The Magikarp pond at the bank’s Slateport branch happens to be a particular point of pride for Mars. It’s a bit of a silly thing to be so proud of, he knows as much, but water type pokémon have always had a special place in his heart, and he will always look forward to adding a new colourful and all-too-expensive Magikarp to their growing collection.

Mars may be no scientist, but even he knows that Parasect like the one that stands beneath a nearby tree are also an example of evolutionary shifts in personality – albeit an extremely disturbing one.

Alexei looked over at where the other man was indicating, and he felt a cold shiver run up his spine.

“Those… are fucking crazy,” he said at the sight of the Parasect. Like, holy shit, who knew those nice-looking Pars evolved into something that was like ‘the living dead’.

Ah, the power of the Internet. Sometimes the information was too fantastical to be believed (at least, initially).

Seeing that the other had already gone after it, he let out a sigh of relief, but not before an Oshawott of all things, appeared on the shore—

And then a loud shrieking noise came from above, as a pair of claws suddenly made to grab the Water-type in a Sky Drop maneuver; while the Oshawott himself attempted to retaliate with Fury Cutter in mid-air.

However, the Braviary was faster than the smaller one was, and quickly sent the Oshawott plummeting, the youner Pokémon screaming profanities all the way down before Alexei threw an empty Pokéball at it before it crashed unceremoniously on the ground.

“No need to be so violent!” he called to the Braviary, who let out a singular screech before returning to join the Salamence on aerial patrol.

After the zombie mushroom-bug-thing has appropriately been dealt with and sent to dwell in the confines of a Luxury Ball that frankly may just be too nice for it (in Mars’ own opinion, at least), his attention turns to the Oshawott that soon reaches the beach… And subsequently to the way the gym leader’s Braviary savagely deals with it.

It makes him think of his own Oshawott, dearest Odysseus, and there is a slight feeling of sympathy. Poor thing.

”Are Braviary always so… violent?” It’s out of curiosity that he asks, since he’s not familiar with the species. Not yet, at least. At this point, he’s yet to meet the dark-feathered bird that will one day become one of his closest companions.

Hesione, however, is another one of them, and at this point, the Starmie already knows Mars well. So much so that when he rests a hand on one of her points, the pokémon knows this to be cue to use her COSMIC POWER in order to strengthen her defences.

“That—was an isolated incident,” he apologized, and even the Salamence up in the air was ‘chastising’ the Braviary with a bonking gesture from one of his wings.

“At least, not with the ones I own. They only attack when I’m in danger—or any member of the bird armada is compromised,” he added.

And that was a rather large avian armada, considering that all of his Pikipek, Trumbeak, and Toucannon had a singular aviary to themselves due to their sheer number.

“Your generous donation from before allowed the Sanctuary to expand the grounds and upgrade our medical equipment, you know. Also have several new aviaries opened, because when it’s migrating season, unfortunately it’s also nesting season and it can get real crowded.”

He was about to elaborate what else the donation had been used on when something literally fell out of the tree near where they were—with a loud BONK! noise before bouncing off him.

“Ow, what the!” he exclaimed as a Burmy appeared in his field of vision.

Quick as a fiddle the Salamence came soaring down, as the Burmy began trying to Bug Bite Alexei, the draconid picked it off with a swiftly-timed Dragon Claw, and sent it right into the beam of red light once he’d chucked another Pokéball at it.

”Don’t worry about it. It’s… Interesting.” Mars laughs lightly, whistling to call his Zeraora back to his side. The feline complies, but he takes a moment to stretch all too leisurely before approaching his trainer. Truly, for a pokémon that is so fond of hunting and who is capable of moving at incredible speeds, sometimes Fulgora can really be lazy.

This is what Mars finds himself thinking of when Alexei starts speaking about the sanctuary, and of course, it’s politely that he nods along, being reminded of the battle he and the gym leader had months ago – and of the donation that followed. It occurs to him he has never watched the footage that was taken back then, even if it had later on been uploaded and seen by Arceus-knows how many.

”It’s good to hear the donation was helpful and put to good use.” There’s a smile, chuckling when a Burmy falls on the gym leader. ”I hope nesting season goes well.”

After the Burmy had unceremoniously interrupted him (and him consequently catching it) he looked over at the other—

Only to be distracted by the sight of a—

“Do you mind?” he inquired, tilting his head in the direction of the Popplio. “I know you collect Water-types, but this is one I don’t have yet…”

The Water-type was sunning itself on the shore, humming softly—he didn’t want to wreck the scene however the Salamence had other ideas—

The Singing sounded sickly sweet, and Alexei resisted the urge to yawn—yikes, it was definitely something that wasn’t good!

“Ooh,” he groaned, and then the Salamence came down, quick as a shadow sweeping and a sudden crackling noise from the Salamence’s maw; catching the Popplio in a Thunder Fang attack.

“Take it easy, don’t overdo it!” he called after the draconid before the Water-type was dropped close to where he stood before he dropped an empty Pokéball on the Popplio.

”It’s fine, go ahead.” Mars collects water types, that much is true, and the Popplio evolution line are indeed some of his favourite, water types in the whole plethora of them, but even someone like Mars can put his greed aside for the sake of a companion who has been out here catching pokémon with him for a while. At least for now, that is.

”Careful with the singing, it might put you to sleep.” He too covers a yawn, and as he does so, his attention turns to a nearby Dwebble that looks quite drowsy too. It stumbles and struggles to stay up, making it the perfect target for Hesione the moment Mars puts a hand on the Starmie.

The Dwebble proceeds to take a jet of SCALDING water to the face, not even having enough time to find shelter in its shell.

“A-at least… we found where the… the singing, c-c-came from,” he continued, unable to stifle another yawn—because holy damn, the aftereffects of Sing really did linger long after the Poplio had been squared away.

While the other man dealt with a Dwebble, there was a—the sight of the Grubbin made him momentarily pause; however he realized he already had a Vikavolt of his own.

“Go on, go elsewhere… maybe Zac Ramsay can find you,” he said to the other Bug-type, leaving them alone in peace.

Mars truly doesn’t blame Alexei for still being tired even after catching the Popplio, the evolution line’s singing can often have effects like those on people. If anything, the more he thinks about it, the more impressed he is at the fact that Melody Miro had chosen to have a Primarina as her companion and actually manages to entertain audiences with it. It sure would be awful if the Primarina were to put them to sleep!

“Who knew… that Sing is such a potent move?” he said with a smaller yawn, before noticing one of Carina’s brethren fly by the bank owner, not a care in the world—

And then there was the ugliest Unovan Pokémon he’d ever laid eyes on to come waltzing by!

Okay, he knew he had his own reasons for collecting at least one of all of the Pokémon that came from his home region, but…

Why in the name of Arceus was there something that was ugly as sin that existed? This one, in particular?!

“I wonder… I wonder whatever creation deity was thinking when they decided to drop this into existence,” he said with a tilt of his head in the Seismitoad’s direction—it looked ugly as sin, for starters!

A Beam of Bubbles went shooting upward—and even though the Salamence was itching for violence, the Braviary came swooping down, riding on the top of a cascade of boulders that struck the deranged-looking amphibian in a rock Slide counteroffensive.

“Sometimes we get winners, and then we get these! No offense if you have one of this line…” he apologized to the other man while the two Pokémon fought in the background, exchanging Bubblebeam and even more localized Rock Slide attacks.

The exchange soon ended, and the Seismitoad collapsed—but not without him biting his lip and throwing an empty Pokéball in its direction.

Fuck, why did they look like that?!

(Just wait until he met Trubbish. That one took the cake, like, for real.)
