The past few months can be blamed for that, because while Mars had always been someone who cared much for his health and diet, that only increased when he thought he could die if he got too stressed or if his blood pressure got too high. Those concerns are mostly gone now, of course, but even if they are, he has never been one to enjoy breaking habits that he took long to establish.

Considering all that, he scratches the Cutiefly’s head, just as he sees the way Fulgora perks up – alert. Apparently, a Heracross had been trying to make lunch out of the cute little fairy type, and when seeing it, it attempts to use a HORN ATTACK.

The Zeraora is quick to intercept, doing so with a FIRE PUNCH.

And while that was being dealt with, something shot out of the water, splashing—

What the hell?

Instead of the Salamence charging, the Braviary got ready to snatch the airborne fish out of the air by Honing his Claws to raise his accuracy—and followed the arc that the Magikarp traced as it flew through the air, aiming an aerial Tackle at the blue-plumed avian.

However, though, the Braviary was faster—and grabbed it before ascending as fast as he could, chaining into the motions of a Sky Drop.

Right as the Magikarp came crashing down, Alexei threw another Pokéball at it, to spare it the wrath of the angry Braviary circling above.

Mars looks at the Cutiefly on his shoulder with interest while listening to Alexei Ivanov’s explanation, because admittedly, species like those are not his area of expertise, nor did he think them to be that of the gym leader. ”I’m surprised you know all that. Fond of bug types?”

It may just be because it can fly, just like the Beautifly that soon appears from among the trees. A pokémon he’s actually missing in his collection. Naturally, Mars acts quickly.

SCALDING water is shot towards the wild pokémon by the Starmie, and with its wings now soaked and burnt, the Beautifly falls to the ground, left as an easy target for the Luxury Ball Mars throws next.

“Had her ever since she was a tiny little Cutiefly.”

Oh, that encounter really brought back memories, what with tiny little Carina offering him the flower but he refused to pluck it because that was how things apparently ran in the world of Pokémon hierarchy. He didn’t want to sacrifice the flower just to make the little one happy…

“When I first encountered her, she wanted me to take the flower that she was pollinating. But I said I don’t take flowers so needlessly. It’s apparently part of what the Cutiefly line do—they find the flowers that are just about ready to bloom, and offer it to whoever they choose to be their mated partner, or in other cases, as a show of impression—never intimidation. So I’d suggest having a patch of fresh flowers nearby that they can tend to.”

He would most likely go on for hours had he not noticed the Shellder that was peeking out of the shallows.

“I trust you already have that one?” he confirmed, tilting his head at the bivalve Pokémon’s direction.

The Cutiefly on his shoulder settles down, as if it had decided to simply rest on him for now, and while Mars still can’t really understand why it would choose to perch itself on him out of all people, he allows it, turning his attention back to the gym leader.

”That’s a cute story, sounds like you really cherish your Ribombee.” That much is true, and although Mars is not one to care for bonding with every single one of his pokémon, he appreciates it. ”I have a nice garden back at home, maybe this one will like it.”

Garden that is currently under the vigilant care of his sweet Teddiursa…

Sweet as the honey the said Teddiursa would probably love to steal from the beehive that’s apparently nearby… if judging by the presence of the Combee that decides to fly right over him, that is. Mars looks at it for a moment, and then his attention turns towards Fulgora, who – as expected – is looking at the bug as if wanting to hunt it down.

The Zeraora is quick to jump up on command, grabbing the Combee with flaming claws (FIRE PUNCH) and snatching it right off the air.

“She is extremely sassy, so don’t be surprised if your Cutiefly’s personality changes when they evolve. I know mine did a 180 from shy to… not-shy when she evolved,” he said with a peal of laughter.

While the other was busy with another Combee—wait a second, why were there so many Combee around these parts—he thought he saw something lurking by the shore.

“Hmm,” he pondered, and while the two ‘eyes in the sky’ were eager enough to start dive-bombing the presence down in the water, a singular glance from Alexei made the two change their minds and remain airborne.

Ah, such was life.

Truly, this Cutiefly doesn’t seem particularly sassy, nor does it seem particularly shy. It just sits on Mars’ shoulder, relaxed and unbothered, but undoubtedly it must have some unshakable confidence to have dared perch itself on a man like the banker.

The thought is amusing enough, and even more amusing is turning his attention to his Zeraora and seeing that it has decided to climb up a tree and chase a Spinarak. Apparently, this outing of theirs had been really amusing for Fulgora. Not so much for the wild pokémon population around them, though.

The next bug to dart across the general area—it looked ready to fucking bash them into a tree or something.

(Well, more on Alexei because he was a literal noodle, but you know.)

“Some Pokémon are infamous for switching personalities when they evolve… like the Charmander line, for one thing,” he mused.

“Cute and sweet in their baby form, but then they gain a massive pair of figurative ‘horns’ when they evolve the first time…”

The two eyes in the sky didn’t do anything, and therefore remained airborne as they let the Heracross live another day.

Being someone who happens to be in possession of a vast and varied collection of pokémon, Mars has definitely noticed a shift in the personalities of some of his own when they evolve. It’s part of why he has always been of the belief that pokémon are much more obedient when trained from a young age, but of course, even for a man like him that’s a luxury that can’t always be afforded.

”True enough, like Magikarp. We keep a few of them at a pond in the bank’s Slateport branch. They enjoy their days calmly swimming, but a Gyarados is a whole different beast.”

Mars himself has two Gyarados, actually, and he’s fond of them both. He’s somewhat fond of his Swampert too, but that doesn’t stop him from nodding towards the Mudkip when he sees it coming out of the water. After all, he does want to capture at least one of every common water type.

It’s Hesione that deals with the Mud Fish Pokémon for him, paralysing it before using her POWER GEM.

Oh? There was a Magikarp pond at the front of the POG Bank branch in Slateport?

Clearly, this showed that Alexei only traveled as needed—mostly to Lilycove and around Fortree. Was it his fault he was one of the more reclusive Gym Leaders that called this region home?

“Oh, that’s very true. Magikarp is another classic example of personalities changing upon evolution,” he nodded.

He had gotten so engrossed watching the other handling the Mudkip he’d clean forgotten that there was a teeny-ass Cutiefly that was flittering around the area, and neither of the two eyes in the sky reacted.

They already had Carina to contend with, after all.
