusual out here," he said upon reentering the cottage. "It doesn't look like anything has passed through the area." [break][break]

Unbeknownst to him, however, a small Pokémon that avoided leaving any trace of its arrival had followed him and Nenet to the cottage. It flitted close to one of the open windows and hovered just out of sight.

Letting Zev do his thing and scout the perimeter, Nenet fiddles with her recorder for a time until a triumphant look overcomes her expression and it flickers to life. "I think it is the atmosphere," she muses aloud while hitting the play button and then fast-forwarding to skim the feed.

A dark shadow passes over the recording and Nenet pauses it to rewind, upon which an oddly clear, "Once again, I have cut a worthless object" plays aloud. She pauses the video once more and blinks, her gaze flitting from it to Zev.

"You heard that, right?" she asks incredulously before hitting play again.

"I did," Zev confirmed, raising an eyebrow at the machine. [break][break]

It reminded him of high school, when fearful parents spread rumors that rock and metal bands were putting questionable messages in their song lyrics that one could only hear when their music was played backwards. [break][break]

Stepping closer, he opened his mouth to ask Nenet to rewind the recording again. However, movement from the window caught his eye. Snapping his head in that direction, he spied the young Kartana before it zipped out of sight. [break][break]

"There's an Ultra Beast out there," he told Nenet as he moved toward the door again. Stepping outside, he spotted the Kartana floating a few yards away, as if it was waiting for them to follow it.

Movement caught the corner of her eyes, but unlike Zev Nenet was too late to look and the Kartana was out of sight before she knew it. Zev however announced it was an Ultra Beast and she arched an eyebrow, uncertain if they should confront it or not.

Setting down the recorder she follows after Zev, Nenet peers at the creature from behind her husband with curiosity. The small Kartana spins, swaying in the air where it hangs, and then slowly floats back as if further tempting the pair.

"I guess it wants us to follow," Nenet muses, her golden eyes keen. Feeling up for an adventure, she nudges his shoulder with her own as she announces, "Come on."
[break][break]
The Kartana pauses every few feet and spins as if to ensure the pair are following as it leads them deeper into the bamboo forest; the light blots out somewhat, and the stalks of bamboo grow impossibly thicker the further they go.

"It feels like something's watching us," Nenet murmurs after a time, just as her Slither Wing pops out of its pokeball.

The deeper the pair ventured into the bamboo forest, the stronger Zev's fighting instinct became. Every sense was on high alert as his eyes scanned the thick, dark grove. Ahead, the Kartana flitted on, seemingly unbothered. [break][break]

And then Zev spotted them: dozens of Kartana—no, hundreds. They appeared so suddenly, as if they had materialized from thin air, surrounding the humans and Flutter Mane like a flock of pale birds. [break][break]

And then, swarming as one, they dove for the attack. [break][break]

"Run!" he shouted, grabbing Nenet and hauling her with him as he dashed in a random direction. Their Paradox Pokémon followed, blasting attacks at the countless Kartana in an attempt to deter them. [break][break]

Many fell, but the fluttering sound of paper on the wind persisted, chasing them doggedly. [break][break]

Nenet really needed to stop letting her curiosity get them in trouble in the Crater, but that was a thought for another day as she sped through the old-growth bamboo forest chased by Kartana.

Despite the density of the thicket they break through the bamboo all of a sudden into a clearing, only to be dwarfed instead by Celesteela instead of greenery. The sound of the Kartana is still audible, though there's a certain hesitancy in their pursuit.

Slowing, Nenet reaches out to tug at Zev's wrist as she calls to him, "I have a terrible idea." The heat of one of Slither Wing's fiery attacks washes over her, and the nearby giant Celesteela fill the air with metallic groans as they shift in place, appearing ready to move.

"Use your claws," she urges, her head tipping towards one of the nearby giants that seems ready to take off at a moment's notice.

It was, perhaps, a testament to Zev and Nenet's relationship that he understood her intention as soon as she mentioned having a terrible idea. His attention snapped toward the indicated Celesteela. Still running, he redirected himself toward it. [break][break]

When they were close enough, he grabbed her around the waist with one arm and leaped the rest of the way. Gravity relinquished its hold on them, allowing them to soar across the remaining distance. [break][break]

Crystals surged over Zev's body. His free hand sank claws into the Celesteela's steel hide as it shot out of the ground. Instinctively, his grip on Nenet tightened. "Hold on!" he shouted at her over the rumble of rocket engines. [break][break]

Flutter Mane and Slither Wing latched on as well. Soon, they were racing into the sky; the ground fell away and the great dome of the heavens twinkled with distant stars. [break][break]

Ahead and above them, the moon beckoned. [break][break]

Much to Zev's surprise, they landed on the moon within minutes. The Celesteela became inert, as if entering an idle state as it awaited something. He jumped to the ground and felt lighter than usual, even without manipulating gravity's pull on him. [break][break]

"We made it," he told Nenet as he released her. [break][break]

And then, against all expectations, the young Kartana from earlier peeled off his back and floated into view. It spun in the air and made an odd, mischievous noise, as if it was giggling. [break][break]

Clinging to Zev, Nenet feels a certain thrill at both the implicit trust on display and the wild ride the pair find themselves on. Around them the stars blur, colouring the darkness around them with smears of cerulean, white, and silver; Nenet's eyes shine.

Together they land on some place she could have never imagined: the moon. They can breath, walk, unimpeded and she loosens her hold on Zev as the Celesteela became inert. As they gain their bearings, Nenet's Slither Wing trots slinks across the dusty surface towards a nearby crater. A tiny Celesteela rests within.

The young Kartana giggles and dances in front of the pair, seemingly proud of its actions that have lead them here. "We made it," she confirms distractedly as her gaze shifts from the Kartana to whatever her Slither Wing is examining.

Upon finding the Celesteela, her expression slowly turns wistful as she watches its attempt to launch; the tiny Ultra Beast wobbles, failing to gain any semblance of becoming airborne. She slowly knees upon the ground, wondering how it could ever want to leave the very moon they stand on.

"It really is beautiful here," is what she says to Zev.

More crystals crawled up Zev's arms as he surveyed the bleak, lunar landscape. Being up in space made his soul yearn for the vast oblivion beyond the moon. He raised his gaze from the rocks and dust to ponder the dark realm where his patron dwelled. [break][break]

The urge to join Necrozma filled him with longing. But no sooner did the emotion rise in his chest did he meet a sudden emotional and mental resistance. His whole body trembled as the weight of Necrozma's will pressed against his own. [break][break]

All at once, he understood what it meant: No. Not yet. He still had work to do among the humans. [break][break]

"We wouldn't mind staying up here for a while, at least," he said, partly to his patron and partly to Nenet. [break][break]

The flitting movements of the Kartana slowly drew Zev's focus back to the present moment. It did not seem inclined to leave, even when he waved a hand to shoo it away. Instead, it floated closer, its gestures suggesting a child-like curiosity. [break][break]

With a shrug of his shoulders, the man took out an empty Pokéball and held it out to the Ultra Beast. It went inside willingly. [break][break]

"Find anything interesting?" Zev called out to Nenet, noticing at last that she was kneeling within a small crater. [break][break]

Nenet's adoration for the moon gets sidetracked as she processes her husband's words - more specifically his usage of 'we'. Her gaze casts over her shoulder to him, her golden eyes sweeping pointedly over the man as if to assess the sum of him in one fell swoop.

"It's a small Celesteela," she answers, her chin tipping towards the young Ultra Beast who seems to have given up launching for the time being and, if possible, appears to be sulking at its failure.

There's a moment's pause before Nenet pulls out a pokeball of her own and tosses it towards the Celesteela. As she waits for its decision, she presses Zev, "'We'? Do you feel closer to Necrozma here?"

The crystals had spread to cover all the exposed skin on Zev's hands, arms, and neck. Clusters of them pockmarked his face, pockets of void against pale flesh. [break][break]
