too intimately familiar with the effects of the border, matias knows his time here is limited, prolonging it would only increase the risks which he has no intentions of doing anymore.

with his arcanine leading the way, tongue slopping out of its mouth as it bounces left and right, they make their way through the border, making sure to avoid the areas he's been to before; areas that he knows hold danger.

but in doing so, he ends up down another path that leads him to the same thing anyways. or arguably worse, perhaps.

Wo-chien slithered by her side, blending easily into familiar hazy surroundings as its Avatar searched the strange liminal space for the man she'd killed. What better bait was there than this -- the presence of his murderer -- to tempt him into revealing herself?[break][break]

The answer to that question revealed itself all too suddenly, manifesting first as an Arcanine and then as a man she'd done everything in her power to avoid despite the machinations of THEO BECKETT and others like him.[break][break]

Panic caught fire in her lungs, but she fought it down, the cutting tenor of his voice confirming her deepest darkest fears.[break][break]

"Then turn around and go back." The sharpness of her own voice surprised her. "You go your way, and I go mine."[break][break]

his arcanine senses the shift in the air, the sudden drop in tonality that threatens to drag them all down into the mist. he will not allow that to happen, naturally, as a soft grin graces his features.

"it would be easier that way, wouldn't it?"

if only she deserved that, but elisabeth is the last person who deserves mercy after everything she's done.

his eyebrow raises at snaking thorny tendrils, though he does not move from where he stands. his arcanine, having been trained by kyle lopez, prepares for the worst as embers dance across its fur, casting shades of orange and red across the scene.

She'd died in that world, too, though that factor hadn't mattered much to her mind. Her death didn't cancel out Kyle's.[break][break]

Murder was murder, with or without the presence of the murderer to pay the price for it.[break][break]

"Besides," she continued, the embers shimmering across his Arcanine's fur catching her attention, "violence was the language you always understood best."[break][break]

She'd learned that much on Mt. Chimney, the first and the last time they'd met.

if he truly was the unforgiving monster she made him out to be, he would've announced his presence with an EARTH SPIKE through her ankles to stop her from fleeing. then, he'd press forward, goading and toying with her to make her pay for what she'd done.

instead, he raises a hand and runs it along arcanine's fur, stifling the embers that quickly fade. the fire-type nudges its nose into matias' palm, then nods.

after smiling down at his arcanine, he looks back at the underboss.

"can we talk?"

This shift in his demeanor proved difficult to decipher. Shock and numb from grief, she figured, or playing at indifference to conceal ulterior motives.[break][break]

She didn't trust her instincts, not after being fooled so many times in the past by her senses.[break][break]

She didn't believe he could be gentle. Not with her.[break][break]

"Aren't we talking now?" The thicket of thorns subtly stretched outwards through the mist, curling about her like a protective cage. "I can't imagine there's much left to say."

it's almost sad to see how futile her defenses are should he actually be here to claim his revenge. the thicket of thorns that stretch out to keep her safe would be her undoing. he'd burnt through bryan delarosa's all the same when there were far fewer stakes.

"i'd argue the opposite."

there's too much left unsaid. but now, with the mist binding them in place, there's nowhere left to run.

"did you know?" he questions but he does not accuse.

his grin lingers through the chuckle he exhales not out of disbelief — her responses do little to surprise him, falling in line with what he has come to expect from her — but out of relief, almost, that nothing seems to have changed. there's some sort of comfort to find in that.

perhaps his resentments aren't there at all, muted under grief and guilt where he would've once misplaced them. he eyes WO-CHIEN behind her, though pays it no other attention besides the occasional glance to meet its gaze.

"you can blame kyle for that. but you did achieve one thing."

his arcanine sits, still tall enough to have its head petted by its trainer. his fingers tap against the fire-type's head, bouncing in repetition as he speaks.

Her eyes wandered over the primal markings on his skin, glaring in their tie to the earthen deity. Despite herself, she still remembered how they felt against her skin, warm and radiant with power. She hated it, how well she remembered those things.[break][break]

"Have they severed fully?" she questioned him instead, her doubt palpable. "The League guards its darkest secrets well, then. Imagine the pandemonium if civilians knew you'd faced the same fate as your brother."[break][break]

He's lying. He has to be, she thought desperately, though only one shred of evidence pushed against that theory.[break][break]

the pandemonium would feel insurmountable, he imagines, not only for the league but for what remains of the silph brothers. once avatars torn asunder by team rocket. by the same person, in fact. the realization makes him chuckle.

at her question, he bows like a showman, showing little to no effort as his arms are raised to his side.

he follows it with a nod.

She didn't know what to make of him when he was like this. She suspected that his showmanship had a mocking undertone, hinting at some cruel joke only he knew.[break][break]

"You must be happier, then," she said with a trace of bitterness. "Freed from the grips of insanity at last."[break][break]

Her arms wound about herself protectively, the thorns receding ever-so-slightly as she fixed him with a wary gaze. The mist rippled with the movement, trembling in place like specks of dust kicked up by a breeze.[break][break]

"Would be a happy ending, I suppose, if it weren't for the high cost that came with it."[break][break]

Despite the sheer hypocrisy of it all, resentment crawled out with her every word.
